I've had my SGS since September of 2010. When tethering using mobile AP I get frequent "disconnects" on any PC/Laptop I use where for a time I'm unable to do anything over HTTP or HTTPS, but other protocols seem fine. The real kicker is that the connection doesn't actually drop.
Let's say I have two PCs connected one is just a regular wifi tether surfing the net, checking email, etc. The other PC has a VPN tunnel which handles all internet traffic through it. The non-VPN PC will start having problems with websites ("Page cannot be displayed", "Connection refused", etc.) while the other (through the VPN tunnel) can keep going 100%.
I can be surfing along, lose connection, start up my VPN tunnel back to my office (even when I have no "web" access), and then everything will work 100% for hours on end. I've kept this VPN tunnel connected for the whole trip from Swift Current to Saskatoon and never had a drop except in one or two low spots. However, without the VPN tunnel I would have web issues every 15 - 20 minutes and they last for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
I called Sasktel twice on this now and the first time they admitted to having problems with some websites (mls.ca, flikr.com) where portions of the pages don't load correctly. The second time I called in and they denied having (or ever having) any issues.
Anyone else having similar issues? I think Sasktel (not sure about Bell) is playing with HTTP and HTTPS traffic. Whatever they're doing it getting in the way of normal communications..

So far the AT&T Tilt has been kicking some serious ass. However, there has been one glitch that I'm hoping someone might know more about.
Twice now, the internet connection has stopped working through the cellular data connection. Connecting through active sync and wi-fi still works. The last time this happened I called Fido (Calgary, Canada), found out that everything was OK on their end and then tried a bunch of connection settings. Doing what they asked me to do didn't solve the problem. Then, seemingly by magic without doing anything in particular, the connection started working again and I could connect to web pages again through IE.
So it has happened again, and I can't to connect to the internet using IE (or any other application). Here is the status so far:
- tried rebooting the device
- been able to connect via wi-fi and active sync
- Installed Microsoft's Network Analyzer application which reports the following: IP address is assigned (cellular connection) and able to ping microsoft's http server (www.microsoft.com ). Note that when I disconnect my data connection the ping to microsoft fails so I believe it is actually reaching the server. There is no MAC address for the cellular network adaptor, but I don't know if this is normal or not. See the attached document which is the log file it generated.
- Tried to connect via Google Maps, Direct push (Exchange), Octro Talk. All of the applications give the same message that the page or service can't be found. It is odd that the Network Analyzer seems to be the only application that can talk to the outside world.
- Also re-ran the diable proxy cab for the Tilt
I didn't play with any of the connection settings prior to this happening so it's hard to tell what is causing the problem.

Flash your ROM
If you are having the same trouble, I fixed my problem by flashing to an HTC ROM. Screen layout switching is faster now, my network connection is working and the system seems generaly faster. I'm using Dutty's Hybrid test final rom V4. If there is stuff about your tilt that you don't like, and you aren't actually using AT&T as your carier, then I would just ditch their ROM.

This is a 2-part dilemma...
1.) is there a way to use my Wi-fi and data plan as a gateway for internet access with the computers in my home? I want to be able to turn on the Wi-fi, and the phone will become an access point and its internet connection comes from my data plan... I guess this can be done with a T-mobile G1.
2.) the way I do it now is that I hook it up via USB to a computer, and that works pretty well. Problem is, if I disconnect it via software function on the phone or just yank the USB plug out, I have to re-boot my phone before the internet sharing will work again. This gets annoying. Anyone else experience this and/or know if there's a fix?
Or am I just dumb and want everything on a silver platter?
are these computers connect in a network. I am sure it can easily be done by internet connection sharing just have all the computers connect to your pc for a connection.
I thought about doing that--basically an internet share to an internet share. That WOULD work, but I was hoping for something a bit simpler. i am not a hardcore computer user like I was back in the day where I had to have at least 3 computers running 24/7 in order to cope with life. LOL. I was hoping for a setup where I can just walk in the door from a crappy day at work, plug my phone into the charger where it gets its best signal, and just leave it there and the rest will take care of itself. I am close to being able to do that with my Xlink bluetooth cellular gateway. Once I am home, there's no reason why I have to carry my phone around the house, as my hard-wired phones in the house ring through my cellular and I can make calls from them
The other option is to quit being a cheap turd and get a $30/mo internet connection for my computers, which is faster than the EDGE service I get here at home. But I live alone and don't download big stuff anymore or play multiplayer games, etc
I think the concept in question is one that has been batted around here for some time: Can the Kaiser be used as an access point with an internet connection?
As far as anyone's been able to tell, no. The phone's wifi chip(or part of a chip that does wifi) would need to support AP mode (access point mode) where in it receives and routes multiple wifi connections' data between each other and the GPRS hardware. As far as anyone's been able to tell, the wifi capabilities in the phone are limited to single-connection only, so allowing multiple devices to connect (or even 1, unless the desired device can get internet via adhoc or bluetooth) is not possible.
You can use the WiFi connection sharing. What it does is take your EDGE or 3G connection and set your phone up as an "access point". I put that in parenthesis because it creates an "ad-hoc" network that only certain devices can detect and connect to. Ad-Hoc is a device to device network, where the normal is infrastructure mode. Also being the device it is, I'm not sure if it's going to be an intelligent network device, IE.. iTunes music sharing between local connected clients. But you can most certainly share your connection with your laptops or desktops if they have WiFi. I'll see if I can find the cab for you and post it here.

Cool. I will look into that! I pretty much only have one computer running at a time these days, and the EDGE connection isn't all that fast to be sharing it among multiple computers anyway.

$ 30.00 for your phone data connection + $ 45.00 for your home cable/DSL connection = $75.00 per month, as opposed to just $30.00 for both.
To some people $ 45 dollars a month is a lot of money to save no matter how slow the connection is.
I am no expert but I found this software here a while ago and really liked it. There is an older version that is legally free but the new one is pay, try the trial.

Or you're like me and cant get anything but satellite internet where I live, which is way more expensive. Yet I get 3G just fine =)

I like WMWifiRouter pretty well. It drains my battery like crazy, but when I have my phone plugged in, it's okay. Without being plugged in, my battery loses about 20% over ten minutes. Also, the free version doesn't really come with any admin features. The router is public and there's no way to see who's connected. Other than that, it's great!
I have been having issues where i am connected to the wifi but the device stops passing any traffic. I have fing installed and i can't ping any other devices on my network. I know its just my phone because i have my work phone and tablet connected to the wifi and they still work fine browsing webpages, watching movies etc while the droid turbo can no longer communicate with the local lan or out to the internet. If i switch the wifi off then on again it will reconnect and then work normally. I can then ping devices on the local lan and access pages on the internet. This has happened a number of times now since i got the device.
Edit: I just updated the phone and still get the issue. I have a cisco WAP at home, we have cisco WAP's at work which i will test tomorrow. If this thing still has issues i am just going to swap it out for a Note 4.

Yeah this phone does not seem to like my router for some reason. Keep in mind I'm not a networking expert, but I've tried every combination of options and settings every which way from Sunday and I just can't get the thing to work. When I do connect the phone to my wifi it kills the the connection on every device in the house. At first I though it was just a wireless thing, but even the downstairs computer which is plugged in directly to the router doesn't work. Then as soon as I disconnect the phone every device works again. I thought maybe there was too many devices, so I disconnected all but the downstairs computer, still had the issue when I connected the Turbo. I've tried just turning off the WPA2 and just having an open system, I've tried connecting the phone using a WPS pin (This one actually worked for a good 5 minutes before crapping out and hasn't worked since). On the advanced options of the phone I tried an automatic IP as opposed to the default DHCP setting (This also worked for a good 5 minutes before not working ever again). I've tried limiting it to just one frequency band. I have tried so many different things and I just cannot make this phone work on my router. And I know it's my router because the phone works fine at work.

yup within ten minutes of getting home, the device no longer passes traffic. My work S5 still works fine at home and so does my samsung tablet. The device worked on wifi all day at work on our enterprise wpa2 network no issues. I tried doing static ip at home, changing to 2.4 ghz, trying new ssid. Not sure what else to do with this thing...

I posted a comment on Motorola's forum where people are discussing their wifi issues... And my work around. I currently beleive its a software issue and can be fixed via update. Also, today I found (it appears) that the longer the phone goes without a reboot, the shorter amount of the it appears to go with out needing the wifi card reset.

My work around fix...
First, over night my wifes phone now behaves just like mine. It now connects to wifi and after sometime passes it no longer passes data (but stays connected). I needed a way to auto disable/enable the card... I installed Tasker. I have it set to check every 15 minutes, if the phone is connected to WiFi, to disable then enable the WiFi card. I use WifiMatic to enable the wifi card when the phone is connected to the cellular tower that is near my house. (Doing this by GPS uses more battery power...) Using Tasker with the rule to verify its connected to wifi first helps not enabling wifi if its nit needed and lets WifiMatic enable/disable it as needed.

I have a SGH-I537 with 5.0.1. Lately, I noticed that even though the Wifi Connection is on, pages time out constantly. There are brief moments where the connection is good and can access pages, but most of the time it just doesn't work. I can ping to and from my laptop and phone without any missing packets. It authenticates fine with the AP, but can't access any page, even by IP address. Thinking that maybe the firmware was at fault, I reflashed to OC7, but it is still behaving the same. Is it possible that the WiFi radio is dying?
Long version:
-I am running a media server for my family (as well as NAS/printer/etc sharing) so I need an internet connection and WiFi on the server at all times.
-I live in an area where the internet is.... unreliable... going out for 15+ minutes on a near-monthly basis, and for shorter periods every few days.
-When I am in one of these long outages (and since nobody can use the internet they all want to watch content on the media server, which for some reason requires an internet connection to stream over the local network) I was planning to just USB/BT tether my Note9 to the server until the outage ended...
But...
Every time I tether it, in less than 15 minutes, often less than 5, despite me toggling WiFi to "Off" the phone has decided to turn wifi back on and reconnect to the network with no internet connection, terminating my cellular data session. WiFi tethering is not an option since I need the server to remain on the wifi network to serve media to... cantankerous... retired senior citizens who refuse to learn to download media themselves for offline viewing......
Tl;Dr:
How can I force the Note9 to stay on mobile data and not reconnect to WiFi untill I tell it to? (being a note9 it is, of course, Stock and un-rootable)

That's the one! Also change location settings so that it doesn't use wifi for location tracking, because that will also turn on wifi if it's set to use the chip.
Thank you, I didn't realize that the Note9 actually kept track of where I use Wifi like that - when the wifi works that's actually a great feature to save battery when I'm away from home/work (I'll have to see if there's a program to make a quick-toggle)
