I was most recently running Andromeda 3 (Froyo 2.2) when I decided to upgrade to Gingerbread. I intended to go to Cognition 5 v2 (This tread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127578). Step one was to be on Gingerbread and because I was running Froyo, I followed the link (This thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127249) to flash Gingerbread stock.
Using odin3 v1.81 and the zImage-root.tar file, I put my phone into download mode, installed rebooted and then added the kernelKF1.tar file. The Cappy rebooted and I was running a rooted stock 2.3.3. This is where the main problem lies. Step two for Cognition was to use Clockworkmod Recovery to flash the new kernel – usually extremely easy but this time I received an error (see below). I believe the error is because I was upgraded to Android System Recovery <3e>, which produced an error anytime I try flashing clockwork recovery mode or using the update.zip method.
The error is “E: failed to verify whole-file signature. E:signature verification failed. Installation aborted”.
I tried to use the “2e recovery” method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804226) however, Odein3 v1.81 receives the error:

At this point, I’d be happy just to be able to go back to a Froyo cooked ROM but cannot.
Current:
Firmware version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I897UCKF1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I897UCKF1-CL273832
Build number: GINGERBREAD.UCKF1
Step 2 ... use the Odin to flash the latest Cog Kernel (use the .tar kernel) then Step 3. Don't use the .zip kernel. Don't use Rom Manager.
And last, get a fire extinguisher, ... U should have posted this in Q & A. So u may get flamed.

I've encountered the same problem as you do too. It's due to "not sure why".
But, it's fixed by below:
Download, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127249
It's Odin 1 Click to STOCK Gingerbread Captivate.
Turn ON the Odin 1st.
Make sure your phone haven't plug into the PC and make sure your phone is OFF.
After that, CLICK and HOLD the VOLUME UP + DOWN BUTTON. Then, plug in the USB that's connected to your PC.
Once you see the Odin recognize your phone, quickly click START! If you got too slow, you'll not able to flash. PLEASE BE FAST.

Will I be able to flash using CWM after flashing v2 Kernel with Odin?
Update I see that it does give me clockworkmod recovery 4.4.
Update to the update
I'm up and running Cog 5.2 and loving it. I was having a ton of issues with Odin but in the end, I flashed Eclair stock, then Gingerbread stock, KF1, Kernel 2, then Cog through CWM (that was put on during the Kernel 2 update it seems).
Thanks for the help and sorry for posting in the Dev instead of Q&A.

On a side note Avoid using 1 clicks with bootloaders. With I897 GB bootloaders there isnt need to downgrade back to eclair bootloaders. So look around there are a ton of 1 clicks and firmware packages with out the bootloaders. It only flashes for a split second but might as well reduce the risk even more ^^ best of luck with cog 5

so i just put on the leaked THROUGH ODIN froyo onto my captivate, and i thought yeah its nice but its not as snappy as the other roms
so i put my phone into download mode and get ready to flash it back to stock so i can put on cog or assonace or w.e. i choose
but now my computer (Windows 7 32) won't recognize the phone in download mode anymore! its retarded i don't understanddddddd
first it works now it doesn't. it used to recognize it but now USB DEVICE IS NOT RECOGNIZED or whatever bull**** it spits out...ive uninstalled and installed and restarted and registry cleaned my computer a billion times...
anyone else?
You can try reloading your drivers. sometimes it helps. Or a different usb port. BEFORE you flash back.....you can swap the kernel from dg's cognition 2.3b8 into your phone.....works WONDERS for general snapiness...BUT...the 2.2 leak renders your bluetooth pretty useless......havent tried it since the kernel swap.....anyone know if the kernel swap effects bluetooth? Anyway...entertain the thought
i kno u can change the kernel but i really want to get the bloatware off and voodoo and everything and have a quadrant of OVER 9000!!! lol
but seroiusly wtf samsung...whats going on
I gave up on samsung updates about 3 days after I got my phone. I see a lot of complaining about the bloatware....i personally dont see the big deal....its 5 or so apps and you can just leave them buried in the app folder and install the things you actually use on your home screens...just my 2 cents. BTW voodoo DOES come with the kernel swap...and its awesome!
okay i got the computer to recognize the phone

yeah i've used it to every extreme today haha i have a few odins
one to get to stock JH6
one thats a fix for the 3 button combo and stock JH6 (where you have to manually load the pda and pit
and the one that flashed me to the leaked 2.2
the only one that works it the leaked 2.2, but i want to get back to JH6 so i can flash it to the new perception
i don't think redownloading odin will work because i have them all saved in different folders...
I am not sure how to fix your odin problem, but you can swap kernels, then try to flash perception through clockwork.
Just a thought

Just a suggestion...try using a different usb cord. after it wrote "daemon started successfully" it went "OK" and then "waiting for device"... and that's it now its not responding and i dont know if i should unplug the device ot retry or whatever...
Before i tried using One click lag fix but it prompt "item could not be found" and said "root was successful" but it wasnt so "successful" according to titanium backup.

Go get your firmware from the stock thread in general or one of Ramad's pre rooted firmwares. Follow the instructions to flash. You just need to reflash, it'll work out just fine. Then worry about kernels.
Speed mod kernel is what worked best for me in FroYo to lag fix and root, I recommend it highly.

is there anything i can do?

i got into download mode what can i do now? im really nervous, where can i find the instructions to flush.
im on download mode right now, can i turn of the device without bricking it?
This happened to me once, don't panic. Take out your battery, plug in your phone to the charger and use the 3 button combo to get into download. You can repair from this screen. The phone ! Pc is only a soft brick.

First, thanks for your help dude,
I thought the phone is dead, but i said lets try one more time before i go to fix it somewhere.
Now im in download mode, can i flash rom with a tar file i have, its a stock rom of the company i bought it from, i need other file then .tar or the .tar is enough?
can i plug it to the charger while in download mode?
No problem buddy.
If the tar is a full rom, flash it as a PDA with no other files. Make sure repartition is not checked.
You can plug it in, but there is no over charge protection so make sure it doesn't overheat for too long. You do need the battery to be over 65% though, to flash safely.other than that, flash normally. Tell me if you need instructions on flashing.

get my device to download mode.
open odin v1.7, open the tar file as PDA

Is there anything else i have to do?
OK i installed JVQ stock rom and its working
I thank you very much my friend you helped me alot.
now i wanna install semphore kernel, how i do it via odin?
Make sure to kill all kies processes in the task manager before starting. Make sure you have the usb drivers installed. Also start and get odin ready before plugging in your phone in download mode.
That's about it, you should be fine.

Download, use Odin to install
Hi,
I managed to brick my Samsung Galaxy S I9000M.
Was locked on Virgin network (Canada) and I was trying to root the phone and then unlock it.
But something didn;t work properly (or I made a mistake) and now the phone keeps rebooting. I can go into Download mode but nothing more.
This is what I did:
1) I installed Odin 1.85
2) I started ODIN as admin, I pressed on PDA and then I selected a zip folder called
"CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVO-v3.2-CWM3RFS"
3) This is what ODIN was showing:
<ID:0/003> Added!!
<ID:0/003> Odin v.3 engine (ID:3)..
<ID:0/003> File analysis..
<ID:0/003> SetupConnection..

<ID:0/003> RES OK !!
<ID:0/003> Completed..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)
<ID:0/003> Removed!!
5) So after waiting 5-6 minutes (in this time the phone was rebooting up to the Samsung logo) I turned off the phone and I have tried to start the device. But is not starting anymore, it keeps rebooing.
Now I don't know what to do to fix it.I know that I made a big mistake, I was not supposed to do something without knowing what I'm doing...But now it's too late, I have to fix it.
Note: The phone was running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
if its in boot loop then look like it's only softwoer brick.
so if you can get in to download mode by 3 bouten combination greate you can try to reflash (I will try all so to redownloading the files)
if not than you must find a JIG or some one with a JIG to get in to download mode and reflash.
The version of CF-ROOT you selected is not compatible with the version of GB (UGKG3?) that was on your phone.
If your phone had UGKG3 installed, there are very few rooted kernels available for it.

Yes, I can go into download mode.
How can I reflash the phone ? Which kernel should I use ?
Sorry but I'm new in this.
If you give me some links that will be great.
I don't want to aggravate the situation .
If the OP has/had UGKG3 installed, I have found that to be the oddest ROM I have used to date on my phone.
It does a lot of things differently.
I made another post on here where I attached a basic rooted kernel for the UGKG3 ROM. Let me go find it and link to it.
Again, this is assuming it was UGKG3. Ma Bell has only released one GB ROM for the GT-i9000m, so I think it's a safe bet that's what the OP was running on his Virgin branded phone.
EDIT: Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21655532&postcount=492
This will give you a basic rooted kernel, no CWM or anything else, just root.
You'll also need to download Superuser from the Market.
Thank you.
Now how should I install that kernel?
I suppose that after I reflash the phone it will start normally and then I can go to the Android market and install Superuser from there?
Is there a link with instructions (Step by Step guide)?
Sorry, but I dont have too much experience with this.
Thanks a lot!

Either you flashed stock ICS, flashed that KJ1 file in odin, and you went back to Gingerbread (in that case, what happened? were you able to boot up? cause of different bootloaders) or you did NOT flash stock ICS and that file you flashed (KJ1) is an already, very old stock Gingerbread rom.

You can get the CF-Root kernel from Chainfire's thread and flash it using "already rooted.bat" method described in post #2 of said thread..

Dear All,
Need urgent help..
I have my brothers Samsung captivate from AT&T .. which was unlocked...
I Rooted it, Installed clockworldmode recovery, and installed ICS image..
Everything went smooth but In ICS i was not able to use mobile network.. So decided to restore the backup which i had taken before flashing ICS.. But whiling restoring from recovery it failed... And i was able to go to only Download mode after that...
But then i decided to flash stock image using ODIN which was also failed and after that i am not able to enter download mode...
When i connect cable, Phone and PC icon comes with exclamation..
Thanks

Make sure the connection is good. Make sure, if on desktop, you use a rear usb port. Last, this is something I do not sure if it helps or not, run Odin as Admin.

I was able to unbrick the cell using onc click unbrick method.. Now i can go to download mode by pressing volume up + down and connecting microusb cable..
If i Boot normally then it will show AT&T screen and will get stuck over ther
If i try to boot to recovery ( I had flashed clockworkmod recovery) then It will display AT&Screen for few seconds and goes off and again comes and goes of.. and this continues...
I am not able to use odin to download any image.. I dont know how to proceed now..
Is it possible to flash clockwordmod recovery from download mode ?
Thanks
Since u can get into dowload mode, u have gotta use an Odin or Heimdall Stock One Click or use other Stock Firmware through the regular Odin or Heimdall to get u back.

I have already tried with Odin and Odin one click method..
I have already mentioned the error in ma previous post... And with Odin one click nothing is happening..
I have put one downloading mode and opened "Odin one click" exe file, one window comes with two buttons start and clear..and empty button n boxes
When you press start , it prints all thread completed in a second and nothing happens..
Gona try with Heimdall stock method now...

Hi, sorry for the late reply.. I was able to recover my device using
[AT&T][UCKB2]Heimdall One-Click -Total Stock
Now I am running stock Froyo .. So should i still install without bootloader Gingerbread KK4 image ???
Coz i guess right now i am having Froyo boot-loader if i am not wrong...
And second question.. right now in Froyo there is no option to install unknown sources.. That option is not there in application settings menu...

You probably just flashed froyo boots, so the GB ones would be necessary for GB.
And yes, stock froyo doesn't allow unknown sources.
