[Q] Copying files FROM cappy - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I am trying to copy files back from my Captivate to my desktop, Windows is very slow to start the copy, and when it does, gives me "Error 0x8007045D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." I have tried re-installing the x64 drivers to no avail, and Google queries only refer to defective external HDDs, which I'm hoping isn't the case. CHKDSK has been run, also to no avail.
Why will my Captivate not allow me to copy files back to my desktop, and what must be done to rectify this?
EDIT: This issue seems to only affect files that were copied to the phone in a previous session. Copying a file to, and then immediately from the device works fine (probably because the file hasn't actually been written to disk...)

USB Transfer Problem. Help!

Hi all, can anyone sort this -
When i connect via usb i choose 'disk drive' to transfer files/music etc to the phone. Everty time i try to transfer anything it says on the PC (windows xp) 'cannot copy xxxx - the path is too deep'
Has anyone else had any problems or does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
My first reaction is to say that wherever you're trying to copy from or too has a long pathname. Are you trying to copy individual files or whole folders, and where are you trying to copy from/to (e.g. My Documents)?

It doesn't matter how long the filename is it still says it. I've tries individual files and full folders but still the same. And i've tried copying from/to all sorts of different places but still no joy???
Hmmm. Maybe the way that Windows is transferring files is malfunctioning. This is definitely an advanced problem, which requires an expert.
*Waits for expert*
First of all, try another USB port. If that doesn't work, try this, in order. stop after the diamond works:
1- uninstall/reinstall activesync, then try accessing files with it.
2- Stop the Diamond usb drive by clicking the safely remove device icon. Then plug it again.
3- Uninstall all USB Root hub in your windows device manager, then reboot computer.
4- Hard Reset device.
5- Reinstall Windows
6- Return Device.
Can you try moving a file name with 8 chacters or less from your c:\ to the phone? Eg c:\song.mp3 to your phone
Also, what OS are you using? What file system does the phone 'disk' show up as in windows?

It shows as fat32. ?
this simply means the files are under a folder tree with too deep or too long with characters. such as:
C:\My Documents and Settings\Andrew Loh\Documents\my structural folders\andrew loh\scanning\pdf\finanacial documents\banking stuff\hong kong bank\bank statement\date 2008-06-09\page 1\200806091211224412.pdf
Simpliest thing first.....take your diamond to another computer.....confirm if it's computer problem or diamond problem

It seems related to FAT system I guess.
Could you try to format the disk from PC when connected as DISK mode and try to copy file or folder again?
This might be helpful.

Right - i've tried to transfer files from a different pc via 'disk mode' and it worked fine.
I can transfer stuff from mine via active sync but it takes ages transferring albums etc. It must be some setting on my computer causing the problem, although i don't have problems transferring things to sd cards etc. Any ideas?
For the love of God...
Hi All,
This seems like a very old problem but as far as I can tell, was never resolved or someone didn't share their solutions with the rest of us lovely newbies!
Unfortunately for me I am now having the same problem and after searching the forums it led me to this thread (along with two others that didn't have any difinitive answers either). When trying to copy anything that is within a folder from my comp (be it from a partitioned drive or the desktop of the root C: drive) I get the error "Cannot Copy ****ath is too deep".
After much trawling on the internet I found some third party software that should have solved the problem. No such luck , when using that I get a "semaphore timeout error". Next I try to direct extract from a .rar file to the internal memory and it tells me the reason it can't complete is that "the disk may be full".
As it stands now; I've formatted my phone's internal storage (and then had to transfer all programs one by one back over from my comp), enabled DMA transfer from the Device Manager in Windows XP and still no luck at all.
Could someone please shed some light on this as (as you could probably tell by the long winded post) I'm at my wit's end with this despite loving the phone in general!
Cheers in advance,
Night
I also have the same problem,
When i use activesync, big files like movies can only be put on the device itself, not the internal memory of 4g.
When i use the diskdrive option, the computer sees it als an usb storage, but files cannot be transferred, because of the "path is too deep" error.
in dutch it is called "pad is te lang", any options?
Also does someone know where to buy the official extended battery in Holland, because bol.com cannot deliver and other sites are way expensive.
Ok, just fixed it.
I turned off the activesync software in windows.
Connected the device to my usbconnector on the back of the pc (a 2.0 usbdrive)
Then it worked! Now 755 mb of .mp4 movie on the device...
i dont know if someone still got such a problem. I got it today and solved it with flashing an other rom on it from the Ruu.

i had that problem too and nothing helped me...i fix that with easy solution----just try another usb port on your pc...that work for me

Can not delete/ rename files through explore or on device. Unable to synchronize.

Heres a strange one.....
Just recently tried to sync my MDA Compact 4 and got the following error message:
"Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSync Troubleshooter in Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer."
On investigating further, i tried the following suggestions:
- Turned off all firewalls
- Removed partnership between phone and pc (on both the phone and pc)
- Unchecked "Enable advanced network functionality" in USB to PC settings on the phone
- Reinstalled Activesync 4.5 (and also a tried a repair)
- Different USB cable and USB port (not using a USB hub)
- Several soft reboots
and finally tried a different PC just to see if i could get a guest partnership! Guess what? Same error message.
I am, however, able to explore the phone with activesync but only explore. I cant change file names, add files or delete.
On even further investigation, i've now also discovered that i cant delete/ rename files on the phone itself (using file explorer on either the device or internal storage). When i do, i get the following message:
"Cannot remove/ rename etc: Access is denied.
Be certain that the folder/file is not write-protected and is not currently in use"
(Even creating a new folder and then immediately trying to delete it gives the same error)
If i connect the phone to the PC as a disk drive though, i am able to delete files just fine. Add new files, rename them etc....without any problems.
This leads me to believe that the problem is with Windows Mobile!?!
Has anyone else experienced the same/ similar problem and figured out how to fix it? (Other than perform a HARD reset/ Clearing the storage)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
UPDATE:
I found this on the Microsoft help forum.
Although it hasnt fixed my problem, it might help someone else who is having the same problem.
1) soft reset device
2) Start / Office Mobile / Word
3) Create a new document (click on New)
4) type some text (just plain text - no formatting - it was 'plain text document') just a few characters
5) File / Save As...
6) I have selected type 'Plain Text'
7) It asked me whether I want to save it at 'Word document instead' - I clicked No.
8) I have powered off the device and did soft reset
9) Start file explorer, find the file (it was in My Device / My Documents), click on it - it opens Word again.
10) Add some formatting (I have selected part of text and changed font to bold)
11) Close Word - it asked whether to save it in Word format - this time I said Yes
12) Power-off the device and press soft reset again
Also, i noticed that i am able to modify any DOCX or TXT file within Mobile Word (and even delete them) just not from File explorer on the device or Explore within ActiveSync.
Can anyone help???
Same problem with different model

You're not alone. I have HTC Touch Pro (ie. Raphael) with exactly the same problem and I've also already tried that "Word-solution" several times without any help. However I can synchronize with my exchance server via 3G. I can also add/remove/rename files if I use some of the Office mobile applications, but not with file explorer.
Getting sooooo frustrated, but still not willing to do the hard reset.
Do both of you by any chance have Fsecure Mobile installed? Just trying to narrow the cause for the problem.
Same Problem Here
I have a T-Mobile Wing and I'm having the exact same problem. Anyone figure out whats up yet? It's so strange that I can delete/remove files and folders through active sync, but I can't through the device file explorer. I have also tried creating a folder with the file explorer, but then I cant delete, move or rename it.
Here's something that might work for you, http://www.24hsoftware.com/How-To/this-device-is-restricted-from-downloading-this-file-type.html
Unfortunately it hasn't work on any devices that I've seen but then again, I'm still thinking that F-secure mobile is causing the problems in our devices. F-secure has confirmed that they have heard about the problem and are investigating it.
This is very interesting as in the past 24 hours my Xperia X1 has started to do the same, I can create files ok but am unable to remove/copy files.
I am using f-secure mobile security, so it would seem there is an issue there. I'll fire an email to them to get myself on a fix list when it comes out if that's the problem!!
Any news on this issue?
I am using a trial version of F-secure mobile (on my SE Xperia, a sort of HTC ). Now, out of the blue I am experiencing similar problems:
- not able to connect to pc via Active Sync
- not able to delete/rename/copy files on both internal as external memory
- programlist appears empty
Did anyone try to remove F-secure to solve the problem?
Thanks.
I just got a reply from F-secure. They have identified the problem and are expecting to release a new version of the client within next two weeks.
Hopefully that's the end of this...

Updated client was published on last friday.
I am experiencing a very similar problem on my HTC HD2 with wm6.5. If I connect the phone as USB mass storage i can copy files as much as I want to on the SD card, however when I disconnect the cable after copying WM6.5 cant read the folder sometimes.
Othertimes when I connect the phone as Activesync and start to copy some files, it stops half way through, sayign "access is denied". if that happens I cant transfer any files anymore, it will always give same error until some time passes, few disconnections, restarts, no consistency, no definite workaround. The strange is when it gets into this "access is denied" mode I can still browse the device (storage card) and create and delete folders. very-very frustrating.... did a few soft and hard resets, reinstalled activesync couple of times, still no joy...and i dont have any FW app on my device...
thanks.

Win7 upgrade after HDD upgrade?

I installed a new 120 GB hard drive with no problems. I already purchased a copy of Windows 7 HP not Pro or Ultimate. Should have but didn't, too late. Anyway, I did the upgrade and now can't get the shift to recognize my external DVD drive as a bootable source. What do I do now. Is it possible to take a DVD copy of Win 7 and put it on a USB drive and create an iso file? Is there another way to get my shift to boot from a DVD that I am not aware of. I only get the option of booting from the new hard drive which is blank. I really don't want to have to buy another copy of Win 7 as a download. Is there a link to still download the Win 7 rc file? Any help would be great.
Alright, got windows 7 mounted to a usb drive and installed on the Shift but now I can't seem to get any of the drivers to install. I just get a error message about not being able to open the zip file.
are you in windows 7 ?
If you are in Windows 7, and you copied the drivers from HTC over to your device, copy them again from your device to another folder on your device, then start driver install.
Copying files from a remote source often blocks the files.
Then, if you are in Windows 7, there's a particular order to install the drivers, i gather you have discovered this yourself already.
Not being able to open a zip file. Try unzipping all the drivers on another computer then and copy them to your shift, then move them to any other directory on your shift (to release the files)
Windows 7 really works like a charm on the Shift. I don't know if your version has AERO on it, I hope so as even with aero it's really fast.
Yes, I finally figured that out. Unzip them first then install them. Sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees. I was then having problems with wifi, 3g and bluetooth. I accidentally tried to install the control center drivers with the compatibility mode set to xp accidentally. Everything is working great now. Sometimes I need to slow down a little.

Why does the SW Upgrade show "Cannot open binary file"?

Hello there, I tried restoring my sprint galaxy tab using SW upgrade and i can't just figure out why it shows this below:
could be a windows error?
hey
do you have a solution to this "windows's error"?
+1
I've been having the same problem on both Win& 64bit and 32bit machines. After several tries and searching around the forums I even tried unzipping the "SPH-P100.EA24.SECURE.REV07-FULL_CL871413.tar.md5" file in the binary folder before using the GUI again but it still doesn't work. Installing via heimdall has been a no go as well. I don't know how to use Odin, so I haven't tried that.
I'm having major issues getting my camera and gps back after playing with the CDMA Honeycomb 2.5 build and it would be nice if I could get this to work. My Titanium backups aren't fixing the issue either.
I bought this as a toy (the W00t sale) to learn about android and I am definitely getting schooled.
Same issue
I'm getting the same error. It looks like the program can't find the binary file that comes with the download. Does it have to be in a specific directory? I've tried c:\, c:\Program Files, c:\Program Files (x86) and my desktop.
Anybody figured this out yet?
I ended up flashing with the Odin version from this post. The zip includes a text file with instructions on how to use Odin.
It worked for me and fixed my camera problem.

Reinstalling on/thru new computer questions

I used a different computer way back when I initially installed Android (first CM9, and I have since moved on to RandomROM Falcon and now SGA's Fat 'n Creamy). I have a new laptop... do I need to install all of the files initially used to root the TouchPad onto my current laptop? If yes, which files do I need to re-install?
Since I also need to go from ACME2 to ACME3 to go to a JB ROM, which files, if any, do I need on the laptop?
Thanks in advance!
You'll need to grab the "universal novacom installer" which will install novacom for you. And also get the palm drivers by plugging in your touchpad while booted into WebOS. You can get ACMEInstaller3 from goo.im/devs/jcsullins

You have to have a "palm, inc", with whatever files you had in the original install (novacom, novaterm, acmeinstaller 3, etc.) the directory doesn't have to be named "palm, inc", just name it something that you remember and you can cd to it, for the command prompt commands you're going to be typing in.
I would do a titanium backup of the user files and save that to the pc. Then do an acmeuninstaller. Once that's done, install android again, using acmeinstaller 3. There are several good how to's here in the forum. Once you have android installed again, restore your user apps.
Good luck.
Thanks SGA and chicle.
I just went ahead and copied the Novacom files from Roland Deschain's YouTube notes, which created the Palm folder to my computer with the novacom.exe, novacomd and terminal folders and then copied over the ACMEUninstaller, ACMEInstaller3 and ACMEInstaller2. I think I must have the drivers I need on the laptop since a week ago I was able to connect up my TP and drag a few backup ROMs over to my laptop.
Good suggestion on using TiTu to backup data and copy to the laptop. Previously I flashed new ROMs over without worrying about data backups (i don't download much to my TP, mostly use for browsing, email, and YouTube.
Weird having to basically start over and reinstall Android on the TP again. Must be a moment or two of "held breath", hoping everything installs and boots up again. But I am hoping to try out SGA's Slim ROM so I will definitely take all the necessary steps (Nandroids, wipes, etc).
