[Q] How do I know if my N1 is AMOLED? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How do I know if my Nexus One is AMOLED vs Super LCD? YES, i know how nice AMOLED displays are, and in fact, I had a vibrant. They're gorgeous. The reason I ask is because the N1 I got, today, has a really nice screen that reminds me of the AMOLED on the vibrant, but I'm not sure if it's actually AMOLED or Super LCD since I've never seen a super LCD display, that I know of..

AMOLED screens have a "PenTile Matrix". Find a lupe or even try the water drop trick to view the screen pattern.

Boot into the bootloader. Check your MICROP version:
0b15 is AMOLED
0c15 is SLCD

Install a terminal emulator and type "dmesg", then scan the results for one of the following:
samsung_oled_panel = AMOLED
sony_tft_panel = SLCD

Got it guys, thanks!!

AMOLED / LED display for HD2?

Just out of curiosity, is there any AMOLED display for HD2?
The only thing that i envy about Desire is that bright & high-contrast display. I wonder if we can get something similar to that on HD2?
Highly doubt it.
too expensive. they wouldnt make. samsung wants it all for themselves. lol... =D
I have a Nexus One, and the only thing I miss from my HD2 is the LCD. People may think their better, but the technology isn't there yet. The top white bar at the top of the screen causes the pixels the die faster making that area a little darker than the rest of the screen. Hardly noticeable, but still there. It's impossible right now for a AMOLED on a HD2 because the biggest AMOLED for phones Samsung makes, is the one in the Desire. But, there is a 4" SUPER AMOLED in the Galaxy S.
AMOLED screen on HD2 would be awesome , but LCD is just fine , look nice and is smooth on touching
4.3" Galaxy S2 is SAMOLED
Could it be possible to put a screen of salaxy s2 to hd2???

If you manage to build one from scratch then yes.. Screen on phones are only meant for that model it wont fit because of shape/size difference and then there's the ribbons and the overall software to it
AMOLED sucks. SAMOLED is good

Super LCD on refurb nexus ones?

Has anyone who needed to replace their phone with a refurb recieved one with a SLCD? I am wondering because of the whole amoled shortage and all. (I prefer SLCD over AMOLED)
Haven't heard of any on the boards here... Oh, congratz on your Nexus For some reason I thought u had a HD2

LOL, I did, just sold it XD. I will report when i get my refurb soon, just need enough money so they can see that I am good to send to. I really dislike the unaligned "pixels" on AMOLED screens. SuperAMOLED or SuperLCD FTW.
I just swapped mine out with HTC and the replacement has an amoled screen. Did they even start selling the super lcd's?

i'm with you on that one. i also have an AMOLED Nexus One and i HATE the pentile arrangement. It's a joke that the inventors claim that the differences are not visible from certain distance, because i can see them very clearly at normal distance.
I'm just waiting for the Dev Phone to be sold with SLCD and then i'm going to buy one and sell my AMOLED version.
i just got my phone back from htc and it looks like i got a brand new one so how can i tell if i got AMO or SLCD?
thanks
Just look at it to tell the difference. Does it have the pentile display? (oled) Or does the black look washed out? (lcd)
i dunno im so used to my g1 cuz i took forever to send it in, it just looks so good i cant tell, i'll wait until my buddy stops by with his so i can compare
i just got a new phone from htc (my old one i turned in for warranty repairs) and it came with an amoled screen. i was kinda worried about getting the slcd since i did the swap right around the time of the announcement.
I wish they would do that. I don't mind blacks being a tiny bit greyer, so long as everything is symmetrical and easy to look at. It took me like 3 days just to tolerate text or anything on the screen.

yep, compared to some old WVGA LCD screens like on the Touch Diamond 2 (hell, even the td1 display was great) or the Motorola Milestone, the Nexus One AMOLED PenTile display looks like utter garbage when showing text.
Reading this fuzzy text for a longer period of time is really bad for the eyes. Nexus One was a superphone in many areas when it was released, but the display was a major step backwards.
I don't know what's the fuzz about SLCD. There are comparison videos online you can look up. SLCD obviously is worse that AMOLED. The brightness, color vibrancy, and visible angle are all worse than AMOLED.

X2!!! indeed!!!
Replacement phones are refurbished n1's, and since SLCD on nexus was announced after the consumer version was discontinued and there have been no reports of the dev phone having SLCD, I would say that it is safe to assume there is not going to be any SLCD anytime soon.

Didn't someone mention that the fuzzy text can be corrected by the driver of the display? Currently the text ant-aliasing is suitable for traditional RGB subpixel layout, but it is possible to correct this on a pentile subpixel display. I wonder how probable this is. Some people said that text look sharp on the Galaxy S. Maybe Samsung has corrected this issue with software?

Hmmm, I would rather Have the darkness of AMOLED, and the pixel alignment of an LCD.
Hmmm Monday I will be able to order the refurb, paypal is stupid and makes money transfers to and from the bank 3-5 days long. So I cant have the money on hold yet to do it.
I would also like to know! AMOLED and SLCD which is better?
I am getting my refurb soon hopefully. I will post what I get.

[Q] HD7 Screen

Does the US T-Mobile version have a S-LCD screen or a TFT? Every review has a different answer it's driving me crazy! I cant tell I have a TFT on my G2 and the HD7 screen looks better but it might just be because its 4.3".
Honestly I would tweet this one @HTC on twitter and trend #wp7 to put some pressure on them to answer.
The best way to get the most accurate answer would be to tweet @htc the question and trend #wp7 in the same tweet so they actually answer it in this lifetime.
It is a normal TFT, not a S-LCD.

From what I can see and almost every review and or tech specs I have seen it is a Super LCD screen.
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=2636&c=htc_hd7_16gb
They are nonsense tech specs that have never been been given out by HTC. Look at a direct comparison between an SLCD screen liek hte HTC Mozrt against the HTC 7, and you'll notice the HD7's is far much inferior. That, and it appears to give the same colour reproduction as the HD2.

These are just some of the links that do state it does have a SLCD. Even if it had just a TFT LCD I still would love the device. Coming from a Vibrant on T-Mobile I noticed that with the SAMOLED displays that the colors are over saturated and not a true representation (that is my opinion though). It also looks like as Super TFT screens are also knows as SLCD screens according to the last article i posted
Merry Christmas
Eric
And none of those articles state any official HTC source >.< Its also worth noting that ordiniary LCD's also don't give accruate colour reproduction, instead giving dull, undersaturated, cold feeling colours. Depends whether you prefer vibrancy or not - most people prefer more vibrancy
OS change
hi guys any of you have shifted from a galaxyS to an hd7? Was it worth it.. as considering there are few messenger apps in the market? im thinkin of shifting from "fragmented android" to WP7. Just the thing that worries me is i could just find one messenger app out there.. namely FIM. I really love the Metro UI
Moreover GSMarena seems to be complaining about the sensitivity of the screen. Is it true that its not sensitive..also the blurry text issue.. If someone could please shed some light on this.. Thanks
I'm not having any issues w screen sensitivity. also, my screen is bright, clear and doesnt suffer from some of the issues from some reviews. however, the display sets i used all had poor screens and fade when viewed from an angle.
bought mine in singapore and the screen is better than my hd2 screen.

Thanks for the tip. I didnt get this part though."the display sets i used all had poor screens" yu mean had replaced your HD7 a couple of times till you got one with the right screen?

do Samsung make different screens for the Samsung galaxy s

Hi
i have two Samsung galaxy s i9000
One screen looks a bit dull and slightly pink and the other looks really clear.
The dull one is old.
Both have been flashed with the same Rom and are both set us the same
They should be all the same. Are both phones the same origin-carrier?
Sounds like a problem with the pinkish one. Is your kernel voodoo color enabled ?
(But if the phone is old, it may be that the screen is getting, well, used.)
we sell phones, we have brand new and second hand units, regarding the lcd... sometimes if we change lcd screen theres a different resolution between the china-made lcd which is cheaper than the original lcd we sell. did you.change the kcd before? is it second hand unit
Neither phone has had a screen replaced. I've had both from new.
The pink on is 14 months old and the other is two months old.
Only noticed the old one looks poor when i got the new one.
Ill try take a pic.
Will have to use each phone to do it no camera.
A video of quadrant would really show you. Ill see if i can use my mates phone later
Im sure i read somewhere ages ago that the screen can get burnt like with the really old big back monitors do you think it could be that.
There are no marks like battery or the signal bars like you would expect.
Its like someone messed with the colour and contrast or something
they are both amoled screens, right?
usually it shoult last longer than one year, but amoled has a really short lifetime, compaired to all anorganic screens (e. g. LCD)
expecially the blue subpixels (physicaly more energetic than read light) gets weard out a lot faster
and organic screens get weard faster if they get hot or warmer than they should (cooling the screen extends lifetime (in a bag <-> close to the body)
but this are just some background informations, i cant really imagine that a amoled screen is used up in around a year
try to flash a new and a same ROM
then tell us
this may reset all reselutıon parameter on both of them
Maybe the new one is Galaxy SL. Samsung stopped production on i9000 and started making i9003 with super clear LCD displays. Maybe the new one is that.

But amoled has better quality than sc-lcd
But Super amoled screen display a pinkish white when viewed from the side. This was eleminated when Samsung put sclcd displays. So, the old one may be amoled and new one sclcd

AMOLED has better black and bright colors, but it's less clear and has problems with some colors. Mine, for example, has problems with gray: it looks terrible and it turns to red on lower brightness. AMOLEDs are also very different, one producted batch of screens can be pinkish, other one - blueish, third one - yellowish.

HD7 display is naturally white or black?

Hey everyone,
i have an interesting question about hd7 LCD: are the pixels black or white when voltage is applied? In a "normally white" LCD, the screen will be white if no voltage is applied to any of the pixels. In contrast, a "normally black" LCD will be black if no voltage is applied.
Does anyone know which mode of operation HD7 use? Is it a function of being TN+Film, P/MVA, or IPS? it would just be nice to know.

Just curious byt why would this be important ?
are you applying that because of so...the light or dark theme might be more suitable..depending ?

many factors . HD7 seems to use a TN + film display . Unlike the iphone 3GS which is using IPS LCD
1) battery life
in Normally "white" LCDs , no power is applied to display white, Black consumes power
in Normally "black" LCDs , no power is applied to display black, White consumes power
2) Screen protectors
I have no concrete research on this but certain screen protectors for wp7 phone may display better with white theme/ black text because screen protectors with a textured matt screen tend to blur white text. Like wise the opposite is true for screen protectors which are non anti glare
3) longevity of screen
of course when no power is applied to the screen for display of white or black , yr screen is less likely to burn out faster
I had HTC 7 Pro and now Titan. Both SLCDs, as I assume the HD7 is also. When I had the 7 Pro I looked in to this and got the impression white would be the correct answer here. I looked in to this because of the theoretical battery save. I never tested what is the real difference though.
On amoled screen the natural state would be black.

I believe TN display and SLCD is different
SLCD is more power efficient, has deeper blacks and contrast and it has a few types like IPS , ect

Yes you are correct. I was on my mobile yesterday and didnt look up what panel HD7 has, I only assumed it is the same as 7Pro and Titan, but its not.
Only the trophy and HTC titan/ titan 2 uses SLCD.
the rest use TN display + film
If i am, not wrong , though the newer upcoming Win 8 phones may use SLCD 2 or Super Amoled HD
