[Q]Creating a zip to install kernel and CWM image - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, it seems there's a lot of development that has gone stagnant for the Tab (CDMA especially) so I was looking for a way to roll CWM 3 and a specific zImage into a zip file that could be flashed from any version of CWM. Just not sure if it would require compiling a kernel with the version of CWM that I want, or if there's a way to get them both lined up in a zip. If anyone has some insight, i'd appreciate it.

It would be helpful for gsm tabbers to know how to make a cwm zip file to flash modems too. Help please?

you need to sing the zip to be able to flash from CWM
anyone can use one of my themes zip just delete everything inside it and put yours
thanks to Gang for this though
or you can simply follow this guide (http://www.londatiga.net/it/how-to-sign-apk-zip-files/)

[Q] CyanogenMod 7.0.3

Hi, this might be a very simple question and easy to answer but i just want to make sure i do it correctly as i am flashing CM7 for the first time, I am currently using Stock 2.3.4 rooted with unlocked bootloader.
My first question is that the file i download is update-cm-7.0.3N1-signed.zip, so do i need to rename the file to update or no need when flashing it?
Also with CM7 do i need to root the phone or its already rooted and i will have super user permissions?
Also is there a link where i can download the Google apps all together rather than downloading one at a time.
Thanks.
no need at all. just flash a clockworkmod recovery then select "apply zip from sdcard" after which you can select any zip file on your card.
it's rooted. plz find the link to gapps zip on CM wiki.
Or plz just read the update guide carefully plz thX.
//but CM 7.0.3 doesn't seem to be fixing the axis-flipping problem which is alright on 6.1.1
I cannot post external links here yet, but here your gapps are:

Just put a http before it

Trouble with ea24->eb28 OTA

I was messing around with some of the VERY FEW roms for my sprint tab, FUBAR'd it a few times using the alpha releases from various devs, and decided to wait until it gets more polished.
I successfully retrieved the base ea24 rom from the ea24 flasher tar file and flashed through heimdall. I screwed it up once( decided to fail on modem flash gg on emergency recovery), got it right the second time and now Im on ea 24. no FCs, etc.. BUT I cant get the ota update to eb28 so I can go to ef17. any reason why?
EDIT: and by cant "get" I mean the update notification NEVER shows.
also another question for the people passing through, anyone care to point me to a WORKING version of the beterthanlife GB roms for the sprint tab. I keep hearing about v1 being stable, but i cant find it anywhere( we all know for now v2 boot loops)

grab that file, save it to the root of your sd card as update.zip, reboot into stock recovery and flash update.zip then you'll be on EB28. From there, you'll want to do the same thing (if you want to get to stock GB) with this file

As far as the Better than Life rom.. V1 works, with the Stock kernel, not the ext4/CWM kernel.
Here's a link to V1:

[Q] Installing CWM

So I somehow I accidentally flashed a wrong recovery image on my Note when trying to fix my internal storage not mounting. I have lost the ability to flash .zip files since this build of clockworkmod is 4.x.x. or something. Is there a way to revert back to 5.x.x. Is there a recovery.img I can download somewhere ? Thanks
Get CF root kernel, it will push latest version of CWM
find it from first link on my signature
perfect! Thanks

[Q] Galaxy Note ROM Flash+CWM.zip root (confusion)

Hello,
I want to flash the Chimera 3.0 Rom to my Galaxy Note. Well, I already looked for many tutorials that couldn't help me.
I rooted it by using a youtube tutorial which I can't find anymore at the moment. But I remember downloading 3 files: cwm.zip, franco kernel and another zip file.
So, I read that if I flash a new rom with the cwm.zip installed, my phone will get bricked (which I obviously dont want to happen).
The more i read the less i understand Now i really dont know what to do...
At the moment, the original ICS 4.0.4 firmware is installed, and i didnt make any changes to the kernel (or maybe that franco thing did, im not sure).
Also, I didnt understand what to do first: flash new kernel or the rom? Because the kernel needs to be safe so that my phone doesnt get bricked.
Anyway thanks in advance!
P.s. sorry for my english, i'm german
You always need to be sure your ROM is running a safe kernel. The standard kernels from Samsung are NOT safe, i.e., if you do a full wipe/reset to factory settings, you can get your phone bricked. So, before doing that, you need to flash a kernel that works for your ROM and is safe. If you are using a Samsung ICS 4.0.4 ROM, I would suggest Speedmod K3-15 or Hydracore 5.4 kernels. Since you already have CWM installed, it's rather easy: download the kernel zip file to your SD card, reboot your phone in recovery mode (to access the CWM menu), select "Install Zip from SD card" and flash the kernel. Don't do any wipes, just reboot. Now you got yourself running a safe kernel. Confirm that by going into Settings -> About phone.
Spend some time reading the tutorials here on the forum. Trying new ROMs is nice, but bricking your phone is definitely NOT nice, right? So, make sure you understand the whole process and can make sure you are on a safe kernel before proceeding.

Stop using obscure tutorials - use XDA.
There are many threads here providing detailed and exact information.
Until now you should feel very lucky that you didn't brick your device.
Choose an up-to-date Rom here and follow the installation instructions provided in the thread - I do not know any Rom thread that doesn't give this hints.
cwm.zip, franco kernel and another zip file - after you told about the first two I do not really want to know the content of "another zip file". Delete them - they are old or dangerous.
Download some nice JB Rom here or switch to CM 10.1. You will like it and learn.
(You shouldn't be concerned about your language knowledge - it is far better than your device knowledge )
Ok, i installed the hydracore 7 kernel. what exactly am i supposed to do now?
so you on ICS and have hydracore kernel installed now ?
if yes, then place all the required files to install the rom on internal SD ( check OP rom thread for details)
boot into recovery and go to mounts & storage > format/system > format/data > format/cache. go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
go back and choose install zip from SD and select the ROM file
This worked for me, thanks!
Hi,
I'm currently running on ICS 4.0.4 stock ROM, I was wondering how to root and add CWM?
need much more info than that. which build of rom. use the philz kernel for your rom to root and CWM. follow his thread

[Q] (Ql Booting.img

how do I flash a new Booting.img though CWM... what I did was I made a backup of my custom rom then swapped the booting.img with new booting.img from withing my backup then flashed it but CWM said MD5 mismatch. Also tried flashing new booting.img in CMW advance options with no luck... how do I flash this guys?
Swapping files inside backup won't work at all. You need to create a custom update.zip with the boot.img you want to flash.
For what for you want to flash boot.img anyways? OC Kernel, stock rom, or something else?
oh right I see, so how do I create an update.zip for a custom kernal?
I think you can use the this update.zip which is originally a OC Kernel, and simply delete the one there, and insert your boot.img. I do not guarantee that this will work. Make a backup!
