EDIT:
odin crashed while going back to stock then
my phone will get to download mode buuuuut.. my computer doesnt recognize my phone...
i re-downloaded drivers and the phone is recognized however odin failed the 2 times i got it in dl mode(took about an hour to get it each time)... so i have a jig ordered but with odin not working im not feeling optimistic
nothing seems to happen when its plugged into the wall no battery icon. i reinstalled drivers hoping that would help with no luck.. i just got it back in dl mode after like an hour of it not turning on for me but it doesnt do anything once i get it there.
Get odin3 one click and use it in dl mode. It will brg ur phone back to stock

definately problem of bad USB..either cable or port....try using different USB cable or different computer....Use full odin by iCezar...its with minimum risk....specially very beneficial in cases like yours....
my pc doesnt see my phone. thats the issue i cant use odin. and the only thing my phone will do is glow black or go to download mode, idk if its charging but its getting hard to get it in dl mode, multiple tries atm no luck
i have already tried reinstalling the drivers. what are they called so i can delete them and install again rather then just redownload maybe that will help?

nope this only happened AFTER my crash on odin. my pc has always seen the phone.
try connecting your phone to pc when odin is already running. See whether it detects. Mine worked this way.

thats not a big deal, just get it in download mode, and flash it with odin.
EDIT: might as well us this post to say what my computer says with usb since i got in in dl mode again...
USB device not recognized
one of the usb devices attached to this computer has
malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it.
then something about for assistance in solving this issue click here
this has happened to me acouple times, the first was my fault I pull the usb before odin finished. I could get back into Download mode but Odin would not see the phone and computer would not recognize the phone either, device not recognized.
I tried rebooting, re-installing drivers etc. did not work.
but after an hour or so I finally got it to recognize and odin'd back to stock and back to flashing I was.
this is what I did hope it works for you.
1. disconnect all usb devices
2. un-install captivate drivers
3. reboot computer
4. goto device manager and verify that there is no USB device errors, if there is delete them and reboot again verify again in device manager.
5. install captivate drivers
6. reboot computer
7. start ODIN (DG or iCezars, iCezars is safer)
8. plug USB cable into the computer first (the one that came with the phone not an after market one)
9. hold both up and down volume buttons on the phone
10. plug the usb cable into the phone quickly to get into download mode (if I plugged the phone is slowly ODIN did not recognize the phone no COM, once I did it quick and it picked it up)
11. push START as soon as ODIN shows the COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4 etc (this had to be done quickly too, If i waited ODIN would show the COM but still would not start flashing back to stock)
this worked for me more than once I hope it helps you good luck
oh ok thanks, ill give that a try when i get off of work. i hope my battery doesnt die idk if its charging or not
well no luck even getting back to download mode. i bought a jig so i guess im waiting and trying while i wait.
i keep reading its possible to completely brick if odin fails... did i perma brick?
well a bump of sorts, the jig should come in the mail tomorrow. i miss my phone
jig came in the mail, im working on a few failed odin3 attempts but as i freaked out and started typing this post it seems like a great success. the jig works wonderful

I have not had to do this but I know some others had issues with Odin and had to right click on Odin and run as administrator for it to work. Also the Odin 1 click should work in almost any situation to get you back to stock. The only worry (again never had the problem) is that depending on the build version of the phone you could lose the three button recovery. Look for the Odin that DG posted.

Did you try a jig?
Okay I have tried just about everything and I know that as long as my phone can enter download mode, it isn't bricked but I can't do anything.
Here's what happened, I was running Fasty 2 and then decided to switch to MIUI 1.9.16, so i downloaded the rom and installed it via rom manager. Well when the phone booted backup, I was stuck in a bootloop. It would loud the miui boot animation and then shut off and start again. So I thought okay corrupted install, I'll just flash to stock and try again. Yeah no dice. I got my phone in download mode and proceeded to flash to stock the same way I always do, but this time it froze at cache.rfs, I pulled out the cord and battery and got the compter screen, exclamation mark, robot screen. I tried again, and it got stuck at cache.rfs again. I tried a variety of one-click downloaders, odin flashable roms, running odin as an admin and i don't know what else to do. It either gets stuck at cache.rfs, boot.bin or sbl.bin. I want to master clear and start over but if my phone isn't in download mode it won't turn on. Please help me
Careful if that flash corrups ur bootloaders you are sol. Try another cable. Connect it to the rear of ur pc. If that doesn't work try another computer.
How do I know if my bootloader is corrupted?
Corrupt bl= Dead phone.
I love you. I thought I was out of luck and who would have thought that just using another usb port made the difference. Seriously you're my hero, if I could afford to, id buy you Samsung haha
Glad to hear you where able to work it out.

I believe I got a virus from downloading some app that was not on the market well long story short I tried to flash it back to a different version
I believe I put something in odin bootload that I wasnt suppose to it was an accident as you see I am a total noob at this then I use the 1 click unbrick now my phone keeps rebooting itself but i looked at the about phone which i get to for a few seconds before it reboots itself again and this is what it says

I have tried a master reset since I could get it into debug just that it keeps looping and it worked in odin but not on my phone and this is what it generated

Ok I gave you the only warning in the PM. I have moved this thread. A word from the wise. Learn what you are doing before you do it. This is not something to be taken lightly. You could very easily mess something up beyond repair. Take a few hours to spend reading and researching.

Make sure you're using a usb port that is on the motherboard (back of computer). Before you plug in your phone to flash, set up Odin first. Put all the files you are going to flash in the right places. After Odin is fully set up, plug in the usb to the back of your computer, then to you phone. Make sure you are in download mode. If the usb still isn't working, try a different USB port that is on the back of the computer. Connecting the usb to the back of the pc is very important. Odin doesn't recognize my phone when it's plugged in the front, when the phone is in download mode. Only the back usb ports.
If Odin still doesn't recognize the phone, try a different USB cable. But do everything else the exact same way as I described.
Also make sure you fully setup Odin before you plug your phone in to the usb.

You probably have mismatch kernel and bootloader loader. Maybe you can try to wipe data / factory reset in recovery.

If you continue to go into a bootloop then I recommend a USB jig for the galaxy s series. I had had that happen before, Nothing worked, couldnt get it into download mode, couldnt get into recovery, Until I got the USB jig, Fixed my problem right away, and I flashed back to stock. The USB jig is only 6 bucks on ebay. Ill link you if you are interested.

Are you sure? Becuz I tried to flash an overclock kernel on my rom, and kept getting a bootloop. Then after flashing a few different kernels, the kernel that came with my rom didn't even work. I had to go back to stock and reflash my rom.
Idk, maybe it was just me then. I apologize. thank you for correcting me, that's how we learn what's right, and what's wrong.

noob advice
I'm a noob, so this comment might just serve to show how little I know, but whenever I find myself in a bootloop situation, I've noticed that the problem starts with the initial attempt of installing a rom via a kernel with an older version of CWM. During the post-install boot sequence, I'll see the AT&T splash screen, a CWM screen with script running, and then a reboot. Usually, accessing the CWM (now on a higher version) and reinstalling the rom will get it working. Not quite kernel / bootloader mismatch, but close.

Try this.
Buy a jig. Either off of Ebay or mobiletechvideos.com
That week get you into download mode.
Then find the HEIMDALL flasher for a build. (my favorite was the one click for saurom Kk4)
Install heimdall drivers, and flash. Boom. Functioning phone.
Hello everybody!
I've tried to find a solution, but without success.
Today I tried to install CWM on a french Galaxy S.
I've rooted the phone with z4root and after I started on download mod with adb.
Then with Odin3 I installed this file "Root-XX_OXA_JVK-v2.7-CWM3RFS.tar".
After that the phone rebooted automatically, unfortunately it's rebooting eachtime on the galaxy s logo.
The problem are that I can't boot on download mod or on CWM.
When the phone is off and I plug it on charger, it doesn't charge!
I think my phone is bricked.
Do you think you can help me or it's dead?
Is there a hard reboot procedure or something like that?
Thanks
I have exactly the same problem!
Are you sure you can't enter recovery? Volume up+home+power.

I know this is weird but keep hard resetting it. Try like 20 more times before you give up. Worked for me in the past I know it is weird. I had just flashed a new factory ROM.
I swear i have tried to enter the Recovery 20-30 times!!
It's fine

did u try vol down + home + power button to go to download mode? if it can do that, the problem is just find some driver to make odin recognize your phone. search for "usb driver for samsung galaxy s" in google
then you can bring back your phone to live by downloading any rom you want and flash it via odin
ps. but if you cannot go to download mode, JIG USB with 301 K ohm will help you look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0
Same problem here, I actually didn't see this in my search and made a new thread about it (feel free to delete). My computer had KIES on it so it had the drivers already and it's the same computer I went through the download mode before with so I have the drivers. I tried to reinstall them but still nothing.
I fear I may need to buy out my contract :crying:

I am sure that I am right with this. "If you root, do not use KIES" so you have to uninstall KIES and download separate USB driver.
Then it should see your phone when connect with ODIN

Sorry, I should have been more specific. When I reinstalled the drivers I had actually uninstalled KIES and installed just the drivers.
I do have an update though but still can't get it to boot completely. Late last night I decided to try to get download mode to work one last time before passing out and pressing Vol-, Home and Power actually brought me to the recovery screen for the first time in my phone's life! "F YA!" was the only thing I could think at the time so I first went through and formatted/wiped every option I could find then installed the CM9 that I knew worked and now I get to the alien with the matrix-esque background and it stops there. I plugged it in and left it on that screen all night and that guy was still staring at me this morning. I tried download mode again but my computer still doesn't recognize it.

The phone ! Computer screen is download mode. This has happened because the last time you tried to use Odin the cable was pulled to soon. Open the Odin one click your trying to use while the phone is on that screen, and plug in the USB. If Odin does not recognize it you can look here for connection issues.

Heimdall and Odin won't work on same USB port. Have you tried using a different one?
Kinda a shot in the dark but if you haven't tried it yet, put the jig in before the battery. Or try the jig a couple times (wait like 20-30sec in between) with the battery in, that worked for me before.
Odin help
Hey Guys... I am trying to see if anyone can help me figure out the problem with my phone.. i currently have the stock rom running 2.2 i897uckb2
Kernel - 2.6.32.9 - Froyo build
Now I have trying to get Odin to recognize my phone when I am in download mode but it noes not show up in the port field. I have been trying both odin 1.3 as well as Odin 1 click...
The funny thing is that Heimdall can recognize the phone on one click but i am trying to get odin to recognize so that i can switch roms... I preffer Odin to Heimdall so if anybody has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.
By the way if i am not in download mode and the phone is on and I connect it and have odin on, it actually recognizes the phone... so not sure...
Thanks for any help guys...

Have you tried another USB port? My experience with heidmall is that when you install it's own driver, Odin no longer recognizes the phone when you boot into download mode. If for some reason it still doesn't work, I suppose you could uninstall your captivate drivers and re install them.
Ok... cuz really i did feel that it was because of the one click heimdall that the driver might not be recognized... Mind pointing me to how to un install and then re install the driver on the phone...?
Thanks again for the quick response.

Heimdall installs it's own drivers to the USB port you use it on. You will have to use another USB port if you wanna use Odin (Your pc should have more than one).
You could uninstall the drivers but it is far more complicated than just using a different USB port.
