Force close of Apps and other problems Help - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
The problem is this whenever I go to open or use certain apps I get a sharp vibration through the phone (Samsung Galaxy s (i9000)) and an error message (sometimes it flashes up and quickly disappears so i can't read it) however in some cases such as the Advanced task killer app i am able to read it it goes like this "(process.com.rechild.advancedtaskkiller)".
It is not solely associated with advanced task killer, it is present in Angry birds Rio (not even the original), beautiful widgets, Smart Battery Monitor, Weatherbug etc. (not always the same message as above).
I have updated it to 2.2.1 as per the Samsung Kies software but that was around 2 weeks ago, and it was fine until yesterday when I changed the battery (i had ordered another one for a backup and i wished to charge it fully) it was a genuine Samsung battery from a reputable online company (and I have since switched back to the original).
Other problems i have had since then is all my calender notes have been erased, my message & ring-tone have been reset, my email accounts have been erased, my contacts are not visible in the contacts menu (i have to select them through messages).
Any advice would be of great use.

this is very common when changing ROMs, happened to me a million times.
first of all if you have the 3 button combo, go into recovery mode, and then wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and then reboot.
if that doesnt work, you will have to do a full factory reset, but if the phone is use-able at the moment, do a backup with Titanium Backup before you do the reset.
a full factory reset is a MUST when flashing ROMs, this helps unwanted files from the previous ROM coming over to the new ROM,
I know you did this through KIES, but i have never used it, i dont like it, Im not sure whether KIES, is supposed to do a reset when upgrading. but do one anyway

[Q] Big crash today, all contacts, settings, unprovoked.

So this morning when i got up to get to work, i looked at my SGS, checked the gold prices app, stuck it in my pocket, then went to work.
at about 3pm i took out my phone to fiddle with it for a bit, and it was at the initial setup screen, the series of promts you get when you first switch on the phone after unboxing it... i skipped through and found that all my settings were gone, and all my contacts were gone, except for the stock crap that comes with the simcard.. my history was gone, but some of my SMS's had survived.
None of the applications were gone however the menus had been re-arranged, and several of the apps froze immidiately when they were opened; it seems all settings within the applications have been erased as well.
The applications that did not open, i deleted then re-installed from the market, and the fresh downloads seem to work.
I have managed to scrape ~15 contacts from the few sms's that are in the history, but this is well short of the ~400 i have lost. I would be able to get more back if i could sync it with facebook, which isnt working (says "sync is down"). I stupidly dont have anything backed up on my computer, and an old (januaryish) backup of my contacts on my dads computer i couldnt find the file for.. (probably deleted). The reason i didnt do a backup is because i didnt expect this to happen, i dont mod the phone or do any dodgey downloading that would cause such a crash.
I have no definate idea what could have caused this, as the phone was running totally without issue for ages, and had no major setting changes or application installs for weeks before today. I know it happened today, because in the morning i checked the goldprices app, which worked fine, and after the crash that was one of the applications that didnt work. Meaning it happened between 9am and 3pm. During this whole time the phone was in my pocket, it had no impacts, and i was not near any machinery that might emit strong heat/magnetic fields all day. My only suspiction, is that i was given an iphone for the day, which i stuck in the same pocket.. and maybe the added magnetic field / radio signal could have stuffed the SGS up.
This really is a bad thing for me, so if anyone has any ideas on how i could get my contacts back i would definately appreciate it.. I thought about putting in a complaint to samsung but ive known for a while that they dont care about their own customers..
hey bro which rom where u using??
they should automatically sync with google, unless you unchecked the option.
check under settings options in contacts and see if there is a way to restore them, i know there is but its been so long since i have been on a stock samsung rom i cant remember...
Hi mate, i flashed a kernel to it weeks ago and thats about it, thisi s what it says in settings/about phone
firmware version: 2.2
baseband version: i9000DTJP3
kernel version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22
build number: FROYO.DTJP5
cheers
I need to bump this up because this has happened to me AGAIN
This time there was no iphone, the phone coincodentally was sitting in front of me and i watched it reset itself, when it booted up it was in the initial setup screen, after which i got force close errors for facebook and gmail.
It appears this time that my contacts and messages and apps, and data, and settings... did not get lost, however MOST of the applications, including the stock ones and autostart ones, give Force close errors, including the force close errors i get on startup from the stock gmail app and the facebook for android app.
last time i did not remedy this, i scavenged what data i could, and deleted/re-downloaded the applications that didnt work, note; this didnt work for all of them.
I cant however delete the stock gmail app and i would rather treat the source of this issue than its symptoms.
Have already tried: factory reset/data wipe from CWM recovery boot
cache partition wipe
fix permissions
went to attatch it to kies to see if updating the firmware would work, but clicking 'update' i get a strange error in a non-english language, and the update does not perform.
Although now i cant even get it to connect to kies..

[Q] Critical (for me) problem!

I have a GT-I9000 with stock ROM (& moded kernel, but the kernel is not the problem).
Today, my phone turned off while I was working and didn't paid him much attention.
Then I tried to turn it on, I waited some time and decited that it takes too much.
Then I opened it's back panel and removed the battery. after about 4 hours I charged the battery and turned on my phone.
That's where the problems begun!
The phone booted as ususal till it got to the lock screen, but then it vibrated (the app crash vibration), I unlocked and then ALL of my apps crushed one after another, about 50 apps one by one even though I just turned on my device.
In addition, I've been asked by the device for some info, such as my facebook loggin details, and wifi/3G settings.
Every time I try to use a crashed app, it crashes again.
In my notifications bar, the "noteeverything" app tells me that the Datavase is unreadable and GO Louncher keeps crashing time and time again.
Any1 knows what happens and what should I do?
If formatting the flash is the only way, might I save my apps and their data?
Please help me save my PICTURES!!! ><
Thanks in advance
i would suggest trying to uninstall go launcher, sounds like that's where the problem begins
if it doesn't help you might have to flash your phone, also you should try to save your stuff via Kies if it still is recognized by it
good luck mate
I don't know what you have stored on the actual phone, but I'd try everything to pull what you can off, uless you have recent backups... which you should. One thing I've learnt with smartphones is backup backup backup. I lost my calendar through similar circumstance to you, phone froze, i rebooted it and calendar would always crash... had to reset it =(
Worse to worse, you'll probably have to do a factory reset on it. This only resets all your apps, contacts, sms etc etc... basically anything stored on main phone memory. All data on your internal SD card will be safe... this means your photo's.
If you have kept all your data backed up through google (contacts, calendar etc) then you'll have almost no issue. It'll all restore itself after you wipe and setup your account again.
Flash with Odin. Pictures on internal SD are safe.

Thank you very much, I'll do that.
Though if I flash, maybe I should have something better then my current 2.2 version.
Any1 knows what CM7 nightly (if at all) I should install so I will be able to do my basic staff? (phone calls, Wi-Fi, 3G, camera, and the basics).
10x again

[Q] Pictures not saving?

Running on 2.2, rooted. ever since i upgraded to 2.2 i've been having all sorts of problems with my phone. first it was i couldn't download apps from the market(the clear data didn't work at all), so i factory reset, that fixed that.. then 2 days later my wifi wouldn't connect to my home wifi connection anymore so factory reset again.. it's been about a week, now it's sending text to the wrong people and when my girlfriend sends me pictures from her iPod touch (she uses textfree because her phone broke and she can't get a new one yet) but it shows up black (for the pictures) then i found a solution to seeing the picture, saving the attached item, but when i do that it says "copied to SDcard" but when i go into gallery to find it, it's no where on my phone. i found out that sometimes restarting my phone will show it up, but half the time it just shows up at the most random times like after i look for it & restart if it isn't there a few hours later it will be
So anyway to fix this without factory reset?
You need something more than just factory reset. You need to completely reflash your ROM. Use a fresh download because the one you used could have been messed up slightly.

Several problems on a new Galaxy Note N-7000!!

Hello everybody,
I apologize for this post being so big but I had to cover all the details. I just got my new Galaxy Note N-7000(ceramic white) in India through Flipkart.com on 13th Feb. The phone worked fine the first day but since the next morning, I have been encountering a lot of problems. This is my first ever android phone so im pretty new to android and I am really scared if I might have gotten a defective piece. So please guys any help would be really great!
Here are some of my problems -
1. Phone restarted when moving apps from phone to SD card. Happened once.
2. Restart when changing the tabs in stock internet browser. Happened twice. Also the tabs move with a bit of lag. This is surprising with such high specs of the phone.
3. Restart when browsing the gallery. Happened Once.
4. Restart when connecting to usb mode through USB Utilities under settings>wireless and network>USB utilities. Happened Once.
5. Freeze when viewing gallery. Happened once and I had to remove the battery and reinsert and switch the phone back on because even the home button was not responding.
6. Freeze when trying to attend incoming call. Happened only once.
7. Advance task killer shows several apps open even if I never touched those apps. Mostly they are the default Samsung apps but sometimes a few apps I installed.
8. Apps like skype, viber, ect crash often and give a message 'application crashed and gives options to either force close or report'
9. Generally gets very hot even when browsing the internet or the market and burns like hell when gaming. The heating problem has reduced a little ever since I updated the firmware which Kies showed.
Guys, Im not sure if I am just panicking for nothing and if these things are normal but I feel such a costly phone with high specs shouldn't give these many problems. Plus I have installed only decent apps like skype, facebook, viber, astro, asphalt 6, blood and glory, angry birds, omnisketch, box, barcode scanner to name a few and they just fill only up to half the 4th app screen . I haven't installed any custom roms or have rooted my device yet as I am a complete noob. I havent even installed any apk's or apps outside of the android market or Samsung apps. Thanks in advance for any help!
First thing you should perform is Hard Reset.
backup your data then go to setting - privacy n Factory data reset (dont select to format USB storage. so data on SD card will remail as it is.

ok i will try this now and then install the apps back and let you know...but are you sure these problems are not a manufacturing defect or some hardware problem?..Hey btw what is the difference between hard resetting from the privacy settings and hard resetting by pressing the volume up+lock button+menu button?
Doesn't sound hardware related in my opinion. If hard reset doesn't work flashing a new rom will more than likely solve it. I've never had these issues though (other than apps auto starting on boot). Is there not an update available for the firmware?

Now that the topic has come up, Dr. Ketan.. Could you please explain the difference between a normal reset and a hard reset. I tried searching. Couldn't find an accurate answer.

You just check it first without installing extra application then after. If it occurs only after installing some stuff, it is just confliction with app.
Both methos are same, reset with recovery option is useful when you are unable to boot your device normally.

What i know is soft reset is just clear appl n memory from background, say simply rebooting device.
Hard reset will wipe all data except from System ROM, so making device as it was at time of purchase.
I also wanted to add that some apps will run in background. They are software update, samsung hub, samsung account, wifi sharing. etc. Apps like a keyboard or rdio will run in background.
Rooting the device allows you to have greater control and the ability to freeze apps so they can't run in background.

G890A freezing during installs/updates and bootup after - narrowing the problem

Currently have a G890A, AT&T, Android 6.0.1, Baseband: G890AUCS5CPK4
I've spent days of time trying to understand and fix repeated freezes/crashes, and am curious if you think my understanding of the problem is likely accurate and if the next steps make sense. Below are current issues, my previous solution attempts, best guess at the problem, and next steps to solve it. Thanks for taking the time to read this!
Issues:
- Starting at the Android 6.0 update, the phone began freezing intermittently when installing/updating certain apps.
- Freezing was unaffected by subsequent firmware updates
- Freezes happened before I could see which apps were starting to auto-update.
- During a freeze, the phone gets warm and drains the battery quickly. Power+down will reboot the phone, then it usually freezes again.
- After the first freeze, freezes and crashes would then continue on bootup, sometimes over 20+ reboots, usually while drawing "SAMSUNG" letters or soon thereafter
- Eventually whatever was installing/updating/uninstalling seems to take, and the phone finally stops rebooting.
- Disabling auto-updates prevents freezing
- After a factory reset it takes hours of rebooting, getting lucky enough to see the home screen, and for luck to hold long enough to open the play store before a freeze happens
- Freezing does not happen when updating every app. Installing/updating Google Inbox and Khan Academy both caused 20+ reboots/hangs. Trying to uninstall Khan Academy produced another 20+ until the uninstall finally seemed to take. I haven't tried to uninstall or update Inbox.
Current efforts to fix the problem:
- Safe mode: no improvement
- 3 factory resets: no improvement
- 3 factory resets + safe mode: no improvement
- Disabling auto-updates: effective, as long as I never install or update apps
- calling ATT: They said go to a Samsung rep at Best Buy
- talking with Best Buy Samsung rep (closest is an hour drive away): Best Buy says they can re-flash G890AUCS5CPK4, but my concern is that whatever got corrupted in an earlier update won't be fixed by re-flashing that version.
- calling Samsung: Samsung says they'd be happy to look at it if I send it to them a couple weeks. They also state that they'll send it back untouched if I try flashing it myself.
Best Guess About the Problem
Something got corrupted in Play Services during the 6.0 update; something that runs early in bootup and continues any in-progress installation/update processes.
Next Steps
- Determine on this thread whether it makes sense to reflash G890AUCS5CPK4 at Best Buy
- If so, take the phone to Best Buy for a reflash. If not, find a backup phone for a couple weeks and send the GS6 to Samsung
- Prefer not to try flashing it myself since I have no experience and don't want to brick it or remove the chance for Samsung to fix it as a backup plan.
Do the best guess and next steps make sense? I really like the s6 active. I've had it just over a year and want to keep it for a while. It's gone rafting, kayaking and hiking in all kinds of weather, and operated flawlessly in and out of water the entire time. Fantastic phone until this issue.
Thanks again!
Adam
How are you installing your apps? One by one from the play store, all at the same time from the play store, or by some other method (from an archive of some kind), which might be corrupt.

@anneoneamouse, Great question. Thanks for asking. I did a few of them via Samsung's Smart Switch, then uninstalled most of those. I didn't think about the APK's stored by Smart Switch being corrupted somehow. Trying reinstalls from the Play Store now.
And... it's been about 3 hours. A number of previously failing apps worked when installed from the Play Store. I was excited. Then I uninstalled Google Inbox and reinstalled it from the Play store, and the phone froze. Multiple reboots never got it past the loading screen after that. Eventually I did a factory reset. The phone still froze with only factory apps. No non-factory apps installed from any source. Four more factory resets later, no progress. It's probably time to send this critter to Samsung.
Have you tried booting into the recovery menu, and clearing all the cache areas? I'm not sure that a factory reset is equivalent to a complete wipe.
How are you uninstalling Google inbox?

Sorry for the slow reply. Just saw this. I did cache wipes followed by resets, which also log to the screen that they're doing a cache wipe. Uninstalling/reinstalling inbox stopped being an issue because I could never get far enough to install Inbox again from any source. As soon as I logged in with a google account during setup, the factory apps started updating and the hanging/crashing began. Sent it to Samsung.
Appreciate your help!
