Ive been flashing roms for some time, though this is my first attempt on the captivate.
Followed the instructions np.
Using rom manager backed up my stock rom.
made sure it saved to sd.
used titanium made sure all apps were backed up.
downloaded cogs newest version.
opened rom manager selected flash for captivate.
turned phone off.
rebooted into rom manager
wiped phone via directions.
selected cog via sd card
now Ive been sitting at the installing update window for roughly 20 minutes without the progress bar moving at all...
any advice?
I did just do a battery pull and it seems that im back to att stock. No rom.
ive just tried running it again and I just sit at installing update...
I did have ryan zas oclf on prior and I dont know if I removed. however since Im back to stock now shouldnt it be gone?
Wouldnt be able to prevent it now would it?
Been there done that
Usb debugging, enable it
Simple mistake man, no big deal
From a phone
Well turning on usb debug wasnt it but i did reinstall oclf and it shows its still active batteries just to low to remow waiting...
Ok any othet ideas? Oclf says its not inthe one running its a different one. Guess ill try to reflash agafin and install anyone else got an idea?
Finding
opening
installing
then it just sits forever
anyone?
Try to download the file again, it may have been corrupted during download
Edit...not clear are you booting into recovery, selecting the rom zip file, etc or actually rebooting phone and going into rom manager?
You need to boot into recovery and select the zip there if you are not doing it that way
Correct im in recovery and selecting it.
Download the stock ODIN 1 click and flash that then re-root and install ROM manager and then flash COG
sadly ive done this also.
used odin one click last night went back to stock then rooted again and tried and it still just sat at the installing line for an hour.
something is not working and I cannot figure it out.
1. make sure you move the zip (as you downloaded it, don't unzip) to the root of your sdcard.
2. open rom manager, flash CWM if you haven't already.
3. using rom manager, backup your current stuff under a name you'll recognize
4. turn off phone. boot into recovery
5. if it shows the 2e or 3e recovery, choose the 2nd option: "install update.zip", this should open up CWM recovery
6. from CWM recovery, go down to "install zip from sdcard"
7. then: "choose zip from sdcard"
8. then you select the zip that you moved to your sdcard in STEP 1.
that should do it.

every step done. Even a odin flash to stock prior. Locks up every time at installing update, it will sit there all night.
Thought I was reading on Cog's latest build a few people having issues installing using the latest ROM Manager and CWM.
I think this is the older version of the update.zip and maybe it will install Cog.
Also you can bypass the whole rooting/dowloading ROM Manager prior to flashing if you use this update.zip.
Odin 1-Click back to stock.
Put in the update.zip to your SDCard
Reboot into recovery.
Run the update.zip under recovery.
It will do a short reboot back to the screen.
Run it once more and you should be in Clockwork Recovery advanced menu.
Attempt to install the Cog.zip again and see if it works.
Unfort I'm running Assonance's latest build and didn't run into any issues.
Going to try it in a bit.

Check out the wiki thread for adam's Axura ROM. The process should be the same, just use the ROM of your choice. I'd try another download/different ROM, there may be an issue with your download, or a bug in the ROM possibly?

I screwed up before by forgetting to move the zip to the root of my sdcard. I don't quite understand why this is necessary, but I can confirm that it is.

Two suggestions - not sure if you've already attempted these.
1. Have you tried flashing an older version of Cognition? Possible that there is just something silly about your setup that is preventing you from flashing this specific version.
2. Along the same lines, have you tried flashing to Cognition using one of the Odin flashable ROMs? I'm personally a bit mystified by these, but I'm just a wimpy Mac user.
Older versions of Cognition here.
The version of CWM rom manager downloads should be okay. A master clear and stock fhlash should help

Hi,
I really need some help as I began to get crazy about this.
I also have to mention it's my first time into Root/Mod/Custom/etc...
I Have a GT-I9000M (BELL) with Android 2.2 (version FROYO.UGJK4) Kernel 2.6.32.9
I successfully Rooted the phone with Superoneclic (Have Super User app in menu)
I Installed Rom Manager 3.0.0.0 Then authorized sudo when prompted to do it.
After that in the recovery menu of Rom Manager i've downloaded the Clockworkmod thing. (2.5.1.2)
I've tried to boot into clockworkmod but I got the standard Recovery Boot from Samsung instead. (tried to re-install rom manager to see if work but no)
I also tried to install it by using the update.zip version got here http://www.multiupload.com/5CUIK88JM0 and put it at the root of the internal sd.
Booted into the Samsung Recovery Boot and press apply Update.zip then i got
the following error:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborded
(Tried Twice still nothing new)
The goal of all this is to install Darkys_v6.0_Gingerbread_Edition_Voodoo_signed seen here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
What do I do wrong???? Help me please i'm tired of the Android Froyo version from Samsung+Bell
To get ClockWorkMod compatibility, you need to use ROM Manager to start them.
This way, Voodoo recognize it's CWM recovery, intercept the call to the update.zip and install Ext4 wrappers.
If the new version is not yet available in ROM, be patient
I found the recovery app doesn't work very well. I suggest installing a kernel with CWM , that's compatible with Bell hardware? via Odin and you're good to go. From recovery menu you can do anything, including a full backup.

Sorry dude, the only solution would be to flash to an Eclair ROM (which by default has a 2e recovery) or flash Froyo which is supported by CFroot.
I have the same issue as well. Wanted to try Darky's v6.0 rom, however stucked in getting to CWM since I'm on 3e. I did look at CFRoot, but nothing stated for JK4.

Ok well I got a good night of sleep so i'll resume where I am
I learned yesterday the following:
CMW: Clockworkmod
OCLF: One Clic Lag Fix
Now what I could try is to get back to Original Firmware of the GT-I9000M (Eclair) and from then what I've understood is that I don't need 2e recovery? Am I right?
From then I could install Darky without anything.
By going back this way will i'll stay root of will I have to root again?
If all this is right, how do i go back to eclair? can it be done via the 3e recovery menu or I have to flash? Is so I don't know anything about odin and the way it work so i'll need your help loll

here's what I did now:
Used Odin and Flashed my firmware to the previous one (2.1 Eclair.UGJH2)
Re-rooted
Re-installed Rom Manager
When in recovery mode i see 2e but it's the recovery from Samsung. Can't see the CWM......
Think i'm pretty close compared to yesterday from Darky 6.0 but STILL NEED CMW lolll
Fist timer Root and Flash never easy lolll
OK GUYS GOOD NEWS!!!!
Don't know what I did but CWM WORK NOW!!!!
What i've read somewhere is to never open the zip files (what i did). Got the idea of flushing them and download it again. This time it worked.
Gonna let you know when running Darky
----!!!!WORKING!!!!----
I Have Darky 6.0 Running on my Bell GT-I9000M!!!!!
First I want to thanx everyone of you who helped me out! You've been a great help.
Also I want to get the summary of my actions so Others could take advantage of this thread.
-Froyo version FROYO.UGJK4 (that is the official GT-I9000M update from BELL Mobility) was painfull to do anything so I downgraded to the eclair.UGJH2 (that is the Original Firmware from Bell)
First I've Rooted my phone using Superoneclic 1.5.5.0 that you can find here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 (enable debuging mode on the phone in Settings-applications-developpement-debuging) then plug the phone and on superoneclic press ROOT...wait and follow indications
Then went to ODIN 1.7 that you can find here
http://www.general-search.com/fileinfo/20192867
You can find the BELL 2.1 firmware
here http://www.multiupload.com/ZNBT2RY5Y0 Password is samsung-firmwares.com
In odin i've used the 512.pit file (place it in the Pit section)
Then placed the 2.1 Firmware in the PDA section.
Took care Repartition, auto-reboot, F.Reset Time check box was check.
Booted in download mode (to get it right with odin i've booted in recovery first: Vol Up+Home+Power when bootscreen appear released it. After Pressed on Reboot now and immediatly pressed Vol DOWN+HOME+Power) I GOT THE BIG YELLOW LOGO OF ANDROID and in ODIN i got the Yellow icon appeared.
At this moment I've pressed START in odin and waited. The phone was acting like when updating through Kies.
When finished I was on ECLAIR
After, I've Re-Rooted the phone with superoneclic again.
Installed Rom Manager
Downloaded the CMW (CLockworkmod) that you can find here:
http://www.multiupload.com/5CUIK88JM0 (DON'T OPEN THIS ZIP BECAUSE IT WILL BREAK THE SIGNATURE NEEDED TO VALIDATE THE FILE)
I've placed the update.zip file (CMW) at the root of the internal SD Card of the phone and rebooted into recovery mode. I went on the apply update.zip (first time it was not working, then second time it worked)
At this moment I was on Android 2.1, Rooted, and CWM Recovery was working.
To Install the Darky's v6.0 Gingerbread Edition, I've downloaded it here:
http://www.multiupload.com/YPQVS4WO9C (ONCE AGAIN DON'T OPEN THE ZIP)
I've placed it at the root of the phone (same place than update.zip)
Opened Rom Manager, and selected Install a Rom from SD Card.
I've selected the zip File and applied it.
Phone went into recovery mode by itself then started installing Darky. (took like 5 minutes but it is said to be between 5-10 minutes so...)
HURRAY I'M ON DARKY CUSTOM ROM!!!!
PS: (at boot screen GT-I9000M will change to GT-I9000), Boot Screen Animation will also change for the Nexus One Boot animation.
Took me a day and half from Noob to This but hope other Bell user (or SGS user) will find their solution here.
Now let me alone I have to play with my new toy lolll
Just got back home. I will follow your footsteps. Do you have 850 mhz band ?
You with Bell ? Any problem making and receiving calls using Darky's rom ?
Followed your steps. Now I'm running Darky's v6.0 rom.
Even if it's a Bell phone, i'm using it on rogers.
I don't have any band problems(yes i have the 850 band). In fact, since i'm on Darky it look like if the wifi and phone antenna is far better. I got reception in places i wasn't before...and can even say GPS lock my position accuratly in less than 10 sec
Everything is.better since darky run on my phone

Hey, can you please clarify the ODIN steps? I have the exact same problem seen here.
I've completed up until where you put the phone in download mode. I set up ODIN as described, then connected my phone via USB, then enetered Download mode - but I only get a yellow icon on the phone, not in ODIN. Have I gone wrong somewhere?
I've never flashed a rom before. I currently have stock froyo with the paragon kernel i flashed using the app sgs kernel flasher. I have clockwork mod rom manager, I created a backup of my current rom. So then I tried installing the serendipity rom from the sd card but i get an error message. I read on the sticky on how to flash a custom ROM you need to use ODIN and flash back to stock 2.1 then do a master wipe and re root it and stuff.
Their link to download ODIN is broken so I don't know how to get it. And is there really no other way to flash it besides doing a master wipe and using ODIN?
flash to stock and master clear is not needed. what IS needed are specifics on WHAT error message you get when trying to flash the rom you want
The error message is
"E: failed to verify whole-file signature"
"E: signature verification failed"
"Installation aborted"
Then it brings be to the blue menu so i just select reboot system now
bad download, re-download rom.
May be completely off, but it doesn't sound like you're actually in clockwork mod recovery, but rather stock recovery.
But here's the post with the one click odin with mirrors and I personally would suggest useing it since I generally like to stick to as clean a flash as I can:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Second, I don't know if you've ever seen MobileTechVids tutorial on how to flash custom roms, but I suggest you watch the full series first if you haven't already.
here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsafJ-9uRqk
I watch the series and try and stick as close to the tut as I can when I'm unsure (or the one provided by the Rom maker as they know what's best for their rom)...
One suggestion, when flashing Serendipity disconnect your phone from cable right before the actual flashing (gave me a glitch in which I couldn't mount storage via usb). Other than that, read read read. I feel it's all I do when it comes to this stuff, but proper research is indispensible.

Ok I got the stock rom flashed back and rooted it using one click. Now for some reason I can't reboot into clockwork recovery mode. I flashed it successfully. So i click on reboot into recovery and nothing happens. I try clicking on install room from sd card and that doesnt work either
Power off, hold 3 buttons att screen will come on. Keep holding. Screen will go off. Keep holding. Screen comes on again let off the power button but keep the volumes held, this will boot you into stock recovery, since you said you flashed cwm already I'm assuming you mean with rom manager, so the update.zip should be on your sdcard, so just reinstall packages twice and you should boot into cwm.

On serendipities main "download" page they have instructions to install. In those instructions is a link to a file you can download. Place that file along with the serendipity 6.3.zip file in the root of your sd card. Use the " 3 button" technique or Rom managers "reboot to recovery" option to get into stock recovery. Hit "reinstall packages" once/possibly twice. That will put you into clockwork mod recovery. Select install zip from sd card, find the serendipity6.3.zip and click power to flash. Confirm. And after it does some stuff it will ask you to reboot. Upon reboot it will as if you want to enable lagfix. Hit plain "Yes". Watch it do its thing and viola...
You have the "dirty" way of how to flash serendipity... But first I please ask you to spend atleast a day reading this forum or others and understanding these instructions and the reasons behind them.
followed instructions off the website and still doesn't work
I was running 2.2 and have done a lot of reading a video watching (thanks Mobile Tech videos) and finally conjured the guts to flash serendipity.
I flashed stock using odin...that went great. Copied the update.zip to sd card. Installed zip twice in 2e recovery. Copied Serendipity.zip file to sd card. started in recovery mode, selected "install from sdcard" selected serendipity.zip file and it seemed to go through that process rather quickly. Then I selected reboot and then everything just started FCing all over the place. Can't even load the stock that I had on there. I don't know what to do. Help please. I can get it back into recovery mode. Tried doing the wipe data/factory reset. That did help either. Help please. I really want to try serendipity. Thanks again in advanced.
Did you run a restore using TiBu at all? Or was it just a straight flash from stock to Serendipity?
Plus, were you running a phone that came with 2.2 out of the box? Or did you upgrade to stock Froyo yourself?

I did run TB and I had originally flashed up to froyo (took me all night one night) and then went through the process I explained and hit the dead end. I finally was able to get odin to read the phone and flash back to stock. It was a learning process. I realized that I needed not only the Serendipity_6.3.zip file but ALSO the kitchen file to included with it. That wasn't in the directions I don't think. Finally got it all on there. I love it now. I appreciate everyone's help. Any word on a how-to for Bluedipity?
Got a VZW Galaxy tab. Rooted and got ROM manager & SGS Kernel Flasher.
1. I flash using SGS and it successfully flashes, as it reboots and I can see from Settings->Device Info that it shows the Developer's version.
2. I then go to CWM (ROM Manager) load ROM from SD, chose the ROM which is in update.zip format, I select to wipe date and casche and then nothing.
It gets stuck at the SAMSUNG boot screen. So i have to use Heimdall to restore back to stock VZW Rom. I have tried several times, even after flash just tried to reboot directly into Recovery mod (Power+Volume Down) and same thing. Goes to SAMSUNG boot screen and freezes.
What am I missing or doing wrong???
First thing i would recommend is : uninstall rom manager. It causes more problems. If you did a search on these forums you would find loads more tales of woe re rom manager.
Second thing is: have look through the dev section, at the instructions for installing clockwork recovery. Then look for the appropriate rom for your device.
But whatever you do, uninstall rom manager

Have you tried booting into CW Recovery manually and running the KhasMek.Voodoo.Plus.CDMA.Tab.v5.OC.zip (like the instructions say)?
Your thread header says you are using ROM Manager and trying to run the update.zip package.
ROM Manager _should_ work, but maybe stick with instructions especially if you're having issues.
Yes I have tried going into Recovery manually as I stated in my original post.
I always flashed with SGS kernel flasher as it seemed to work well.
Then I tried manually going to Recovery w/o CWM and gets stuck at boot screen as well.
I tried WITH CWM and same stuck at boot screen.
Tried wiping data through Recovery, through the UI (Settings then ect, ect) and several other combos trying to load the custom ROM.
All I am successul is at rooting, then flashing the kernel. Then no matter which step I tried if i reboot it will get stuck at the SAMSUNG boot screen.
Even if I just turn it off and then turn it back on, after the flash, it will get stuck at the boot screen.
I downloaded the kernal flash directly from the link of the first page. And if the kernal file was courrupt i don't think the flash would go successfully.
I've never used the SGS Flasher so can't say what it would do if the file was corrupt.
Maybe flash it using Heimdall to check the file?
Sorry to hear you are having problems. I am also sorry for the rudeness on this forum. Although I seldom post I read it daily. Here is what I would try;
1. The issue may be with the file name update.zip if you can, rename it to anythingyoulike.zip on you computer and then copy it to your SD card. You may even have to take the card out of your tab to do this (delete the update.zip once the file is renamed). Once the renamed file is on the SD card try to reflash.
2. Have you tried to start again using Odin? There is a good clip on you tube about this. As long as the tab at least starts to boot it is not bricked. Feel free to PM me for any additional help.
Good luck.

Ok, below im going to suggest two different ways to accomplish this.
Before you try this, if you are currently on 2.2 you will run into a 3e security error when in recovery. This process must be done from 2.1 or you must use the 3e security work around if attempting from 2.2. Which is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
For me, its easier to use odin and flash back to 2.1 and then load the rom from there than to mess with the whole recovery thing.
How To: Install clockwork recovery.
DOWNLOAD THIS FILE FIRST THEN FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW.
FILE: http://www.mediafire.com/?ve234hbg64ctcu0
1. Go to the download folder and rename clockworkrecovery.zip to update.zip. Mount your phone and drag the update.zip file into the root directory. It is ok to overwrite the update.zip you used before. When it is done copying turn off your phone.
2. Unplug your phone and hold down both volume buttons and the power button until a strange menu with blue items pops up. This is called the recovery menu.
3. Scroll using the volume buttons to the menu item titled "reinstall packages" and press the power button to select.
4. Your phone should restart and you should be at a green menu which is clockwork mod. Do whatever you need to do from here.
Let me say, this is probably an older version of CWM because I pulled it from this thread :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
It should work fine for flashing all 2.2 based roms but I do not have any say for the 2.3 roms as Ive never tried.
2nd way. Use odin to flash a kernel that already has the CWM recovery installed. This is a little more complicated than it sounds as some kernels are not compatible with some roms and you must check that before flashing. If you choose this method, you need to go find a kernel that works and understand how to use Odin before trying.
