I just installed the FRG83D update on my Nexus One and rerooted using Rageagainstthecage. Everything's fine, except Clockworkmod recovery is replaced by the stock recovery every time I power down. I can get into Clockworkmod by installing it and booting directly to it, but it only works until I power cycle.
I read the thread about hot installing and permanently installing the recovery on the Evo. I assume there is a similar method for the Nexus, but I haven't been able to find any reference to it. Can someone point it out?
I'm trying to install 2.5.1.4, but the same thing happened with 2.5.1.0.
Thanks!

I assume the documentation you used to install your recovery wasn't complete. You have to remove two files from the stock ROM or it automatically reinstalls the stock recovery. You might re-read the instructions, you probably skipped or overlooked that part.

I do know how to read documentation. Neither the documentation at Cyanogenmod nor at xda-developers mention deleting files to make the recovery installation permanent. ROM Manager, which claims to automate the full process, also doesn't make that change. The Google search I did for "ClockworkMod install recovery permanent nexus" came up with nothing, and when I added either "delete" or "remove" to the search terms after reading your response, I got links to instructions for removing ClockworkMod and returning to stock recovery.
I vaguely remember having to delete some files when I rooted my G1 back in the spring, but not the first time I rooted the Nexus when I installed FRG83. I can't find any reference to that now.
If you could provide the names of the files to be removed, or (even better) a link to a thread that documents this part of the process, it would be helpful to me and anyone else who happens across this thread. Saying "I know the answer and you should have found it too" isn't particularly helpful.
If the answer to my question is obvious, I apologize in advance for being both obnoxious and dense. I spent an hour on the phone two nights ago with Verizon tech support on an unrelated issue, so I'm a little prickly at the moment about tech support people who start every call assuming the customer is an idiot.

Hello Guys,
I’m a Sprint HTC Hero owner who is trying to get CM 6.1
My device has the latest OTA update 2.32.651.2
I went ahead and tried z4root which has 2 options, temporary and permanent. Went ahead and did temporary and it stated that it was rooted. Superuser shows up in my apps, so I went ahead and installed ROM manager as a youtube video said (gave a full successful walkthrough)…I open ROM Manager up and it says – You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at “/system/bin/su” or “/system/xbin/su”.
Now using Astro File Manager, I checked those directories and it wasn’t there as ROM Manager stated, but in my SD Card, I see su-2.3.1-bin-signed…
Now my question is, should I try it with permenant root?
If not, what is the recommended next step?
Should I delete/uninstall everything I have that’s related to my previous root attempt and do the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
I’m an Accounting major and a noob at this stuff…and I see people helping each other out here which is awesome, but I get confused trying to keep up with some posts where people are sent to other posts and so forth :/
Thank u in advance! Happy Holidays!
-------------------------------------------
Below is the process on a step by step basis from which i was able to complete it with the help of skndeep102. Thanks again buddy!
-Download z4root here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
-Install and run app, press on Permenant Root
-Let it run until it says it has completed
-Once it has completed you will see the Superuser app in your drawer
-Download Rom Manager from the Market
-Open Rom Manager and press on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery at the top (give it a bit as it has to download it and then install)
I had already downloaded the CM 6.1 rom and had it on the SD card
-So i went ahead and hit reboot to recovery in ROM Manager
-Once it is in recovery, go ahead and scroll down to Nandroid and do a backup
-once you do a back up press back and reboot
-Once it starts up again head over to ROM Manager and select Install ROM from SD Card
-Look for the Rom, select it, and it asks you to Wipe Device and Cache, select both
-It reboots to recovery, select the rom and install
I hope i didnt miss a step, but thats pretty much it if i remember it correctly (spent much more time reading than actually doing, lol) Also, if there is something that isnt touched upon here just go ahead and read through as several questions were asked and answered along the way.
Hope it helps!
* Process confirmed to still be working as of 1/5/2011

i am in the same position...the recommendation to me was to RUU to an older version and then root. I am not sure how to do that, so im hoping someone has another solution.
I personally dont trust those one click root options. Manual root requires a little more reading but I have never had an issue that way.
You can always try the permanent option. I dont see why you wouldnt want permanent anyway. If you use the temporary, its gonna unroot you when you reset your phone.

Did the permenant root allow you to continue with the process?
RUU back to an older version just requires that you have the htc drivers installed and the ruu exe. You just double click the ruu exe and follow the instructions.

I'm in the process of trying it...its been stuck at Rebooting for a couple mins now... :/
Wait and see at this point, i guess...
OK so I did the permenant root...and appearantly it worked since z4root is telling me it is and it now gives me the option to re-root and undo root...Also, when I open Rom Manager, it isn't telling me to root the phone...
However, I saw in another forum that a way to check if it is rooted is to download a terminal emulator and type in "su" after the $ ...When i do that it tells me permission denied....
What next?

It says that I must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed to flash and restore roms.
Where do I get this?
Just a heads up, it seems the root works, the su file is in bin and i tested out drocap2 screencapture app and gave it superuser permission. Worked perfectly...now if i could know where to get ClockworkMod Recovery as the Rom Manager I got from the market did not bring it :/
Use the "un-option" and try another method. I installed a stock ruu on my phone this morning to update my prl and tried the same app. It doesn't flash everything you need like the "flash_image" file. You need that to flash a recovery. I just re-rooted my phone the same way I did back in July. Take note that I am with cellular south and all I had to do is run a batch file and oila, there I am sitting in recovery. If you want to try another "root via app" method, you can try this-->View attachment UniversalAndroot.apk .
Instructions:
Open app and root
Download Rom Manager(which you have) and flash cm recovery.
I still think it probably won't work, but you can try anyway. I think these "rooting apps" only do enough so you can use apps like "AddFree"(or whatever it is) and others like it.
EDIT: In Rom Manager, the very first tab(up at the top) should say"Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Press that one. It would ever flash for me until I went back to me nandroid.

quick question, performance difference between stock 2.1 and lets say most roms out there a huge difference?
anyone else care to throw some input into my situation?
Happy Holidays btw...
Just a heads up, what worked for me, once I was rooted and downloaded ROM Manager I had to install Superuser.apk, then when I tried to flash clockwork recovery I got the Superuser dialog box asking for permission, then select allow. another awesome program to help is Android Commander that you install on your PC and it provides a gui adb access but you have to have sdk and adb installed on your pc, but if you look around there is info about it available. hope this helps, wish i had more time but i was just home on my lunchbreak, good luck
So i downloaded ROM Manager / and Premium (because i really like what it does so i dont mind supporting him.
So when i go into the ROM Manager and tap "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" I pick the Samsung Captivate and it goes through and then says that it worked (version 2.5.1.2&2.5.1.1) and then i boot in recovery and i get the standard recovery, I try to reinstall packages and it says "failed" along with a bunch of red text, then goes back to the main screen. Is there another way to do this. or is something wrong on my phone?
I'm on stock 2.2 FYI
Feel free to ask questions and also if im just being stupid i dont mind also.
Thanks so much
-Allmaechtig
it helps if you tell us the error message. there are many
also im going to assume you are on 2.2 stock.. right? the error is signature verification
search for [Recovery] 3e Recovery Modded...... screw it,....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
once you have that fixed and temp flash the update.zip, you have to select "re-install" package 2 times in a row.
also once you have a custom rom that has a kernel with CWM built in. you dont need rom manager or the update.zip it downloaded. it will only screw you up. almost every custom kernel has CWM built in now.
yes the error is signature verification.
Thanks ill try that now an let you know if it worked
the instructions for 3e are a little confusing.
you can do it all with ADB or
you can do it all with Root Explorer

Thanks guys... So after three tries (I have problems with not reading the complete directions) i got it all working. first put in the /sbin next just the /system then i finally realized i am an idiot.
**Just a note for the next time i'm doing anything
I appologize in advance if I missed a thread addressing this. But here is my problem.
I'm running system version 5.6.890 stock rooted (thanks to the great folks here).
The next step I wanted to take was to install CWM Recovery and perform a backup. I downloaded ROM manager from the marketplace, installed it, selected Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. It worked and it now says my current recovery is ClockworkMod 5.0.2.6. The "backup current ROM" feature in ROM manager will not work, so I selected the "reboot into recovery" feature in ROM manager and all it does is reboot the phone normally.
How do I get the phone to boot into recovery? I know I'm missing something simple and I've tried searching the forum but I had no luck. Thanks in advance for your help, you guys have an awesome forum here and I've already learned alot, but the acronyms are kicking my ass!
You need a bootstrap, go into development section and look into the safestrap topic, read instructions and download
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
That's what I thought, and I actually read through that thread, but I'm still not understanding it. I guess I need a more detailed explanation on what exactly a boot strapper does and how to implement it. Is there some kind of noob "dummy" guide you can point me to that will explain all of the main things about rooting/recovery/roms etc? I wish there was an all in one explanation guide I could read that would clear up alot of my questions so I dont have to post a bunch of times. I keep reading threads but they are geared at people that already know the basic stuff, which in my case I dont lol.
Okay so I downloaded and installed bootstrap recovery. Hit "bootstrap recovery", granted it root access. Then hit reboot recovery and it rebooted into CWM recovery. But I cannot perform a backup, it says it can't mount SD card?
Try going to mounts and storage - mount sd card. See if that works for ya.

After more reading I really screwed up I think. I wish I would've went the safestrap route instead of CWM route. Now I'm stuck with a CWM install that won't let me perform a backup, and I have absolutely no idea how to uninstall the CWM recovery so I can safely install safestrap.
There are millions of android forums on the net and I've searched this forum up and down, searched google, youtube, and I'm more confused now than when I started! It's amazing how there is so much info out there yet nobody can ever put any of it into english. I can't find a straight answer anywhere, and it amazes me there are not stickies with step by step guides on how to do this stuff. I've never had so much trouble learning something in my life. How is a newbie supposed to pick this stuff up? I'm not completely stupid when it comes to this stuff, I have a decent understanding of how things work, but the acronyms on android forums are at higher level than anywhere I've ever seen. I just wish I could find some good write-ups that went into explanations about how things work.

If you want to use safestrap, just uninstall CWM bootstrap via settings -> applications -> manage applications. Install and open Hashcodes safestrap, click install recovery. It will take care of any files left over from CWM. Reboot hit [menu] at the safestrap splash screen you will be in recovery.

I know have a bone stock non-rooted phone that works again. I guess that installing the safestrap without removing files from CWM recovery install wasnt a good idea? You cannot use Rom manager, the CWM recovery that is uses isnt for the D3. If you go to the market there is a D3 bootstrap which installs the recovery and then you boot into recovery from the application. OR if you dont want to spend any $$ you can install Hashcodes safestrap.

There's a lot of info here, but I'm having a hard time making heads or tails of it. A lot of posts assume that you already know the lingo and basic tasks or modding an android device, and when you are brand new like myself it can be hard to understand a post if you don't know all of the terminology.

Easy:
First, you sould root your s7. = Superuser.
Then flash CWM via Adb
Easy too:
Flash a Custom Room with Root = Superuser so you have everything.
Theres no package with all in it, or?

That's one thing that's confusing! Do you have to root first before CWR? I've read so many How To's that my head is spinning as each one links to another and another and another. I don't want to brick my S7 either.
There a How To somewhere that sort-of states that if "whatever" isn't installed automatically, you'll have to download and install. After reading all these How To's and a few videos also with each not exactly the same, this doesn't seem real easy. Of course, I'm a sissy!
Yes, you need to root before installing CWR, otherwise its useless.

You dont need to root before installing CWM, in fact CWM is plenty useful even if you never root.
All you need is fastboot to install CWM.

But dont' you need the SU binaries installed to do such things as install custom ROMS?
SU can only be invoked while android is loaded. It requires android to be fully/nearly fully functional to work.
CWM bypasses anything on storage and directly reads/writes to it. It only requires that the NAND structure be correct (as in the partitions are in the right place and the bootloader is intact)
NVflash completely bypasses everything and only requires the device to be physically intact, it can load on a system with a completly blank/scrambled NAND.
There's a great deal of overlap between flash_image (which requires root) and CWM, but it's like popping in a rescue disk vs safe mode on windows, they do a lot of the same things but have different dependencies.
This is true for unprotected bootloaders like the S7 though. If your device has a protected bootloader/S-ON you do in fact need to be rooted to flash CWM.
On unprotected devices you can directly flash via fastboot and ignore any security in android proper.

Do you have any issues with the procedure provided in this link? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411193
It's essentially correct

Looking closely at the procedure, Drivers.zip isn't a file but a folder.
I've heard that some people have driver issues with the ones included in Fastboot+ADB.zip, but they're the stock ones from dell.
I'm not sure how directly installing the dell sync software would fix it as they're the same drivers. BUT I havnt had any issues with the ones in Fastboot+ADB.
Nor have I had anyone able to confirm it in a useful way that they dont work.
I first started to get an S7 directly from Dell to get the v3.2 HC but since their ETA was over a month away, I opted to get it elsewhere. It came with v2.2 and I OTA'd it to v3.2 on day one.
I "think" I installed some drivers to to use Dell Suite sync software but it would try to open but always with an error that closed it, so I gave up!
I have McAfee Security Suite, will that be a problem? Don't think it has a disable switch.

On my streak there was literally a file called "Drivers.Zip" which is the file I'm referring to. This is NOT the same as the drivers folders in the Fastboot+ADB file. Most importantly it includes 64-bit versions of the drivers. My understanding is that any Streak that ships with Honeycomb has this file. If you got an OTA update or installed a Custom ROM, you would need to get the file elsewhere. I'd be happy to post the version I have, but wasn't sure what the redistribution license is for those...
Rooting Streak 7 - Error in Superuser7.zip
I tried to post in the development forum because I thought my problem belongs to that topic. But as a new user I wasn't allowed to do that.
I flashed the CWM following the Guide. (BTW: Thanks for the great guide). However, applying the superuser7.zip I receive following message:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
E: Error /emmc/superuser.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted.
What is my failure?

First, post in general for something like that
Root your device with Gingerbreak
Gingerbreak
And if youre asking because its for gingerbread, do it. It will work if you have froyo on your s7.

My Drivers.zip folder contains: readme.txt, setup.exe, setup.msi and tetherxp.inf. All compressed files. What was in your driver.zip file?
