I keep losing root after reboot, tried several kernels like Semaphore and CF-Root but after rebooting my phone i don't have root anymore, how can i fix this?
I have Faryaab deodexed JVS ROM

if you keep losing root, I would suggest that you need to do a complete clean and then re-install.
Copy anything important onto your PC, do a Titanium backup of your apps and copy that to your PC then do a complete clean and reinstall either using stock firmware or use the cleanse option with Tornado (use google)
After you should flash first your kernel with root and a stock firmware to confirm the problem is no longer present and only then flash a custom rom. If you again lose root then you will know it is not the kernel at all but the rom that is the source of your problems. Only then install back your apps.

Already solved the problem by wiping and installing Dark Core kernel but i think the wipe was not necessary.
Now i am just afraid of changing kernel because of losing root again, oh well
I keep loosing root even just after using Kingroot , which is the only rooting apk that seems to work on my SGH-i337Z 4.4.2 .
I run Kingroot and have root and I wanted to make a back up of it so when I install Skyfall ROM or another ROM I can restore to the back up if things go south or I just don't like the new ROM.
Right after doing the back up and I reboot . . . . . root is gone.
I have been searching the forum but have yet to find the reason why I loose root and or a " fix".
I can't seem to do back ups or reboot of any kind and still retain root.
Any ideas ?

I've looked around and cannot seem to get a straight answer about this. So I'll keep this short
My question being: If I have lost root is it safe/recommended to gain root again by restoring a NANDroid backup (with root) or by flashing a new ROM (with root) as long as I can get into CWM (even without root)?

You say you have lost root. I assume you're on one of the ICS roms?
Without root how you can restore nandroid backup?
CWM won't work without root.

Yes I am on an ICS rom (MidNoteV2.0). It says that I have root, then to go do a NANDroid backup, I have to flash the abyss kernel, reboot into that recovery, make the NANDroid backup, then flash CF-LP1 kernel.
Problem is that when I reboot now, I no longer have root privileges, but I can still reboot into CWM recovery.
Without root how you can restore nandroid backup?

And yes I can still get into CWM and restore backups, or flash new .zip s even when it says I have lost root
Is it possible that I may have lost a more superficial part of root, where apps are not allowed to gain super user permissions, but the core functions enabled by root are still available?

What you've got right now is partial root, and that's the plague of all early ICS Roms. You can forget about making useful nandroid backups. Restore brings back partially rooted Roms no good to anyone.
The only way to gain full root again would be to do it all over again, which means
rooted GB Rom
Chinese Repack through Mobile Odin
Desired ICS custom Rom (with wipes where the dev says).
And there is no other way to make sure you're properly rooted.
I've done it 3 times already.

Yea it sucks :/ but I've just been reflashing the original ICS ROM I was using. And haven't encountered too many issues so far.
When you say root GB rom then Chinese repack then install ICS ROM, you mean first flash back a GB rooted rom and kernel, then flash a Chinese kernel, then it's rom?
Initially I actually just rooted my GB stock rom, then immediately jumped to a ICS ROM that included the new kernel. And I didn't end up using Odin once, I somehow mnaged it all through CWM.

Am on criskelo 11.2 with speedmod kernel 3.13.
All is fine, it appears I have root (titanium etc works) and a check with 'got root' returns an ok response.
The phone is behaving itself nicely and is nice and smooth.
The problem comes when I try and do a nandroid backup using cwm.
It gets a liitle way in and then freezes (forever!)
Things I've tried to cure this...
1) Rolling back to stock GB and then re-rooting, then full 3 wipes, then reinstall criskelo rom.
2) Rolling back to a pre-rooted GB rom, then all 3 wipes, then re-install croskelo
2) Flashing other kernels, notecore etc
3) Installing superuser 3.1.1.zip with cwm and its binary update.zip
4) Installing SuperSU app from play store - it says needs to update binaries, and when I try it just says 'installation failed!'
5) Installing superuser app from play, this time when I try and update binaries it does helpfully say ' remounting /system as rw... fail!'
which leads me to believe this is a root problem, even though no other app is complaining.
6) doing a search on this forum (before you all tell me to do this!)
I have been trying to solve this for over a week now, and it feels like I have read everything on this forum but I may have missed something.
Can anybody steer me in the right direction please?
Maybe you dont need a nandroid backup, it doesnt backup efs anyway.
Could be a kernel issue, or space issue. Not sure.

Cheers, you might be right, but I have always used nandroid before flashing a new rom,
may I ask what you use to backup then, when you change rom?

Have you tried updating cwm? I believe older versions had this problem.

No I haven't Spyder, although I have tried a few different roms whic all have differing versions of cwm right?
which one is the latest then, and how do I install it, would it be an update zip?

I am a heavy flasher and prevent issues caused by restores to get a clean taste of roms. Nandroids I tried, but I havent found a rom I wanted to go back on always, flash so much that it just takes to long.
Efs with a tool in one if my threads, suggestion by Chasmodo. DrKetan has a good toolbox thread in general section.
I manually backup photos and such with a file explorer. Calander/Contacts/email in gmail,
whatsapp and special app stuff also manually transfer folder from sdcard and back.
Messages I dont care for. Neither made calls list.
Occasionally I do restore app if dissapeared from market with Titanium, but only app, not data. I save backups on external. Cause I clean sdcard also.

jonny, i feel your problem is due to partial root.
could you copy files into system in root explorer ?
did adaway work in applying hosts file ?
for criskelo rom too you should choose CF root kernel during the flashing process, then later you may change to your preference

I am running PA 1.99 now and it has the new cwm (you can tell because it has a grey background now!)
And rraaka, you are correct, I cannot copy anything to system
Not sure how I can get full root back though, I have used Dr Ketans rooting tool many times to try and cure this issue as well as flashing pre-rooted GB roms with Odin.
Not sure what else I can do.
But am starting to agree with baz now, I can do without nandroid (it takes ages anyway) and just use titanium to restore.
Everything is working fine with my partial root (except nandroid) anyway so not sure I care anymore!
Am enjoying Paranoid Android by the way, JB is fun.
I do miss the samsung apps though, I don't suppose those have been jellybeaned yet??
nope not yet, nothing Touchwizz like spen etc.
There is a cwm flashable of samsung apps that works pretty good on cm9, not sure if it works on cm10 or jb.
gaining full root shouldnt be to difficult, update binaries and then you know for sure.
The one that has worked wel for me is the ssu only zip from this post but then again thats on stock stuff.

For custom roms/kernels the ones supplied with it are build in to work out of the box.
Once fully clean install, a nandroid can work but thats fully clean

Ok, I have full root again now!
here's what I think I remember what I did...
Downloaded the first two Su & busybox zips using method1 on the link that Baz kindly shared with me and popped them on my sd card ready.

Downloaded and flashed the latest UK Carphone Warehouse stock ICS rom with odin.
Rebooted to stock recovery - applied update zip - flashed first the SU and then Busybox zips downloaded earlier.
Rebooted phone to check all was ok.
Located superSU app and ran it to check - and first it said it didn't recognise my phone model, hmmm...
So I downloaded mobile odin from play and flashed abyss 4.2 kernel
Rebooted to recovery, full 3 wipes and rebooted system.
Ran superSU again and magically it updated binaries and for the first time in 2 weeks it said 'sucessful', I was very pleased!
Rebooted to recovery and flashed Criskelo 11.2 again (have gone back to this from PA until things are a bit more stable)
Restored all my apps from TB all good.
Checked Adaway and it was more than happy to replace host file, and root explorer is also happy.

I rooted my device months ago, when my device was running ICS. When Samsung released Jelly Bean update, I downloaded the chinese version and flashed it using ROM Manager, before doing this I had backed up my current rom and saved it to my external SD card.
The Jelly Bean ROM that I had flashed to my handset drains my battery within a couple of hours, so I am looking to restore from the backup I made.
My problem is, when I flashed the ROM, my SU Binary files have gone missing from 'System/Bin/SU' and ROM Manager and Super SU no longer works. I don't know if this has anything to do with ROM Manager not being able to find the Back-Up Disk Image I have on my SD Card or not?
My question is, what is the easiest way to fix this? Can I root my device based on the ICS method I used originally, or will this not work due to having a different ROM? Can I just download the Binary files, then drag and drop into the system/bin folder? If so where can I get the binary files from?
Or can I restore my handset to the back-up I created and stick with custom ICS?

Without root ROM Manager cannot do any thing.
It's normal that you lost root after flashing a new ROM, except if you flash using Odin Mobile and choose keep root option.
Now at first you have to get back root, either follow : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360,
or flash a Philz kernel associated to your new ROM. That kernel includes root and is safe.

I think I may have stumbled across some other posts relating to the same problem I am having. It seems to be the sdcard0 issue.
The best you can do is to install safe kernel from phillz, make full wipes, install firmware of your choice and then root it again. I suggest you this bcs when you flash ROMs, w/o doing wipes your batter life wont be so good.
Hi, I'm running Benny's 4.3 (build number 3.04.651.2) Deodexed (because i do not see any .odex files in the system folder, right?) and I want to flash the update which keeps popping up in the notifications every 24 hours after clearing app data.
I tried doing the OTA update but my phone goes into TWRP. My biggest concern is flashing the stock rooted update because my phone really isn't rooted. I have SuperSu on the phone and sometimes I get "SuperSu has been granted permission" or something like that but Root Checker app says the phone does not have proper root access. I don't really know what is going on because I took my phone to a repair center to get it unlocked shortly after i got the official OTA 4.3 update. I read that you need to downgrade to 4.1 and then unlock the phone through SimUnlockHelper apk. When I got my phone back everything was working as it should and my phone is indeed unlocked.
My biggest concern is flashing a stock rooted rom because of the fact that my phone does not have proper root access. Would you recommend doing this and are there any precautions I should be aware of because I had nothing to do with rooting or tweaking android before since this is my first phone that runs android officially.

use the backup feature in twrp to make a nandroid and flash a stock rooted 4.3 rom. if it doesn't work restore your backup. if u need any info the sticky thread at the top of this section by bd19 will really help. read thoroughly. fyi you cannot ota with a custom recovery (twrp) you need stock recovery.

BTW, imo, it should work, but just backup just in case. Also, if something doesn't work, the real best method is just to download the newest version of the ROM, back (everything that's important to you) up, wipe everything in TWRP except Internal Storage (because this is where the flashable .zip is at!) and flash the ROM fresh.

Just flashed the stock rooted kitkat rom and everything is working as it was before, thank you all for your help!

i have already tried many different methods of rooting it. every one seems to go through the process of rooting it, but none of them actually give me root access. the last one i tried actually did install superuser, but i still don't have root access.
i've tried to root it from stock recovery and from CWM. at the moment, it has stock recovery on it.
it is a GT-S5830, android version is 2.3.6 firmware version is S5830NEKT2
this firmware version doesn't seem to be in the lists i've found of stock firmwares for this phone. the firmware came from 3 network, it was an update, installed with samsung kies.
i'd be happy to go ahead and install a custom rom, but everything i've read says i need to root first.

True, I can't find a firmware version S5830NEKT2 in the available list for our device. One thing you should know is always root your device first and then install CWM. If you install CWM first, then you will not be able to root your device. Assuming you have CWM installed now, here is what you should do,
1.Install CWM (if you already have it no problem) and perform wipes( Wipe data/ factory reset, Wipe cache partition, Mounts & Storage> Format /system, Advanced> Wipe Dalvik cache). This step is compulsory so as to remove all unnecessary files before you make a fresh installation of stock rom.
2.Install a stock firmware from here (since you are gonna install a custom rom later on, it doesn't matter which one you install. Firmware links in first post and installation details and necessary files in the second post. If you experience bootloop after flashing, go to stock recovery and do Wipe data/ factory reset and wipe cache partition & reboot).
3.Install Root from stock recovery.
4.Install CWM from stock recovery.
5.Reboot
That should be enough. Do post the result. Hope I Helped
cheers mate, i shall give that a go in a bit. i'm sorting out my girlfriend's phone for her, what would be a good rom for someone who doesn't want anything radically different or fancy? pretty much just want more responsiveness and less bloat. if i was doing it for myself i'd be wanting to try all the roms and tinker with it loads, but my girlfriend just wants her phone to work better.

Try AOSP Gingerbread for Cooper (assuming your gf's phone is Galaxy Ace S5830). This is the custom rom based on pure stock android for our device with less bloatwares and its much more cleaner and faster than CM based roms. The only problem is the data connection and the USB Mass Storage which you can solve using the fixes from here and here. Hope I Helped
