Screen error !?!?!??! - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

tomorrow ...
I'm loving my samsung rooted galaxy's i9000've played it up the following ROM: "Ultibread-V1.3"
and my problem you see in the photo, I hope you can help quickly ...
http://img862.imageshack.us/i/img20110312031518.jpg/

thats just gingerbread!
it should boot normally

Did you flash i9000XWJV1 using odin?
Ultibread works perfect for me ,flash it via odin with the proper instructions and stuff, then flash a "froyo" kernel with odin again with auto reboot off, when finished remove battery and go into recovery and select ultibread.

I've done with this pattern.
Many thanks to the hardworking developers and "Original Poster" Envy and dreamox rider, as well as redbull320 for the note!

This root is u.g. "Old" versions Eclair (Android 2.1) to August 2010.
Please do not make this if your Froyo (Android 2.2) did!
EVERYTHING AT YOUR OWN RISK! I POCKETPC.CH AND ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY, IF THERE SOMETHING WRONG SHOULD GO!
NOTE: This description is pretty old and the attached FILES OBSOLETE! QUOTE: "Tested with the firmwares XXJF5 (JFB) and XXJG5"! WHO IS WITH OTHER / NEWER VERSIONS TRY TO MAKE IT YOUR OWN RISK AND OWN FAULT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG!
Tested with the firmwares XXJF5 (JFB) and XXJG5.
The AUJF2 or XXLF3 should run, firmware upgrade with at least ODIN JF5/JFB is strongly recommended!
Let's go with the simpler version:
1. update.zip copy from the notes on the internal SD card (/ sdcard) of the Galaxy S (connect as mass storage via USB to the PC and copy the root directory without subfolders)
2. the Galaxy S off completely
3. Press the "Volume Up" (NOT down) and Home-/OK-Tasten and hold press Einschalteknopf; volume button and let go home only if the debug menu appears on the screen
4. Select update.zip (volume down), then confirm Home Button: S on the Galaxy apply.
No matter how you do it: after the reboot of the Galaxy S is the Rooting ready!

it's normal to get those fuzzy screen when you boot up your SGS while using ultibread ROM...and you need to be patient until the SGS boot animation appear on your screen...the v1.4 is weirder, you get some robot voice when switching on your SGS...just flash other firmware if you got any problem with any ROM....

I have been waiting about 30 minutes and it's still the same picture as ..

I rebooted and got stuck in a boot loop. It stays at the Samsung Galaxy S screen and doesnt go any further!
Ive had to take his phone home to fix it!
Can you offer any advice on how to get it going again?
Thanks in advance,

Thanks, Yeah ive tried that still stays at Galaxy S screen forever....
Download Odin and an apropriate flashfile and flash the phone.
Before you start take out the sim card and memory card.
Every info on how to flash via Odin is in this forum, just search.
After that root your friends phone.
I've atached the files for rooting only on Eclair 2.1.

Did you flash Tayutama's ROM using Odin? Or did you use the update.zip method?
Well, here's all the steps you need to follow in detail:
1) Flash JM8 using Odin (follow flashing guide from Richtofen's thread).
2) Download Tayutama's JM8 ROM, rename the zip file to "update.zip" and put it on /sdcard. So it looks like /sdcard/update.zip. Turn off the phone. Get into recovery mode (volume up + home + power). Choose the option "Apply from sdcard: update.zip" or whatever. (NOTE: Don't flash this using Odin).
That's it. BTW, you lost all data on your mate's phone when you flashed JM8 onto it. Hope he isn't too mad.

Why not? You were able to do it before right? What happens if you try now?
EDIT: Wait, is it the international version of the Galaxy S (I9000) or the AT&T Vibrant (T959) AT&T Captivate I897?
Hold on just for a little while longer.
As long as the phone goes into recovery you havn't bricked it yet.
Go here and register and download a stock (non moded) firmware:
samfirmware.com
I recomend XXJM1 as that was the most stable for me until now, but other will do.
First wipe cache and format phone.
Then flash the stock firmware with repartition checked with Odin.
Then root the phone.
I've attached Odin and a text file explaining where to put each file.
Good luck.
I Can't get into recovery mode, the 3 button trick doesn't work. Im just stuck at the At&t screen, goes black and then back the at&t.
I think It's buggered.

Why is there a AT&T screen on a UK Orange I9000?
The 3-button trick has never worked on that phone or stopped working after the bad flashes? (coz I read in one of your posts that you tried getting into recovery mode and deleting cache/data?)
Yes the 3 button thing did work before just not now.
I didn't know it was at&t until I had flashes it, I just downloaded it from the development section.

did you flash a vibrant rom? i think there was a guy having the same problem some time ago here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782920
Please try all of these in the same order and see if anything gets the phone into Download Mode successfully.
Start with the phone turned off (remove and insert battery if necessary)
Method 1:
a) Hold down vol up + vol down.
b) While still holding down both the volume buttons, press and hold the power button.
Method 2:
a) Hold down vol up + vol down.
b) Plug in the USB cable to your computer while still holding down both the volume buttons.
Method 3:
a) Hold down only the vol down button.
b) Plug in the USB cable to your computer while still holding down the vol down button.
Don't even touch the power button in methods 2 and 3.
EDIT: Make sure the drivers are installed in the computer first. If you don't have the drivers, installing Kies would automatically install the required drivers for you. While trying these methods (connecting USB cable to computer), though, make sure Kies is completely closed (even from the system tray) and keep Odin open.
Hi Thanks for the info. Tried all your ideas and still nothing. My pc isn't recognising the phone anymore.

I have not flashed the rom yet this issue started exactly after rooting which is the first step i suppose.
These are the steps i followed:
For Froyo (2.2 and 2.2.1)
You need to grant yourself superuser access to system files on the phone. You also need Recovery 2e. You do that by installing CF-Root using the Odin flashing software.
1.1 - Pick the CF-Root matching your Firmware Version here
(take the v1.17 Busybox Version).
1.2 - Download Odin for Windows here.
1.3 - Install the needed USB drivers.
1.4 - Connect your phone to the computer and make sure that your phone has been recognized by Windows. You may need to do this several times before all drivers are configured correctly (unplug-plug-wait-unplug-plug until no more "Installing drivers" occurs).
1.5 - Unzip the downloaded file on your desktop.
1.6 - Make sure that your phone is NOT connected to your computer!
1.7 - Run Odin and make sure that that Partition and Clear EFS is not checked.
Just click on the PDA button and select the .tar file from your unzipped CF-Root file.
1.8 - Turn off your phone completely.
Restart it in Download Mode (Keep pressing both Volume Down + Home, press Power until the screen goes on). The phone will show a yellow logo and the word 'Downloading'.
1.9 - Connect your phone via the USB cable.
Odin should now recognize your phone (a COM port lightens up in yellow).
1.10 - Click on the Start button and wait while Odin flashes the CF-Root kernel.
1.11 - Your phone will automatically reboot when the flashing is complete.
The phone got stuck after the reboot and vibrates.Hope this helps for you guys to figure out the issue.
Thanks!
Download this Update.zip : http://www.multiupload.com/6OU2AGRSOD
Get into recovery mode and mount your sdcard. Connect your Phone via usb and open a command line window from your adb directory and enter this command : adb push Update.zip /sdcard Update.zip
Wait some sec and reboot your phone into recovery mode and apply sdcard: Update.zip
Try to root like this and tell me if it worked.

I think you should use Odin to flash back to older firmware and start from scratch.
https://www.wuala.com/Samsung Galax...al Firmwares/Europe/October/?key=AfzUZSU4SpKU
Download the JPM firmware, put it into PDA in Odin (make sure re-partition is unchecked) and flash again.

You have to use odin or heimdall to load a new Rom.

i really need help for my galaxy tab gt - p1000

i'm not an english expert, but i'll try to explain you what happened, and i hope you can help me.
i have a samsung galaxy tab gt - p1000, with an old version of android, 2.3.3, because it's one of the devices wich haven't got the update. but i have bought it about 5 months ago, so i didn't want to waste it. so i decided to put in it the new android version ice cream sandwich, 4.0. and i followed theese instructions:
Requirements and Reminders
To be able to flash the MIUI 4 Alpha ROM on your Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000, you need to satisfy the following requirements:
Root your Samsung Galaxy Tab 7″ and install ClockworkMod Recovery on it.
Fully charge your tablet’s battery.
Back up all important files and data on your device ( i.e. bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs, etc.).
Download the MIUI 4 Alpha ROM for the Galaxy Tab from here and save the file to your computer.
The procedure has been tested to work on the Galaxy Tab GT-P1000. It may or may not work on other models.
Use the instructions at your own risk. We shall not be held responsible for any damage to your phone if you follow these instructions.
Installation
Here’s how to install MIUI 4 ICS on your Galaxy Tab 7″:
Connect your tablet to your PC.
Copy the MIUI 4 ROM to your device’s internal storage.
Disconnect your tablet from the PC.
Turn off your tablet.
Reboot the Galaxy Tab into ClockworkMod Recovery by holding down the Volume Up key and the Power button simultaneously.
Once the device has booted into ClockworkMod Recovery, create a backup of your currently working ROM. You can do this from thestyle=”font-style: italic;”>Backup and Restore > Backupmenu. This backup will come in handy in case you want to revert to the original ROM of your device.
From the recovery menu, select “Wipe data/ factory reset” and confirm that you want to perform the action.
Select “Wipe Cache partition” and confirm that you want to perform the action.
Select “Advanced”, then “Wipe Dalvik cache” and confirm that you want to perform the action.
With your phone data completely wiped, you may now install the MIUI 4 ROM. From the recovery menu, select “Install zip from SD card”.
Select “Choose zip from SD card” and choose the ROM file that you have copied to your tablet earlier.
Confirm the installation by choosing “Yes”. The ROM will be flashed after confirmation.
Reboot your device.
Congratulations! You now have Ice Cream Sandwich (via MIUI 4 Alpha) on your Galaxy Tab P1000.
but at point 8 or 9, (i don't remember, but i think it isn't too much important) i had to stop, because i stucked. so i reboot the device, and i've formatted it. the device worked like always, and so i decided to download rom manager from the market. when i launched the application i saw that i could flash the system that i had put in the device directly from there. so i touched that option and i followed the first instructions. i flash the system as the rom mangaer app told me. but when the device reboot for installing, and doing it's thing (i'm not a computer and technology expert to D: ) it stopped at the first screen, ( the one that says "galaxy tab, samsung"), and it didn't go ahead. so i reboot in recovery mode switching off the device and rebooting it pulling the volume up button + the power button, but it doesn't worked. so i tried to reboot it pulling volum down button + power button and appeared a yellow triangle with the android man and the written: downloading do not turn off target
but it stucked there like the first screen. i waited that the device discharged, and i charged it another time, but when i charge it, it appear on the screen the battery icon, but it is blocked. and now i can't open it, and it doesn't work or answer at all.
i know that it's possible that i made mistakes following the instructions, or the instructions doesn't worked.... but now, how can i reboot or format my device.
i only need to reuse, the information or the documents in it are not important.
if you can, help me, thanks
Read my post here. Should be same way.

Hey guy, I can't give you all links now...but I will help you! I think I can
Excuse my spelling too, I am Russian and English is not my native language.
Watch the team overcome.net website for restock bundle and overcome kernel.
There are some modems, from,Odin in the bundle. I am not very good in English, please read some instructions on flashing roms by Odin, I can't fully explain...
You just connect your tab to Odin via download mode and flash restock. And then you flash kernel. OK, you have a clean 2.3 rom, but I really want you to go to CyanogenMod download center and download the latest nightly build. (OK, I don't know how to access it I just go to Devices page, choose any phone, select NIGHTLY BUILDS link and search for p1 in the list and download the nightly and flash it.
Something you can find or can't.
After flashing kernel for restock go to recovery and do wipe user data/factory reset and wipe cache. The system will startup then. Without this you'll get an infinite boot.
The overcome kernel will convert your file system. Please wait for it when your tab is charged and is booting. A robogirl will talk to you then
After flashing CM wipe it too!
Download GApps on goo.im to have Market and other Google apps! (Flashing via recovery)
I think that is all. If you have problems, send me a message, I'll try to help! Good luck!

You have indeed sofbricked your tab.
Google for "Overcome guide for galaxy tab 7" (can't post any links yet)
There you can find a direct link for the file "GB-stock-safe_v5.zip".
This contains the needed firmware and Odin tool to flash it.
Follow the soft brick guide given by gogol1996 with the content of the zipfile and you're back in business.

No such thing as a "soft brick". It just a term that newbies like to throw about for any occasion they haven't flashed device correctly and dont know how to use download mode or recovery to get their OS back up and running.
Your device is either "bricked" or it isnt. If you can use download or recovery, it isnt.
Here we go again.
What about if you can get to download mode but the internal flash is stuffed?
A few guys here got that. Not a brick?

Ok sorry, edited. If you can "use" download/recovery its not bricked.
99.9% of times the term "soft brick" is used though its simply that the user doesn't know how to use download mode and they have screwed up rom flash/kernel, get no boot or just boot loop etc and cant use recovery.
I like your original definition else where that says it is not bricked as long as you can flash it.
But that is obvious.

That usually only happens though when you are flashing via USB and you lose power or pull cable early etc, ie pull handbrake when flooring it
so there is a possible brick even if you have download/recovery mode.. another new thing I learn daily.

[Q] Ace Wont Go into CWM Recovery mode

Hi Guys,
**Alert : Noob Here **
So, I decided to install some custom ROM on my Samsung Galaxy ACE S5830 and went through loads of information on how to do so. So this is what i did - ( from the start) :
a. Rooted the phone ( from a file called upd_1.zip ( 925KB) by going into recovery mode)..
It worked fine and my phone got a 'superuser' on the application drawer.
b. Installed 'recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace-fix' using the recover mode. ( had to rename the file to update.zip coz the recovery mode was not reading the file ).. Worked properly as i got another application 'CWM' on my application drawer.
c. Now, just to check if my CWM was doing good in recovery mode, I switched off my cell, pressed 'vol-up + home + power-up' button to go into recovery mode.. I got some text on the top left corner of the screen with a SAMSUNG logo on the screen...and then it got stuck there...i waited for some time but nothing happened.
I removed the battery and tried switching on the phone normally ( just power-up the phone ) (just to ensure that it still works) and now, the phone is stuck with the SAMSUNG logo on the screen and doesn't work at all !!!
I am confused as after installing CWM, i did switch on the phone normally and it seemed to work fine..but now after I pressed 'vol-up + home + power-up' buttons, its stuck at the black screen with LOGO on it...
Any clue what's wrong with my phone??
Did you flash the correct software for your model of device?

I think you just bricked your phone, you have to flash a stock Rom.
Recovery Mode: Power + Home + Vol Up.

I am pretty sure that I took the right software for my model. I even made sure that its S5830 and not S5830i

You have used the wrong combo & have got yourself in the ram dump mode. The combination for recovery is, power + home button simultaneously & when something appears on phone, leave the power button while still holding the home key. Btw, no need to announce a high alert that you're a noob or such unless you're a badass
@ Ppl : Read what he's done carefully & reply if you know. Don't confuse the newbies.

Haha - the alert was just for the experienced guys to not use 'experts terminology' while explaining me what to do
Well, I tried following your method. I help d home button and the power button and let go for the power button when 'SAMSUNG' appeared while still holding the home button...but nothing happened.. The screen is stuck at that particular screen itself with no progress..
Should I flash my phone with stock firmware as advised by the guys above?
GUYS !!!
I restored the phone with stock ROM and a tutorial from another member about flashing stock ROM from ODIN got my cell working !!!
Yayyy !!!
( I was **** scared when read the line that if the flashing fails in first 15 secs ( boot loader flashing) my phone is bricked ):fingers-crossed:
Thanks a lot guys - all of you ...for the help...:victory:
**BUT**
I still want to instal custom ROM to my device...and since I ve committed a mistake in he past doing so, will any1 would be kind enough to show me the path ( link ) to enlightenment ( installing custom ROM from the start ) ?
So,
I thought its better to search for things ranther than troubling you guys to spoon feed me everything...
For rooting, I am gonna try doing everything from the start and be a little more attentive.
1. So, from hubix's guide, I downloaded the below mentioned bold file:
"SuperOneClick 2.3.3 (for 2.2> firmwares) or Universal Gingerbread Root/Unroot (for 2.3< firmwares)"
2. To install CWM , i downloaded the following file :
"ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.6 (Fixed!)""
3. Since my phone Android version is 2.3.6, I would go with 'Db' method of rooting :
"Db. Rooting for 2.3.x (NEW METHOD!):
Download file called universal_gb_root_v25.zip and copy it to your sdcard
Turn off your phone
Press POWER+HOME BUTTON
Select update from sdcard, select the file universal_gb_root_v25.zip
After the update completed - reboot
Now you have rooted S5830"
4. Then, follow up the the Flash Custom Recovery steps from the same page, which is as follows :
Put recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace.zip into SD Card
Turn off your phone
Press POWER+HOME BUTTON
Select Update Zip From SD-Card option. [If you are on previous version of CWM recovery then you might need to select Install Zip From SD Card and then Choose Zip From SD Card Option simultaneously. ]
Select recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace.zip and flash it
Reboot your device
Please let me know if I am correct or will following these steps would screw up my phone again ???
You're correct.

Cool..now coming to installing the custom ROM, can I install any custom ROM ? Because in few of the ROM's, there is something mentioned as
"This Rom is based on CyanogenMod 10.1 for Galaxy Ace"
What is this supposed to mean ?? Are there any other parameters which decide on the factors on what ROMs can be costumed installed??
( for example in some ROM i also saw something to do with ext partition )

I probably can't. But you can try as followed:
- Install Samsung drivers + start ODIN (You probably already have)
- Pull out battery
- Put in USB cable (I'm sure you have tried another cable yet)
- Press key combo for download mode (Vol down + power + home)
- Put the battery back in while still holding down the keys.
