Phiremod 5.1 dead battery - Nook Color General

My battery died and now I can't get it to turn on. It'd been in the charger for days now.

I would try a bootable sd first so you can see if anything is actually happening. Other than that, not much more I can think of. sorry =(

What color is the charge light on the cable while it's plugged in? Was it yellow and now green, always yellow, or always green?
I would first try putting in a bootable CWM SD-card, just to check and see if it's a problem with the /boot partition and not the battery. The nook can look like it's not turning on, when infact it is finding itself unable to boot the eMMC.
Worst case scenario: you need to do a warranty return to b&n and hope they either just give you a new one, no questions asked, or replace your battery and not care that it's rooted/flashed.
Worst case scenario 2: You have to replace the battery yourself, which in all honesty doesn't look all that bad to the technologicaly inclined. The hard part will be finding a good substitute battery with all the right dimentions/connections.

Looks light some light at the end of the tunnel. Hooked it up to a laptop and was able too keep the nook turned off while it was hooked up so to started charging! All is good now

Official Charger Broken - Bring Dead Nook Back to Life?

Hey guys, I got an email on my nook the other day, and when I picked it up, I didn't realize I still had it plugged into the charger, so I accidentally yanked it and broke the B&N micro SD cable.
I'm running phiremod, so normally this isn't a problem since I can slow-charge from my PC or car adapter.
The only problem is, charging like this only works once you've loaded the CM kernel. If you try to charge from a dead battery, you can't do that!
Right now, my nook color is dead. I can plug it in and I get the "not enough power to turn on, please wait 15 minutes and try again" message.
My question is, is there any way to charge this sucker (from death) without shelling out another $25 for the charger (and all I need is the cable, but they are almost just as much).
I have it plugged into my PC currently, and it has been plugged in for about an hour, but it still won't power on. If I leave it plugged into the B&N charger with a regular microUSB cable (even all night) it won't charge a drop.
Any suggestions?

FWIW, my nook DID turn on after about an hour - an hour and a half of charging with 11% battery and continues to charge via the PC with a regular microUSB cable. It takes a while, but it will charge
Its good that it started working again. I know some things need to use an official charger to come from the dead. If you wanted to see if you could make it charge faster, (both from dead and regularly) you could try a different USB to wall adapter with higher wattage/amperage. Think iPad, XOOM, or Atrix (all high power-draw devices) charger...

Higher amperage will help...but the magic is in those extra long connectors on the stock cable..to fast charge you will prolly need to get a new one.
Just a friendly PSA: lithium ion batteries should not be deep discharged.
I'm going to need a new cable pretty soon. The end that plugs into the Nook has been cracking and falling apart. I'm guessing I'd have to get it direct from B&N?

Just wanted to add: I've been able to bypass the low battery screen. Pop in a bootable Clockwork SD, then plug into the power source. If there's enough power you'll get into recovery. Swap back to your usual SD, and select the reboot option from inside recovery. It'll boot straight into the OS, bypassing the low battery warning.

Call B&N tech support and tell them that you have a bad USB cable. I did, and they sent me a new charger+cable within a week, gratis. YMMV.
i got one at best buy $14.95 OEM
The stock B&N charger is 2 amps (or 2000 milliamps) so any charger with less than that will take longer to charge. USB only supplies .5 amps so takes a lot longer to charge.
The ebay link above is a 1 amp charger.

So I took the cable in and showed it to them. They took that one and handed me a new cable. 'tis my suspicion that it's a fairly common occurrence with the sample units.

Mine was doing the same thing. Chunks were falling off the end that plugs into the Nook. I took it into my local store and they simply handed me a new one. Claimed it was the first time they'd seen one like that...

I had a really great experience with brick and mortar bn staff. One guy cracked open a new charger and cord and just said to stop by if evertth wasn't totally fixed. I left and now I even have an extra charger!

I did the same thing and they sent for free no questions asked.
Bought my nook used off craigslist. Called in and got a replacement cable no problem.

ive been struggling with this for a few days since this whole battery issues have been going around with the late CM 82 nightlys... well. i wanted to make sure that my nook wasnt toast. (i have 3 and 3 different chargers and cables all OEM all new) so just last night right before the "fix" was merged into nightly 91/93.... ill be damned if i didnt do exactly what you said and managed to suck enuff juice out to boot off SD into recovery... however... i thought problem was solved and i let it sit in recovery (plugged into wall) but had i known what i known now... it WONT charge without the CM kernel installed. Now i think i managed to "brick" an unbrickable device. does this make any sense? im not good with words i guess.. but anyway... there isnt enough juice to even get to the "connect charger screen" hell... i bet most people dont know theres actually ANOTHER "connect your damn charge dummy!!!" screen that comes up after the one that says try again in 15 minutes lol. so ya... been sitting on each of my chargers for at least an hour each hoping to get some juice out ... and its a no go. o well.. i got 2 others... but dammit i had that one JUST the way i wanted it. idk why i even went to .32 kernel... it was a nightmare from first boot. (no i did not revert to stock rom first as i hear is what does the trick)

maybe i should post a warning thread to others to MAKE SURE BATTERY DOES NOT DRAIN COMPLETELY OUT BETWEEN WIPING AND FLASHING FIXED rom.... cuz your nook will NOT charge...... side note... does anyone have any suggestions as far as like a higher rated charger that may force a charge or soemthing? im no electrical engineer so if thats sounds dumb... it prob is. lol
Can you damage a device using higher amperage chargers than supplied with the device (i.e. using nook charger at 2 amps to charge cell phone supplied with 0.7 amp charger)?

The tip of the Nook charger won't fit into a standard micro-USB port.
But if you plug a standard micro-USB cable into the Nook wall charger piece, I believe the USB power protocol will automatically modulate down to the highest the device can accept.

Dead Bionic...Not thrilled to be the first..

Rooted/Nandroid with Bootstrapped Recovery..
I was in the car today,device charged about 40%, noticed the Bionic (for the first time) spontaneously booted. Got the boot screen icon, then black.
Went home, pulled the battery, put in the dock, nothing. Battery back in, nothing.
I think I've eliminated the battery as the cause.
Called Verizon, level 2 tech, offered to send a replacement; I opted to go the the brick and mortar store in the AM so as not to wait for 2 days.
Three questions:
Any chance that this is software related? Rooting app or Bootstrap app related? I think not, as in the dock without a battery it should at least start to light up, no?
If I'm correct, am I in jeopardy of voiding my warranty as the phone's rooted? (Not that they could tell).. ?
Anything else to try b4 swapping the phone?

No, MOST* smart phones cannot run on AC power alone. They require some charge on the battery in order to boot.
*added the emphasis before someone comes running in because their OG Droid/Nexus One/RAZR/POS flip phone/whatever could run off AC power alone.

Rooting your device may void your warranty. Most of the time if it's a physical problem and not related to software, the warranty will still be honored. However, it'll probably be an uphill fight.

I'd try to get ahold of another battery. I'm willing to bet that yours is defective.
I thought that the Bionic would light up in the dock with the battery removed?

Why would it?
The dock is just an AC charger with a stand.
Try fastboot. Rsd lite. Fxz file

With my Droid X and a dead battery the phone would have to sit about 5 minutes and charge before it would come on at all. Wall charger, not USB via computer.

its true that the bionic will have to charge for at least a couple minuets to turn back on. i have run mine totally dead and it will not power up untill it has charged for at least three to five plus minuets. although it will light up about three seconds after the charger is pluged in and even show the battery pic and charging. first thing you need to do is with battery back in the phone and a regular charging cable pluged in the phone other end, usb, pluged into your computer run adb or what ever you use and find out if it showes any devices at all being connected. you should be able to see this in the rds also. run rds app, then plug in phone using a rear usb port

yep, it's true.
I ran my bionic's battery dry the first day I had it. I was trippin out thinking it was broken or something.
After about 5-10 min of charging, I noticed it had a charging Icon.
I realized that I was upset over nothing.
I put it in the wall charger for the 10th time and noticed after about 10 minutes that it lit up with the boot screen, then the battery icon, which showed 0 percent... then it died. So it does look to be the battery. That's good news, I guess. Should I try to get a replacement from VZW, or spare the cross-exam about rooting and fork out the cash for a new battery?
If you want to spare yourself of the cross exam about root, get a new extended battery. Or if you firmly believe that the battery was defective to begin with, then stand your ground and ask that you be given a new one.
You should be fine taking it in. I would do what has been stated and just get a new battery because if it isn't that then it is a hardware issue and that isn't the roots fault anyways.
Also as a kind of FYI thing, Verizon does not do in store warranty replacements anymore(an exception being if you're within the 14day WFG period and the phone is ruled DOA). VZW, in store, does 5 day(overnight if you have insurance) shipping for free. If you want it sooner, you pay the shipping cost. Further, warranty replacement phones do not come with a new battery. They use the old phone's battery.
Where I'm going with this is always start with the battery in situations like this. That can be warrantied in store on the spot. Also make sure you're going to a corporate location.

Like most cell phone batteries, they aren't designed to be completely drained.
I recommend charging it full, waiting tell it gets to about 10%, then charge it fully one more time.
After that charge, your battery should last you all day.
No need to waste money on an extend battery.

Don't worry, you're not the first to have a dead phone. I had to go get a new one after three days.
Couldn't get booted past Motorola splash through any method, and an unlocked bootloader may have helped. But, in the past, and Verizon was happy to hand over a new one.
Wish I had more useful information, but I don't. So, good luck on getting your beast tamed.

Update...
Went to the VZW store at 9... tech swapped out the battery for a new one. NO GOOD. Nothing.
Probably a good thing, as this way they couldn't void the warranty when they discovered it was rooted
Replaced the phone (17 days after purchase; had to get the mgr to approve a swap)..
Restoring apps as we speak..
Makes one wonder what's up with Motorola's QC dept.

Hi guys.. tonight I was WiFi tethering my revo to my tablet while it was charging in my car. After 20 minutes, my phone rebooted. It was hot. REALLY hot!
After the reboot, my battery said that it was completely empty (it was 76% full when it rebooted) and shut down. Now it wont even charge when its plugged in, nor will it power up at least to do a reset.
I've tried pulling the battery, I've tried pulling the 4g sim card and powering it up that way, I've tried plugging it in without the battery and powering it up that way. Bottom line is that when you plug it in, it gets no juice now. Have any of you experienced this?
Is my revo officially dead? I'm on a stock rooted ZV7 vanilla build.
If this is a lost cause, I'm thinking that ill be getting the Nexus. Love this community! Sad i cant be a part of it by applying all the goodness that has come from this collective! Thank you for all that you have done to make the revo as great a tool as it was.

Happened to me, your phone is fine but the battery isn't. Check the white temperature indicator on the battery, if its red then your battery is fried. Temp indicator is by the terminals on the battery. Its supposed to be white with a red criss cross pattern on it. If yours is all red or pink then its done for.

It may have been...but the phone was affected. Got a new battery, plugged it into the wall charger, and the new battery was fried in 20 minutes.
I posted a separate thread with this question...but is it possible that an app can cause the phone to do this? My first instinct is to say no...but I find myself questioning that.

I don't think any app could possibly do that to a battery. Have you tried looking at the terminals on the phone to see if they're burnt up or anything? The first time it happened it was plugged in to a car charger, then the second time a wall plugin, right?

Yea, basically... In a nutshell, Verizon overnighted me a new Revo - Got it yesterday and I'm in the process of Rooting it again.. (thank god it came loaded with ZV7, but I would have just used the TOT file I guess)
Upon inspecting the old phone, I saw no evidence of scorching or burns.. The phone just got REEALY HOT.... The tech presumed that because of the heat and circumstances, it could have burned out the CPU. Hence the reason the phone isn't even turning on now.
In any case, I have a replacement, so I'll be staying with this fine community!
I appreciate all that you guys do here for this phone! Thank you for all the assistance!

I'm pretty sure that's for water damage.. Or is it for the battery in general or just does both?
I've had expedience with phone stores and when you bring a phone in they pop the back off and check the little thing on both the one on the battery and phone and if either one is solid they say its water damaged and deny you anything.

Same thing just happened to my phone a couple of days ago.
Battery indicator strip as well as the indicator on the phone are both still white with red X's.
My battery was at 8%, so I plugged it into the charger in my car - decided a couple of minutes later to put some music on, and the phone just shut itself off, never to return again ;_;
Easily could have been an overheating issue, as this phone gets hot VERY easily when doing ANYTHING while it is charging.
Are you using a case for your phone? I've got a body glove for mine and it doesn't overheat.

[Q] Bought a used Hero and have a question

So I bought a used Hero off eBay and I have a real quick question. It didn't have a battery so I'm waiting for that to get here so till then I can't tell if it works. The condition of the phone is great except for the charging port. The port is missing the black piece of plastic that separates the charging pins but. When I plug it in using the charger from my revolution nothing happens. Obviously it's not gonna charge with out a battery but I'm curious if there should be some sort of led indicator that lights up when its plugged in even when there is no battery that i could look to see if the port is still good to charge. Thanks for any help with this.
I just tested my old Heroc. Nothing happens at all when you plug it in without a battery. When there is a battery, though, an LED near the earpiece will be either a solid orange or green.

Thanks for the reply the one i got has a bad charging port I've found out so i ordered an external charger.
If you ordered an external charger I would suggest possibly getting another battery or two. They are cheap and easy enough to swap out when needed. I ran my HTC apache like this for two years and it worked great even with a bum charging port. Good luck to you with your new hero.

[Q] Is my Xperia Z dead?

I know there's many threads on the sleep of death and red led of death etc but just wanted to confirm what has happened to mine. The phone started getting very hot with rapid battery level drops. Also, if I turned it off and back on, the battery level would go from like 80% to 20%. The next day, I tried to turn it on and nothing hapened. I've tried charging it for a good 16 hours, tried volume up, volume down, Sony repair, flash mode with flashtool, nothing. The led lights solid red when plugged in and goes straight out when unplugged. Is there anything else I can try or is it well and truly bricked? The phone is unlocked and was running cyanogen mod 10.2 for a couple of months without any trouble....
Based on the symptoms you have provided, it seems to a hardware issue,
I suspect primary the Battery is draining out the juice and taking hours to charge.
secondly it could be a Motherboard failure.
If you goto sony service center and if they identify the problem with the motherboard then they will charge you 50% of the value of the phone and you will get a replacement handset (same color) .
The problem I have is I've already sent my phone to Sony under warranty for a different fault but had it returned unrepaired due to the fact there was evidence I had rooted the phone, therefore my warranty will now be invalidated. Since then I've also unlocked the bootloader so I don't expect any assistance from Sony.
Is there anything I can do myself - would replacing the battery help? How easy is this? I have no problem removing the back panel (I did it before when Sony refused to repair it).

One solution can be that you clean with something the micro usb slot, but with something dry and the charger and usb cabel too
Can anyone confirm if changing the battery is likely to sort my problem as I don't see what other option I have?

Reboot your phone.
If it is still not work, replace the battery.
If it is still not work, then it is the motherboard problem. It hard to repair by yourself.
Try a charging dock, the phone boots the kernel to allow the phone to charge via USB if battery is to low this won't happen, with a dock it is direct tappings to the battery to allow it to charge

Turns out the battery was the problem, I connected a new battery (with the old one still in position) and it fired up first time. However, the old battery was stuck in really well and took some force to remove - when I fitted the new one, the phone turns on but the screen has loads of thin lines in both directions and is totally unreadable. I thought maybe I'd damaged something when removing the old battery, but I can't see any damage the ribbon cables or anything else. Anything I can check or is the screen knackered now? I've pretty much had it with this phone now!

I got that wrong, it wasn't the battery, the new one is now doing the same as the old one. I'll buy a new motherboard and hope that sorts both the power fault and screen fault.
