Judging by what I'm seeing on some of the forums, it seems as though people are upgrading officially through the System Update option. However, mine continues to tell me that I'm up to date. Could someone advise me on the status of the OTA?

I'm not sure it's been officially released yet, people just got info from here showing that apparently the official version and the leaked version are the same number. I can't verify this as I haven't updated or checked the versions myself, and some folks said the official release might have some other changes included so I'm still waiting. I don't want to get stuck and miss out on something.

From the Motorola web site my understanding is the only OTA update was for special test phones. The soak test hasn't started or you would have seen it posted on Droid-Life as they usually have it as soon as the email has been sent out.
I read there was a problem with the D2G Exchange encryption or something and maybe that is either using resources or the D3 has the same problem. Don't know but I'm guessing something is up or it would have been out by now.
I'm not updating my phone until the official version is out.
I appreciate the response everyone. I, as well, would like to wait for the official release rather than be hasty and install the leak.

Does anyone know if the leak fixes the data roaming problem? My co-worker got his Droid 3 today but cannot use data since we live in an extended network. Bummer for him, but I'm trying to help fix his problem if I can.

Should be able to turn it on in settings. That is what I did. The setting did take a few times for it to stay active, but not had to reactivate the setting in a few weeks.

I don't reckon most Droid 3 owners give a **** about ICS on their phones, nor do they have any clue what it even is. That is a shame though, because for Android enthusiasts like us, it is a big deal, especially when we are running ICS on it already and it makes MotoBlur look like the old LG Env interface.
Most people don't root, and Verizon isn't going to promote an OS version over a new handset. I love my D3, but it's utter nonsense that it won't get official ICS just months after Google called the version the great unifier that can and will run on every phone.

I'm still running the alpha 6 and all seriousness if it weren't for a few things I would swear it was better than alpha. If motorola only knew what a pure ics experience was like on their hardware they could easily bury samsung and the crap nexus they released.

I compared the hardware specs between XT860 and Galaxy Nexus and the only differences I really saw was that we only have 512mb ram. Same GPU almost the same CPU, I think moto is buying time so Goog can save them

Moto still has not confirmed that the D3 is not getting ICS. As the DX and D2 both received GB well after they were no longer being sold, I think it's a good possibility that it will. We'll see, though.

I doubt that we will ever see bootloaders unlocked on our current phones. I suspect that it could not be done without sending the phones back to Motorola and having them replace the "one time" programmable firmware. Why else would having a Dev Razr be useless for unlocking other Razrs. I think the only way we would ever be able to put anything we wanted on these phones would be if Moto released their encrypted key so that the phone would accept it. FAT chance of that happening, but I bet that hasn't crossed anyone's mind at Moto. Maybe we could suggest that to them.

OK, can someone answer a possibly dumb question for me? I've spent the last year happily rooting my original Droid and running custom roms - finally settling on Cyanogen Mod. Now, I'm no expert but I've found it pretty easy to do by just following the instructions that are available many places online. I now have my Droid 3 and so far am just running it stock - waiting for CM9 to get to a release version.
So, from the discussion I'm assuming that rooting the Device and loading Cyanogen is somehow something less than "unlocking the boot loader". But if it is, does that matter? Whatever that actually means it doesn't seem to be preventing anyone from running custom ROM's - or am I missing something?

But I used to run custom kernels on my Droid 1 too. I was running CM7.1 with a Chevy#1 (think that's what it was) kernel which was what let me use Set CPU to overclock. Is that not loading a "custom kernel"? Or was the boot loader unlocked on my Droid 2?
I'm not criticizing or saying anyone else is wrong - I'm just trying to understand what the differences are between what I have been doing and having a true "unlocked boot loader". What are the things that would allow me to do that can't be done now?
droid 1 is the only true unlocked bootloader moto phone with the exception of the atrix, which was accomplished with many many hours of work.

The most interesting part of this for me was the upgrade promise... "If your device cannot be updated because it degrades the user's experience, Motorola will give you $100 to purchase one of their newer devices"...
Which do you think we'll get?

See: ATRIX HD kernel changer in original Android development section... it's for AT&T phones, so no promises it won't screw something up, although it shouldn't.
EDIT: After a second look, it looks like it will only update the kernel, but not the system. :/

Soak tests are kind of a test phase for updates that may (or may not, depending on bug reports) be sent out OTA for everyone else. A few (hundred) people sign up to get the pre-release, and report bugs if any. If very few, or no bugs are reported, the software update is pushed to all users of the device.
My tab's Flyer than yours (unless this is posted in a Flyer thread... Then it's just as Flyer...)

Soak tests are pre release tests of future official software updates.

Soak tests often end up being the final release that goes out over the air, so I like to think of them as release candidate testing.
The current update soak is limited to specific IMEI numbers for people who signed up and were selected to test and provide feedback to Motorola.
Is it still possible to sign up to be a tester? I somehow got into the samsung dev channel when I was researching phones but that doesn't do me any good now...
Also I would bet we see Jellybean before most other phones, but as it's focused more twards tablets it might be a while. Still nice to see updates coming via the soaks though so maybe they are more on the ball than most so maybe this year. But then again AT&T has to have their hand in it too...
I'm sure well get JB. Problem is I'm sure we wouldn't see it for at least a year or so....
I'm for one hoping you guys get jellybean but wouldn't hold your breath with anything Motorola says after what they did to us og Atrix users. Just wrong.

From what I am hearing, the OG Atrix has issues with the specific NVidia chipset. NVidia is not providing ICS compatible drivers. (hence when there are issues with ICS/JB even with the Cyanogenmod build for OG Atrix)

That I understand, the thing is the at&t soak has 4.1.1 and a different version... I'd be nice to know the specifics.
The update is carrier specific, not network specific.
Things get even more interesting as the Razr Hd at&t is also 4.1.2.

To me, its kind of strange that AT&T pushed the Bell update to my phone. I'm guessing what happened is that AT&T told me I have an update, and then they connected me to the Motorola servers, who saw that my phone is a Bell AHD and sent me that update.
Good news for Bell AHD owners, the camera app is updated. HDR is now included (the new icon is pretty ugly though).
Okay so I may be a little late to the party on this, but I've never seen anything about this. With the new update, there is a quick settings menu. At the home screen, swipe the home screen to the right (so go to the screen to the left of home), it is now a quick settings screen.

I'll believe it when the update hits my phone.
Doesn't matter to me. I just want to know what difference will it really make? Is this an update just to keep the users happy and make them feel like HTC got their back?
I'm not knocking them or anything, because I certainly don't see myself choosing another manufacturer any time soon...but why claim that 4.4.4 changes were baked into 4.4.3, then give it to use anyway?
5.0 is more worth the wait than that 4.4.4
