Alright so here's the deal....
I've had this Nook Color for a long time but i l've realized it's become more of a toy to tinker with instead of a tablet. I was constantly working on it instead of using it as a tablet. So i gave up and posted it on Ebay and was going to sell it but now i've installed the latest phiremod and... i feel like my nook is finally there. Video is actually worth a damn and it's all smooth. What would you guys do? How does the tab compare now? Still a little smoother but not much or.... all opinions welcome. Sorry for punctuation, typing on nook color.
Edited for... everything.
I think you should keep it. I used it just to experiment when I was runing froyo but now I 'm using the latest CM7 (rc4) and I 'm now really using it as a tablet [browsing, reading, some games and the occasional navigation]. It's the perfect tablet for the money I paid.
The cpu speed is equal or better if you use the overclock kernel, the graphics are equal now, the operating system is better cuz it can run gingerbread where the galaxy is just froyo. All in all for 250 bucks youre way way better off with the nook.. and its getting better everyday with the cm7 nightlies.

Hi,
no, they aren't. The galaxy has a newer, more advanced graphic chipset. It's been reported to play almost any video you throw at it, while the nook has significant limitations.

I say keep it. When CM7 goes final with the Tablet Tweaks and Phiredrop mods it, it's going to be epic. That dude really knows how to put a user interface together.

I think the Galaxy can do 720p videos (no need to reencode, can stream from your main system or whatever.)
I also think the bluetooth has a longer range, and it has cameras? It's good stuff, but it's also more expensive.

Which one? The one I see is like $1100?
If you have $1100 to spend, that certainly isn't a bad way to spend it if you want the rugged reliability of the SSD storage.
I also like the $1100 IBM/Lenova Thinkpad convertable. It has better stats and bigger storage, but it uses a normal type of harddrive.

Showing up online for $400 for 16GB and $500 for 32GB.
We all have different requirements but to me the only real competition to a rooted Nook Color right now is the Galaxy Tab. Anything bigger than 8" is in laptop/netbook size territory, which just is not as portable.
And the price of a Galaxy Tab is now in NC territory although you have monthly contract charges for 2 years...
The extra cost involved with the contract, or buying one outright, will keep me happily using an NC. When a 7" tablet with significantly better specs and quality becomes available in the same price range- >$250 then I may consider it.
Right now there is nothing.
But if the size doesn't bother you- well, I have no input really because I haven't seen ANY 10" tablet I would buy.
Thanks for all the replies so far guys. Also sorry for the quality of that post last night. I was using NC and was too tired to really want to fix it. Anyways...
I agree that 7" is just the right size. The IPad is great and all but it's so bulky. That's why it's between this and the Galaxy Tab. I'm still not sure. I really do like this a lot and it's actually usable since installing RC4 version of Phiremod. Just want something where everything is smooth and works perfectly. Before, the argument couldn't be made that the nook color was all that smooth but it's worlds better now. Thanks for all your input guys.
Ok, here is my next question then, since we agree on the 7" size:
What os are you using?
Stock rooted?
Froyo?
Honeycomb?
CyanogenMod7?
I have gone through all of the above to one degree or another, HC for the shortest time due to the issues since source is not out.
Once CM7 was available I have not even read a thread about another.
It may still be in the nightly/RC stage, but CM7 is extremely good as it is and is in very active development to complete making things perfect.
One of the issues we all have with the NC- lack of hard buttons- even has a project at the "feature freeze" point of bug fixes before release- Tablet Tweaks.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002000
Do us both a favor and at least try it before you spend money.
You may decide that you don't need to.
(Note: if you are already running CM7 then ignore my post. )
Having seen what even a stock rooted Android 2.1 Nook Color can do, I wouldn't spend money on another 7" tablet. I might buy a 10" Honeycomb tablet like the XOOM if the prices come down for use at home where the extra screen real-estate outweighs the decreased portability. But the Nook Color would still be the device I take with me when I'm leaving home.

It's not double, its $150 more. Comparing it to the 32GB model isn't fair.
You gain a bigger screen (debatable if it's worth it- but for me- typing a little on a 7" screen would be an awkward size, 10" makes it better). And much more power... And bluetooth and all that jazz. With the ability to run 3.0 natively.
Worth $150, up to you.
Take the $300 GTablet. No IPS screen. Is $100 for an IPS screen running 3.0 worth $100? I think so.
Is it worth $150 more than the NC? That's more debatable I think, because you already have a IPS screen. The only thing lacking is 3.0 and the power.
Now....... If the keyboard is included in that $400 price: hands-down, $150 for a tablet you can attach a keyboard to is a freaking no-brainer... The Eee Pad Transformer kills the NC.
But if the keyboard is optional, it's up for debate.
Anytime I've seen the Eee Pad Transformer listed accidentally, it always seems to have the keyboard included. But other times, it seems like it might be an optional thing you buy extra. Weather or not the keyboard is part of that $400 is a huge thing, in my opinion.
If it is, not only does it murder the competition in the tablet market, it'll also murder the competition in the netbook market.
I'm waiting for release (rumored to be April 9) and pricing, and to see if the keyboard is included or not. That Eee Pad Transformer could viably be, a laptop replacement. 16 hours of battery life is awesome. The ability to also use it as a tablet is a huge plus as well.
The ONLY thing- I would want it to be able to do: is boot Windows (so I can use full Office and Windows programs). If I could make it do that: this is an awesome device. Why?
1) Light, long lasting netbook with some power
2) Full Windows apps (stream to 360, etc)
3) Tablet PC for light browsing or on the move
One device to rule them all, one device to bind them......

Of course but the problem is... The NC doesn't have that hardware configuration, lol.
I'm guessing, since it just released 4.5 months ago, we won't see a NC until this fall again. I love the fact B&N isn't trying to crush the open source community on it so I've got hope the next one will be the same way. They need to keep the cost cheap- I think they realize (especially with the upcoming update) they've nailed the cost/feature ratio. Hopefully they don't think, "It's a tablet now, let's charge more" on the NC2.
I'll say keep it and buy better tablet down the road.
I'm really interested in the Asus Transformer ($400 for 16GB) but I'll keep my Nook Color.
If you guys want to keep the 7" factor, but gain powerful hardware, wait for this to release stateside.

But for the same price (actually cheaper)... the Asus 10" gives you IPS, twice the RAM, twice the space...
While if you want 7" this will be the best viable option, could you deal with 3" bigger for better hardware, is the question.

So I have a brother that is looking into purchasing a nook, but would also want an android tablet but I've seen this nook rooted and have honeycomb ported. And well for half the price I think it worth it. But what would you guys say since you guys are using it hands on
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Well, there's lots of reading in the forum for more info. In a nutshell, I'd say the NC is a nice piece of hardware with a great screen for a great price. It does a lot well, but it is no Xoom. Of course, you can buy like 3 NCs for the price of one Xoom, and considering the relatively underdeveloped market that is tablets (android apps especially), I don't think the Xoom or ipad are worth the money. The NC on the other hand is a nice eReader with benefits right out of the nifty packaging. It also is fun for the tinkerer and the modder at heart, yet the mods (CM7) are totally useable to anyone that can use a smartphone. Oh, and you can run all your mods on an SD card and not burn your warranty.
If you are looking to use honeycomb, then you probably wont be happy. It just hasn't been out long enough to get the best experience.
Why would they not be happy with Honeycomb? I've read mostly positive reviews. Also it mostly Android except for a bunch of GUI tweaks so saying it's not fully cooked is a bit of a stretch!
I guess I just found it less smooth than CM7. Has Google released the source code to the release version yet? I thought that was stalling development.
HC on the nook is not working well still due to not having source out. With that said, CM7 now has tablet tweaks which makes Android 2.3 into, basically, a tablet OS and works great on the Nook. If your brother wants a good android tab for under 300 bucks, the NC is the way to go. If he wants to spend the 600-800 on the Xoom, then he'll be happier. For me, it was the price difference that made me go with the Nook. You should be seeing more official tabs pop up over the next year, so if he just wants to break into the android tablet market, a NC might be the way to go, then save up for a better one and buy it next year.
Thanks everyone that was ALL great information he getting nook

Yeah, and Anand had a pretty good review of it. Thankfully, Asus doesn't cut corners on the screen quality. The nice thing about the Eee is that there will probably be many more models to come. Good for when tablets finally find their niche and I can get something good for $300 or so.
As for a cheap tablet, should I purchase a Nook Color? $250, isn't a bad deal.
Is it worth it? Laggy?
It's worth it. Benchmarks running cm7 beat the benchmarks of my evo running sense.
Well, it really depends on what you want to do.
As a tablet pc for the price it can't be beat, Don't buy it if you are expecting a powerhouse of a mobile device that will play crysis 2.
For my uses it's a perfect device, I use it for email, web surfing, rss feeds and ebooks and for a little music off and on.
If you are looking for something that has manufacturer support and will play HD movies with no configuration and has a battery that will last for a week with 3g wireless, then no this will not be the best for you.
All-in-all though I love it esp for the price, what this 'ereader' can do is amazing.
But before you buy you really need to ask yourself what you want to do,otherwise you will be like the other poster in the 'I regret buying a nook' thread....
It does depend on your expectations. If you want something that just works great out of the box with no effort, this is potentially your device. The stock works very well. The browser is very responsive and the Pulse app is great. All I would need in the stock is a comic book reader and it would be perfect as-is.
Now, if you want lots of functionality, you can install a new OS either internally or on an SD card. For the SD route, the experience is quite good. Not really much lag at all with my Sandisk Class 4. For running off a card, its impressive and I understand the internal install is even better. Once they get honeycomb ironed out and stable, it will be perfect.
I have an iPad, bought it new, love it. I bought an NC 10 days ago and gave it to my girlfriend as a gift. I am thinking about buying another one for me. For $250 I think they're awesome. The screen is very nice. I think it is only going to get more useable.
ps: first post

How are you in my brain??? (kidding)
That being said, my buddy bought a nook the day he saw CM7 on mine. He also liked blowing away my EVOs quadrant score, but got mad when I kicked him off my tethering for gloating.
I wouldn't buy one retail for $250 when you can save a bit by shipping around or if you are ok buying used. I see two for under $200 locally on craigslist.

short answer ... definitely worth it. Had mine for a few days, installed CM7 (Gingerbread). Much better than what I had expected from a $250 device. The soft keys are unresponsive on very rare occasions.
Four months ago, it was far and away the best value you could get in a small tablet. It still is a great value and I have no regrets, but the Asus Eee Pad Transformer is incredibly intriguing. However, by the time you get the max RAM and dock, it's much more than 2x the price of the nook.

I'd caution against this approach. $50 is not a large enough savings to take the chance on latent problems and then dealing with potential warranty headaches born from not having the original receipt. If you're comfortable with that risk, then by all means.

Personally, I bought it as an expensive toy. I've used it mostly for leisure e-reading, browsing, and textbooks. I've stuck a few engineering textbooks on it (works surprisingly well with EZPDF and landscape mode). Although, I do think a 10" screen at the very least would be more comfortable fit for textbooks.
When it's in not use, it's usually sitting on my desk as a photo frame in slideshow mode. And I have to say, the pictures really do look awesome thanks to the sexy IPS screen.
All in all, well worth the $250+tax I payed for it nearly 4 months ago. Going from stock to autonootered to froyo/honeycomb to CM7/phiremod made it feel like it just kept getting better.
Currently using the latest CM7 build overclocked to 1300 MHz. Browsing runs smooth enough in Dolphin HD to not be an annoyance.
I used mine as an eReader for the first time today! LOL
Makes an awesome tablet...so yeah, its worth it!
test one out. it's 1000x better rooted. i enjoy mine.
why don't they just make it into a full tablet and sell more?!?
Just go for it and you wont repent. Worth every penny, rather lot more!
Last year the Nook Color was an awesome value for just $250. It was a 7 inch Android device with a 1024x600 resolution IPS display, 800MHz processor with SGX530 graphics, and 512MB of RAM. Out of the box it was mostly just an ereader, but it isn't difficult to root and you can even boot a seperate ROM straight from an SD card without having to modify the stock OS, very awesome.
This year though, some nicer tablets have come down in price. The Nook Color is certainly still the best at it's price range. But there are some tablets not much more expensive that have some advantages worth spending a bit more money on.
The Galaxy Tab wifi is $350.
+ It's a tablet out of the box and Android 2.3 is rolling out.
+ 385 grams, it's lighter than the 422 gram Nook Color.
+ 1GHz TI OMAP 3630 processor, Nook Color is a 800MHz TI OMAP 3621.
+ 16GB internal storage.
+ Dual cameras.
+ More attractive appearance, flat glass front, white back.
+ Easily accessible microSD slot.
- Not an IPS display.
The ASUS Transformer is $400
+ Android 3.0 Honeycomb.
+ 10 inch 1280x800 IPS display
+ 1GHz dual core Tegra 2 processor
+ 1GB RAM
+ 16GB internal storage
+ Dual cameras.
+ More attractive appearance (yeah, I think the NC is ugly as sin)
+ Easily accessible microSD slot.
- Heavier weight compared to 7 inch tablets (same as iPad)
If you don't want to spend more than $250, then the Nook Color is awesome. But for just $100 to $150 more, I think you can get quite a lot more value from a tablet these days.
I would definitely say its worth it. I was originally looking at the Asus transformer for my first tablet but after the ridiculously low stock at launch I settled on the Acer iconia. It was a nice tablet and I liked it a lot but couldn't justify 450 bucks for what's basically a toy and also I like to tinker with things and it looks like that one won't be getting any custom roms for a while at least so I returned it and picked up the nook.
The first night I installed cm7 and haven't looked back since. I was especially glad I got the nook when the Netflix app came out since we can make it work on the nook very easily and I don't think that's possible on the iconia tab at all yet. I've been running cm7 overclocked to 900 MHz with the cm7 settings and it runs well for my uses, ebooks, web browsing, music, and some games. Theres really only two negatives I've noticed, one is the lack of haptic feedback and the other is wifi issues at my work. I'm not sure what causes it but it constantly loses the connection and as soon as I go into wifi settings page it reconnects. It works fine connected to my home network though and also when using my g2 as a wifi hotspot. Overall I really like it and think it is definitely worth the money especially compared to other tablets that's are available.
The only tablet I see which may rival the nook color is the sonicview gtab.

I had what sounds like a similar problem too. Wi-Fi Lock seems to have solved my problems with wifi and CM7.
i think the Nook Color is a great value at under $300. That said, you can also get a G-Tablet for about $299 now fairly easily. Of those two, I'd go with the NC because of its size, display, and build quality. It's not as fast though.
That said, I am no longer an owner of a NC. I just sold it on craigslist an hour ago for $235 with some accessories included. I recently purchased the Acer A500 honeycomb tablet and I love it. I was surprised I'd like the larger size and weight (heaviest tablet...) but it actually feels nice and solid. The speed of the Tegra 2 + 1gb DDR3 Ram is a huge step up from the Nook Color even with root/overclock and lots of tweaking.
Since a few other comparisons have been brought up in here, what do you guys think about the ViewPad7 for $50 more?
I'm on the fence too. Between NC and wifi tab, I can't seem to decide. I was an early adopter; bought NC within 1st week of release but returned it as then there weren't any custom roms etc. is the sammy tab worth $100 more for the hard keys and gps? I would use mostly for browsing, second as a reader. Can anyone care battery life between the two (post rootingNC of course)?

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Acer_Iconia_Tab-A100-7_inch_Tablet-Release_date,news-12019.html
Its been a long, long time since we first clapped eyes on Acer's Iconia Tab A100 tablet. The company unveiled the slate last fall, at a special event in NYC, and showed it off again at CES. It was scheduled for launch in May but delayed due to compatibility issues with Honeycomb. Since then, Acer hasn't exactly been itching to tell us when the 7-inch A100 is going to hit stores.
Today, things changed. Engadget cites an anonymous tipster in reporting that an email sent out to Acer retail partners says the tablet will launch in August (which, in case you hadn't noticed, starts on Monday). The A100 boasts Nvidia's Tegra 2 chipset, a 7-inch 1024x600 display, 512MB RAM, 8GB of internal storage and Google's Android 3.0 (aka Honeycomb) OS.
The A100 joins the A500, Acer's 10-inch offering that launched in April of this year. Word on the street is that the A100 will retail for $300. The A500 currently retails for $400 on Newegg.

Don't forget that this is the only unbrickable tabby.
I am still waiting to see what the battery life is on this thing. If the reported 1500 mah is correct, it would probably only last around 2-2.5 hours with wifi and everything else running. If this is the case, then why not just buy an Asus eeepc for around the same amount of money and more features and not have to be stuck to a power cord most of the time?
If this has a GPS built in it might be a good buy. GPS is the only thing I miss with the Nook.
Battery comparison:
Nook Color: 4000 mah, maybe 9-10 hours
Samsung Focus: 1500 mah, probably 5-6 hours because it is a phone.
Whats-its-face tablet with 1500 mah: 3 hours if lucky.
Honeycomb on a 7" screen? ver. 3.0 no less? I'm not sure that I buy that part. I do not think Google is promoting any version of Honeycomb on screens under 10".
Just my 2 cents worth....
The quality of the screen is going to be a big factor. That along with the battery life will determine how decent of a machine this is compared to the NC.
I think the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be the first one i consider upgrading too(now that the touchpad is out and less than stellar). Although the hardest part about moving past the nook is that i use the reader software as much as anything else.
Vizio VTab is Awesome
Had bought a Nook Color & rooted it, CM7, etc... Just took a chance on the Vizio ($329 at Costco). 8" of goodness with a Cortex A8 running at 1GHz, real buttons (they rotate as you turn from portrait to landscape) and three stereo speakers (also rotate as above), 1026 x 768 capacitive display
and I can't find much bloatware! Takes up to 32 GB SD Card
Tried to root with Gingerbreak and Z4Root - no joy yet. I may have to do it the old-fashioned way.
And it has the Nook app in ROM!

So what will the battery life of those things be..?
Interesting. I really haven't paid any attention to what's coming...

Maybe the third gen Archos tablets won't be complete CRAP? We'll see
Acer A100 Now in stock..
It's now in stock at Superbiiz.com and on eBay (If I had to guess, the sellers on eBay are in with the same bunch at Superbiiz). Between $345-350 shipped either way you go, but from what I understand it should be selling for $300 or less on the official release date, which is now moved back to sometime in October. Thinking seriously about jumping on one just to play with it, but it seems kinda silly as I have my NC and my Acer A500 already. I've been pretty impressed with my A500 so far, so I've got high hopes for the A100. I'm looking forward to seeing a review discussing the battery life, that's the only thing that concerns me. I'll probably get a 7"-9" tablet later on this year, looks like there are going to be multiple options out there.
You still can't beat the NC though... unbrickable, the perfect size, and you can pick one up for under $200 sometimes.

I stand corrected. I had thought it was this month too, then read a article that came out this weekend that said, "Acer's press release page has officially announced availability of the Acer A100 beginning in October...", then gave a link to the press release. When you open the link the Acer release says "4 Aug 2011 - Acer’s ICONIA TAB A100 - The 7” tablet based on Android 3.2 now available!
The wait is over! The 7” Acer ICONIA TAB A100, built on Android 3.2, is now available on the shelves..."
So I guess it's officially released.
But I'm looking at one of the Vizios now to keep on the coffee table, I can use the excuse that it makes for a bad-ass remote to justify spending the money.
Just saw one at the local Target o.0

Wow this has been a great run with everyone in the nook community.
I have been with xda for sometime and seen a few theads and devices in my days. Lol. Out of all of them though the nook has had the best community. Great devs and some great nabs as well. Going for the plunge and getting a 16gb N7. Seems like the best bang for the Buck and has some great hardware in it. (ASUS) not Samsung lol. Mirage for the nook really is the greatest rom so far for the nook. I am going to keep the nooky for the wife to use. Thanks again everyone.

Hope you enjoy your N7. I'm loving mine, but you never really leave the Nook community. I'm sure you'll be browsing to see what is new.
I also made the move to a Nexus 7. The Nook will be hanging around a while for the kids and as a play/dev device for myself. I will miss the Nook community as well. I plan to leave the N7 stock for as long as I can manage it.
I'm posting this from my N7, but I just can't bring myself to part with my NC. It's been my constant companion for almost 2 years. I even purchased a murse (man purse) to carry it.
It has been ballgames, several graduations, jury duty and even to church!!!
N7 am gonna hav it soooon:thumbup:

Plus I do need to get a new laptop that has really good batterylife. My xps17 gets 2 and a half hours MAX. And the transformer gets 10 to 15 hours. Hey guys how long does the ñ7 last? And does anyone here have one of the cases that has a Keyboard? Wondering cause I would like to know how it handles with typing. I do about 65- 90 wpm depending if I am checking spelling. Lol

10-15 hours? With brightness as low as it can go and wireless + BT off, and not doing anything heavy?
I be never really kept track, but I can probably get 7-8 with normal use.

That would still be great for school. If I am spending more time then 8 hours at school, better be getting my phd. Lol
I love the hdmi out part too. Hook it up to my tv with my drive of movies through the usb port on the dock and I am totally set. I was thinking of getting a mini pc for that but this kills 2 birds with 1 stone.

I picked up a Revue when Logitech dropped the price and just stream all that over the network. Nexus 7 + streamer box > tablet with HDMI IMHO.

Got the N7 recently, but frankly I'm still using my NC. It has proven itself to be quite rugged whereas the N7 is a bit on the flimsy side. As proof - my 6-year-old has been using a NC for the past 6 months, and it's still good as new after rough treatment. Plus I love how I can just swap the SD out and I have a whole different device. I have 4 or 5 "personalities" on as many cards. That's somehing the N7 cannot do.
I keep waiting for the Memo370T, but I guess it will never show.
Anyway, I might getting the N7 soon.

I have had my N7 for about a month and it is still stock. New record for me! I did unlock it and root it right away. I guess that goes without saying. :silly:
I love my N7 but I wish I had not sold my NC a long time ago. The NC was so great that I thought a bigger tablet would be good so I got an Acer A500 which I didn't like so I bought a Nook Tablet which was also a bad idea. I think I am back on track with the N7, even if it is boring because it just works properly and I can't get inspired to put a ROM on it. I have been thinking about picking up a NC for cheap just to mess with and let the kids use for Netflix.
I'm going for the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition Bundle. Better build quality and features and includes a keyboard and dock for $249. Oh yeah, 2 cameras and a micro-sd slot. Yummmmmm

I am actually on my way after dinner to go to bestbuy and take a look at that galaxy tab2 bundle. But I might be going with an Asus i3 that has dvd burner hdmi and usb 3.0 and 6 hour battery life for only $300

Have you guys read all the various horror stories of N7 hardware issues?
It seems that Asus has quality control problems.
I am definitely holding on to my 2 CM7 Nookies. Just wish they had a microphone for Skype.

I actually did hold off myself. I was going to get a tf300 or a 700 but the build quality was really bad. The wifey went and opened a closed one and the plastic on the keyboard popped apart from itself. The 700 screen was kind messed up. Glass wasn't flush on either of them. Then was reading a bunch of horror stories on the n7. I am going to put things on hold. Was able to pick a i3 Sony vaio for school for only $150 and got a wicked steamer. New Samsung blu-ray player that will steam videos from my server and it plays all my digital movies and seems every type so far from avi, mkv, mov, wmv. Plus I can use my nook as the remote.
I still want a quad core tablet though. They are super smooth. Just want one that is going to have a great material build quality.

We need a nook quad core. Would love it with a tetra 3 though.

I've long since stopped using my nook (tho im still excited for cm10), I'm saving up and going for the tf700, it has a much better build quality and experience than the student tab, plus tegra 3 and micro hdmi!

Wouldn't be surprised if the Tablet #3 with its rumored "revolutionary display" is 1280x800 quad core ... I don't think they'd stick with a dual core if they up the display resolution, since that would make the T#3 perform slower than the current generation. And that would differentiate it with the existing NT8G and NT16G, after they phase out the Nook Color and the current generation of Nook Tablets take up the $150-$170 price point underneath the new device.
OTOH, depending on what is different about the "revolutionary new display", it might be 1024x600 to keep the cost down while the new technology ramps up production.
