Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the future of space exploration. The new Halo trailer had me thinking about how many visions of mankind's expansion into the stars leading to awakening or discovering things that aren't good for our health. Aliens, Predators--though of course they come to earth on their own anyway--Necros from Dead Space, and many more.
On the other hand, even with some of that bad that comes in Prometheus it is one film that I can say was so stunning that it made me want to hop a ship and sail the stars. Star Trek, Babylon 5, and Star Wars also offer a blend of the good with the bad when it comes to what might await us.
The odds of us being the only life of note in the entire universe is unlikely, so what shall our travels bring us? Will we find peace and prosperity, unending conflict between our own selves and with other beings, or some blend of both? :silly:
We know next to nothing about it since we have only really gotten to explore/study our solar system. So all I can say is that whatever we find will be monumental.
Pretty sure we're the only form of life in all of existence.

You're pushing that a little. There might not be any intelligent/sentient life but there is very little chance there aren't even unicellular organisms somewhere out there. You're thinking like somebody who would insist that the Sun orbited the Earth.

How did you come to that conclusion? Did you take a statistical significant sample of all viable planets in the universe that can support life? If so, NASA would really love to see it. You know, to stop all the billions in research in planet searching telescopes and such.

I think there is life out there. Think about history, every species that has walked or even lived on this planet. Earth is a tiny spec in the universe. Its like looking at a grain of sand and saying "this is the only grain of sand on this planet."
Plus, how do you think we got here? Probably microbes living in ice on a meteor. Most of our water came as ice from space, and we have found microbial life living under extreme conditions (pressure, heat, cold)

That's pretty stupid. There are roughly 300 billion stars in our galaxy (milky way). Let's say that each star have 4 planets circling. That's a potensial of 1.2 trillion planets in OUR galaxy alone. NASA estimates that there are roughly a total of 125 billion galaxies in the universe (2002 numbers), and each of those galaxies have hundreds of billion stars. Now ask yourself again, are we alone? Most certainly not, but the question you should be asking yourself is; will we ever find or meet another intelligent lifeform? Probably not. The distances are just too great. Even if we could travel by the speed of light, we still wouldn't get that far.

Stargate. Eve-Online. These two have given me a bit of hope!
Ok, so Stargate is a bit out there and Eve is an MMORPG (read: more · peg)... but hey, there are QUADRILLIONS (maybe more?) of planets out there. To think we are the only life form is ludicrous. Even to think we are the only sentient being is ludicrous. Even to think that God created only us... is ludicrous! (assuming you believe in a higher being). We are an experiment as far as the biblical theology is concerned and we are a product of extreme circumstances according to the Big Bang theory.
Yes there are other life forms out there. I can almost guarantee that. How could there not be, at the very least, single celled organisms elsewhere?!

I used to have one of those little plastic cig making machines, the tobacco goes in the top, and you put an empty cigarette 'tube' with the filter already on it onto the end, and then slide the top of the thing back and forth once, and it puts the tobacco into the tube.
Took like an hour and a half to make a carton's worth of smokes, but at less than half the price of factory made cigs.

As a non-smoker, my question (from what I understand) is: given that loose tobacco is now being taxed fairly significantly here in the U.S., is there really any financial point in rolling your own vs. just buying a pack or a carton?
Now, I totally get that you can pick your own tobacco and have a much wider variety to select from, and you can get custom-made stuff with flavors and finishings and all that, so there's no doubt in my mind you can make a better cigarette than you can buy.
OTOH, why make cigarettes instead of cigars?
Again, I put these points out as a non-smoker. I'm not judgmental; I'm simply curious.

Not sure how bad it is in the us, but up here in Canada a pouch costs $15, now compair that to a pack of filtered, good quality smokes at $12, that lasts you three days. The pouch lasts me almost a week. Also I think there is less chemicals in loose tobacco, and it tastes better. Plus there is a slight bit of satisfaction from rolling your own smoke

Also, this passage from the Bible:
The Way of Love
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned,a but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love."

It's a functional device out of the box. The general population doesn't have the time to root and customize their device and flash ROMs. They don't care about "making it their own". They just want a fast and functional device without any tweaking.
It's a walled garden...sure...but most people don't care.
It sells 2 million in a weekend for many reasons. First. and foremost it has a large fan population, hence a population who are dedicated to the iOS. Two. the delaying of announcement has increased the fan base's anxiety and desire for the iPhone hence sudden burst in demand.
And why do Android users hate iPhone users? From the same reason you think iOS is the best. The same mindless people in both groups. It is the most narrow minded and uninformative statement which shows your level of knowledge and understanding of software or comparing things at hand.
No software is the best, best is dependent on the situation at hand. Yes they may have an advantage over another in certain areas, but it ends there, still a stalemate. You think i should get a cashier or a barcode scanner system for a lemonade stand because it offers the best management system on stock? No im wastingmoney on something I'm only doing today, get the point? f not I'll elaborate even more with my post below. Btw english does not seem to be your first language so I apologize if you cannot understand it.
Oki so now lets put iOS in the hands of someone who knows his way around UIs. Think he's gonna enjoy the simplicity iOS over the functionality of Android? Why not ask the forum if you can't think of the answer.
Now do you think a beginner computer user would prefer android? Judging from your perspective you'd say no, and I completely agree with you. A beginner would not even think of pressing a arrow pointing up or a three row and column square as the app drawer. All from my experience with my friends.
Get the point now?

Just because you're fanboys doesn't justify blindness... Unless you're blind fanboys and in that case why do you have a touch screen phone?
jokes aside, iPhone doesn't sell strictly by brand. It is a device who's hardware (not internals but aesthetics) are unrivaled aside from a tiny screen. The build quality is superb and doesn't feel like it was haphazardly glued together like HTC devices or like Mattel built them like Samsung devices. The only hardware company that rivaled iphone's build quality is Nokia and they're onboard with WP7. Next, the OS is infinitely more fluid than android. On average an android device on the UI runs around 22-27 fps where iOS is a steady 60 as far back as the 3gs. It's optimized for it's superb hardware and it shows. Next, fragmentation isn't an issue. I can play infinity blade on a 3gs just as well as a 4gs and 2 years in the real world is like a century in the tech world. Overall it is a higher quality product for gaming, media, and basic phone functions. If you only get your phones to mod then android is for you but for quality, WP7 or iOS.

who cares why they sold more. Who cares why they are considered best. Lets allow windows and and android to exist. I have my reasons for preferring android. but lets consider for a moment how many jobs These devices create. Lets also consider the choices the devices provide.
If the iphone and Ios are the best why doesnt every other maker give up. We really only need one phone right. Cases will make them look different and Apple can decide when we upgrade. Sounds like a great idea to me.
Are all iPhone users kind of uppity? My neighbors just upgraded and think their crap smells sweeter than most.

Yeah man, I was poisoned with good genes. I hardly look 36, but not in a Ralph Macchio kind of way. I just really don't look my age. Clerks that see my ID constantly comment on it.
So I guess, keeping with the topic of the thread, I collect years. Years I apparently haven't lived yet.
Do you believe that extraterrestrials exist?
Have you seen UFO sightings?
Describe it if you want.
Personally i've seen alot wierd flying objects flying in the sky very fast.

Could have been a bird or a jet plane.

All I'm saying is, if you think we're alone in this universe, you couldn't be any more wrong. The proof is everywhere.
I've seen things. And just recently, Jasper county sheriff's department caught a UFO on camera. 2 days before they announced it in the local paper, I captured 3 unknown objects in the sky with my videocamera. SAME EXACT THING. Very unusual flight patterns, huge glimmering lights wrapping around the craft. They were the fastest objects I've ever seen. And I truly believe its real.
And weeks before I caught what the Jasper police caught, I saw a military jet hightailing it after a glowing bluish orange mass, and out of nowhere, the object dashed side to side, almost as if it was toying with the jet, then it darted off quicker than my eyes could follow.
I'm a true believer guys, and I am not ashamed to admit it.

I doubt anyone has seen a real UFO with "aliens" in it. I mean, what ever you think you see is hundreds of feet above you. You could easily be mistaken. Maybe if anyone got a picture with a camera good enough to zoom in and examine the UFO, but that's never going to happen. I'll tell you what though, I once saw a bus like plane in the sky, and it didn't make a sound, which was strange as it was pretty low.

I don't why, but these alien folk seem to prefer the US to fly over only. Personally, I have never seen a UFO.

Exactly. Only Americans see them. Nobody else sees anything but planes.

I've seen lots of things, flying, and thought "I don't know what that is". I don't believe in aliens though. That's about as likely as me being born on a giant rock that's hurtling in an elliptical orbit around a slowly dying ball of fire in an almost infinite vacuum.
Ridiculous.

Wait, you mean we aren't on a rock orbiting around a slowly dying ball of fire?

Pffft... that's about as likely as a nearly infinite universe, heavily populated with planets and moons and stars being created from an almost infinitely tiny singularity, within a split second.

Yup, but I don't believe that aliens don't exist. I don't believe they've visited earth.

Oh. I don't think aliens exist at all. We have no proof, and just because the space is really vast doesn't mean there has to be other life elsewhere.

I believe that in the vastness of space, some form of life, whether intelligent or not, is bound to exist.
I don't believe that they have visited earth though. Why visit our planet for decades and not make contact?

i will never forget my experience of such sightings when i was in 5th grade,
it was like 100m from our class window,
only 2 of us saw it,
and no one really believed us,
i was like a sauser dish with an antenna going up and down,
then it went to like hyperdrive and flew away
i'm not trolling this time,
****s real
