It will be interesting to see if this will turn out to be just a conspiracy or this will prove to cause major system damage.

Dates ending 31+ are treated as 19xx
Open excel and type in 05/05/34 and you'll get 05/05/1934

if you think about it.... your are unlikely to keep the phone for more than 4 years
google keeps releasing software updates every few weeks
and some of us might not even be alive by 2030
I can't honestly see this as a viable concern, but it's pretty interesting nonetheless. If I have this phone in 2038 though, something must have seriously went wrong.

Major issue. Easy to rectify, but if not addressed, all our electronics will not recognize years after 2038...
Just like y2k, could be a major issue, but it won't be because people recognize it and will fix/patch it. 64bit computers already mitigate this, but phones, watches, etc. all would need to be 64bit as well...
Major problem is that most devices have one 32-bit register to hold time. Ether need to ADD another register to get two 32-bit registers to hold time, or increase the single register from 32 to 64 bits.
or...?
On my ST15i the calendar it's up to 2100. But if i try to set an event using that year, the date goes back automaticaly to 1970...
Non issue; once the world ends in 2012 there will be no need for smartphones.
In all seriousness though, I'm sure we'll have another Y2K scare and they'll manage to fix it rendering all the people who stock up on water by the jug and jars of pickled eggs feeling empty.
Until next time..!

Just seen an app on the market called Swimmer's Log. That seems to be two things that wouldn't mix, swimming and owning a phone with a moisture damage indicator. I don't know how many of the Android phones currently in use have this but I do know mine does. I think insurance covers it but im not sure.

Nice device but the drop down menu is nasty and the stock keyboard leaves something to be desired The stock launcher is also driving me nuts (no landscape). Rooting the thing was also a nightmare but I suspect 2 of my 3 my PCs were the culprit. I finally rooted and tested the N7 against my Tf101 Transformer and a little disappointed that FF7 plays identical on the new Tegra3. Perhaps FPse isn't taking advantage of the new cores. Meh.
I bought the tablet last night on a whim. I walked into staples and they had a bunch. Overall the build quality is great. Feels like a stout little tablet. I'm just not sold on the Phablet mode. I already have a GalaxyNexus and it kinda just feels like a large version of that.
I definitely am going to try tablet mode and a new keyboard (thumb keyboard was my choice on the 10"). I also recommend just unlocking ASAP just so you don't lose everything if you decide to root in the future.
Overall the device is a good buy for the $$ but just a heads up for new owners with prior tablet experience that it feels a little off from other tablets IMO. This doesn't have to be a bad thing.
I was pretty impressed with the battery even for through the night. I picked it up at 5pm and was pretty much constantly on it testing and rooting and testing until 3am. I gave it a good charge over night so well see how today goes.
Now if the awesome devs here can somehow get HDMI out working, I'd be set.

WOW, rooting was hard?
If that was really the case, you really shouldn't bother. Some people shouldn't have root.
Sent from my Nexus 7
Easy, guys. OP said his PCs were the reasons for the rooting nightmare. Probably ADB drivers or something.
And OP is just telling the community a few observations. I hardly think this is a complaint thread.
Drivers exactly... plus Windows 8. And for the record rooting has never been the problem... just driver issues. Plus if you look at my signature, you'd tell I've been around.
Anyway that said, the thread was just posting my initial thoughts and woes for new owners. Windows 8 is the future and its driver protection crap is horrible. If you guys actually found the steps for installing the drivers on windows 8, you'd know it wasn't an easy process. You basically have to reboot the Pc in a special mode that disables this security feature and really hack around with it. The Galaxy Nexus drivers went in without s hitch so it boils down to infancy drivers that aren't signed properly.
It IS an issue, just not for you guys apparently.
Overall once the drivers were locked in, yea ADB commands are cake... or use the 1 click app that's available.
Anyway, after replacing the stock keyboard to my fav Thumbs Keyboard and some heavy gaming, I got over 9 hours with almost 6 screen on time. The 7" form factor fits in my cargo pocket of my shorts and very easy to tote. Very nice tablet.
Missing HDMI out. And the screens whites have a red tint compared to my Transformer. Both, hopefully can be resolved by some custom kernels.
Thanks for the unneeded ball busting comments

I currently own a Nook Tablet, Asus Transformer, Samsung Galaxy 7, Galaxy Nexus, and a Nexus 7. I think I am more then experienced in Android devices to make educated comparisons between units. My first three days with the device I didn't think it was a big deal, what's the fuss all about. But I haven't put it down since. I just love to pick it up and use it.
At first I thought it was just basically a big Galaxy Nexus (it really is) but that extra screen space sure is nice. Anyway dude, give it some time and if your anything like me you will get a lot of use out of it.
Really?! It's like everyone's getting upset because you basically said the N7 isn't 100% perfect. I just ordered a Nexus 7 a few hours ago, so I appreciate the post. I'll be the first to NOT bust your balls ( leave that to the old lady right? )
I'm glad you mentioned the sorta phone UI...every time I look at the home screen I cringe, and I was wondering what was up with it. I didn't really plan on running the stock launcher much, but I had no idea it was portrait only ( wtf? ) now I KNOW I'll never use it. Thanks for thoughts.

Hello
As you know the release of Samsung Galaxy S4 GE and HTC One GE offering the same flavour as Nexus users already have a taste for.
Do you think inclusion of the new type of camera app and various other features in these junks defeats the purpose of owning a Nexus? It is we who should get the update of even a minute bug squash or changes to any core app.
What would be the update cycle of these junk phones? Will the Android updates be prioritised for the Nexus or will it released for the junks together?
Sorry for being rude, as a loyal Nexus fan, I seriously hate these so called idiotic Google Edition.

I sound like a broken record saying this since day 1. The OEMs have to put their proprietary drivers and kernels (firmware) into the image or the software wont' know how to communicate with the hardware. I guess if the OEMs were willing to release them to Google then I guess Google could handle the updates. Then you have to ask: why would Google take on that responsibility? Would the OEMs openly give Google those drivers in a day and age where anyone can sue anyone over anything because something looks similar to something else? None of that makes sense.
Yeah I'm kinda dissapointed... I want the latest and greatest on my N4 but still don't have it... Hopefully it's just a matter of days... Hopefully hours....

I don't understand what you are saying. What other "features" are you talking about? A red phase beam wallpaper? These phones haven't been released yet. My guess is the N4 will get those changes when 4.3 is released which may come before the GE phones are even released. Most likely lots of backend changes to the camera were needed to get it to work with the new driver hardware in the GE phones.
Once they launch will be the last time they have something the Nexus doesn't. The moment Google said that HTC/Samsung were responsible for updates and they weren't hosting/posting source means those phones will almost certainly be behind the Nexus.

That's the point, why are GEs getting the new camera app with new arc like settings and Nexus are left behind. Why is that "we" should wait for 4.3 and expect that the new camera would be included in that. It is a clear blow to the loyal Nexus owners who actually gets all updates to the Android first, even a small bug squash.
And talking about other features, I'm sure there would be some still hidden not available to the Nexus owners.

look a little out of the box, these Google Edition phones are promoting stock android, whether they'll get updates parallel with the nexus or will join after a few days/weeks delay it doesn't matter. We all want more stock android options, and that's a step in the right direction, popularizing stock bloat-free android.
So, yeah, grow up and stop acting like samsung galaxy/iphone/etc.. blinded fanboys.

Well, after doing some simple att chat support and using my caps lock, I learned that att can offer any note 3 user any phone as a replacement(excludes iphone since only apple does iphone support, and includes the gs5 if we still don't get a gps fix by the time it's released.) As much as I love my note 3 the lack of gps functionality is really annoying, especially since I got my license a few weeks ago. That's such a terrible outlook to have. It's like "I am okay with MNCs not being accountable for their actions and their inability to do stuff within a timely manner. People are just being spoiled, it's not like they spent good $ on a device." Not everyone roots devices. Voiding warranties is not cool for everyone. So pipe down.
Well then why are people here on this site?
This is a development site. Not a ***** and moan site, not a social network, not a support site.
99% of the people on this site have a rooted device, so that logic is out the window.
If you don't have a rooted device, oh well. I don't care and you have no place here especially if you are going to complain about stuff.
I say this again, there are fixes in the form of mods and custom ROMs. If you don't want them, that is fine. However, if you really don't want the fixes we have provided for FREE, then go away and quit complaining to us. We don't care.
AT&T will fix and release stuff when they are ready. You do not pay them for what is on the device. You pay them for cellular service and data. You don't pay for GPS, so acting like you are entitled to it being fixed by them is completely null and void especially since the GPS software and hardware isn't even developed by them.

Going to have to disagree with you here. Hey you don't pay for the screen on your phone but you do expect it to turn on don't you. The gps is no different than any other function of the phone. It is listed under the detailed specs of both at&t and Samsung's website and should be expected to work out of the box with out tweaking anything. At&t modified the software running on the phone and broke the gps while doing it.

I'll agree with that on a few points. But all they can and really have to do at this point is replace the unit with a refurb. Patience is needed. *****ing about things on this site will do nothing to make AT&T fix it and it pisses people off.
They will fix it when and if they fix it.
I see a ton of users on XDA that expect things. That's not how it works here and is one of the reasons a lot of very reputable devs have jumped ship.
Entitlement has hurt our community.

I think what you're missing is that the OP is not complaining here, but providing a potential solution (assuming it is accurate). Truthfully, your posts look more like whining than the OP's. Your comment regarding "entitlement" is off base. Is it not reasonable to expect the device to work? The purpose of development here is not (primarily anyway) to fix broken features, but to improve or add features. Another purpose of this forum is information (both to give and receive).
That being said, I appreciate your frustration.

If you don't have a rooted device, oh well. I don't care and you have no place here especially if you are going to complain about stuff.

I bet this statistic is far from true with newer devices. I'm sure the purveyors of the site would be happy to run all of us and their ad revenue off because we don't feel the need to root our devices anymore. This isn't WinMo 5, this isn't even Android 2.x, most recent Android devices can be pretty decent with no specific modifications to the software environment.

AT&T will fix and release stuff when they are ready. You do not pay them for what is on the device. You pay them for cellular service and data. You don't pay for GPS, so acting like you are entitled to it being fixed by them is completely null and void especially since the GPS software and hardware isn't even developed by them.

The GPS libraries HAVE been modified by AT&T. That's pretty apparent since all the other branded and unbranded models work. What isn't necessarily apparent is if AT&T knows exactly how they broke it. I for instance did pay for the device to be fully functional as advertised. GPS functionality is listed on the box and I would consider it to be part of my $750 purchase.
I appreciate you're a BA mobile developer or tinkerer, but the only person here with a sense of entitlement is you. If you're attempting to usher in a new era of "if you aren't a developer, scram!" on XDA you aren't the first and won't be the last but I can assure you none of those who act that way do it successfully.
Lol at buying a device and expecting the gps to work is "entitlement" attitude.....

I use Scout navagation, gps is perfectly fine on att note3.

Hey they can keep kitkat I will take a M8 till the 1+ comes out. No more Samsung products for me!
Now watch KK will start rolling out before they make it to the stores.
Trying to exchange my phone. Apparently the first rep. that I had was really nice. Right now they are saying that they can move me to an early upgrade for another line as compensation.
Hello everybody!
Yes its been like for ever since i broke my HTC First and moved on and since then ive had an Atrix HD and now have a Red Nexus 5. Running lollipop.
But still i look back to this phone and still think this is probably the best phone ive owned. All day battery, great size and build quality, stock android. Yes development was always a minus, but still.
How is everyone doing?
PS: thinking of getting my sister an HTC First, its a pretty solid device hardware wise and she doesnt care much about software, she is using an old ipod touch and an ipad, shes tired of ios
Good to see someone else converting to the Android master race > lol. I agree with the fact that the battery generally lasted all day, but the lack of speed is what caused me to want to get something better. But yeah it was a good device when I came from a MyTouch 3G and then 3 Windows Phones.
Off topic here, are you seeing any drop in battery life on the official Lollipop update on your N5 compared to an AOSP version from a few days ago?

Haha I've converted to android since 2011 and my sister never likes apple anyways.
Miss this community so much, looks like everyone has left like Abraham and loir.
Um at first battery life was more like battery death but after a reboot and full charge I did manage to get my minimum of 4 hours screen on time. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get 5 hours.
I was thinking moto g, vs the HTC first, but I haven't found anything in it that is better than in the First. Especially for my sis who has really small hands surprisingly (she's 5 years younger but as big as me and I'm 19...)
still using my First and still hoping to get at least KitKat so that i can pair with android wear...
but looks like no luck and i have to change my phone soon.
:crying:
but seriously between first and Moto G, i'll get the moto G
at least you get official Lollipop support. 5 hrs SOT.
The 1st gen Moto G size is not that much bigger than the 1st

Yes you get software support..but this isn't for me. Its for my sister and plus I'd like to get back into hacking and stuff cause with a nexus you don't really want to tinker much

Yeah Lloir is no longer here since he bricked his First so he just upgraded to something else. Jmz is no longer here, and I'm not sure if sun_dream is here either. I know someone was working on a CM11 port but he told me that he needed to learn more before it was going to work well enough for daily use.

I just hate to see such a good device "go to waste".
I also wish i could port cm11, atleast learn some how, but my only computer is my desktop at home, and internet at 700kbps is not enough to do anything except browse the web. But if internet wasnt a problem id definitely try even though i have no idea how.
CM puts so much effort into mainstream devices that will get updates anyways and never focus on forgotten devices.

Yeah and it's sad because it didn't use to be like that. It's gonna be even worse when CM12 is released because they said that if a device 1) is not owned by maintainers or 2) can't cooperate with the new security measures then they won't support it at all.

Yeah probably. The best part is though that the GS3 Mini and Motorola Defy have both gotten 5.0 ports.

I'm gonna try to contact carbon ROM and see if they could take up development here. Better than nothing.

Its like a more stable version of CM with more features brought over from other Roms but its not as crazy as paranoid android or aokp
I dont want to upgrade also, I know i'll miss the design of the First if I sell it
I agree, First is a great phone, stylish, great design and ergonomics, i will keep this phone no matter what. My daily driver is Moto X, 2013 model. I like to use my phone in one hand, never liked anything over 4.7-in screen size, have had Samsung S3, original Note, Note 2 and Note 3, traded them all, although i really liked S3 the most, couldn't live with the Notes. Htc First has become my backup phone. Previously, i used a Palm Pre Plus as my backup, but i finally traded it in.

Not that I know of. It's strange considering getting drivers for this chip set should be a piece of cake...
