[Q] Galaxy S or Nexus S? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi dear,
I'm going to get Galaxy S or Nexus S next week for myself and my gf(my gf's birthday is coming so I'm gonna sell my white iphone 4...)
Btw, I'm on the middle of the road.
I enjoy the internet browsing with my phone and watch youtube quite often. Also, I do video chat with my parent via skype.
But I saw on Nexus S the internet browsing is not as smooth as on galaxy s.
How is the performance on both devices?
and I read that galaxy s also have got 2.3.4 so now skype is working with video call. That is, Nexus S is not only the device can do video call via skype.
Please give me an advice guys! hope i'll hear many advice from here

Skype video is not supported on GS....but you can still install hacked version from smurf.
Overall not much difference between the two...pros & cons on both sides. Nexus enjoys advantage of google original Android and timely firmware updates...the choice is yours.

Thanks. That's right. Choice is mine but two devices are so identical apart from some factors..

I had both once. Nexus S seems faster despite my Galaxy S having a custom ROM.
I believe SGS has more developers. ( Going by XDA post count)

nexus S is faster because its AOSP and galaxy s not..
nexus S :
1. AOSP
2. Google product so always have first new upgrade Android OS
different think is the shape of Nexus S ... Its like banana ( I like ) but galaxy S is cheaper than nexus S..
both of them havent different hardware..

SGS III + Galaxy Nexus

So i saw on 4chan (i know it's a bad source) that they are making 2 new phones with some pretty awesome specs..

Nice story, but I doubt it's true . Why would Samsung go around and reveal something that's not their job to do (ICS and Nexus phone), and why would they talk about phone that should come out in august next year...
Don't know, little bit odd , but thanks for sharing....

the "Galaxy Nexus" is not a nexus phone! its a galaxy phone. trust me!
there are reasons why the nexus one isnt called HTC ONE NEXUS
or the nexus S not samsung s nexus.
WHY the Galaxy Nexus not a NEXUS phone is!
To all people thinking the Galaxy nexus is a nexus phone.
well no its not!
there i9s a reason why it never was a:
HTC ONE NEXUS
SAMSUNG S NEXUS.
plus a few facts:
the galaxy nexus was spotted running
2.4.1?
with a glassy blue green theme(doesnt that sound like touch wiz?)
no onscreen buttons like 3.0? the new screen size was deu to the on screen buttons right? well that was the most logical guess.
"s that he said the phone is running an Exynos processor clocked at 1.5GHz. We all know now that the next Nexus will run a TI OMAP chip"
(droid-life)
The CEO of Notion:
"Google will be releasing Ice Cream Sandwich in late October, OMAP devices will be the preferred platform (and receive the update before Tegra devices), and the Notion Ink will have the Adam updated by November."
even shows more that its probably not a nexus but a galaxy we are talking about here.
plus!
why would the galaxy III have better specs than the next nexus in such short release span?
there for.i say.
NO! its not a nexus phone.
but a galaxy phone!
I've been intending to comment on that rumor I read at phonedog. I didn't read your link but I was like, "yeah right" when they said the g3 was going to have 1080p at 60fps. That's the biggest crock of ****!
I'm no expert but considering how much data is being recorded at 30fps, to claim of double that rate is bs. I didn't do the math, but even if it were true, 32gb of storage would be eaten up in maybe 16 minutes or less. I'm thinking a lot less. Not only that, claiming a phone's hardware can handle the task is a joke too.
simple...
it all comes down to business
and as far as i can tell Nexus phones always hand technology a bit behind times packed, with new hardware for testing
is like a hybrid between new and old, but never all newest tech inside

Nexus Prime Wanted Features
So as many of us are busy speculating or patiently waiting for the Nexus Prime (or Galaxy Nexus), I thought it'd be a little bit fun to see what features (It can be non-feature breaking, but nice to have.) people would like to see on the next Nexus. I guess this is my way of killing time and counting down the days until I can get my hands on one myself.
My personal favourites would have to be a Notification LED, dedicated Camera button, and Samsung's (or Google's) BBM-alternative.
So, What's your mini/mega feature that you want to see in the next iteration?
It would be nice if it made me a coffee.

Highly doubt you'd Samsungs version of anything software wise on a Nexus phone, and that's fine.by me. I also doubt we will see a dedicated camera button because many people don't seem bothered by not having one(could be wrong here).
My biggest hope is that with all these variants that could be coming down the pipeline, that xda makes separate sections for each individual phone this go round.

[Q] S3 Mini vs. S3

Hi there!
I'm looking for a new phone to buy around februari 2013. I'm torn between the S3 and the S3 Mini. I listed up my Pro's and Con's beneath. Will there be as much xda software development for the S3 Mini as for the S3? I mean roms cyanogenmod, MIUI,.. All that cool stuff? I'm a huge android fan and love to root my android phones and customize them with custom roms
GALAXY S III MINI
Pro: Super comfortable size
Con: No LED-notification light, battery life, memory, no auto-brightness + how about android development?
GALAXY S III
Pro: everything is awesome + huge android development
Con: size
PS: I bought a Galaxy Note 7 months ago and it was way to big for me to handle, even when I used it for months.. It wasn't all that comfortable, so that's why i'm seriously considering a MINI over an S3... But I love the S3 in all other ways more (more features etc.).
Can you help me with my questions?
thanks!

about s3 mini hope with new update software 4.1.2 the notification led solve. if about software .
S III Mini
Honestly, the S III Mini is still a bit overpriced (at least in my country), tho I got it a few days ago and I really like it. Was a HTC Desire user, and was looking for a same size phone. This one has all the Desire lacked in terms of hardware, but the development is not that shiny because of the chipset. If you can find, S II would probably be a good choice.
I've been using the S3 Mini for about a month, and I'm quite satisfied with it! The thing is, the 4.1.2 Update was extremely disappointing, and there are very few devs out there supporting it! I've been thinking of taking up ROM porting, just because of that :silly: Anyway, I don't expect much from my effort...
Besides that, you have summarized pretty much everything considering these two devices. I would highly recommend that you buy the normal S3 if you want to install custom ROMs, and generally mess around with it.
i think s 3 mini will be great 4-6 month later , since we have not much hh owner+developer , and its diff version on each region..
i just hope there will be offcial CM.10.1 for this phone.. hope not too long
well ofc ill go s 3 if i want to choose which one the best... but i just cant afford the price lol
For me, I went out on a mission to buy a new phone, as my wildfire buzz' battery died and repair wanted £15 for a new batt'. Considering the buzz wouldn't even sell for that amount, new phone it is.
So I was going to get the S3 knowing about cm (but hating the size), and i saw the S3 mini. Looked up the hardware specs and bought it straight away.
Shame about the lack of updates and cm though
I wish I knew more about porting too.

I have an s3 mini and my father has an s3, imagine the old man trying to use it, he is about to sell it and buy an iphone. Anyway, the no led thing was the thing that bugged me the most, i solved it with bln mod from the xda forum, that makes the lights of the buttons to blink on new messages, but of course i had to pay.
On my overall experience (software, hardware, apps, size, etc) i will always choose the s3 over the s3 mini, the size is not that much of a problem considering that it almost doubles the mini in specs, mods and developing
I hope it helps you, my advice, don't buy an s3 mini

[Q] Are you happy with your phone?

I am about to order a new phone in next couple days and still thinking between Xperia and GS3. I know there is new generation of both coming soon, but I would upgrade anyway at the end of the year.
1. How is performance?
2. Signal quality?
3. Build quality?
4. Rom development?
Thanks for all your input!

Carrier-branded phones usually cannot be unlocked officially thru Sony's dev site. Get it from retail store and it's unlockable easily.
Tapatalked from my TX
1. How is performance?
Using wifi connection at home I do not find using the phone slow compared to a i5 desktop, so I would say great.
2. Signal quality?
Similar to my work BB Bold
3. Build quality?
Good, but I have not pressed the (power) button(s) lots as the phone is new, so usage is still low
4. Rom development?
I have nothing to compare it to, but the chaps here are all knowledgagable and Greg maintains a useful thread with links to many ROMs
I could get the s3 £100 over 2 years and maybe I would go for that (got this phone last week, and the s3 offer came on the w/e). But now I am happy putting that money towards the next upgrade.
Also this phone is a bit smaller, which is good.
Thanks to all, seems owners are quite happy with it which matters the most. I have seen some unfavorable reviews on the net, so that was a biggest issue for me. The only thing about this phone might be that the development seems a bit slow. I am used to switching between stock/cm/miui roms and first and last are not updated that often (we are still waiting for Sony's JB and MIUI is outdated at this stage), and generally the development thread seems not to be very active.
I switched from s3 to TX a few days ago. Sony's interface is fantastic and is 100x better than Samsung's touchwiz.
A minimal amount of bloatware and is very close to vanilla android IMO, anyone agree with me?
Development of cm in s3 with exynos are suffering many issues due to Samsung not providing sources to developers.
I don't like the jump from ics to jelly bean in s3, it seems like Samsung can't implement buttery smooth ui and just kept adding bloatware. Even galaxy nexus ui is faster than s3. Although multi window is nice.
Build quality is definitely better on Sony and TX feels like a premium while s3 got too much plastic.

Yeah, also the exynos exploit which a simple apk can root which was discovered by xda poster. Basically, there's no support for exynos devices but US s3 is fine since it uses Qualcomm chip.
Slow update by Sony is worth it I'm sure. Not some fast update by Samsung and HTC but crippled os and can't implement jelly bean properly IMO. Ics is fine also in Xperia and satisfied with it much faster than touchwiz lol
You should properly get a T if you want more development but for sure TX will get cm10 also.

[Opinion] nexus 4 vs S4

the nexus 4 is a great device, and im sure the Galaxy S4 will be nice also.
I realize this is a Nexus 4 forum, but my question is this; is the s4 a worthy upgrade from the nexus 4?
please shout off below, and I will give thanks to those who deserve it.
and there is a poll up top

that device is also pretty slick (maybe) so also give opinions on that phone too maybe?

By the time S4 becomes available the N4 will be over 6months+ old; this is a long time in phone tech these days.
For me the performance improvement isn't enough considering the time gap; just wait another few months for the real next gen.
Just ask yourself one question. Can you live without timely updates? Also, cyanogenmod devs are not going to be buying the s4. If I can find the source I will post it.

Agreed it's not worth it at all, I had the S3 and I am never going back to plastic. The only thing I would get is the One, and that's if it gets S-OFFed. Honestly, I am 100% happy with this phone, I'll wait for the next nexus before I even consider anything else.

Honestly I my self am not impressed with the new changes to the s4(meaning most of the "new" features could have been a software update on the s3). I've owned the entire galaxy line accept the note family and just switched to a nexus 4. Samsungs got a lot of bug issue within there phones as well as hardware issues Samsung has really began to become the iPhone of the android world honestly I would wait to see what Google has in the works in there upcoming press conference before making any decisions then you have the three to choose from being the HTC one s4 and maybe a Nexus 5. Coming from a previous Samsung user and the experience I've had with there products I would not go back and for me personally as well nothing beats stock android and always getting an update weather your phone is 2 years old or 2 months old. Well that's my 2 cents take it or leave it and have a blessed day.

Samsung needs to stop trying to re-invent the wheel. They are are adding too much crap to the phones in the form of Samsung made social media crap, media players and other proprietary software.
If they don't add clean simple features then people will lose interest. When I bought my S3 I was fumbling around trying to find out how most of the new features worked, only to find it cumbersome and counter-intuitive. What good are features if you never use them?

No new N7 anytime soon. Or Android update.

I'm sure some of you watched the keynote live today. I wasted 3.5 hours of my life watching that keynote. No new N4,N7, or N10. Not even another Nexus Q. But they did announce a galaxy s4 nexus which I could really care less about. Oh yeah, and no new android either. 4.3 or 5.0. Pretty dissapointed. Just pitting the info here on good ol' xda.

You already have a Nexus 7 which is still an amazing and powerful device. It's running on the latest Android OS available and yet you think your time has been wasted?
What about the time which was spent by everyone at Google who put that event together? They spent all that time and effort for people like you to still moan about things.

The new Galaxy S4 Nexus edition is pretty big news, in terms of what it could mean for the future of Android phones.
I'd rather wait and get a significant upgrade rather than have a half-arsed product be pushed out just so they have something to announce at the I/O (à la Apple)

I for one am happier that there is no new Nexus 7 or Nexus 4, because both of those devices still kick ass. Stop turning into such consumers. What you have is good enough. The day Google starts releasing the same device with a tiny upgrade with an S at the end of it, is when I'll leave for good.
4.2.2 does the job. Some people complain about lag but I've never had any. You're doing something wrong if you have terrible amounts of lag, or a faulty device. It's that simple. Also, if you're having problems with the device, such as with the battery and lag or whatever it may be, play around with it and fix it yourself. After all, that's why you bought a Nexus device, right?
The updates to Google Maps are massive and very important, as are the ones to Google Hangouts. Tons of work has gone into them. Learn to be a bit more appreciative. Even if some people did get what they wanted, they'd just likely want more two months later.
Please stop being ridiculous.

I'm sure it's just a temporary glitch. For now, get the apk from the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280184
N7.2 is needed to keep up with the performance of the N4. Now an N4 owner has settle for a tablet that is slower and lower PPI than the phone, or bump up to the N10 and accept the added bulk & weight.
Hoping for an N7.2 doesn't mean the N7.1 is not still a great device. What could be bad about getting an N7.2 with better specs for the same price as the N7.1?
I just wanted a new Android version (4.3, 4.2.3, whatever) so it would fix the issue with Nexus 4 wifi falling asleep and doesn't get notifications in time or able to answer wifi VoIP calls. It's a known issue since november 2012, and still not fixed in 4.2.2!
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=42272
Well for me, I have a N7 but I will be probably be forced to hand it over at the end of the month.
So I'll be a new buyer. If the N7 isn't announced then I'll be forced to wait or buy last years tablet again. It has to be close because we all know Apple will update their mini this year.
I agree the N7 is a great device. I just don't want to spend $200ish on a tablet and a better one come out a month later for the same price.
Ahh I was really hoping. I even did my ritual Android dance before work today.

I am just sick of my Nexus 7 being laggy. I really feel like 4.2 was some cobbled together kang of 4.1 that they beefed up with a ton of features and rushed it out to the nexus devices so they could have a new version of android for the nexus 4 and 10 announcement. Granted with my 4's dramatically better hardware, I don't notice any lag at all, but it killed my Nexus 7. I've tried several roms and kernels too and it's still laggy, worst when it's resyncing from sleep. Google now can be virtually unusable at times on it too, with my keyboard taking forever to appear and then the screen not registering my inputs on it.
I understand for fragmentation purposes it might be the right thing to focus on play store updates, and core google apps and services as well as developer tools to give everyone who buys an android device a great experience. But if they are done updating android for a while, they gotta at least fix 4.2. It's the buggiest version of android since honeycomb!

Have you tried any of the custom ROMs made for the Nexus 7? I've been extremely happy with SmoothROM.

Oh some people really do make me laugh.
You already have a Nexus 7 which is still an amazing and powerful device. It's running on the latest Android OS available and yet you think your time has been wasted?
What about the time which was spent by everyone at Google who put that event together? They spent all that time and effort for people like you to still moan about things.
What is the world coming to?

Not for me. The nexus lags like hell with horrid gpu rendering. I wanted that updated spec nexus 7. Google io sucked this year. I assume we will get less android updates now to limit fragmentation. I think 4.3 was nothing but a rumor and they are at least working on key lime.

All of the custom roms and.kernels have lag for me. This is my 2nd nexus 7 to. This thing needs a quad core + 2gb of ram.
Would everyone rather have Google be like Apple and introduce products MINOR changes to devices and throw on a "S" to the name or come out with new innovation? This years I/O was not a disappointment. Its not all about the "products".
