Hey Guys,
So this is going to be a sort of running thread through the summer, or if it dies, I may revive it as the decision gets closer. Basically here is the deal. I am a student, finishing my junior year of high school, and I am looking for a computer. I want a laptop that is reasonably portable, but also powerful. I play some games, not super intensive, but I would like to make sure the computer can play source engine games well (TF2, CS:S HL2), and also I was an avid player of the original Guild Wars, and I would like my laptop to be able to run Guild Wars 2. Also, going back to the portability, I'm thinking 13-14 inches, and a decent battery life (four hours plus). I would also like a durable laptop, because I would like to try to make it survive for 4 years or so. Budget isn't too much of an issue, but I would like the best bang for my buck. I was looking at the HP Envy 14 when the Sandy Bridge refresh hits this summer. Is there anything else out now that I should look at, or is anything else coming soon that will fit these requirements. I'm looking to purchase this laptop sometime in the fall of 2011.
Thanks Guys
Get an alienware m14x may or may not be your style though.

Thinkpads are decent. Just don't get anything from Sony or HP.
Hmm the alienware isn't really my style and seems kind of thick to me. And why the HP hate. I know Sony has some high prices.

I have an HP - a DV7-3077CA. It's VERY hot. And by that, I mean the temperature of the creature.
You said you don't really need vast screens, that's a plus in finding a better price with good hardware. So, as I live in another country (and in one with ABUSIVE taxes - I payed about 2.5X what you would pay for the same laptop there), I can't really say an specific option.
But look for things like this:
A Sandy i5 (basic i7 models come with lower clocks than i5. Of course, their TurboBoost is astounding but they don't always work - I have one, I can tell), with 4GB RAM, at least 500GB HDD, and with a dedicated card. Get something from nVidia (brand wars aside, AMD's drivers are still subpar, and laptops NEED stability), probably there are some 4XX or 5XX series cards going out there. Try to get a video card between the 440-450 or 530-550 models. You won't need higher performance than that for quite some time for what you said, but the basic models are TOO basic.
Now, brands: Speculations aside, HP isn't the worst option either, cooling systems aside. AFAIK, Acer usually builds well. Samsung is getting better.
I just wouldn't recommend Dell & Sony (for pricebranding reasons, also at least around here, Dell's support is nothing of what they promise).
Everything here is basically to say that it's actually easier for you to point at a model and think for yourself if it's good for you. It's better for us to support, but what if we really mess up in the choose?
Good thoughts, I'll be back here in awhile with some examples, but while I'm looking, what is the deal with the ASUS laptops. Can you only get them in certain configurations, and is there anyway to read into the names without clicking on each ones to look at the specs.
Epic picture!! I wanna make one like that from my old laptop
Hey guys, here are just a few of the laptops that have caught my attention as I've been looking.
HP Envy 14 (SB Refresh in June)
HP dm4x
Dell XPS 15
Alienware mx14 (How thick is it? I could live with the looks if its not too thick.)
Lenovo, ASUS, and Acer I havn't had time to go through yet, but are there any particular models of those that stick out and compare with the above.
Edit: Started looking at ASUS, NF43JF can be added to the list above.
Buy a laptop that can't play games so you can focus on studying.
I kid I kid.

Id like to thank everyone that helped me root, rom, & nand.
OMFGB, Slayher#27, CWM 3.0.0.8
Get Something made by ASUS. Solid company with great rep. I have a U30Jc with GeForce 310m which will play COD on medium settings. The newer models are even better. http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/
Hmm, seems a little almost 2 powerful for me. I'd like more battery life. Also, im not a huge fan of the brown. But thanks for the suggestion.
I've got a Dell Studio 1558 64x - http://www.dell.com/uk/p/studio-1558/pd
But i wound recommend an XPS 16/16/17 http://www.dell.com/uk/p/studio-1558/pd
or if you have the money a Mac Book ! - but then that depends on what corse your doing...
I would highly suggest not getting anything over 14" for screen size. I have a friend who had a 15" mac book but mainly used an Asus Netbook because it was more portable and better battery life. Ideally get a 13.3" or 14" there the ideal size with a good balance of potability, power and battery.

It doesn't mean too too much. It basically means that Apple is THOUGHT to be more profitable and a smarter investment. Microsoft still nets more in the long run. And don't worry about the dominant OS, that's not even CLOSE.

Market cap is a contruct of the stock market. Apple will not be bigger in:
User base
# of employees
Gross revenues
The market loves Apple, it hates Microsoft. There are numerous reasons, but market cap is not really a number that I feel holds a great deal of water in calculating company size. Just ask Enron - market cap has a funny way of being able to fluctuate quickly...

Mac's price point will ALWAYS mean that they will never, ever take over Windows.
Why in your right mind would you spend $2000+ to get a mac when you could get better hardware for the same or lower price.

I'll definitely be getting one for the hardware (the phone UI throws me). I haven't decided if I'll sell the NC cheap, or re-purpose it for use around the house. It can always be used for use in kitchen as a media stream, living room for remote control, perhaps the car as a GPS/receiver. The NC isn't completely dead :fingers-crossed:

Yeah, with CM9 the Nook Color finally is getting the Tablet treatment it deserves(Not Customised Phone like CM7) but with the Nexus 7 I'm actually considering the selling of my NC that I've used and loved for 2 1/2 years. This is the most torn I've felt in awhile. With the NC only just getting ICS(and still missing certain important things as of now), the Nexus 7 with Jellybean and Quad-Core CPU is flat-out tough to ignore.
My Nook has been my constant companion for a year and a half..had a half dozen different roms starting with autonooter. I even purchased a murse (man purse) to carry it in.... Really going to be hard to put it on a shelf!!!! BUT, this thing looks great and the price for the 16g is what I paid for my Nook!!! And I have a birthday coming in two weeks!!!:silly:
But no SD slot. And phone GUI is standard, even though HD device.

Where did you hear about Phone UI? And how is that necessarily a bad thing? Who knows if it works better or not, we haven't gotten our hands on Jellybean yet. Lack of MicroSD slot I agree is a big Con but let's hold out on whether the UI will be bad. The Phone UI on JB might just work better on a 7" screen then the Tablet UI. On CM9 I do notice how things are Kind of squashed/cramped in Tablet Apps with the NC and it can get annoying.

Answers our UI question. They have changed it so that Tablets(at Least 7inchers) get the Phone UI but made it so it takes advantage of the larger screen. So yes it's the Phone UI, but No it doesn't suck like the Android 2.2 and 2.3 UIs did.

Exciting stuff.
Well I preordered it. I had skipped the kindle/NT (though I do adore the omap4s, I didn't want to reward BN for locking their bootloader)... but dalingrin talked me into this months ago when it was that announced $250 ASUS 7" quad core device, so now that it's finally out I'm getting one.
Also just loaned away my TP-- 10.1" is too big for me, at least with that heavy monster. It was a great deal and a great project, but 7" is right for me.
That said- my NC is my baby and it ain't goin' nowhere.

Hear! Hear! You Certainly have helped make the NC so great.
I would have loved to get a Nexus if it had a sd card slot
Would have bought a Nexus 7 today if it would have had an SD card slot. Oh well.
Preordered 2 of the 16gb models and sold my NC for $115 (w/2g SD) just now. Sooooo.... Here's my last post in the Nook Color forum: Thanks for the fun, devs - see you in the Nexus 7 forum!
There's a case too...
A quick tip for anyone grabbing a n7-- if you get the case, do it in the same purchase order, and you won't be charged extra for shipping.
If you already ordered before the case made its appearance in the store (as I did earlier today), you can call google, cancel the old order and do a new combined one.
$20 for a custom case is a pretty good deal i think considering that HP was charging $70 or something even AFTER they discontinued the touchpad.
As for the venerable NC-- it was introduced in 2010, remember. And its growing inexpense and SD-bootability make it, I think, still a great, fun device for learning to mess around w/Android without much risk of bricking.
(That said, keep in mind I still think the Apple II is awesome :cyclops
The lack of user loadable storage (SDCard) completely destroyed any chance of getting this on my part. I'll probably play with my Nook Color until it either goes bust or something else comes along that is the Nexus + SDCard. This is a disappointing misstep as far as I'm concerned.

Man, Fat tire and Dalingrin getting one and who knows what other awesome devs are getting one. I have a strong feeling development on this is going to be epic!
I'll also be getting one as soon as I can ( probably on my trip to europe in august )
Lot's of exciting things
Tho , I still hope kernel 3.x will take a giant step forward soon so I can use the nook as the CarPc replacement I intended it for and my N7 as my fun/development tablet
I really hope the PDK will bring some exciting times
one article said they decided to open it to all users instead of just oems - if that's true it might be one of the biggest things ever ( like all-in-all sources library , oem and developers work together )
Heh, yes it's time for yet another versus thread: Nexus 7 vs IdeaPad A2109.
Both have 16GB, 1280x800 res, Teg3.
N7 has 7" LCD, JB.
Idea has 9" LCD, HDMI-out, rear cam, micro-SD. It has 4.0, so there'll be a lag in getting CM10.
Worth it for +$50? Wait for sale at MicroCenter for $250?

It really boils down to what you prefer. I like the size of the nexus 7 my only gripe is I wish it had an option for tablet view by default. Having a rear camera is pretty much point less. I never used it on my ipad, its quicker and easier to just use your cellphone. A high resolution front camera would have been nice but they have to save something for the next nexus tablet.

Thats a lenovo, right? if so, no develooement support from cds really. the crazy developement we have for N7 is worth it alone, imo. plus we know jb is performing well on n7. not sure how ics is performing on ideapad.
Isnt this lenovo attempt to copy apple with a square tablet aka 4:3 aspect ratio? I like the 16.9 or 16:10 widescreen formats. better for multimedia. I know lenovo releases a square tsblet. not sure if its this one.
Nothing beats direct os support from google... At least for me...
>Isnt this lenovo attempt to copy apple with a square tablet aka 4:3 aspect ratio?
That's the S2109, which has OMAP4430. The A2109 is 16:10 and Teg3. Yeah, confusing.
Yep, we'll see how the reviews fare, and it'll be worth waiting to see what kind of 9" or 10" KF2 Amazon has lined up for Sep 6 announcement. I'm not worried about dev support. As long as it's a decent tablet, then $300 for a 9" (with micro-SD expansion) is a great deal => many will buy one => good dev support. Same goes for KF2.
I don't see this directly competing with N7, but more with the 10" tabs. Only N7 competitors will be a possible KF2, and of course the iPad mini.
>Nothing beats direct os support from google... At least for me...
I think CM10 will come along much faster than CM9, and since all these cheap Teg3 tabs have same underpinnings, I don't see much of a lag time to get JB as older tabs had with ICS. So, yes, direct Goog support is always good, but it's not an essential as, say, for the Xoom. The micro-SD means more to me.
That's a pretty good deal.
I think I paid like $280 (including tax and shipping) for my 16 GB Nexus 7, although it did come with a $25 Google Play credit.
I'd wait to see if it gets Cyanogenmod support or something though
A2109: 167 DPI
N7: 213 DPI
For me, there's no comparison. I'll never get anything less than 200 DPI again, and stare at a bunch of ugly pixellated text.
The one I just bought from Best Buy does not have a micro-SD card slot. I wonder if the one @ B&H really has one. There's a review up at gsminsider.com (in Chinese) that says it does not. B&H also lists it as having GPS, but mine does not have that, either.
Edit: Mine has GPS after all, but no micro-SD card slot unless it's hiding under the speaker cover panel...

Major bummer, but for the price it's still is a good value. Can you post some close-ups? Not that I don't believe you, but a thousand words and all that.
Funny thing, went Googling for tab specs and found this "confidential" doc for A2109A. This 'A' version has the OMAP 4430 and listed a micro-SD port. It was supposed to be out in July. I guess the Kai deal came along, and Lenovo peeps retrofitted to get quad. Sad about the zapped SD port.
http://shop.lenovo.com/ISS_Static/WW/LA/Direct/es/co/products/tablets/ideapad/A2109A Datasheet.pdf
BTW, the OMAP4 version listed on the Lenovo is the older S2109. The new A2109 is only listed below in "new products," with no specs.
http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/new-products/
>For me, there's no comparison. I'll never get anything less than 200 DPI again, and stare at a bunch of ugly pixellated text.
Higher res would've been nicer of course. I think 1280x800 is fine for 10" (or 9"), given the lower price. It does pose an interesting comparison between this and the Acer A700 32GB, which is $425 at Newegg. A700's excessive heat ish scared me off.
Anyway, more cheap tabs to come. Acer A210 should be here shortly, and will take over the A200 slot at $250 ($300?). Also Teg3. Downer? Possibly short battery life, like the A200. But BL should be open as with rest of Acer tabs, and it will have full USB port.

If by solid you mean solid pieces of feces, then yes, you're right. Over the past 2 years I have bought 4 Lenovo laptops for my customers, from high end to mid range. All of them came back to me with fatal issues, 3 of which were motherboard failure. I'd understand if it was a single model having QA issues, but this was multiple models over a 2 year period. I don't trust Lenovo at all anymore. Or Intel boards.

I have no problem with my Lenovo laptop at all.
I am very interested in the A2109 with its 9" and HDMI out.
Thinking about the Note 10.1, but it may be too expensive for a toy for me...
Is there any word or feeling of community development with this tablet? I am quite interested in this tablet. I have a N7 and love JB and CM10. I would love to be running both of these with this new tablet. It would certainly be a deal breaker for me. It seems that this tablet has no hype and is very underground. Thanks
Lets put tthis bluntly ..lol. there's no hype about it because no one really pressed about it.Lenovo is low key. They do put out some good stuff. But xda developement has always been dead for it. Lets put it this way. Toshiba has better xda support than lenovo. And Toshiba has none..lol. Toshiba and Lenovo are likely the two worst companies whennit comes to xda support. If xda developer support is a concern, then move on stick with nexus 7 or galaxy note 10.1 those are the 2 hottest devices on the market rigght now in tablets. All the major players. Flocking to those devices.

Thanks for the quick reply. I wish that there was a bigger development scene for this because it has everything I wish the N7 had.
The idea pad is huge not 7 inch and won't fit into your pocket

Well you cant really fit the N7 in your pocket either lol
Played with one tonight at Best Buy. Screen wasn't as bad as I feared but it's definitely not great. Also strangely uncomfortable to hold for any length of time. Didn't see a microSD slot (at least one site is reporting expandable memory as a feature). Snappy performance. Nothing else really stood out.
Edit: to clarify, when I say the screen isn't great, I'd say out of the N7, GTab2, and iPad, it's definitely the worst of the bunch
Been looking at surface rt for fun. They are peaking my curiosity. Kinda bored with android, I had my nexus 7 for 7 months now and its great. Why would I not want to buy a surface rt? They sure are dropping in price fast on craigslist, even the dell xps 10 is now 249-299 brand new with free keyboard covers....... Am I crazy to want a rt?
Should not need to be talked out of anything. If you have the relevent info for both, than get what makes you happy. It is you that has to deal with it, not anyone else.

Then get a Surface. You don't need our permission.

As far as I'm concerned, "Friends don't let friends buy Windows tablets". At least not now.
I had an RT tablet provided by my office for about a month. They bought one for everyone here because of the integrated Office and the keyboard cover, and they figured it would make everyone's lives easier.
It didn't turn out that way.
I'm not going to crap all over Windows 8/RT, because there are a lot of really good things about it and the build quality of the tablet is mostly nice.
But the three biggest problems:
1. The build quality of the soft cover is poor. In less than a month several of us had the soft cover split along the seams. It typed well, but you still had to be careful, because if you didn't hit the key properly sometimes it wouldn't take. On the whole a lot more work than a real keyboard.
2. Office is there, but it's a lot more awkward to use than I thought it would be. Sure, there shortcuts, but the need to pick your finger up to touch the screen all them time really slows you down. Something I'd eventually get used to, I'm sure, but it wasn't easy.
3. There really AREN'T any apps for Windows RT. Sure there are some, and there are apps that are supposed to do many other things, they just aren't the options I would have picked if there was choice. But the things I love tablets for are the apps and they just aren't there.
I also was really disappointed with how much real memory was left after the OS was taken into account. I would have had to manage my media constantly to make it work for me. Again, possible, but not worth it.
After a month our IT group took them back from everyone and said they were looking for another solution.
So, if you're bored with Android, you maybe should try a Windows Tablet, they aren't boring and they will keep you busy, just maybe not for the right reasons.
^thanks man. Solid points. I think I will wait for the new nexus 7. Glad you have a good response unlike the other posters here. I was concerned about the availability of apps for rt. And I'm thinking developers won't hop on board since it seems to be a hard sell and small user base.
Friend has an RT, I have a nexus 7.
Biggest thing is just the feel. I can pull out my nexus 7 and I have my app drawer full of games, customisable homescreen, many apps and things to play with. It's a fun tablet.
When I play with my friend's RT though, after exploring the start menu and desktop, there isn't really much. Games are lacking (except for the big names like jetpack joyride and other popular games), and there's nothing "fun" to do. The desktop is kind of empty, as it can't run windows apps, so pretty much the only thing that populates the desktop is the internet explorer and my computer icon, and assorted computer folders.
However, the RT does win the nexus 7 in many points. Productivity wise, it's brilliant. Microsoft office works really well, and split screen multitasking is cool. If you get the type cover, it becomes a mini laptop that can run all your office apps. The nexus 7 can never catch up unless a better office app shows up on the market.
So now it depends on whether you prefer fun, or productivity.
Sell it and get the Surface then.

I just got my N7 last week. Still have no case since there's many choices regarding online but less in stores.
There's a slimline moku and another case I'm torn between.
I also got a Bluetooth Logitech keyboard for typing but not really loving it just yet.
Any who anyone find a keyboard / case solution they are happy with?

Are you kidding? I've had the opportunity to try a Surface RT, and was happy to give it back to the lender... if you're looking for a windows experience, forget it. It doesn't run any standard Windows programs... the apps it does have are a limited number. The interface is confusing and counterintuitive, and for God's sake, the price is well above what something of its caliberr should run.
I have two cases... and I like both for different reasons.

My main case is a leather portfolio style, with the magnets on the cover for auto on and off. It's the standard go to and there are lots around like it. http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=4882380
But my secondary case, which I use for working and productivity was a real find. I bought it off of a recommendation from talkandroid
http://www.talkandroid.com/147462-n...ooks-great-lasts-long-and-costs-little-video/
it was cheap, so I bought it and it works way better than I ever expected in a situation where I need a keyboard. When it's closed it looks great too. You can't really tell from the pictures but the keyboard fits on top of the Nexus 7 to create a kind of hard clamshell for the top of the unit. It's made in a silver plastic with dots that matches perfectly with the tablet.
Unfortunately I have to choose between the cases, I can't use both at once.

I would get a Surface Pro... if it wasn't so expensive.
If you're bored with android....with all you can do to them.....good luck with anything else.
Sent from my cell phone telephone....
Go get a surface. Someone had to buy one eventually..
Don't expect much thou... There are no apps, it's a battery hog, chock full of manufacturing problems, it won't run windows apps (despite the branding).
surface sucks.
done:victory:
I've heard bad things about surface too, like build quality and that the touch screen isn't so good. About apps, you can pay a visit to windows market place yourself to see.
I'd suggest another option, one of those hybrid tablet/laptops running x86 windows 8.
At the very least, you can run bluestacks or virtual android on it, and have a fully functional PC which transforms into android if you need it.
Of course it's a bit more expensive, but it's not like they are giving surfaces away for free.
I've been getting bored with android too, but that's the phone, I'm keeping my N7 forever
I might get a Lumia instead of my Xperia though.
I really want(ed) a Windows 8 tablet, too.
My problem is that there doesn't seem to be many good x86 ones. There's some meh-priced RT tablets but Windows RT is immensely more limited.
I've completely held off from getting a Windows x86 tablet because every damned one I try out in Future Shop and Best Buy with the Atom are slow, sluggish, freeze often and just seem laggy as hell.
I'm avoiding them all for now, and eyeballing Acer's upcoming 8 inch x86 Windows tablet which may be cheaper and has a small form factor like my N7.
I'm personally waiting a year or two for them to smooth things out. The hardware is too overpriced for what you get and having legacy x86 applications isn't that great when they're not meant for touch. Windows RT is also a joke unless they let devs compile for the desktop. They're totally cool though but not good enough for me.
Hopefully Android x86 will also mature by then so I don't have to give up the ecosystem.

That's coincidental, not irony.... But if Alanis Morissette got it wrong, you can't blame others for doing same.
Besides use Tapatalk instead. It actually works better on the iPhone 6+ than Note 4 (you see more content/posts on it).
I have both the 6+ & Note 4 (and a moto x 2014) and contrary to popular belief the two can co-exist very happily - both great phones. My app usage is near identical between them too.
Both have great screens and great battery life. And after 5 months use, neither my Note 4 has a gap gate issue or iPhone 6+ bend gate issue....
I don't understand why some in android or apple communities get so insecure about these things. Just enjoy whatever device you are using.
That being said I'm not sure why your post is entirely relevant here and will inevitably stir up a hornets nest.
I must admit I have thought about it while sitting here waiting for lollipop. Considered the Nexus 6 as well, but at the end of the day this Note can do things that none of the competition can. The pen mostly but the removable battery and sd card are also nice. 6+ would be ok if I got the 128gb version but here in New Zealand a 32gb Nexus 6 costs the same as a note 4 so it's a total no brainer, lollipop or not.

why? Just interested...
I actually had the same thought, because I admire the beauty of the iPhone. But after taking a look I realized that they wanted me to pay extra cash for the exchange which is ridiculous since they get a better phone from me then I get from them.. But I might trade phones, just to try out the 6+ someday..
Im waiting for "IPhone 17 plus +" until then I stick with Note series.

I actually think it's not a bad idea at all. I've been with Andorid since the start and never had an Iphone, but there's tons of apps that have better support on iOS/apps that are not on Android at all. anyway..why not change once in awhile and try new things right? maybe i'll do it with my next phone
I made complete research, and just for change of taste, i went to buy an iphone 6+, got it booked here in Pakistan. but ended up buying a Note 4, and my first 2-3 days were of full depression because of battery drains but now its all fine. the only regret i have is the sound quality i was having with htc one m8 before, otherwise note4 is soooo awesome <3
After just one day with it, I quite content with it. Seems to be pretty solid...so far.

The fact that you can't use NFC (no secure token such as yubikey) for anything other than ApplePay, or that you can't use openvpn or PGP on an iPhone makes it an unsuitable/undesirable device for me. I hate how you can only run software endorsed by Apple on a device you paid for.

Agree but that's how they maintain the pubic perception that their platform is stable, secure and reliable. In reality it's no better that a high end Android these days, it's just that it's much easier for Android users to completely bork their phone by installing badly built apps.
Also iOS is easier to develop for, so long as you're compatible with the latest iOS you don't really need to worry about much else. Android is completely different. People could be running your app on anything from gingerbread to lollipop, have from a 1ghz single core cpu to a quad/octa core monster, 512mb to 3gb ram, 600x800 up to 1440x2560 screen res, etc etc.
In other words I couldn't give a **** for iOS, but the app ecosystem is kind of tempting.

That said to the OP, iPhone 6 plus is a fine device. Enjoy the great apps, a great consistent camera and great battery life.

Can you elaborate on this? While your statement holds partial truth, it was also ironic that I tried to download a well-known android app on my iPhone. Never, EVER make me feel like I wasted money on an education again!
