I had been using my Captivate for a while, and used Kies mini to upgrade to Froyo, and everything had been working fine until randomly the phone wouldn't boot.
It would take forever to go from the AT&T home screen, and would lag through the galaxy s intro, and then stop.
I tried to use Recovery mode, and it didn't work, so I tried to use Odin3 to flash back to stock.
Now it won't go past the Logo screen, and recovery mode doesn't work, but download mode still does. I have tried Odin one click, and Odin three click v 1.0, 1.3, and 1.7. I've used the .tar and the .pit from Breakin' Ranh's [Guide] How to Recover a Captivate to Stock 2.1 Eclair JH7
It keeps getting stuck in a boot loop after odin, no matter what I do.
Any suggestions?
Using SGH-i897
1007
first boot takes along time to build new files and delvik.. are you sure you waited long enough?
keep trying to get into recovery. try holding the buttons a little after the screen comes on.
factory wipe/ clear phone/
It keeps going to the AT&T logo screen for like 10 seconds, and then goes to the spinning wheel/battery charging screen, and then reboots.
Can't get into recovery mode through it, still.
a different .tar package.... dunno about that one..
or flash to 2.2 tar package
I have to use rom manager to get to recovery on my captivate

I was able to use a dragon rom to get it to boot, but now my phone wont give me any access to my internal sd card, and won't mount my external, so I can't download rom manager because I "have no room" Where do I go from here?
I've already tried formatting both cards, and it seems like nothing happens whenever I click on format.
you dont need rom manager....ever
Then what does he need?

I can get into download mode (only with a JIG tho) but when I go back to stock with Odin (or try to) it's just stuck in the AT & T logo screen, it doesn't go beyond that, how do I get into recovery mode, press both Volume buttons and Power button, when the AT&T screen comes release the Power button right?
Need some help please!
you might need to flash the 3 button fix but keep trying, if you get into recovery clear data and cache. but first boot always takes a long time as it has to build delvak cache and more... try flashing again, with the 3 button fix att rom.
3 button fix? to get into download mode you mean? I CAN get into download mode (with the jig) but not into recovery mode :-s
I have no idea how to flash it without being in the Stock rom, any help?
download is 2 buttons
recovery is 3 button.
some phones loose the 3 button combo to get into recovery.
in that case you need to flash the stock rom with 3 button fix.
it is for Att only so i dont know much more.
After Odin, I was in a boot loop yesterday. I plan on writing it up in a new thread to see if someone can help me understand what happened (cause I have Odined and modded two different cappys without issue) but here is how I was able to recover.
After Odin was complete and said successful, it reboots the phone.
Upon reboot I was in the ATT boot loop. After Odin, I lost both three button recovery and 2 button download (both of these worked before Odin). I don’t have a JIG so no way of getting to download mode.
I read to try the following sequence after reading it other posts.
1. Pull battery, sim, SD card and unplug the USB. Let it sit for a minute.
2. Plug in the USB cable.
3. Holding all three buttons, plug in the battery.
4. The battery charge (grey) should be seen on the phone. After the phone screen goes black twice let go of the power button.
This worked for me once, after several attempts.
Now that the phone booted back up, I did a master clear with Odin.
Upon reboot right back in to the ATT boot loop screen.
Was not having any luck with the steps above after several attempts.
Here is how I eventually recovered.
1. I opened Odin on the PC.
2. Pulled the battery and USB for a minute or two then replaced it and plugged in the USB cable.
3. After few cycles of black battery icon and spinning wheel, the batter icon turned green (like normal when you turn your phone off and plug it in). Sometimes this only took two cycles and sometimes many cycles (or a few minutes).
4. Once the battery icon was green, I hit the power button.
5. As soon as you see the ATT screen, pull the USB cable and the phone booted (if I left the USB plugged in, the phone went back to the black battery screen after the ATT screen).
6. I copied the correct Update.zip and Rom to my SD card.
From here I tried to boot into recovery via ADB.
The phone rebooted but back into the ATT boot loop.
Following the second set of steps above (2-3 times), I was finally able to get into Clockwork recovery.
From here I flashed Phoenix Unleashed.
After the flash rebooted and the phone seems to be running fine now (with the exception that I lost my 3 and 2 button combos, but that will be for a different thread).
From the Power Menu, I can get into download mode or Recovery no prob.
Not sure if this is something that will work for others but wanted to throw it out there just in case.
It never booted for me, so this is what I did
For anoyone that might find this thread, Odin 1 Click didn't work for me, so I flashed back into stock using Odin (not the 1 click version, another one), here are some links that proved to be very helpful (I ended up Flashing to Serependity 6.4):

FIXED:
Used this version of Odin to get me into recovery mode:

hello all,
question about the 3 button fix for the captivate. I just got the captivate a few months back and before i decided to rom it i investigated all the recovery tools i would need just in case.
I found 2 different variants of Odin3 one that needed a pit file and PDA file and another that had just one click restore to 2.1.
I tried the pit / PDA first if i recall it appeared to lock up, not sure on what part but i got it back in DL mode and then tried the one click which worked.
now let me preface this with before i tried anything i ensured the 3 button combo for download mode worked, and it did. I flashed Apex 5.2 and ever since then the 3 button combo ceased to work. I recently flashed to Firefly 3.0 and still the 3 button doesnt work, it would also appear the recovery mode does not work as well.
I have been getting to these modes using ADB, which works fine, but I would love to get 3 button back... but if its a risky procedure i will live with it, i do have a jig on the way, which just in case i can use to get back. but that leaves recovery mode not really accessable unless i use ADB?
any how thoughts comments suggestions are all welcome and thanks for being such an awesome site!
On a custom rom, hold the power button. Extended power menu has recovery and download right there.
How have you not seen it??
also SEARCH there is an odin that fixes the 3 button combo...
download mode is 2 button combo and no way to loose it.
hold both volumes + then plug in usb (keep held til screen comes on)
recovery mode is 3 button combo..
hold both volumes + then hold power (keep ALL held til screen comes on for 3 seconds)
studacris,
Yes i have seen the reboot into recovery, which is great the only issue i have is when flashing a different rom i want a back out solution. I also have found the fix, but was wondering how risky is it to apply this fix, and will it stay fixed? i would rather live with a minor inconvenience then a hard brick situation. thanks for the info=)
edit: this is the thread i was reading for the fix is this the most up to date one? also the attachment is missing the PIT file, is it needed anymore?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439
TRusselo,
yeah i cant do either of those, which is my concern
odin one click flashes both bootloaders but sometimes, in later build phones the one click sbl.bin will, lose it's combo. The fix flashes the secondary bootloader, that is known to always work.
It's about as risky to flash as odin one click if not safer because it's only flashing one bootloader instead of both.
The pit file isn't needed you are not messing with the partitioning table in the least. Just put the .tar in the pda slot.
Just note, if you go to gingerbread, go back to stock with the one click. If you use the 3 button fix version you will guaranteed brick your phone.
Important to note that if you've flashed an I9000 based ROM your 3 button may have changed to vol up-home-power. If that doesn't work and you're on a 2.1 or 2.2 ROM then you've probably just lost the sbl for 3 button and need to reflash it.
You should always be able to get into download mode via hold down vol up and vol down and plugging in the USB cable, I've never lost that.
awesome thank you for putting my mind at ease,
if i flash the fix will i need to flash the fix every time i flash to a new froyo based rom?
hmm odd cause i seem to have lost download mode.
what i have been doing to get into DL mode is;
turn off the phone,
pull battery and sim (i dont have an external SD),
put battery back
hold vol up and vol down then plug in usb cable that is connected to a PC i will get a battery charging display on screen
once you flash it you should be good to flash whatever else on top of it.
one last thing,
in that thread i linked with the fix, the instructions say to take a PDA.tar file and a pit file which was added with the odin download, but the odin download is by itself no pit file, opening the PDA.tar file i can see the SBL.bin file so i am assuming that we may not need the pit file?
you dont need the pit. it is fine.
thank you, i'll give it a try next time a flash a new rom =)
i appreciate all the info guys =)
While flashing back to stock using Odin, something happened after the install and my phone ended up rebooting, and I have not been able to turn it on since.
-When attempting to power on normally, phone shows white AT&T screen and hangs there
-When attaching USB, phone shows battery screen but battery is all grey and rotating progress icon is frozen. Does not appear to be charging.
-Computer does not recognize phone in any state. Latest USB drivers are installed and I have had no issues connecting via USB previously.
-Cannot get into download or recovery mode using any volume/power button combination or through adb. Also tried attaching USB with ODIN running while attempting button combinations, inserting/removing battery etc, still nothing.
- I have tried removing battery, plugging in usb, hold down up/down/power, plug battery in, let go of power, and it still goes into a stuck grey battery charging screen.
Has anyone else experienced this? Anything else I should try?
Usb jig to force download mode
This package after that
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143
So all I need is a JIG to force download mode and flash ODIN until it works?
That's what I said
I mean I can try and come up with more complicated directions if you want a harder solution?

I dont think you are supposed to use power button here. Try again with out it. If you are on Gingerbread, hold volume down and insert usb from the phone powered off, you'll get dl mode.
I made the JIG, got into download mode.
I followed the instructions using JF6 Odinv3 1.3.
Is there supposed to be a PIT file or only TAR? Because after flashing I still get stuck at the battery charging screen.

No pit file. Only tar, it goes into pda slot.
ok I got into download mode using the jig and I found out that I had to follow the instructions for models that are over 1010 and those instructions had a PIT and TAR file. Worked like a charm and I am just glad my phone has been saved. Thanks for the help!
I am having the same issue, regarding the battery screen and AT&T splash screen.
I'm having trouble getting my computer to recognize my phone after running it through Odin. Odin claimed to be successful in restoring the phone, but I'm not sure what to do to get the computer to recognize the phone.
Thoughts? I'm running Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron duo-core desktop.
okay from what I can tell just make a jig. I am no engineer but the instructions online are really easy to follow. Just go to radioshack and buy the 100k ohms resistors 1/4 watt 5% resistance. Make the jig and follow the instructions on how to force your phone into download mode. Once you enter download mode, dont plug in the usb yet. Open Odin first, THEN plug in the usb. Have you also updated or installed your samsung usb drivers?
Has anyone tried to hard reset?

Hi all, any help woud be much appreciated.
I flashed a stock ROM with Heimdall, and just as it was starting to send the PIT file, it stated that there was no 'end of PIT file' notification.
Then it sent a reboot message to my phone. After that, no indication of power, no lights on the soft-buttons, nothing.
Pulled battery, reinserted. Nothing. Tried plugging into power as well, nothing.
Any ideas what's wrong? Even if it can't boot it should at least power up right?
Hello,
I have a Galaxy tab p1000 which is bricked (I think).
I get this menu when it boots up: (I'm new here and posting links is not alowed for me )i.imgur.com/1a0unwF.jpg
None of the options work.
I can't get my pc to recognize the device though. So flashing something with Odin or Heimdall doesn't seem to work.
Do you think this is fixable?
Help will be much appreciated,
Thanks
Can you boot to download mode?
(From off state, hold Vol-Down arrow, then press power button until the screen lights up. Then let go of power but hold on to Vol down).
In download mode, if Odin/heimdall detects, then flash stock rom.
For example, use Overcome method linked to in my signature.
Make sure yours is P1000 for that to work.

I can put the tab in download mode. When I open Heimdall -Utilities- Detect Device->Detect
It says Device detected. But Odin doesn't detect it.
Reinstall USB driver that is for Odin

Ok. So Odin recognizes the tablet now. I tried to flash stock rom but it didn't work. The tablet restarted and the same menu popped up.
That is Odin with PIT file and repartition.

I tried reflashing several times with Odin 1.7, gt-p1000_mr.pit in pit and the
P1000XWJQ8_P1000PROJQ1_P1000XXJPZ_HOME.tar.md5 file in pda
I keep getting the same error E: failed to mount /data
Okay. So I reflashed it this time using your GB-Stock-Safe-v5 files and it worked.
I can't believe it. Thank you so much for this.
