[Q] How do you rate your Incredible S? - HTC Incredible S

I'm in the market for a new phone and I was on the brink of getting an Incredible S but I then stumbled across a lot of pages of people reporting reception problems which make the phone unusable. However, I'm always wary of pages dedicated to reporting problems as you get only problems reported and very few people reporting the good aspects.
So what I'd like to know is whether any Incredible S users out there have reception problems such as dropped calls, lost SMS, messages arriving days late etc? These are the things that I'm seeing people reporting but I don't know quite how prolific these issues really are.
Thanks in advance.

this phone, for me, has been absolute perfection (no issues). not that the phone is perfect (almost is), but it really is a perfect match for my expectations/needs/wants AT THIS TIME (i'm sure my needs/wants will change in a few months). and you are going to hear a lot of different opinions because everybody has different needs/wants. also, everyone is on different carriers and setups. there are just too many variables.
again, imo, this phone suits me perfect at the moment and there are no issues for me.

I appreciate that there will be differing opinions about peoples expectations but hopefuly everyones expectations about how a phone should work as far as basic phone functionality shouldn't be too far apart - I imagine most people will want it to have reception when in known good reception areas without having to resort to bizarre hand contortions.
Things like camera and media playback are far more down to individual perception and as such I'm not overly interested in the majority of online reviews as they tend to deal mainly with the bells and whistles whereas I'm interested in the basic bread and butter functions which seem to be increasingly overlooked by phone reviewers.

i absolutely agree. a far as basic functions go, i haven't had any issues that i can think of. it just works. but again, that could be specific to my setup and carrier.

Best phone I've ever had by far..

The IncS has exceeded my expectations. I bought an unlocked Canadian Bell Mobile model on eBay and I am using in on AT&T network here in US. I have not had any reception issues, dropped calls or experienced delays in SMS messages.

no issues, and so far the best fit phone for my needs. 4.0" display is just right for some1 to hold the phone and get the best of both worlds feel. and no reception issues or whatsoever. just the sms delay and call delay problem but that is rom problem. just make sure u get the froyo one then you're pretty much good to go

completely agree. had a 4.3" phone but felt just a bit too big/clumsy.

This phone is awesome, dont have any problems with missing calls or sms. Only negative aspect for me is 4.0 display, it`s a bit big for me, next phone would be 3.7 or 3.5.

i absolutely agree. the screen is the best part of the phone. it's beautiful and the size is perfect for me.

a great phone, also he dive into a bucket with water and survive it

Phones amazing. Never experienced an issue and never needed to run a process that my phone couldn't handle. However using the stock ROM I did experience lag and slowdown yet after installing a custom ROM I've never experienced lag.

Just as others have said (although another voice could only convince you more ), I have had no problems with this phone. Does everything I need it to do, and does it very well!

With cm7 I feel like the phone is waiting for me, and I'm the one lagging lol

Best Android phone I've had so far, with excellent battery life on moderate usage (more than 2 days), screen is absolutely amazing, no lag so far, the stock Rom 2.3 is a bit dinky but that's ok as well. Bluetooth is absolutely great, I can actually connect and make phone calls with my car kit, with the phone in my pocket. Audio quality is great as well, the camera video recording is not what I was expecting, but I believe it's software thing...

OK, thanks for all the reassuring replies. I've just placed my order for the phone so it should be with me in a day or so. I'm guessing it will be newer stock though and that it won't be rootable at this point but as long as it is able to send and receive calls/SMS then I'm happy to wait and see if an unlock solution crops up.

The new stock isn't root-able?

I may have mis-read (I've read that many pages while deciding which phone to buy) but I was led to believe that the newer phones have a different version of hboot that isn't yet rootable.

[Q] Debating on making the switch

I'm a current iPhone 3G owner and I'm due for an upgrade. I was at the AT&T store last week buying my girlfriend an iPhone4(ironic, right?) and saw the Captivate. I picked up the phone and fell in love, I love the screen, love the interface, loved everything about it. My immediate reaction was, I need to have this phone, this is going to be my upgrade. I start reading around websites and forums and all I've been reading is negative things about the Captivate.
My question is, is the Captivate an upgrade over the 3G and is there really that many issues with it? I'm growing tired of the same ole, bland ole iPhone and love the customazation available with the Cap.
Thank you.
Of cause it is an upgrade to your 2 year old iPhone 3G. This is the world of tech.
And yes, there is a lot of issues too. Because there is no perfect thing in this world.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I came from an iphone 3G, and it is definitely an upgrade from the iphone, yet a learning curve because the 2 OS' are completely different! But so worth the switch!!

I don't think I'll have any problems with anything tech wise, reading around seeing all the issues is what really has detered me from this phone. I think I'm going to make the switch..
You won't regret it. There are fixes for most things, the only issue I have thats still nagging is the GPS problem.

Well, yes, of course the Captivate is an upgrade over the iPhone 3G; the screen alone (nonetheless the rest of its specs) should make that obvious.
Lastly, the only problems I really know with the Captivate is some having GPS issues, and the phone experiencing lag. Otherwise, everything is pretty much an acquired taste due to the switch from iOS to Android. If the Captivate will be your first Android phone, then I can pretty much assure you that that part --switching OSes -- will be the hardest.
I came from a 3GS and felt like it was an upgrade in every possible way, except the Marketplace. It's not quite there yet, but catching up fast.
There are a lot of problems with the phone, but I will tell you this. You will probably have to go through a handset or two (maybe more in some cases) before you find one that works as you expect. Don't be shy about exchanging the handset till you strike gold and don't see anything outside of the GPS issue, which is an admitted software fix from Samsung.
Outside of that, you will be overwhelmed at first. Learning a new OS is always a bit daunting, but when it's an open source OS it's even more so. You have to get yourself into the mindset of how to do things, as opposed to if you can do them. Tons of customization and software choices. The phone really lets you flex your personalization muscles. If you don't like the browser, download a different one. If you don't like the music player, there are 10 more to take it's place.

[Q] Need your Advice guys. Thinking of buying the 2x

Hi guys
Basically I've been a windows mobile user for ages now, had the omnia i900 for quite some time now, and i think its time to move on.
I've been thinking allot of buying this phone because it has an excellent value for money. Simplyelectronics.com has it listed for like 300 euros and here in my country(Cyprus) its 550 or something, which is ALLOT. So I've read allot of reviews and everything, but I would like to know what YOU guys think, how it is for everyday use.
Any problems or annoying stuff about it, and also if it's easy to use and easy to carry around, although is that big.
I really appreciate it.
Cheers
I changed to a custom rom almost immediately after I got my phone, so not sure about the stock software. I am using DJDroid rom atm, and I like the battery life and have no problem with everyday use.
It should be the best value for money phone until xiaomi phone arrives.
Hardware good, software bad, customize it and it's a goodun.
I'm also very interested in this phone. This is mainly because of it's killer hardware as well as the poor software as this has caused the price to fall to a reasonable level. Poor software can easily be fixed by flashing a custom Rom/kernel.
I also think it looks very nice
Thanks guys.
You're great.
How bout the feel of the thing. Does it feel bulky, or thick?
What do u think
It is 10.9mm which is slim, even to todays standards.
Just placed my order.
Really great value for money.
You guys have been really helpful, cause i read allot of threads about random reboots and stuff, and i thought they were hardware issues or smthn.
Anyway
Thanks a bunch
Cheers
I would buy the 2x. With the latest stock rom, it's smooth and stable.
I love it!
I dunno what anyone has agaisnt the stock rom with the exception of the bloatware crap that lg bundle in with it i havnt had any issues, no overheating, no random shutdowns or restarts, its been fast and responsive.
Maybe some people just dont know how to use their phone and have to get cyanogen to handle it for them.
Its a good Handy.
You can buy it.
I also think it's a great phone when you look at its price. I am really happy with it
its great if you dont use bluetooth audio and radio. otherwise dont buy it!

BT Audio? Really? Just A2DP or other audio-related profiles?
I was aware of A2DP issues with certain ROMs, but are you aware of any issues with the HSP (headset profile)?

Optimus Black vs Sprint Marquee

When I heard the Optimus Black was coming to Sprint USA in the form of the LG Marquee, I was very excited.
But it appears that the Sprint version was not met with the same positive reception. Users complained about poor battery (one person even said it seems to run out faster than it can charge), dropped signal randomly, and general screen lag during transitions.
I finally got a chance to use one in a store display recently (wrote about the experience here), and I must admit it seemed to have more screen lag than any of the other devices on display, even compared to an Optimus S (Optimus One variant). There are some folks who are tweaking it to work for them and like it well enough, but I recall hearing such great things about the Optimus Black, so I'm wondering where the discrepancy lies between these two devices.
Could it be Gingerbread?
The Marquee ships with Gingerbread, which LG did a horrible job implementing on the Optimus S. In fact, Sprint pulled the Gingerbread update on the Optimus S after numerous complaints about battery life and poor performance. Could it be that LG jumped the gun on this and should have stuck to Froyo?
What do you Optimus Black owners think of all this?
Well if this is true, then it does make sense why LG is still not releasing GB update for OB. Perhaps they may be trying to make it less bug than Marquee.
Can't say more untill GB is released officially for OB.

That is the case i imagine as the android 2.3 Gingerbread on the US Sprint version is not the full Gingerbread as i have read in several sites but its a very close Gingerbread release thats why it is so buggy
So they will be making it more stable and final release for the P970 whenever they decide its finished
Dishe,
When I am interested in a product, I normally do some research on it 1st. I go to forums expecting to read the pros & cons. Obviously, forums are filled with posts & threads (from people like yourself) that express their opinions of a specific product. I have no problem with that at all. I know how to filter through posts that are BS. I don't have any problem with differences of opinions, nor a problem with someone out there doesn't like this phone or has had a negative personal experience with it....but I do have a problem w/ false or incorrect information.
Which is why I have a problem w/ your posts. You have gone on multiple different forums/websites& repeatedly posted negative, some false & unconfirmed information about a phone a) you don't personally own & b) have not really given a fair amount of time with (messing with a store Demo imo doesn't count). Either way, there have been more people (like myself) that have posted numerous POSITIVE reviews/fixes/advice about this phone you seem to ignore. More importantly, even with these suggestions out there, you repeatedly continue to post information that is confusing & contradicting to someone that might be interested in purchasing this specific phone.
BTW, before continuing to post incorrect information about Sprint new return policy. As I have not seen ANYWHERE (except for your posts) that Sprint only will give you 14 days to return from the date the order is placed or when the phone ships. I am actually pretty sure it's from the day the phone is received in hand & gets activated on the account. Anyways, it might be worth it for you to check on that & be sure to 100% confirm your information WITH SPRINT before posting that again.
You have implied LG might have a problem w/ Gingerbread. If your opinion is based on the pulled Gingerbread release for the Optimus S & if so what does it have to do with this phone?? Gingerbread seems to be working just fine on my LG Marquee. In addition, I do not think it was released for this phone pre-maturely.
This phone has never been promoted as a "replacement for the Optimus S" (once again, except with your posts). Although with SOME carriers it shares the Optimus name....but it doesn't with Sprint. In fact, you can still purchase a brand new Optimus S today from Sprint if you wanted to. Which tells me, this is just another phone in the Sprints product line....is it an improvement from the Optimus S?? Yes, absolutely....but not a direct replacement.
As to why Sprint isn't promoting this phone?? Who knows & more importantly who cares. Stop looking for some conspiracy theory or personal vendetta....My conclusion?? I am sure over the last month the iPhone release has squashed most of the promotion for newer phones (the LG Marquee isn't the only phone suffering right now from a lack of promotion).
This phone will not perform at the same levels as 4G phones (iPhone, Evo, Epic, Nexus). If you think it will or are expecting it to, prepare to be disappointed. This phone should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as those phones. Although physically similar to the Optimus Black, this IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PHONE internally...it shouldn't be compared to the LG Esteem (Metro PCS) either. It's apples & oranges here & once again should not be compared.
This phone was never promised to be anything more than a mid level 3G Android phone. Everything I have read from either LG or Sprint has never implied otherwise. With the exception of the LED notification that is in the manual (most likely a misprint), there has not been any info printed, released or promised about this specific phone (LG MARQUEE) from either manufacturer that hasn't been delivered. If you want gorilla glass, it doesn't have it....it also doesn't have a the same dedicated camera button as the Optimus S but DOES have a dedicated hard button (set as the Camera button by default) although it does not seem to support a half-way press to lock focus. It also does not have a slide out keyboard so if you want one/or must have it, THIS PHONE IS NOT FOR YOU.
LAG/STUTTER
The only negative thing I have found is there is an initial lag, stutter, lack of "smoothness" with the STOCK launcher program of this phone. In addition, I couldn't find a way to customize it to my liking. So I downloaded Launcher Pro which for those who don't know is a different Launcher App found in the Market. There is a free & paid version. I also tried ADW Launcer as well (pretty sure there is only a paid version). I liked them both as they both have alot of customization options, but personally I like Launcher Pro a little better. I can't even tell you why. It's just the one I decided on & it works for me.
SIGNAL ISSUE
There were 1-2 people that initially posted they had a signal issue. it was also made it VERY clear in follow up posts that the signal problem MAY NOT HAVE BEEN THE PHONE but most likely because they were in a low signal area. For the record, I have not experienced ANY drop outs, missed calls, or signal problems with the TWO LG Marquee phones that I personally own (since October 13th).
SCREEN RESPONSE
There was 1 person that reported a screen response issue....no one else, that I can find has been able to recreate or had the screen response problem. Again, I have not experienced ANY screen response issues or problems with the TWO LG Marquee phones that I personally own (since October 13th).
BATTERY LIFE
Yes, there are phones out there w/ better Battery life. With that said, there is a very helpful post (the one you hijacked) with really good tips on how to improve the Battery life of this phone. For the record, I applied most (not all) of the tips to my TWO LG Marquee phones that I personally own & am able to get 18-24 hours of pretty steady use without having to recharge. Your comment of "put the phone in airplane mode" doesn't really make sense & no one ever said to that btw (just you). Every tip mentioned still allows you to receive calls & texts. Here's the deal, with any phone shutting off a function that is not being used will increase your Battery life in the long run.
Brightness - If you keep the phone at 100% brightness, your battery will drop quickly. If you can adjust it & keep it lower it may help improve your Battery life.
Keeping the Data Sync, GPS, Bluetooth and Wifi are on (even they aren't being used) will drain the battery. Shutting them off when not in use will help improve Battery life. There is a free power control widget that comes with the phone but for more customization options, the EXTENDED CONTROLS App is recommended.
btw...there are more tips...search & you will find.
ROOT
This phone can be rooted....very easily. Again search & you will find.
ACCESSORIES:
Since the Marquee is a PHYSICAL clone of the Optimus Black accessories are VERY EASY TO FIND. Search Google, Amazon, eBay, etc.
In closing, if you are reading this, my goal wasn't to bash Dishe as much as it was to provide a different perspective & info to help anyone interested or looking at Sprint's LG Marquee. I personally own two of these phones & coming from a Touch Pro 2, I couldn't be happier. I am looking forward to more people getting this phone so together we can make it even better.
Aha...
Only one question for you, how much does Sprint or LG pay for your services?
- If they pay you a lot, congratulations, you are doing a good job.
- If they pay you a little or just nothing... I don't understand your way to appear into a forum and post this great manifest in your very first post... incredible.

Nosajsam is very active in the Android Central forum for the Marquee.
What he says in his post is true and is gleaned from the experience of users that have posted in that forum.
The problem that he, I and others at Android Central have with "dishe" is that he has been ripping the Marquee for a couple of weeks in any forum he can post in and he doesn't even have the phone and hasn't even held one until a couple of days ago.
Please refer to http://forums.androidcentral.com/sprint-lg-marquee/118994-marquee-improvements-over-optimus-s-2.html post #13.
We (from Android Central) don't mind someone pointing out flaws and giving opinions as long as they have at least used the phone for more that a demo in a phone store.
Good job, guys. Go ahead and deny the issues so that no one is interested in fixing them. At least I'm trying to figure out what happened here. For the record, nosa is coming from a windows mobile 6.5 device. As his first Android experience, I'm sure he is plenty impressed. But it would appear that those upgrading from another android device do not have good things to say. And I'd like to find out where lg deviated.
But it doesn't matter. I'm not here to troll or give negative opinions. These guys just get really defensive about this product. I would like to help bring the marquee up to the performance it SHOULD be capable of. All you two seem to do are get defensive and say everything is fine and I don't know what I'm talking about. Good luck with that.
Meanwhile, as far as wanting consumers to get the right idea- I agree, but not sure if the opinion of someone who has been using a touch pro 2 all this time is as helpful as you think. Sprint's policies have changed recently, ask them yourself. Folks have been reported this for a while, my own brother got screwed with a different phone, and at least one person who tried to get the marquee almost did as well. If I were researching a phone, followed your advice and then got stuck with this, I'd likely be pretty angry at you. What you have to remember is that this is your opinion. I am entitled to mine and we are both allowed to share and disagree. You think mine is invalid because it is based on other users posts and a very limited actual time with the device, and I think yours is invalid because you are new to the scene and don't have enough background to compare it to. Both may have merit. But your tone here is uncalled for.
I apologize to xda for bringing their hostility here. Thankfully they do not represent all of this or that other forum.

Again, there are more & more people posting positive reviews & experiences EVERYDAY (that you ignore) & in the meantime you still seem to think this phone has a problem. Its not a matter of denial here...there have not been any consistent reported issues yet with the Sprint LG MARQUEE that need to be fixed. (by consistent I mean acknowledged with ALL owners of) Please don't misunderstand, the Marquee isn't perfect but with very simple tweaks (apps &/or settings) it can perform better....btw isn't this the case w/ EVERY phone??
Your Optimus S which I am VERY familiar with (my Brother, Mom, Dad & Sister in Law own them) was not initially without its share of problems. I can almost guarantee you were not 1st in line when the Optimus S came out because if you were, you would know exactly what I am talking about. We are also discussing a phone (Optimus S) that has been out for over a year with tons of support from people & developers continuously coming up with ways to make that phone better. The tweaks & improvements that can be applied to that Optimus S as of today, are not at all close to what it was upon it's initial release. The Marquee has been out less than 1 month & as you even mention, has not been widely available in Sprint stores (although, my local Radio Shack & Best Buy has had it in stock from Day 1). My point is the Marquee is still a baby. I am sure in time the more people mess with it, more & more improvements will be found...
Listen, I may not be thrilled w/ Sprints new 14 day return window either, but complaining about it has nothing to do w/ this phone or its performance. So mentioning it in each of your posts seems irrelevant to me.
Although its true, I have not posted here frequently but as it was mentioned, I am very active in other forums. Regardless of my post count, I would hope my opinion has WAY more merit to someone considering buying this phone, since I actually OWN THE DEVICE (2 of them).

Ok, wanna shut me up on this issue? Post links to some of them, and I'll post links to the complaints. We'll see who has more. But it shouldn't matter, because the very fact that there ARE some to link to means that at least some folks have returned the phone due to legitimate problems. I'm not here to play "he said/she said".
Its not a matter of denial here...there have not been any consistent reported issues yet with the Sprint LG MARQUEE that need to be fixed. (by consistent I mean acknowledged with ALL owners of)

Dear l-rd, is that your criteria? If Bob's mom likes the phone despite everyone else having severe problems it is, it must not be a real problem?
I really think you might be alone in this definition.
Please don't misunderstand, the Marquee isn't perfect but with very simple tweaks (apps &/or settings) it can perform better....btw isn't this the case w/ EVERY phone??

Yes, but some devices more than others. Some devices, like the Sanyo Zio, were doomed from the start because of an underpowered GPU. And others, like the original Samsung Transform (not the new Ultra, which admittedly seems kind of nice), had performance problems that may have been driver related, however were never properly fixed. I followed that one for a while too.
While I can't vouch for the battery and other issues since I'm only basing that on complaints heard from people who returned (or tried to return) the device, I can tell you first hand that the Marquee was laggier than any of the other devices on display (which included other 3G devices in the same class, such as the Moto Admiral and XPRT). All running a stock launcher. And comparing to demonstrations of the Optimus Black, there is definitely a discrepancy here somewhere. Something went wrong because we know it COULD be better, even strictly speaking of stock experiences.

Again, be careful about what you assume.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg...de-rooting-custom-roms-optimus-s-edition.html
I was, actually one of the early adopters of the Optimus S. We didn't have Clockwork mod or custom roms, or even JIT back then. I was a part of the scene for all of that, even contributed when I could to the collective. Do you know why I bought the Optimus back then versus the Transform?
Because it was smooth out of the box. Because without any tweaking, it had more FPS than the HTC EVO when conducting OpenGL 3D tests. Because LG did something right, and actually stood out as a smooth user experience.
Again, out of the box. No tweaking required. A stock Optimus S has much better performance than a stock Marquee, side by side. As well as just about any other device on display in the store that is a current generation handset.
Meanwhile, a better question to you in all this, is why do you feel the need to follow me around and post your personal vendetta against me in random threads across the internet?
Squirrel!
I have the Marquee and I am quite happy with it. My only complaint is the short battery life but a bit of tweaking should fix that. I received mine a few days after it was released.
I have a BS in computer science and quite a bit of experience with Android. Take it for what its worth

How did you fix the battery life? Mine drains like a mofo
Try the suggestions from here:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...improve-your-battery-life-responsiveness.html
Using these suggestions, most of us see around 3% per hour drop in battery and see 18-24 hours of life with moderate use.
I would also recommend Juice Defender Ultimate from the market. A very worthwhile investment.
Also, one thing to keep in mind is that cell signal really impacts your life. If you spend most of your day in an area that has only one bar or intermittent signal, you are going to have a struggle to keep your Marquee alive.

[Q] Can the Captivate be functional for non-hobbyists?

I don't want to make trouble, but I'm hoping there can be a dialog as to the viability of the Captivate as a long-term, stable cell phone.
Like probably everyone here, I found the ROM AT&T supplied for the Captivate to be practically (if not criminally) unusable even if I didn't care about my rights to do what I want with it (but I do). Thus I decided that I needed to flash it with something better.
Obviously, there are a lot of Captivate owners who work very hard (and presumably, enjoy) modifying and tweaking the Android system for their phone - and that's great - but I'm not one of them. I appreciate that people like to change the look of their <object> and that the latest-and-greatest functionality is an ever-moving target, but paramount to me for everything in my life is minimal maintenance.
I don't really care about flashy eye-candy and holiday color schemes if it is moderately consistent. I am not looking to squeeze the last 2% (or even 10%) of possible speed out of my phone, but I do want it to respond to my input within a few tenths of a second (faster w/ typing) unlike the stock ROM. I have to use a lock-code, so I don't give a fig about the number of lock screens. If I could flash my phone and never have a need (note: not desire) to do it again, that would be fantastic. If I have to re-flash it once every 6 months and don't need to (re)read long (long!) meandering threads with cryptic and often conflicting and (possibly - how to tell?) outdated information, I could live with that.
Basically, it seems like I have to choose between a fixed, official ROM that sucks, or a sea of ever-changing ROMs with stability problems and a lot of focus on look-and-feel.
I'm not here crying about not having the perfect phone experience, rather I'm interested in the opinion of you here, "in the know", as to whether there exists a Captivate ROM that is stable in both the short-term (little to no crashes or unplanned reboots) and in the long term (will function similarly for months when not tweaked beyond what say, TiBu or AdAway would do).
This is something I've been wondering for months now (as my Serendipidy ROM grew ever-more unstable), but it has come to a head now because my wife is insisting that I encounter so many problems with my Cappy (currently experiencing various problems with Serenity) that I need to get a new phone (and it should be an iPhone like hers). I am as jealous at her stability, battery life and lack of problems as I am loathe to sell my soul to live in the walled garden with the iDevil.
If the world of smart phones is really a choice among the walled garden, the astro-turfed basement and the slopes of a volcano in the jungle, then I will have to accept that and choose my fate. If the problem is Samsung/AT&T and Android is simply ambrosia on some other device/carrier (as my colleague claims), then I would love to know that too.
Sorry for the dissertation and thanks for the thoughts.

I bought my wife a 4gs on launch day, and its smooth but not without a few faults. The amount of repeat info here can turn into a maze of discouragement, but I think just a little more effort might yield the results you want. I'm currently running mosaic 8 with the latest semiphore kernel and its very stable to say the least.

So, your view is that the Captivate and/or Android phones are best used by people who have both the skills and time to regularly - if not constantly - rebuild and tweak hidden and background settings always at some risk of bricking their several-hundred dollar device, and you see the iPhone as the proper choice for people who simply want something that works for their day-to-day use?
That's worse than what everyday users had to manage with DOS or in the early days of Linux or Windows 95. At least with those, your hardware wasn't (usually) at risk.
Is there no solution for those in the middle who want something that works day-to-day and allows them some freedom to make minor changes like block ads and install "unapproved" apps? Are they simply out of luck?

Cm7. Wipe data factory reset again after flashing, let it sit for 10 mins after first boot but before you sign in.
My vibrant was perfectly stable that way.

MIUI, great fast ROM. All you have to do is flash the small update every week and everything stays the same. You don't loose data!
If you don't feel like doing the update every single week just skip a few here and there. Or got the latest Gingerbread leak(KK4) and use it. It is stable, has great battery life, and pretty fast, but still can't compare to MIUI/CM7 speeds!
I'm not sure what you mean by stock AT&T ROM being no good. I've used a Captivate that had the official AT&T stock 2.2 on it, and it was pretty darn good. I then loaded the "stock" AT&T gingerbread leak on it, and it was even better. Almost no lag at all, GPS worked great, and battery life was excellent. I think you're just complaining for the sake of complaining.

I tried to use the stock 2.2. I really did. I was getting random shutdowns and reboots all the time and the lag, oh the lag! I can't tell you how many times I would hit an on-screen button and nothing would happen. I would hit it again a second or three later or try a different on screen-button, and still nothing. Thinking the app had crashed, I would hit home or back. Another second or two after that, everything I had done would process in a millisecond and I would be back at the home screen with no idea what I had done as the "extra" touches would register as some other command on the screens that followed and I didn't see.
Once I reflashed the first time, the lag went away and the shutdowns greatly diminished, but since then I have had various other problems. Things like:
- the phone telling me I had a cell signal when I didn't and because I don't make many outgoing calls or texts I just thought nobody wanted to talk to me. Meanwhile people were getting mad that I wasn't getting back to them.
- Apps "uninstalling" by themselves sometimes with a generic icon to replace them. Re-installing them sometimes worked and sometimes didn't (with the same app).
- Texts that come in 5 hours after they were sent and 2 hours after I emerged into a strong cell signal (I work in a sub-basement).
When I tried the KK4 stock, everything did seem to work well until I actually tried to use it as a phone. It said I had signal and I had data connection, but most calls would simply never dial, and while it would ring and I could see who was calling, I couldn't answer. This seems particularly bizarre to me as you would think the ROM/modem pair should work with all Captivates.
If you want stability, I'd recommend Firefly or Andromeda. They are both older and are Froyo builds, but ultra stable.
And I concur the out of the box Cappy 2.1 build was unusable...it's how I ended up here at xda! Unlike you however, I found that I do like tweaking my phone, and I've done some amount of that...not without peaks and valleys, but I currently really enjoy the Mosaic ROM with Semaphore JVZ kernel.

Unfortunately, it's shaping out that way. And it's only getting worse as time goes on and the fragments march in their separate directions. When there's 20 different fundamental ROMS (Sense, TouvhWiz, all the variations and so on), and 4000 different phones it becomes increasingly difficult to provide a consistent quality experience.
The worst part being I don't see a way out for Google or a light at the end of the tunnel for consumers short of starting over, which presents more problems than it solves.

Actually, I think tweaking can be fun sometimes, but between work, family, house, etc. I'm usually stumbling through on 5 hours of sleep a night as it is (good thing I don't drive to work!). I simply don't have time to tweak, and I definitely can't be without a phone for a day or two.

This is my hope.
I have had Cognition 5 on my phone since it was released. It has been the ultimate experience for me. Stable, GREAT battery life, awesome response, etc. It is the Plain Jane of ROMs and I won't use anything else.
at least not until a stable, working version of ICS is out. I've recently got my hands on a free captivate and have been using it as a testbed for ICS. Once I am satisfied, I will flash my everyday use Cappy to ICS and be done with flashing on this phone until I can upgrade this summer.
Im in your boat somewhat. I want all features of the device to work and I dont want reboots etc. Stability is critical.
For Froyo, Firefy 3.0 ROM gave up uptimes of 7-8 days without issue. I only rebooted once battery ran out.
GB ROMs Ive tried are all more unstable, but I have been on Illuminance 3.01 for over a week now and its running quite good. I reboot often though as I swap batteries, so I cant speak to up time but it goes over a day easily. Im using the ICS theme with it so it feels like I have a new device also.
Now that we have KK4 source I think we will see stability improve even more.
I see too many problems with the ICS builds so far but they are alpha afterall. Impressive progress from the devs working on it however!
Eventually my idea is to take the best of all the leaks and make a rock solid stable hybrid rom. Though most devs, including myself, try to cater to the masses. It seems what you are looking for isn't very popular. Most want more and better in their roms, i've tried both and still not overly successful at either. But it doesn't stop me from trying to create the best of both worlds. A solid stable rom with nice features, that doesn't deteriorate in performance over time. Hopefully a hybrid rom will solve a lot of issues we all face with the cappy.
The thing the iphone has going for it is the fact it is one manufacturer, apple. All the iphones are the same, same processor, same hardware, same specs, same, same, same. It makes it easy to have a tight knit development for the phone, so it is less prone to issues. But because of this tight, closed architecture, you don't have allot of choices as far as styles and hardware. Android and Windows, on the other hand, have multiple manufacturers and many choices of processors, hardware and styles to choose from. So it is much more difficult for Google and phone manufacturing developers to cater to all of the different phones and have each one run flawlessly. The same holds true for Linux and Windows with PC's. But I think the cappy has some of the best developers on XDA making great ROMs for it and these ROMs don't necessarily cater to hobbyists, they cater to captivate users in general.
Sometimes good things come to those who wait...

In my own opinion, I think one of the best ROM's out there, and quite frankly possibly the most stable I've run to date is Phoenix Unleashed. It's Froyo JS8, and was the last of the 2.2 ROM's Adam put out. It was a ROM I would absolutely go to IF I ever got tired of flashing ROM's(don't really see that happening) and wanted to just have a phone that worked and worked well.
I'm too busy now playing with ICS.......but that is a story for another day

[Q] Incredible S v/s Desire HD

Hello all,
I'm new on here as you can see. I've searched the forums for a possible answer to this question, but haven't found much in way of comparisons. I didn't know whether to post it on the IS or DHD forum so I thought I'd just post it on here.
I bought a Desire Z through a rather popular seller on eBay (I'm sure those in the know will probably be able to figure it out) and rest assured the experience has been average at best. The first Desire Z I bought had issues with the motherboard (would shut off unexpectedly) I searched for and tried all the solutions proposed on here, and while it's stable now, I'll likely return it. While the replacement would work fine, it wouldn't charge when plugged in (it charges for 5-10 seconds before the battery meter stopped moving). When I took it for repairs, they said it was irreparable because the charging port is too close to the mainboard to be tinkered with. Anyways, because it's too late for me to get a refund, I've been offered an Incredible S or a Desire HD as a free upgrade. I've done all the comparisons et al between these two phones and wanted your feedback on them. Aside from the obvious differences can anyone comment on the build quality/reliability of these two phones beyond the specs? I read somewhere online that the incredible S is "more stable" and has a "better monitor" (whatever that means). Also, is it a plus that HTC made it upgradable to 4.0.4 while didn't offer the upgrade to the Desire HD? Since I'm new to all this, I don't plan on rooting the phones anytime soon. Look forward to the replies.
Thanks
Both phones are almost the same hardware (soc, ram) . Most difference: Desire Hd have bigger LCD 4.3 vs 4.0 inches and battery in incredible s are better..

Yes, IncS got official ICS from HTC, when the DHD did not.
That does not really matter though, as there are many custom roms that are ICS for DHD, ported from other phones.
At the end of the day, it is your choice. I prefer the IncS because it is lighter and sexier, plus we have szeszo to cook us awesome roms. But DHD has got more developers, as it was the HTC flagship of 2011.
Keep in mind that if you are not planning to root, neither phones will perform on par with today's phones, as the chips are really outdated.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess my main concern was the build quality, stability and reliability more than anything else. LamboBull, I'm aware of that. I'll probably root it eventually, when I get some time to read the ins and outs of it. However, I tend to use it for really basic stuff. Mainly, text messaging, internet when on the go, WhatsApp, Viber and occasionally books to read. I rarely use it for anything intensive such as music, videos etc.
