[Script][CWM] SD Card reading speed fix - Vibrant Android Development

This is a just a link to brainmaster's thread about this issue. I searched the Vibrant forum and didn't find it anywhere, but it REALLY makes a difference!
Click here to see the original post and download the files you need to flash.
See second post for screen shots of my experience.
This makes my gallery load so much faster it's ridiculous!
Stock I got 11MB/s read speeds, bumping up to the 2048kB gave me 20MB/s, and 3072kB pushed that even further to 29MB/s read speeds.
I am using a 16GB Kingston Class 4 that I picked up from Newegg a couple months ago. Write speeds aren't affected, the difference, I noticed, was whether or not my processor was settled before I started the test. It wasn't on the last two runs, so they have slower writes.

Initial, stock cache:

This was 2048:
And finally 3072:
Sent from my rough sketch of a Vibrant on a brick.

I noticed the SD Card speed fix also and ran some tests. This is from my internal SD Card (using my external in my Nook color).
write read
128k Stock
6.6 14.8
512k
6.7 18.7
1024k
8.2 22.9
2048
8.5 36.4
4096k
7.6 32.2
I ran SD Tools five times each, threw out high and low, averaged the other three.
It looks like 2048k is best on the internal SD.

Nice. What SD card are you using, and did you notice any issues with 4084MB? I was going to try it, but 3072 is so much faster, I didn't bother.
Looks like you're running a class 6 or 8 by your write speeds.
edit: I'm confused, is it kB, or MB? I can't remember and gotta get back to work. I'll sort out my posts as soon as I get a chance.

This is most excellent.

This is on the internal SD. I don't have an external installed at the moment.
Edit: What's sick is my Nook Color running CM7 on external SD (Sandisk 8GB Class 4) gets 4.2MBs writes BUT 82.4MBs reads. wish Vibrant could do that!!

I think we need to note which SD is being tested, internal or external. On my Vibrant, the only card that SD Tools "sees" is the internal - although I do have the external installed and it is accessible. There appears to be no way to select which card is being tested.
Also, there is an app in the Market (paid) called "SD Speed Boost" which lets you change the cache size immediately using a slider between 128 - 4096 and applies the change immediately without a CWM flash (seems to also have a Set at Boot option, but I have not tried that yet). This makes it a LOT easier to test different settings.

I'm using a Transcend Class 6:
4096 hack. I believe it only tests the internal.

What ROM, and/or Kernel are you using? Maybe that's the difference? Nice score, btw!

I've also noticed that my quadrant has gone from an average of about 1950 to now 2050 since flashing this. Anyone know if this hack/mod actually has an affect on Quadrant scores? My Database Reads seem to go much faster now, but it could be a placebo effect

I flashed all no change and it only checks my internal sd. I checked the folder etc/initd and the flash did take. Don't understand if there's a criteria for kernel or ext4 enabled for this to work

Same here using overstocks kernel. No change. Tried it on my HD2 and wow what a difference.

I'm using Trigger 2.8.2 and OverStock 2.2, so 2.2 ROMs can see an improvement, but maybe 2.2.1 ROMs just see more significant gains?

I just installed the same kernel today and my NC is way faster. I don't know where to look for the quadrant info, but my pdf's are being rendered instantaneously. I was planning on returning my NC because pdf reading was a pain, but it works perfect now...
Yeah but try it on a real benchmark like smartbench and I bet it starts looking more realistic.

If he is running Froyo, no. Froyo easily sees a 300-500 point boost over eclair, because of the improved JIT compilier that is in Froyo.

Anyways, gTablet with most custom fw gets c. 2400-2500 but can hit 3200+ with some additional mods... still just a synthetic benchmark though...

Sorry about the URL. Using this picture elsewhere. Ever since getting out of the military and the soon to be ex wife turning off my Sprint phone, I've been flashing a lot of Android devices.
I was about to post a pic, but because I don't have enough posts to link outside, so I can't....
I got 2013 yesterday when I tried to take a screen cap.
It doesn't always get that high. Just every so often it does. Can't explain the differences.
Steps:
Followed original eemc thread in the "general" forum (not one from dev forum).
Got that working correctly.
then mount /boot and copy uImage over old one. reboot and presto!
What's amazing I'm running customized nookie 59 with the 1100 kernel on a class 4 8GB card. I'm getting the same speed as with the standard 59 image installed on the emmc.
edit; The pic is a little fuzzy, 2048 was my best score with setcpu set to performance. In conservative I seem to be around the 2020 ball park.
Beats the hell out of me. I would have never of thought it if I had not seen it with my own eyes.
I included the lock screen picture to prove it was the customized froyo, I don't think there is an img file of it that can be installed...yet.

yes, quadrant scores database r/w pretty heavily and stock galaxy s and tabs are pretty bad there.
they're getting scores around 2900 on the archos gen 8's with ext4. it's with a oc to 1280 also. the biggest boost is b/c of the db r/w. at stock (1ghz) i think they were scoring 2400.
I thought I read that the Nook Color kernels still don't have the drivers for the graffics chip. If the graffics get sorted out we should another big jump.
For being an ereader, this thing is turning out to be the little engine that could. I wonder if the team that developed the NC had a tablet in mind or was it that TI had a tablet project that fell apart and they were just trying to salvage it. Either way its a surprising device.
just got my nook color and deciding on rooting it then OCing it ..
but undecided on eclair or froyo pathways..
the stock kernel eclair has gpu drivers and the froyo kernel does not right ?

BottleNeck SDHC Class

I have a Class 2 right now. I know, "groan".
But i want to get a HIGHER class.
At what class number on the G1 will I hit the bottleneck of the hardware?
What I'm asking is, is 6 the highest I can go and if I go to 8 it still performs like a 6 due to the slow reader in the phone?
Or can I go up to 8 class, 10 class, etc.
Also, I need someone to confirm that a high-class SDHC (like 8 or 10) even works on this phone, 8 or 16gb kind of thing.
Thanks for your input.
I want to get some o' dem swapz in here.
jcarrz1
I used to think grabbing a higher class card would be better too, i've actually bought a class 6 4gb and a class 4 8gb card, truth is it really don't matter what class you have..
Check this thread it made me see the truth.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010807
I haven't really looked at class in detail
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#Speed_Class_Rating
I'm filling in blanks here
it seems that a card will report it's class to the reader and it is then upto the application to decide if it meets it's requirements.
without pulling apart my G1 I have not been able to determine what the controller is to see find it's specs to see if there is a limit to what it can deal with in terms of through put.
I would like to think that the bottle neck is the card, and that a higher class card would be faster
a simple way of looking at it is that even if the G1 doesn't support 10MB/s
a card which does support 10MB/s is more likely to sustain 6MB/s better than a class 6
Sorry I can't provide a real answer here
I would look at the relative cost of class 6/10
if they are not disproportionate then I would go class 10
but if class 10 is 2 or 3 times the price, I would go class 6 (unless I had cash to throw away)
dmesg
Qualcomm MSM SDCC
Thanks for your input, both of you.
Is that script to increase performance that you linked to beneficial in-rom, or just in recovery?
Does that mean that upgrading the class 2 I already have is pointless??
could someone please run a test with the app called "SD Tools" in the market (someone with class 6)
tell me what rom and what speeds you get.
I get 4.3 mb/s write and 18.5 mb/s read. That's with a class 2 8gb on cos-ds WITHOUT SWAP running. <-- idk if that makes a difference.
I think I have a Kingston class 4 (possibly 6, i'm not sure) and my max was around 5.x mb write and 19.x mb read with SD Tools. That was with 2048kb sd cache.
that's not too much better than mine, the stat i posted above was 128, i got about the same as you with 2048.
It seems like you have to make the jump to class 10 in order to get decent speeds on an android phone.
if you take out the sd card and look at it, it will say the class inside a circle directly on the card.

run a few times and it will average out
on a few runs I get (approx)
write 6.5
read 18.5
this is a class 6
so
some class hedge bets and they are classX+
regardless of class read is the same
so for swap class matters, but you may get lucky
for apps2sd , it probably doesn't make much difference
BUT this is just one benchmark program, it could be flawed
maybe a simple script with time would be better, but then you have the memory caching etc to consider
still it is interesting so far, certainly the writes seem to fit(ish)

could be a hw limit
OR your card was just a re-badged china thing
try without swap running, and the app on internal
that could be getting in the way
the bm app writes to /mnt/sdcard/
Class 6 microSD 8gb, unknown producer (china )
Write speed = 6.5 MB/s
Read speed = 15.2 MB/s
I don't use no modified cache, no swap.
Using 2048kb cache:
Write speed = 6.3 MB/s
Read speed = 18.3 MB/s
Thanks for the cache trick

How fast can ACE read an SD?

Who can really answer this one? What is the maximum speed ACE can read data from an SD?
For example a reading speed for a class10 SD can reach 20MB/sec. So can ACE really cope with that?
I am asking this cause I also have a class4 with maximum read speed at 13MB/sec.
So, is there a limit at how fast ACE can read data from an SD? It hasn't got a very powerful processor so is there really a need for a class10?

don't worry. the bus speeds between the RAM module (most likely a LPDDR1 RAM) and the CPU is much much faster than that (at least 200MB/s). The bus connecting the SD card reader and the CPU also have a good bandwidth and therefore you can be sure that whatever Class rating of your SD card is, it won't go to waste.
As a side point, do take note that Class rating of different brands are not the same in real speeds. E.g. Sandisk Class 2 is faster than Kingston Class 2.

Now go to this link to test the read/write speeds of your card.H2test2 1.4.
Just take note that this app is written by a German and so take some time to slowly navigate it. Also how this thing works is that it auto generates a file and send it back and forth from your computer and the sd card. Which means that ideally you should clear your whole card so that the utility can work. However the utility can work with whatever free space your sd card has currently. Meaning only the read/write speeds of the "empty" space gets tested, not the entire card if you get what i mean.

The Awesomeness of Swap. (700MB+ ram)

Mods, please move this thread to General or wherever you think it should belong. It started off as a question that I found the answer to myself after further looking, but now it seems like it'd be helpful for future reference for anyone.
I found this guide here and followed it step by step and I now have 700+MB ram xD. Performance has been increased drastically. I'm using a Micro SD 8GB Class 4.

Yes funeral, even if sd isn't partitioned, the swap file writes to the sd card, which has a limited number of writes. Swappiness at 100 takes a big toll on sd card life

Nah, set the swappiness lower. I'm gonna take it off though. I'll put it back on when I get my 8GB Class 10 and reinstall A2SD. Don't really have the need for swap at the moment since I don't have any heavy apps installed. Just wanted to see how it worked out. Works amazingly well.
Thanks for the tip, without the swap partition we can't keep on background more than 4 apps maybe, now I can keep 10+, I tested and it's great!

Haha. Glad I'm not the only one it's worked for. But you actually made a partition? The swap file is more convenient. You can change size at will and you don't have to touch your SD and it works exactly like a partition.
How big did you make yours?

Oh, sorry, I thought one thing and wrote another, I'm using a 256MB swap file, not partition. Good enough for me.

Oh ok. Yeah, that's good. I'm about to shrink mine. 500 is a space hog for no reason xD.
Highest swap usage I got was like 69MB.
EDIT: I just realized. With this, we can finally use ICS/JB. The lack of ram made it completely slow and unbearable. I'll start using it again once all the bugs are sorted out

Did you even read the first post OR the link provided? YOU DON'T NEED A SWAP PARTITION.

Galaxy Note 4 microSD Card Thread

Hi,
Speed tests and performance.
Which works, which doesn't.
Tools.
Recommendations.
...
I assume Note4 will handle any SD card we will throw at it. But I bet there better ones and worse ones.

I have samsung sd evo 64gb. Works really well. Fast and no errors yet. My past sandisk on my note 2 gave me errors and loss data

What sd cards are recommended? Class 10 and above?
Jist wondering if the phone would utilize super high speed cards or Class10 is more than enough?

Well I guess it depends on SD card. I only heard positive reviews of Sandisk flash memory.

It really depends on what model you buy for your needs all manufacturers make slow and fast ones. I agree that Sandisk is overpriced on their MSRP but if you shop around, look for deals & price match you will get high quality for a fair price.
I just picked up a 64GB Sandisk Extreme Plus yesterday price matched down to $66.99 CAD, it has up to 80MB/s read and 50MB/s write capabilities and on my Note 4 and it did this:

Also can write, transfer, copy and paste to sd card using the stock file manager of the note 4. I've unmounted and mounted with great results. No broken icon image.
What cards are supported?
I assume all?
microSD
microSDHC
microSDXC
And what about speed classes? Both: Class 10 and UHS-1?
The question is: will all of them work and if yes then what max read write speed can Note 4 utilize?
Samsung 32gb evo and all is well.

All of them will work.
Maximum speed is utterly dependant on the card. I'm not sure what the theoretical maximum speed the phone could handle, but I'm sure that the card itself will be the limiting factor, not the phone.

Got the same thing. Working with no problems so far. As for speeds, I've never paid too much attention to the speeds of sd cards, so I couldn't give any specifics.
I've purchased the Samsung 64gb Pro card from Amazon and looking forward to using it.
It's supposedly one of the fastest.

Do you record your 4K videos to SD card?
Could you run any SD benchmark with your EVO?
I read some reviews on the net and seems that EVO should be more than enough for normal Note 4 operation (recording videos, watching huge fullhd movies from mkv files).
SanDisk extreme 128 Gb SDXC
READ 72 MB/ SEC.
WRITE 50 MB/SEC
Recording 4K videos flawlessly.

A1 SD bench
Would anybody mind to test 32 or 64GB EVO card?
1) Perform a 4K video recording to your SD card.
2) Perform a speed test with any of the test app inside your phone.
Thanks!!
I really have some doubts because this site http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-microsd-card/ says that for 4K recording something faster is needed than EVO.
But on the other hand: 4K recording requires only 6MB/s of sequential writing and EVO can handle up to 19MB/s (at lease every review claims that).
Thanks!!!
