Hi everyone,
I'm planning to import a refurbished NC from USA to my country as b&n doesn't sell them here. I would be using it as a tablet PC (froyo/gingerbread/honeycomb).
However, before making the purchase I wanted some expert advice as to whether it is safe to buy refurbished? As i can't go back to claim warranty.
Also, is there anyway to permanently brick the device. I'm pretty comfortable with running ADB commands or using other software skills, but is there a condition where all this fails? I understand if I overclock too much the processor might die but what if im careful about that?
For example, in case of my old iPod touch no matter how much i screw it up on the software side, I can always boot into recovery and restore the device using images provided by Apple. Is the same ability available on Nook Color as well?
Thanks.
UPDATE 11/9/2011
Thanks everyone for replying!
Another question has come to my mind..
What's the difference between a refurbished and new one?
I know refurbished is supposed to be "used" model but does it look old and weared out? Do all components work as good? Does screen/body have scratches or anything? Do i get anything less than that in the brand new retail package?
Any help appreciated.

Software-wise there is no reason to worry, the Nook is virtually unbrickable, the primary thing to worry about with a refurbished Nook is the hardware. Buying refurbished is always a gamble especially if you have no warranty.

I have not-so-tech savvy relatives in US. I can ask them to start it up and at the most check wifi/battery are working before they get it overseas to me. Is that enough?
Also, by refurbished I mean the $169 thing from buy.com which is sold directly by b&n through buy.com . Is that also unsafe to buy?

$149 B&N Refurbished. Not sure about shipping though.
Software wise, I agree with joen, i dont know how in the world you can brick it. I erased my EVERYTHING on my NC to the point to where when it booted it said A N D R O I D _ for ever and ever, but I was still able to boot in CWR so I was still able to flash the stock firmware back on it.
It is impossible to brick via software but if you break your SD card slit your screwed. So just be extra careful putting SD cards in and out of the nook.

I bought my first nook new and my second one refurbished both still work perfect and there is no difference between them.

Got mine refurbished on Ebay directly from Barnes and noble. looks and feels brand new except one portion of the plastic Bezel that feels like there is a slight gap below it and flexes ever so slightly if you hold and squeeze on the bottom right corner, opposite the exposed corner with the as card slot. not a big deal though. can't tell or ever hold it that way once I got the silicone sleeve for it.

They are refurbished, and you should get your money back soon.
How do you know they're refurbished?
And secondly, if they are what do they fix on the refurbished ones? Why do they look new?
Thanks

They probably just fix what was wrong with the device in the first place when it was returned by someone and/or parts which look used or marked (I.e. cover). It wouldn't make a whole lot of fiscal sense for HTC to throw out every slightly defective phone
Got my replacement today and;
BRAND NEW WITH AMOLED SCREEN. BOOYAH
How do you order a replacement N1 if your phone is stolen? HTC doesn't appear to sell the directly, under any circumstances.
Man... you may be out of luck on that one.
give them a call here (USA only) 1-888-216-4736
Next time get insurance or something. Or glue it to your skin. :/

They aren't, the way you can tell is that the screws on the back have slight scratches on them, where the new ones are plain black. The good thing about refurbs are that they are 100% made sure to work, and they replace the mobo so its like new.
Definitely. But its all good. Besides the screen issue.

Next can you use punctuation, it makes it a lot easier to read!
I would expect (maybe) $140 (£65~) to $180 (£110~)
But the prices in the usa may differ from me just converting the prices!
Go on eBay and put some g1s similar to yours, on your watching list and see what they go for.
Hope this helps!

Good luck with the sale!
you might want to check out swappa.com .. came across it last night in a search for a replacement fone .. its only for buying and selling gently used android phones and with each sale they donate a portion of it to cyanogen.. hth
If you take the back cover off, there's a void sticker on a round piece of plastic... Covering a screw. Is there anyway to reattach that? I want to replace my cracked screen but don't want to void my warranty

Use an exacto knife and a still hand. To be honest its just a sticker, would you pay more for a insured replacement or save a third of the cost by repairing the screen yourself.

i do, but there's a $199 deductible.. so, i'm debating on replacing the screen, report it lost then sell it on craigslist and pay the $200 or just be honest and tell them i want a replacement due to the cracked screen.

If you use your insurance do it the right way. If you falsify that you lost the phone to asurion they will blacklist your imei for the broken phone in question, if the craigslist buyer wants to activate it on att, they are not gonna be too happy
When you get a replacement phone from asurion, they direct you to a site to tie in your new sim card that they ship to you with the imei of the new phone ( this relinks your new phone to the insurance). Fail to do so they will hit you with a retail charge on your next bill.
If you have the courage to fix it yourself then by all means do, but if you're new to this, but considering the risks.

First off let me say I didn't encourage him/her to do nothing I only stated that you statment isn't true I have never heard of a backlisted att phone ...not to be confused with sprint or verizion that does render your phone useless..iv personally seen people lose their phone get the replacement and the find the phone they lost in the first place and all they had to do was stick in the new sim card into their old cell phone and low and behold it works with no problems ...I don't care what you think about them pictures but the fact is your wrong becauseiv seen it with my own 2 eyes several times ....just because the law says we can't smoke weed doesn't mean that we don't ... Regardless, If he wants to take the chance at fixing it himself, he can do so. He would be saving at least half of the cost or more asurion would charge as a premium ( $199)
FYI HTC VIVID Replacement Screen:
http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/...-Screen-Replacement-Parts-OEM-Repair-Fix.html
And thats $65 for just the replacement screen.
95% of the people registered on XDA could replace the Vivid screen with no issue and the right tools, and i am probably not exaggerating.
I dont know if you follow the news but Sen. Chuck Schumer ( NY-Democrat ) is very close to striking a change early 2012 as to how Asurion handles claims universally in the US for all insured phones. He supports SOPA unfortunately.
Make sure when you order the replacement screen ,it comes with the double sided tape attached

8125,
That's the LCD, I just need the screen. I'll probably get it off eBay. Yeah, I really don't want to go the fraud route. It's just a ripoff that I have to pay $199 for a new one. But, then again... It's an insurance company. Its their job to rip you off.
For those of you who have gone through the AT&T Warranty Replacement process, what condition did your refurbished phone come in?
I'm asking because I just received a replacement request and there are a bunch of scratches on the screen. I thought refurbished meant "like new" quality but just wanted to ask the others on the board to see what your experience was.
Thanks in advance.

I've received replacements device's a few times. Every time I received one its in mint condition. I never saw even the tiniest of scratches anywhere on the device. You should definitely call the warranty department and let them know you want another device and explain to them why you are making the request.

My replacement was brand new. It came in a sealed box and the phone had the plastic on it and everything. I don't know if you have a deductible, but mine was $200 and for $200 I'd better get a brand new phone...
I loved the feeling and sound of pulling the screen protector off of a new phone.
I got 2 replacements phones the first one was in a box and in immaculate condition but had an issue with ram partition, they sent me a second phone that was wrapped up in plastic and had a couple of fine scratches on the screen.

Refurbished phones should typically be in like-new condition. There should not be any scratches on it. Return it.
Thanks everyone. That's what I pretty much figured.
Called AT&T and complained. Another refurbished one is in the mail. Hopefully this one is in better condition.

Yes, I was able to root my replacement phone using TowelRoot and also install SS, just to make sure.
I'll have to Odin back to stock though before I send it back for the other replacement without scratches.

Or worst case scenario, just take it to Best Buy Samsung Center and have them do restore the phone for you.

So I have had a Nexus 6 with a broken LCD sitting in a drawer for a while because screen prices (in addition to Motorola repair options) are much more than I would like, in addition to the phone running a custom ROM with an unlocked bootloader. So today I decided to look on ebay and screen prices are still pretty high, except this one.

Looks like this guy got his hands on one of those prototype LCD assemblies. I'm not sure who would part out and sell one of these but, here it is. I was wondering if this was worth a try or if I should just leave it dead in my drawer. The dude doesn't seem to know what he is selling but, mentions the ribbon cable is a bit short. If anyone can guide me on this, I would appreciate it.
EDIT: Meant to say Prototype rather than Developer, my apologies. If a mod wants to come through and fix the title, that would be great.
Thanks, TriguyRN

Assuming you can do the repair yourself, I would just shell out the extra bit of cash to get a legit LCD. But, if you want to take the risk to save a buck, nothing is holding you back. It did say something about flex cables being different, in which case you would have a bit of trouble. Cheers!
