If I'm not mistaken, the Bionic has an encrypted bootloader. Will there actually be a development community behind this phone?
According to a developer on the mikmik forums the bionics boot loader is unlocked and the system dump has been rooted.

I'm sort of waiting to see if the Droid Prime is vanilla or not. Maybe by then the Bionic will be cheaper and I can compare the two. I imagine the CM team will develop for this beast.

The bootloader is not unlocked. It is unlockable if the carriers allow it. And that is the question "if"

you say its locked & unlockable if the carrier allows it, but the HTC Thunderbolt's boot loader is unlocked, so shouldn't this one be as well? All I know is that there is a crap ton of software that I do not want and would like to remove in the future.
Again I apologize for my question but having 2 people saying 2 different things to someone new like me just confuses me.
Should I return it and get the tbolt so i can get some cm7 roms, or will this have them in the future and should i wait it out?

Moto's had a nasty habit of locking bootloaders, which prevents custom kernels from running.
HTC did for awhile, but got some sense and knocked it off. Samsung doesn't lock theirs.
Even if Verizon does permit unlocked bootloaders, Moto still has to implement it. And if they don't, well, we're out of luck until they either change their policy or someone figures out how to get around it.
HTC has publicly stated they are only unlocking bootloaders of phones starting with the Sensation and the EVO 3D and forward; this doesn't include the Thunderbolt.

yet we can unlock the tbolt easily.
I sure hope so! Can't wait and hope it develops as the Inc forum has
the unlocked bootloader is a deciding factor in me getting this phone, I have hopes that a developer can get it. God knows how long it'll take if they do actually approve the unlock for it to go through, could be 6-8 months.
The Bootloader doesn't need to be unlocked for custom Roms.

Agree completely.. at least overclocking should be possible. Even with the debloat and the few tweaks I have made now, the phone doesn't hiccup. Haha, my heart skipped a few beats there when I read the title. Damn it
Moto shipped the D3 with a locked bootloader, but they will unlock later this year (supposedly).
Plus, per their quote from another Engadget article
We completely understand the operator requirement for security to the end user, and as well, want to support the developer communities desire to use these products as a development platform. It is our intention to enable the unlockable/relockable bootloader currently found on Motorola XOOM across our portfolio of devices starting in late 2011, where carriers and operators will allow it

Motorola will make the first move with the bootloaders, then Verizon (or whoever else) will make theirs. Dunno how long between Motorola and us getting the unlock, but they can delay the process

It's a locked bootloader running 2.3.4 which is extremely tough to crack. Plus you add in the fact that every single known exploit is blocked, that's the development delay.

I doubt we'll see the bootloader unlocked. Look at HTC even. They've released their list of devices they'll be allowing the web-based unlock to happen with and it's over a dozen deep with not a single Verizon device on the list. It's Verizon that doesn't want us to have the unlock, not Motorola.
If Motorola really wanted us to have an unlock they would leak it. Maybe Googlorola will instead?

Motorola probably has a contract with Verizon that they will not unlock the phones without their permission first, which they would be breaching and surely be sued for if they simply just went ahead and did it.

In AT&T's letter to Al Franken they mentioned CIQ was disabled on the Vivid and skyrocket because of performance issues when activated, even though it's dormant, and I still want it out. Having the source allows us to tinker with the rom ahead of time so we can build roms before bootloader unlock takes place
You figure most roms are tested via emulation before they are made flashable, these forums will be picking up real shortly, Therefore a bootloader unlock is not far away especially since they released source on the vivid.
I am currently "experimenting" with source. I hope to release a rom after the bootloader unlock and a stable method of permanent root has surfaced on AT&T Vivid Hardware.

I don't reckon most Droid 3 owners give a **** about ICS on their phones, nor do they have any clue what it even is. That is a shame though, because for Android enthusiasts like us, it is a big deal, especially when we are running ICS on it already and it makes MotoBlur look like the old LG Env interface.
Most people don't root, and Verizon isn't going to promote an OS version over a new handset. I love my D3, but it's utter nonsense that it won't get official ICS just months after Google called the version the great unifier that can and will run on every phone.

I doubt that we will ever see bootloaders unlocked on our current phones. I suspect that it could not be done without sending the phones back to Motorola and having them replace the "one time" programmable firmware. Why else would having a Dev Razr be useless for unlocking other Razrs. I think the only way we would ever be able to put anything we wanted on these phones would be if Moto released their encrypted key so that the phone would accept it. FAT chance of that happening, but I bet that hasn't crossed anyone's mind at Moto. Maybe we could suggest that to them.

OK, can someone answer a possibly dumb question for me? I've spent the last year happily rooting my original Droid and running custom roms - finally settling on Cyanogen Mod. Now, I'm no expert but I've found it pretty easy to do by just following the instructions that are available many places online. I now have my Droid 3 and so far am just running it stock - waiting for CM9 to get to a release version.
So, from the discussion I'm assuming that rooting the Device and loading Cyanogen is somehow something less than "unlocking the boot loader". But if it is, does that matter? Whatever that actually means it doesn't seem to be preventing anyone from running custom ROM's - or am I missing something?

But I used to run custom kernels on my Droid 1 too. I was running CM7.1 with a Chevy#1 (think that's what it was) kernel which was what let me use Set CPU to overclock. Is that not loading a "custom kernel"? Or was the boot loader unlocked on my Droid 2?
I'm not criticizing or saying anyone else is wrong - I'm just trying to understand what the differences are between what I have been doing and having a true "unlocked boot loader". What are the things that would allow me to do that can't be done now?

I did the same, but it is FAR too early to expect anything.Since it has a locked bootloader, it'll probably take a while (similar to previous versions of the atrix) and I'm sure once Moto releases their webkit to unlock the bootloader the floodgates will open, but hopefully someone will step up and prove me wrong
I tried all the obvious root methods with no luck. There is no similar phone to the AHD yet, so nobody's attempted root on similar hardware.

I'm just interested in why we haven't got root like most other phones. I mean, the HTC One X hasn't been out long before they had a toolkit out for it.
I think they even had root for the Droid 4 the day before it was released. SGS3 came out and people are already making JB ports.
Now the Atrix HD comes around and poof... nothing? If I had been more technically inclined, or knew where to start, I would have made a root method myself.
It shouldnt be so hard, whats stopping us? (besides a few people just waiting for the web kit)
...and if no one else is up to it, where do I start?

Now the Atrix HD comes around and poof... nothing? If I had been more technically inclined, or knew where to start, I would have made a root method myself.
It shouldnt be so hard, whats stopping us? (besides a few people just waiting for the web kit)
...and if no one else is up to it, where do I start?

I have been wondering the same thing now. If I knew where to start also I would try coming up with a method

Flagship phones get dev attention faster. Im pretty sure its the encrypted bootloader thing that's holding it up

Not really.
If you go check the other thread we've tried over 7 methods.
Motorola patch the /system/, /data/local/, and all the system blocks.
We can push files into /data/tmp/ but we cant write to mmcblk0p36 with debugfs
It simply wont give us permission.
With an unlocked bootloader, yes for sure we can get root. At that point it'd be less of a concern to get root because we'd be able to do so much more.
I even tried zergRush exploit used by most Snapdragon S4 phones with no luck.
Again we ran into problems with permissions to write or mount /system/
chmod wont do anything either.
We need root on this phone. hopefully someone will be able to succeed on getting root soon!

So what is the hold up. Is it just the Verizon variant that is lacking root? I thought the other variants had root? Not one post in the development sections. Weird.

Nothing posted in the DEV section yet because we don't have root, and as far as I know there hasn't been a VZW Dev edition released yet (and I'm doubting there will be with the production issues they've had getting the regular GS6E's out).
Trust me, we all (or mostly all?) want root, but we have to be patient - i'd be blown away if we got a root solution before the Note 4.
What I thought of course. But there should at least be a post or two saying: hey, I'm so and so dev. Im working on root. Will post back in a few days when completed. Lol
When you root your device, the integrity gets breached, which is necessary for important and sensitive features like mobile payments. :good:

if you care why read root threads on xda?

Well if those so called "caring" companies would give us customers a little bit more control of our phones to get rid of some of their crapware, etc., then I would be all for it but they keep the lock on too tight as far as I'm concerned.

i lold at this post.. you dont just have a new device come out and a dev say it will take him a few days... the note 4 has been out for many months now and is still not rooted.. if you want to know where devs are at check those threads because they are working on rooting that device currently..
there is i believe only one L exploit that would not help in gettimg root available right now so until more exploits are found we dont stand a chance with root

You don't read the right threads then.

I came off a RAZR HD MAXX, and have always had Moto phones (this is my first non-moto phone), but I read in at least 2 places that root cannot be had on this phone because verizon and AT&T have locked bootloaders. Now, Im not sure what the boot loader has to do with getting root, because with my Motos I always rooted before unlocking the BL (on the phones I had that UL the BL was an option), but it just doesnt sound right.
I dont think I want to use custom ROMs any longer, I just want to use root apps. Really hoping someone finds an exploit for it.

I believe it is for all kernels up to May 2015.
It has been tested on the S6, and should work for any phone with a vulnerable kernel.
It should result in a root tool similar to towelroot.

You havent been on my roms then .. Its a stripped down bare bone stock rom with slight tweaks/mods.. i did try theming before but with theme engine now its pointless to theme it now..
My rom is the Extreme Syndicate rom in the Verizon S5 thread.. will develop for the verizon gs6 edge when possible and most likely make some buids for att s6 edge as well
