Declining internal SD performance - LG Optimus 2x

Anyone else experiencing declining performance as uptime grows?
Mine is up for over 154 hours and SD performance has gone to hell.
This is noticeable with music beginning to stutter and Dungeon Defenders (a very demanding game) becoming unplayable. General web browsing also feels less responsive.
I've just rebooted the device and it's fine.
I'm now using MCR Fr17, but I've experienced the same on stock V10D. I wonder if the 0622 update is any better in this regard?

I have never experienced this. What sd-card do you have? I have a class-10 card and it works perfect. And also I don't see how the baseband would change anything for the sd-card but that could be beyond my knowledge. Music stuttering have previously been common in CM7 but is gone in later builds but then it was from start, not after 154 hours of running.

I am referring to the internal SD which is where I store my music and pretty much everything else. I only have a 1GB external SD for flashing ROMs.
Anyway I went ahead and updated to Fr19. Fingers crossed this won't happen again.

I don't think it's the sdcard performance degrading. It may be that your system is not efficiently cleaning up RAM. Thus you're having alot of apps that you've already closed still sitting in live memory. You can use various process managers to check it. (My personal fave is osmonitor.)

[Q] Lag on ALL phones?

My q is this: Has anyone been able to confirm that the lag is there on ALL phones if we assume they have the same fw and apps installed?
Nope my brother has orginal Bell i9000 without any hacks or mods abd his runs blazing fast .....i was so surprised!!
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
JH2 rom stock no lag fix, running very fast, no delay at all
400+ apps installed, i use about 200 of them, most of them are tools or games
I must have about 300 apps installed and am still on stock with no lag fix and the only time I get lag is when updating or installing from the market.
Stock JM1, no root or lagfix, only issues I have are with the slow arse marketplace.
Running JPK.
Without lagfix it runs ok. But when I install the lag fix the speed increase is obvious. Apps start and stop with little to no delay, media scanning at boot takes a fraction of the time, and the odd stutter from going through menus in apps is virtually eliminated.
Until you've compared the phone with and without the lagfix on the same firmware, you wont be able to give a decent answer.
I think most people would be happy with the performance mainly because they haven't experienced anything faster and compared other fast phones.
And maybe some firmwares suffer from lag less than others. Seems to be a bit worse in Froyo but I could be wrong, it's been a while since I used Eclair now.
Hmm, what does this all imply? Can we be sure this is a sw issue when some phones with hundreds of apps have no lag but mine with 100 apps lags as h...?
I have a recent Bell i9000m with stock JH2 and no lag. I've only installed maybe 20 additional apps but the phone is used heavily throughout the day (music, videos, facebook, twitter, browsing, along with regular voice/text).
I ran OCLF just to try it but didn't find any difference in performance, just an over inflated Quadrant score.
Can some lag depend on what memory card is used? Fast quality cards vs Cheaper cards?
I have never had any really annoying lag
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
A cheaper/slower external SD card wouldn't cause any system lag because the system isn't doing regular read/writes with it. It might cause a photo gallery or music index to load a bit slower if that kind of data was on the card.
I run a class 4 micro SD and the performance doesn't change.

[Q] O2x performance degradation.

Got a sim free o2x and immediately upgraded it to gingerbread using LG's tool.
I have noticed that the performance degrades over time especially noticable with scrolling web pages and youtube.
From a clean boot, i fire up youtube and can watch big bug bunny in 1080p full screen and very smooth. When I come back to it a few days lastr, the same video stutters and the audio also skips. I can create this effect a lot quicker by playing something with the built in video player. After having played a video on SD card, i go back to youtube and its a stutter show again.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this using standard gingerbread on the O2x? I'v tried killing various apps and uninstalling others but nothing very scientific and the only way I can get back to normal performance if with a reboot. Any help gratefully appreciated!
Sounds to me like the ram is busy. Just try an app that cleans up the ram.
Stock kernel has bug in memory management. Solution is to flash for example Spica's kernel, latest r11-c is very very good.
Evidently that supposes to root - instal clockwork mod recovery first.

I have a problem with Spica's kernel , I think that it doesnt support netfilter (iptables) thus I cant use Droidwall, any solution?
Thanks
Instal iptables from market?
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mgranja.iptables
Edit: the app says that iptables is already installed in kernel, not in the latest version but present. That's perhaps the problem. Only thing is to ask Spica to update to last version.
Ohhhh, i will check it later! thanks!!!
Have tried some RAM clean up apps, unfortunately it makes no difference. The amount of RAM free seemed to make no difference, i had it running smoothly with 82mb free and stuttering with over 100mb ram. If something like this was happening on my linux box I would assume something is hogging the cpu but the apps i have tried seem to indicate nothing is consuming a lot of cpu resources.
I don't want to consider reflashing with another ROM if I can avoid it. Is there anything else I could try?
Kernel problem. Read above.

Reboot your dam phone then.... pcs also get laggy when they have been on for a long time, so reboot and or flash a decent kernel.
Use stock kernel\rom from 20o
I have the same problem. After about 36 hours, the phone becomes laggy. It lags when waking up the screen, it lags in menus, etc so i have to reboot it every 36 hours or so.
Speaking of kernels and roms, i've tried them all by now. From CM7 (which i could not get along with, functionality wise) to Topogigi, spica, Thanatos, carburano, gueste and erestor.
I am now on gueste 2.1 stable SR1 and the problem persists.
After about 16 hours wake-up and the lockscreen lags, after about 24 hours scrolling becomes choppy, after 36 hours dialer, contacts and other apps start slowly and lag big time.
This is the same behaviour in all roms and kernels tried (except CM7 which is a no go for me).
L.E.:
Of course, rebooting solves the problem for the next 20 hours or so, but its quite inconvenient.

Cm7 and random freezing

I'm running cm7.1 stable, running off emmc, and every now and then my beautiful NC just locks up, I have it OC to 1.2ghz, I did a search and only end up with results from older nightly threads. Is this a common issue or just me?
PS... I have reflashed and cleared, data, cache, etc..
Thanks
Sent from my NookColor using XDA
Have you always had the issue or did it start recently? I would look at uninstalling any new apps you downloaded prior to the issue starting. There is a good chance you might find a bad app to be your problem.
It wasnt happening before, I tried cm9 with opengl, after I reverted back to cm7(fresh install not nandroid) it started happening, the apps I am running were the same apps I was running before trying cm9(and the freezing problem wasn't happening)
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA
Since you are going for a clean install anyway and there is no issue with the CM7 install script did you try the factory reset option or was it just the caches that you cleared? Have you confirmed that you have a good download of the CM7 zip?
Also you might want to try flashing your latest nandroid and make sure that is still running the same as when you created it. If so and you still want to install fresh try it coming off of that one instead of from CM9.

I've had trouble with both Beautiful Widgets and Google Currents locking up my CM7. Got rid of those and I essentially never get lockups any more.

So did removing BW resolve the random freeze? My wife's NC is doing the exact same thing and she has BW too. But I just installed CM7 on hers last night so not sure if BW is the culprit or not yet.
I've been running CM 7.2.0 RC1 from SD card about a month now, and I've experienced a number of freezes. On April 5, I had two freezes within a few hours, and I started keeping track of the freezes, hoping a pattern would emerge.
From April 5 through April 17, there were a total of eight freezes. I don't know what the uptime was when the first freeze occurred on April 5, but all subsequent freezes occurred with less than two days uptime. During those 13 days, uptime got above two days on two occasions; both times a "Sleep of Death" occurred before uptime reached three days.
Was there a pattern? Yes! Every single freeze occurred while I was using Opera Mobile browser, and browsing these forums at forum.xda-developers.com.
On April 18 I started using Dolphin to browse the xda forums, and there has not been a single freeze so far. (I still use Opera Mobile for other browsing.) Uptime had reached five days when I voluntarily rebooted this morning.
I realize this may not be relevant to the rest of the discussion in this thread, which seems to deal with CM 7.1. Then again, maybe it is. This seemed the logical place to report the observation.
Update: Opera Mobile has updated to version 12.00.ADR-1204201824 on April 25. I'll revert to using Opera Mobile on the xda forums, to see if it still freezes.
My freezing problem was resolved by moving a bunch of apps from SD back to phone. I left on the SD partition apps I don't use often, and I made sure all apps on my launcher page in ADW were on phone.

You really don't gain much and lose a lot by running apps installed to sd. Since everything is automatically on 'sd' with an sd install, those that say they are installed to phone are really still on sd (in /data, which is also on sd). The only reason to install apps to sdcard is if you have so many installed that you have no more room in /data. And with sd installs, usually the /data is made of a generous size. Installing apps to sd slows your system since it has more system overhead to work through.
I know it sounds confusing, but with sd installs, installing to phone means installed to /data which is a partition of your sd. If it says installed to sd, it means it is installed to sdcard, which is another partition of your sd. So no matter where you tell it, it is all on sd and /data is faster because of less system overhead.
For anyone else having this problem, I found that if it was overclocked for me, it would freeze a lot more frequently. But, that may have just been bad luck on my part!

Came to post the same thing. My nook color will run max OC 1200 but often it will freeze for no reason. After many attempts of uninstalling the many different apps I thought were causing it I started moving the OC lower in small increments and running for a long as possible without a freeze. Finally got down to 975 and haven't had a freeze in days.
Kinda disappointed though since someone got it at 1600 and most run at 1200 and all I can get is less than 1000. I'm probably moving to a Asus Transformer Infinity soon anyways though.
It has been known since the early days of Dalingrin's overclocking kernels that many of the NC's have issues with anything above 1100 MHz and undervolting can create a great deal of instability.
My recommendations are to try 1100 MHz max... and lower voltage .05 mV at each step. I personally never have issues with these settings...
You can then try lowering voltage .05 mV at a time until you start having issues... then increase it back to the last one you had no issues with.
I just leave mine at 1100 and .05 mV lower than the reported "Stock Voltage"

[Q] Hd+ extremely suggish

My HD+ of late has become more and more sluggish and sometimes becomes unresponsive for a few seconds. It hangs when opening an app, a book or while browsing the web. I am using the updated stock 2.1. Checking the RAM, I was surprised to see free RAM as low as 80MB. Killing apps running in the background does not help much. The internal memory is only 40% full. I am at a loss to understand what is going on. Has anybody else noticed this ? Should I wipe it clean and start again ? My device is not rooted. Any advice regarding backing up would be helpful.
Thanks

I ran into this, but seemed to be due to going under 3gb of storage. The HD+ does not seem to like going under that.
maybe uninstall some questionable apps

I am using Nova launcher from day 1 and the performance has deteriorated over time, so I cannot blame it. It could be an app hogging the memory. I have to kill a lot of processes to make it functional. I routinely get the message about the program not responding irrespective of which app I have opened. Even the browser (chrome, ICS) just crashes.
So after booting up my new HD+ for the first time today, and letting it update to 2.1, it was extremely slow... Slower than my 600mhz HTC aria. I tried rebooting again and installing apex. i have google sync disabled.
Then I force stopped "Home" and cleared its data. The tablet runs better, even when using B&N Home launcher.
its still not as fast as the dual core should be. I wish there was a way to reduce or disable animations in developer options.
I may try CM10.1

I'll add my name to those seeing lag since the update to 2.1. I'll try this and see if I get improvment. Anyone have any idea why this might be happening?
My tablet is running at a more satisfactory speed since I froze/disabled a bunch of bn apps, ditched apex, and use lightning launcher/zeam with full!screen. I also used spareparts+ to set animation transitions to fast.
Just don't make the mistake I made first of uninstalling twitter or chrome. All your hard work will reset.
I may make a symlinked build prop and play with this.
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40961
It worked on my htc one s with similar specs.
So I adjusted the heapgrowthlimit and heapsize.
The stock settings were at 96M and 160M respectively. I don't know what they were pre-2.1
I changed a symlinked buildprop to 64 and 384.
So it feels a bit snappier. Could be placebo, but it's definitely not slower. If anyone else tries adjusting these let me know what you think.

I checked and found verygreen's CM10.1 rom (emmc) has 64 and 256. It is very snappy.
It's not apple to apple comparison as CM10.1 is based on Android 4.2.2.
I'm surprised stock has only 160M though.
The killer for me is the library sync process. I disabled the app, but it still does its thing. When a game or app slows down, it is when the sync starts. It is random, but should only be when the device is turned on, or when content is changed. The way they set it up makes no sense.
Restarting the device still shows the app disabled, but still syncs.
There also appears to be a lag that happens and is only fixed by a restart, but that is not as common as the sync issue.

That is one of the reasons that led me to replace the stock rom with CM10.1 on emmc. It is much better than the stock rom...
I really do not need that library having both Google Play and Amazon App store. I also have the Nook App which works just fine with CM10.1.
Even after clearing cashe and removing large data games, my HD+ was still acting sluggish. Based on the apps running in the background, no rogue apps seems to be causing it. No games beyond small ones were playing smooth and would randomly studder. Flash content also was making the device run very hot.
I boxed the HD+ up for return. Not sure what the issue is, but probably is 2.1, since the chipset should be fine. I might exchange for another and start from scratch with 10.1... Not sure at the moment. Were it not for the lag and odd heat issues, I would keep the device. Perhaps 10.1 is the answer, but
my return window ends soon.
I feel bad, since when I first got the device, it worked fine and doubted people that said the lag is there and common. They were right and I was wrong, so would be nice if 10.1 fixes the issues.
Added: Though my Excite 7.7 is a lot faster overall, I miss the HD+ display already.

I was able to play Dungeon Hunter 4 on CM10.1 and it seems to be okay. Web browsing is also very smooth. Flash does make it quite hot but same as my HTC Amaze Android phone so I'm used to it.
However, The HD+ is definitely not perfect, once in a long while (maybe like once in 2-3 days) the touch UI may become unresponsive.
That can be fixed by turning off and turning back on the display. Also I had screen flickering in settings screen(black background) under CM10.1 RC2. I have since flashed the latest RC4 and the flickering is gone. I have not tested it long enough to see if it still has the same UI problem.
Sorry for your bad experience. I am keeping the HD+ for myself but would not buy it for gifts because I know it has some issues that are not easy to fix without modification. And not everyone wants or has time to mod a tablet.
Update:
Just ran another Vellamo HTML5 benchmark and scored 1899 with CM10.1 RC4...very impressive.
On stock it was 1378 and I had 1379 on Nexus 7. Of course, benchmark may not be 100% indicative of daily operations.
Web browsing seems to be at least on par with Nexus 7, though. With the bigger screen it is definitely a more pleasant experience.
It seems that there is a big difference in benchmarks and actual performance, at least for some individual devices. I tried everything including CM10, orginal stock and the latest stock. Each time it would be fine initially and then gradually slow down to become unresponsive. I 'killed' processes, background apps frequently to make it usable but that ought not to be the way for regular use. I play no games except occasional spider solitaire. The main use was web browsing and reading books. I also have a samsung 7plus tab which did not suffer from any of these issues and became my go to device. So for now, its THANKS to the developers and goodbye Nook via ebay.

The 4470 for browser marks is faster than the Tegra 3. At least that is what Anandtech shows.
I took mine back to Best Buy, but do miss the display. Played MAME reloaded great. Seems any game that retrieves data on the fly has issues with stuttering with 2.1 at least. The reason I think this, is small games do not have the issue, nor does MAME which loads the games into memory to play. No on the fly data access.
Still tempted to get another and try 10.1 from the start. Even after a reset, 2.1 had the issues with games and other apps where my Excite 7.7 is smooth. In the Nooks defence, the TF300 is not real smooth either. A little better than the Nook HD+, but slower with MAME. Nook ruled with MAME.

Just curious...did you try CM10 or 10.1. Also did you run it on SD card or emmc?
I didn't like CM10 at all and tried CM10.1 on SD card at first. The SD card performance simply sucks. It is only good for experiments not for any serious usage in my opinion. (Had poor benchmark results worse than stock, too.)
I tried CM10.1 RC2 and RC4 on emmc mainly for reading and web browsing. Both worked great.
Although I was able to play Dungeon Hunter 4, (from the start to boss fight) I believe I get a bit better frame rates on Nexus 7.
It's playable on Nook HD+ at reasonable frame rates but not super fast.(looks much better due to bigger screen)
I did not have any io issues likely because Dungeon Hunter 4 load all contents into memory up front in each area.
When I transition to a different area I did notice a temporary lag---must be from the loading of new data.
There is one trade-off with CM10.1 which is that the free gems supported by ads do not work.
I installed promotional apps but the gems never show up on the Nook HD+. That's not the case with Nexus 7.
I actually started using the Nook HD+ with CM10 on SD. The primary reason for buying it was the active developer community. I chose CM 10 over 10.1 as it was considered more stable than 10.1. Initial experience was great. However, I found that the the stock was better for battery life and for the sleep function with shutting the case. Then I updated the stock with the latest version and gradually the device became slower irrespective of using CM 10 or stock. I did not move to installing CM 10.1 on emmc as by then I had decided to sell the device. Again, not being a 'gamer' the great screen resolution and other specs was less important than battery life and responsiveness on browsing for the way I used the device. Like most things in life, I am sure there is a right 'one' for each one of us.
Battery life for what it was mainly intended (reading stuff and light apps) is great, but playing Flash and 3D games seems to be the main killer. Playing local video was good too. Since I am a gamer to some degree, the stutter from any game that loads data bugged me. No other Android device I have does this. The TF300 has issues with multitasking, but games do not stutter.
I think the issue is 2.1, but perhaps they cut corners with ram and flash speed? This would explain the stutter and the slooow load time for games like Asphalt 7. Even 108mb size pak files for Quake 2 loaded slowly. Almost ten times slower than my other devices. A few seconds or less on the other devices.

Android 5.1.1 LMY48B finally the memory leak is solved!!

After 8 months google finally fix the memory leak in android lollipop. Thanks :crying::crying: Am I dreaming?
Having the memory load increasing is not, in itself, a memory leak.
The Nexus 5 comes with 2 Gb of RAM, the goal is not to have memory load below 300 mb in every case (or you can buy a 512 mb-RAM smartphone)
The leak is a bug in memory management which increase memory load without any limit, thus slowing the device and crashing it. I did not experience this under 5.1 with Franco and stock kernel.
I can confirm that franco kernel does not solve the issue. For me the issue is easily reproduced by opening farm heroes saga and swiping it away, After a couple of times the system ram goes up to 1.4gig

The same problem with franco kernel, bad luck.
To recreate the problem, simply start a game like Farm Heroes Saga, then close it by swiping away. For each time I do this the system memory increases 100mb or more until there is no more space and then cell phone stops responding. Additional I noticed than when I start Farm Heroes Saga for example the free memory on ‘Show Cache Processes’ is negative as can be seen on the print I took, and there is no free memory, this problem can be recreated even in the first minute after boot simply by starting the game.
i don t know if is due to the memory leak but after 3 days (fresh factory image flash) i m facing the annoying launcher redraw and high system memory usage:780 mb with 1,2 gb of peak

I dont want to create a seperate thread so I am asking here. Got Nexus 5 a few days ago, started reading about 5.1 update and memory leak issue. Tried to update to 5.1 but gave up(usb driver issue). Today I noticed that ram usage for apps increases and does not drop down after shutting down apps (games mainly). System ram is constantly about 300-400 but app ram got from 300 to over 600 in about 6 hours. Is this also a memory leak or maybe apps just do not completely shut down?
Memory going up does not mean there is a memory leak, it means memory no longer in use has not yet been garbage collected which is fine.
Yes, I wouldn't go purely on what the stats say in Settings > Apps > Running.
I haven't made my mind up yet - memory usage according to that screen is even higher than it was on 5.0.1 yet apps aren't killed anywhere near as often. Of course, it's early days though.
It's been said before, but sadly the new "norm" is now becoming 3GB RAM for high-end devices... and most new versions of Android are going to aimed at running best on the new handsets. I suppose that's to be expected.

Of course it is,just to force older phones users to buy new high end Android smartphones with more RAM. Now 3GB of RAM s getting standart, next year 3GB of RAM will get too little and 4GB of RAM will become a standart and so on..This is how marketing works.
My N5 (Factory Reset then Flashed Factory Image then Factory Reset) is up since 73 Hours, it uses acutally 490MB RAM for System and 898MB RAM for Apps,
in these 73 Hourse the App-Drawer was not redrawed once. I hope it will run like this for a long time.
The only thing that hasnt work, was the flashing with the Flash-All.bat.

exactly ! but ppl need to understand that what they need with phone.
i don't see any app that need more than 2GBs for ram on market plus multitasking is exceptional in N5 for me bcz i don't use tons of chatting apps who always runs and eats all resources of phone , i use heavy games and N5 still works great with highest graphics...and i bet none of Samsung or any other premium devices works with them as impressive as this 1.5yr old device still do ! so for me N5 is still more than enough
phone shouldn't be excessive better in specs than what you wants from phone. Bcz it does't make any sanse unless one have lots of money and he/she only want to waste it one way or another
I thought this was fixed at first. I picked up my phone this morning and went to check news and the whole thing was froze for like 5 seconds then starting working, but stuttering. Do I checked apps and low and behold I had about ten apps restarting, just like in the previous lollipop. Except this time I only see half my apps restarting (so far) instead of nearly all of them.

sounds like almost my case
I've read several android blogs they claim damaging, HTC, ect have fixed the memory leak in their roms (although I heard people claim this in cm12 also). Just out of curiosity can anyone confirm this is true?
I tried loading and swiping CoC 5 times and my free Ram still remains at 1200.
My battery life has definitely gotten significantly worse after 5.1. Drained over 20% in just an hour with very light usage.
