I've spent most of the day looking for something new to read, before realising i should have asked here first!
Fiction or non-fiction, the kind of writers i've enjoyed in the past include, but not limited to:
James Herbert
Michael Connelly
Mark Billingham
Ian Rankin
Bill Bryson
Joy Adamson
Michael Crichton
John Connolly
Terry Pratchett
Douglas Adams
Physics, Nature, Cosmology, History, WWI, WWII..
Should be enough to go on! Post up your recommendations or just list your favourites. Read something new recently? Rate it here.
Clive Barker is a great writer (in my opinion). He's normally thought of as a horror writer, mainly due to the success of Hellraiser (The Hellbound Heart) and Candyman (The Forbidden), but I prefer his fantasy stuff as I love the philosophical/cosmological edge he has.
I could not recommend these books any more as I truly believe they changed the way I look at the world...
Imajica
Weaveworld
The Great and Secret Show (1st in a trilogy - only 2 completed so far though)
Bad Science by Ben Goldacre is a really good read, if you haven' read it already.

Thanks.

That was brilliant! As i don't like Science Fiction or Fantasy, clicking the links eventually led me to Orwells Animal Farm. A great book, but i've already read the classics.

Hey dirk,
+1 for the Clive barker, weaveworld is a good place to start.
I'm also a big fan of Ian banks - dig in to Wasp Factory.
One final recommend would be Life of Pi. - a truly wonderful read.
Mark Tufo's Zombie Fallout series (there's 4 plus a short prequel), you'll love them, especially if you enjoyed Stephen King's the Stand.

'The Stand' Is my favourite book of all time! Would you be one of Mother Abigail's people's.. or a follower of Flagg? Better to reign in hell, or serve in Heaven?
I was always the Larry Holmes of the story. Deeply flawed but, essential to outcome. Stu Redmond was the obvious hero, but wasn't there to make the sacrifice at the end.

Zombie Fallout is like the Stand, but with zombies, a great family with plenty of sarcasm between them, and Henry; the bulldog with rectal eminations that Hans Blix should be investigating! Oh and pop tarts, somehow there's always pop tarts.
Best of all they're only a couple of quid each.
Stephen Kings "The Dark Tower" series. It should keep you busy for a while

Also, this passage from the Bible:
The Way of Love
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned,a but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love."

None taken. In fact i completely agree, although the aforementioned curvaciousness shouldn't only apply to females. I mean, i'm as guilty as the next guy for objectifying people on the basis of their appearance, but it's not every day that you see a fellow forumite like Milad in the flesh.. and i'm sure you'll agree that it's understandable if one finds themselves carried away in the moment.
After all, knowing Milad as i do, it's safe to say that he's not all about the pleasing aesthetics... Ok, he may be somewhat a good looking fella in his own right, (and tbh that whole outfit is really doing it for me), but he also has a great mind behind the facade, and it's a little shallow of people to judge him on his stunning good looks alone. Have a heart, the man has personality and character too you know?
I'd post a picture of myself but i'm too afraid people would either objectify, or more likely, ridicule me instead.

I find it comical that you question peoples' mental age that use the word "bro" in the forum, and then use Urban Dictionary as a reference.
i was in a meeting once at one of the automotive dealerships that i worked at, the general manager and the dealer principle called each other bro a few times during the meeting.. one of them i would say late 50's and the other early 60's.. i actually thought nothing of it. im 37ish ..use bro all the time...bro!
age??
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the future of space exploration. The new Halo trailer had me thinking about how many visions of mankind's expansion into the stars leading to awakening or discovering things that aren't good for our health. Aliens, Predators--though of course they come to earth on their own anyway--Necros from Dead Space, and many more.
On the other hand, even with some of that bad that comes in Prometheus it is one film that I can say was so stunning that it made me want to hop a ship and sail the stars. Star Trek, Babylon 5, and Star Wars also offer a blend of the good with the bad when it comes to what might await us.
The odds of us being the only life of note in the entire universe is unlikely, so what shall our travels bring us? Will we find peace and prosperity, unending conflict between our own selves and with other beings, or some blend of both? :silly:
We know next to nothing about it since we have only really gotten to explore/study our solar system. So all I can say is that whatever we find will be monumental.
Pretty sure we're the only form of life in all of existence.

I think there is life out there. Think about history, every species that has walked or even lived on this planet. Earth is a tiny spec in the universe. Its like looking at a grain of sand and saying "this is the only grain of sand on this planet."
Plus, how do you think we got here? Probably microbes living in ice on a meteor. Most of our water came as ice from space, and we have found microbial life living under extreme conditions (pressure, heat, cold)

That's pretty stupid. There are roughly 300 billion stars in our galaxy (milky way). Let's say that each star have 4 planets circling. That's a potensial of 1.2 trillion planets in OUR galaxy alone. NASA estimates that there are roughly a total of 125 billion galaxies in the universe (2002 numbers), and each of those galaxies have hundreds of billion stars. Now ask yourself again, are we alone? Most certainly not, but the question you should be asking yourself is; will we ever find or meet another intelligent lifeform? Probably not. The distances are just too great. Even if we could travel by the speed of light, we still wouldn't get that far.

Haven't you ever seen Event Horizon? We'll just bend space time using wormholes... and accidentally go to hell =p
Stargate. Eve-Online. These two have given me a bit of hope!
Ok, so Stargate is a bit out there and Eve is an MMORPG (read: more · peg)... but hey, there are QUADRILLIONS (maybe more?) of planets out there. To think we are the only life form is ludicrous. Even to think we are the only sentient being is ludicrous. Even to think that God created only us... is ludicrous! (assuming you believe in a higher being). We are an experiment as far as the biblical theology is concerned and we are a product of extreme circumstances according to the Big Bang theory.
Yes there are other life forms out there. I can almost guarantee that. How could there not be, at the very least, single celled organisms elsewhere?!

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise.
Its five-year mission, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to enslave and exploit the dumber ones, and to run like hell from the smarter ones.
To boldly split infinitives, where infinitives have never been boldly split before.

How did you come to that conclusion? Did you take a statistical significant sample of all viable planets in the universe that can support life? If so, NASA would really love to see it. You know, to stop all the billions in research in planet searching telescopes and such.

Tribbles:
Hey guy and girls,
i'm looking for an awesome story / ideas for an awesome story for my own rpg
but i'm not that good in writing an epic story
so maybe there's someone here in this community, that likes writing stories?
i'd like to collect ideas and such things, to provide an epic plot for my rpg
if you're interessted, just have a look:
Project Eldena
maybe we could collect some stuff here?
those are my plot guidelines:
medieval virtual reality
cut off from the outside / reality
the main enemy is an enormously huge demon like fox

"This isn't the RPG you're looking for!" :silly:
My favorite RPG was a story set in space. We were pirates. Kinda had the same reality as cowboy bebop.

so there's no one with good ideas?
I got a great idea.
How about... this spikey haired young man with a giant sword goes and fights against bad guys?

lol, I didn't think about that. I was referencing Final Fantasy 7. But now that you mention it, that serves to remind me of how unoriginal Bleach is.

Try really hard to copy both of them and maybe something really good will happen. Maybe.

yeah, this could become amazing. but i'm still not sure how much of such storys are 'compatible' with a medieval setting
but i'll try my best! :highfive:
Trapped in a virtual medieval world, wasn't that a Warehouse 13 episode?
I'll give it some thought, no promises though, I'm already writing my own stories and have 2 indigames on list (for ex-clan friends in game design uni courses). May not have the time

it's even the main idea of Sword Art Online and .hack but it's a freaking genius idea.
PS: it's ok, i just want to collect pieces, so even keyword would be enough there's no need to think of a whole story, that should be my part
edit: and... thanks in advance
Small fire in the village.
"Sorry I don't have time for that, oh lord Jesus there a fire. Smell like something's BBQing.'
Hope that helps.
