Official-Unofficial XT860 Dedicated Thread - Motorola Droid 3

Honestly, I'm not sure what all the *****in' for an XT860 forum is all about. Do we really need a lot of space to discuss all the dev that doesn't work on our phones? I'm sure one thread is enough. That way, maybe all the d3 users can get some peace from us constantly asking about compatibility.
Maybe, as a public service, all the d3 devs could stop in here after they've produced the next great ROM, and just let us know (without laughing) that NO, this will NOT work with your phone.
Ah...I feel better now.

Oh well. The thing is that Bell should just come with an update so devs can start. Wonder if Bell is waiting for ICS to update instead of updating now and then having to update again for ICS???
But yeah where is the freaking update. Maybe some Canadian people know more about it ????

...it just gets frustrating. The D3, if you include the leaked 5.7.894, is now two updates ahead of us...and we're stuck on what...er...windows 3.1?
There's also a level of frustration with myself. After all, with alternate launchers, UOT kitchen, root, debloating, its not like its a bad phone..I guess I just have the patience level of the average 3 year old.
Just to be clear, once we get an update then someone can get an sbf from that? Or am I totally out to lunch...remember, I'm the guy who has a flashing clock on his vcr. VCR....video cassette recorder? Never mind kiddies.

It still has some major glitches in my opinion that Motorola should have already fixed for us. I asked bell and was told the updates come from the manufacturer. I'm still waiting to hear back from Motorola, despite the 24 hour for a response auto reply I got. While ROMs would be nice, the cell standby, slow camera and buggy keyboard are all issues that Motorola should have addressed already imho

Well I once e-mailed motorola canada with questions about the XT860 - haven't heard from them since (it's been weeks). So don't get your hopes up

I completely agree with you Endroid. I am also curious about one other thing... Lets say I wanted my phone in french, how would I be able to convert it over, or vice versa? Maybe we could get an SBF out of it???

Weird bug I just noticed... I did that and changed to French, back to English, then to Spanish, then to English and I noticed that my message icon for my Exchange account changed colours...

Yeah my gf has the XT860 and she's not very happy with it. Part of that is because it's more complicated than her 3GS, but part of that is also because there are a number of bugs and it's laggy at times. Tons of bloatware.
At least if we had some way of loading our own ROMs I could fix some of that for her.
I know that my stock AT&T Captivate was a piece of crap. It wasn't until I installed Cyanogen Mod that I had something useful.

I truly apologize for the inconvenience that you are experiencing at this time. What issues are you experiencing with the unit? Unfortunately, there is not an update scheduled to be released at this time and we do not have any information as to when one will become available. You can check our site for future updates. I truly understand your frustration and I apologize again for the inconvenience. If you need further assistance please contact Customer Care at the following number (800) 461-4575. Thank you for your continued patience.

Sincerely, Latasha Customer By Web Form (Marc Laferriere) 11/06/2011 07:40 PM I am the owner of a XT860 4G, which i am beginning to regret. The phone has numerous issues and bugs, which i'm sure Motorola is aware of, as pretty much all of these issues were fixed in the recent update to the XT862 (5.6.890). I have previously contacted Morotola about this and was told that there currently is no update and there is no information pertaining to one. Now i see that there is yet another update coming for the XT862(an unofficial leak, however that means that one will be released soon) yet still nothing for the XT860. The lack of support for this device is offensive to me. When i purchase a device i expect that it will be supported for at least a few years. As it stands i would not purchase nor recommend Motorola products. So again i ask, is an update for the XT860 forthcoming, or should i be looking for a device that will actually see some support.
Thanking you in advance Marc

Hell I don't even get that. Granted I could make some changes to improve my battery life such as turning off background data but then what's the point of having a smartphone. 6-10 depending on my usage

Great post, Endoroid. As doom and gloom as the lettter appears, its still possible that the letter is simply holding to company policy of not releasing info until its ready to be released. That's what I'm gonna tell myself anyway.
Its been said before somewhere, but I'll re-iterate, never ever buy a country specific phone like this...unless you are happy with the stock experience.
I'm very happy I didn't actually pay for this baby, having won it in one of Mobile Syrups giveaways.

I'm out of country the next week but when I return I plan on also contacting bell and escalating with Motorola. I have been into a bell store but the sales reps are pretty useless for this.
I mean honestly, given the similarities between the 2 phones I don't understand why we wouldn't receive updates around the same time as d3. It should be easy enough for Motorola to modify the update to apply to our device
Grrrr

Yeah yeah, Rub it in lol.
Well sad news for the Bell users for sure.

Huh, we don't even recovery to get back to stock if things go wrong.
I heard Motorola issues updates based on phone popularity/user base. If this is true, it will be awhile before we see any updates. XT860 has the same bugs, if not even more like D3 with original release firmware. D3 is now getting second OTA while we have not even heard about first one to address these obvious bugs. If we look back at Milestone 2, to compare to Droid 2 Global which took 8 months to get GB upgrade, M2 has not yet received it.
Things don't look good with XT860 in this aspect for sure.
Lets hope Motorola will prove me wrong!

[Q] Diffrence between us and canada market?

Sorry if this has been asked and talked about before but haven't been able to find anything. I have contacted both att and samsung on the upgrade/update for the att us Captivate. I have contacted att twice and samsung 1 time. It seems that both times att responded they had to contact samsung. So i'm beging to think the us update is all samsung. I'm sure this is old news but now to my question. And maybe someone can answer it. How big of a diffrence is there between the US and Canada phones? What i'm not understanding is how one has the update and the other doesn't if there isn't any diffrence. My thought is maybe with alot of problems that i have heard about with Rogers upgrade that samsung is trying to weed out problems before releasing to us. This last email i got back from ATT sounds like they don't have a clue on whats going on. but the one from Samsung was sure of the update just couldn't give a time frame. Thanks for reading and again am sorry if this has been talked about before, also hope i'm posting it in the right place.
I live in canada, updated to froyo didnt experience any problems aside from the browser memory leak issue... but thats it
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Samsungs roll in the update is pretty much over they did their part and sent working code to at&t.from my understanding at&t is simple playing the blame game.
I am not surprised that they seem to know nothing.its a big company with a large number of devices they can't know all the details about all of them. We well know when we know.I don't expect it for another month or so. not like we need it anyway with all of the great roms out there
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Each has its own carrier specific customization to do. For example, with Rogers 2.2, wi-fi tether is linked to a Rogers specific apk so that it can check your Rogers account (to make sure you paid for tethering) before it let you do it.
Since AT&T won't have official Android Mobile HotSpot tethering out until Feb 13, it makes sense that Captivate won't see 2.2 update until after that (so that it can contain AT&T specific tethering check app).
So, it is not as simply as who to blame. Each carrier has different demands and feature request. Samsung has to implement those demanded features then release to carrier for testing.
Thanks...
Answered a few things i had questions on. I know theres a bunch of roms out and good things can happen but i'm also aware of the bad things with modin the phone with custom roms. I did my motorola backflip with sorta no problems but when i did run into problems it was easy enuf to reflash it sounds like theres alot more to flashing a rom to it then just rooting and flashing. So think i will wait a bit longer. If it comes down to things will try my hand at the roms.

How awesome would this be on our milestones!

WOW! What if this was possible on our milestones. Sorry to be hasty, but is this possible on our stones?

Personally, I think all the roms are good only for making motorola look bad. We have gingerbreag before they've even managed to bring out froyo. It's a joke, and personally, my respect for motorola is gone. I will continue happily installing custom roms onto my milestone, and motorola can go stall for another year.

Motorola is very slow on updates. I disappoint...
that's so true moto is very slow on update
looks great but i think the missing kernel (which we cant update that easily due to locked bootloader on milestone) would prevent us from using honeycomb.
we COULD use something with a froyo-kernel that LOOKS(!) like honeycomb and has most of its features, maybe.
but -just like "Gingerbread"/2.3- we will probably NEVER get the REAL thing... only something that looks and behaves almost the same as the original (like Gingerbread).
yeah, just in case some people didnĀ“t know that - what we have is NOT real Gingerbread.
That would be sick!!

This phone will get CM7 no matter who you vote for. If I were you guys, I would vote for a non CM7 person (like Nitro or Liquid) so we can get some variety.
Just my 2 cents...

Ok, I see lots of "cm7 ftw" type comments. I thought my post in the other thread would be enough, but maybe it should be said again.
AOSP/MIUI will not come to this phone anytime in the foreseeable future. Let me break it down like this.
Remember on the Evo back before shinzul and toast got wimax working? We are kinda in the same position again. Here we are, faced with devices that contain a totally new form of data. One that isn't available in the aosp repos. One that we have no reference code for. One that the code is different for on each lte device.
Your first question is probably, "Well they did it on the Thunderbolt, why not the Bionic?" Fair question, and seeing as we got aosp and lte on that device witgout the help of cm, I think I'm in a position to answer it. The thunderbolt runs a qualcomm chip, unlike the charge and the bionic. Qulacomm has this nifty little site called Code Aurora Forums. CAF is where all the lte code came from. Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but neither slayher nor xoomdev wrote 99% of the lte code. The difficult part with the bolt was making it all work with our existing rom code.
This code WILL NOT work on non qualcomm devices, I would hope that goes without saying.
So where's that leave us you ask? SOL. Or **** out of luck for those of you who don't know l33t sp3ak.
Remember my comment about wimax and team w1n? Those guys literally wrote the wimax code FROM SCRATCH. And it took FOREVER. The evo just got wimax on aosp months ago, and how long was the device out for?
What's this all actually mean you ask? It means don't expect with one of these guys to bring miui or cm7 or anything non blur based to this device. Not that I think either of these guys arent amazing devs, they both are. No disrespect to either one, but I think even they would agree that they aren't up to the challange of writing lte literally from nothing.
Also, one more thing on the wimax-evo/lte-bionic comparison. Yea, before the evo got wimax, it still had 3g and was a perfectly functional Rom. In this case its going to be a little different.
DISCLAIMER
The follow statements are the only thing in this post I ccannot 100% back up. I'm 99% of their correctness, but could be wrong.
With my experience with lte, its all or nothing. You don't get working 3g and no 4g. You get it all or you get basically an ipodtouch. Nothing but wifi.
Now, someone did mention that the bionic has seperate radios, unlike the bolt. They used this as an argument that 3g can be fixed before 4g is made to work. My argument against that is to look at the current cm7 build for the bionic. No data. No 3g. Data is RARELY an obstacle for aosp on devices. Usually only when something weird is going on, like what Samsung does, or where lte is involved.
Again, I could be wrong. But I doubt it.
Tldr : Quit expecting aosp on this device. And if you ***** out whoever wins for not getting aosp booted, I will personally print out this post, find you and shove it down your throat.

The only reason it hurts so much is because it's likely 100% true :'(
Why would I want anyone wasting their time on CM7 for Bionic? I know that it's fun to get hold of lots of new ROMs and spend all your free time every evening trying new ones, but it's going to take a while and in the meantime, there's this Ice Cream Sandwich thing (anybody else heard of it) that's coming out.
Love the CM offerings; CM7 was fun on my Eris... but would be as enticing as Eclair with modded Sense on my Bionic! Anybody have a good reason to pursue this further aside from new toys???
The more the merrier?

Well, we won't necessarily have it in a few days. It will take a lot of work to port it to our devices because of hardware differences, and we would need someone very good at coding these types of things.

it wont be as hard as it seems, we have the same internals as the razr minus the 1gb ram. i dont know if the kexec is the same (it should be for the omap 4430) but the only coding that would be different is getting the kexec to take the modded kernel. once its released for the razr within the week im sure hash is gonna have some fun with this.

There was some discussion of this over at the Razr forum in that thread. The differences between the GSM and CDMA versions of the Razr are alone enough to cause major pains in porting it between the two devices, and it was originally developed for the GSM version.
i would think that since its a nice sized topic in our razr forums its gonna work for CDMA too. the dev of the work around won a developer contest and recieved a CDMA razr along with kejar.
Yay gsm!

Pardon my ignorance on the topic, but this allows us to use another kernel on top of the stock one, but not replace it right? Is the only downside a longer boot time? Also will this be relatively easy to port due to similar hardware or will that another challenge in itself.

so far the longer boot time is the only downside but its not a bad thing considering we reboot only to flash roms or refresh the phone a couple times a week and since it will let us have a fully working rom. this lets the phone boot with the gingerbread kernel behind the bootloader, then after the M splash screen it will boot into the ICS or modified GB kernel that is loaded.
we would have to have hashcode or anyone that has any kind of knowledge of how this really works tell us the time frame. as it stands we dont know anything other than it works on GSM razrs, and the dev has a CDMA razr he is porting it to and its days from release. we need to see the details on how to approach porting this to the D3/D4/bionic. it may not be that hard since its designed to do only 1 thing and hardware is mostly the same.
OP you are being way too optimistic in this thread. Chances of this being ported for D3 is very low as aboves has stated. It won't be anywhere as easy as changing the string "RAZR" to "Droid 3" in the kernels

It's taking quite a long time to be ported from the GSM Razr to the CDMA one, though. There aren't many hardware differences between those two devices, but for those differences it's taking a large amount of time. Now imagine how long it will take, and how complicated it will be to port, with all of the hardware differences between the Droid 3 and the Razr (and not to mention the different models of the D3; I assume a kexec module for the XT862 would not work on the XT860 or XT883 without changes). You are being a bit too optimistic here, especially with your thread title. It's less a bootloader bypass and more a "we're just gonna load our own kernel after the bootloader loaded the default one, but we still can't change anything about the boot process."
I hate to be the bearer of bad news and the one to shoot down everyone's hopes and dreams, but at the same time I don't want people to get too worked up over this and then get incredibly disappointed when it doesn't come or takes ungodly forever for it to come to use.
Well, you went to the other extreme and assumed it's impossible to port and that even if it could be done it would suck or something like that.
I'd like to take a more neutral stance on this and
a) be exited that this approach is being taken on locked devices.
b) be exited that a relatively similar device to the D3 is getting this kind of attention. because it could make things easier for D3 devs to port it to this device.
c) wait patiently, with no ETA expectations and offer to help with whatever I can to the devs.
I think it's much better than waiting for someone to crack moto's keys.
It's at least a chance.
Hope devs can ( and want to ) do something with this : )

New Droid 4 Owner -- Need some advice

Hey guys! My contract from verizon is running up and I desperately need a new phone; but I still have unlimited 4G and I'm not going to let Verizon contract me into another phone and lose it! HAH What a joke, 2gb a month for the "cheapest" option? No thank you. So I went ahead and ordered a mint condition Droid 4 for a nice price It should arrive this Friday
I'm upgrading from a Thunderbolt (the old girl served me well) and I cannot, and I can't stress this enough, cannot WAIT to have a physical keyboard back. I used to to be a Blackberry Curve and Tour owner back in the day before I made the switch to Android.
My question to you guys is, what ROM should I run? I want a full experience, so no non-working mechanics so I will be staying away from the broken camera roms, at least til they're stable. Also, what other things should I know before getting my new phone?
Thanks, and I hope to be part of the xda droid 4 owning family in a couple of days

If your looking for bug free myfishbear's Eclipse ROM is probably the way to go. As for other things to know, you will need to root and install safestrap recovery in order to install ROMs. I recommend the Droid 4 Utility ICS Only. That will allow you to root and also has a function to install safestrap.
And welcome to the D4 forums!

Thank you! I was seriously expecting responses like "buy a better phone" or something. Quick question; do I have to flash radios like I did with the Thunderbolt? If I get stock gingerbread OS, should I upgrade to stock ICS and then root? Or will it not make a difference?
Thanks!

I love my D4 You do not need to flash radios or anything like that. If it still has GB on it I would go ahead and update to ICS first and then root. That way you don't have to mess with root keeper or anything like that.
Thanks for the reply again! I will upgrade to ICS then root
It'll be here tomorrow, can't wait!
I suggest rooting stock and freezing a bunch of the garbage ICS apps that you will never use.
Fwiw, I've recently bought a used D4 for the same reason
(High 5!) And have not installed a new rom. I've just rooted, mainly so I could freeze a few things and use rom toolbox's ad blocker. Not to take anything away from the devs who do great work, but personally I'm totally happy with the (rooted) stock ICS. I know JB is supposed to be snappier, but I'm not seeing any sluggishness anyway. Welcome to the D4 world-the keyboard is AWESOME, really.

I'd prefer to install Eclipse rom because there is no bloat to freeze and it's really fast. Also, it gets rid of a few spy tools Moto and Verizon placed on the stock roms.
Moreover, when using safestrap (which is needed to flash a rom) you don't have to worry about screwing up your system because it prevents you from messing up the stock rom.
FedEx is terrible. My phone won't be here til tomorrow
Anyway.
I think I will try and use Eclpise first. It looks like what I am after
Another vote for Eclipse here
The JB ROMs, CM10, AOKP etc. are all very nice, but missing crucial features like camera flash and the HDMI port.
Does eclipse introduce any bugs? If it gives stock functionality without the stock bloat, I'll be changing my mind...

Not noticed any bugs.
I find the (optional, flashed separately) speed tweaks to really hurt battery life, but the basic ROM (plus olegfusion's GSM patch) works just fine.
Thanks! In that case I'll probably try it out when my semester ends and I have time to tinker.
I want to tag in here, I recently purchased this phone and im from the Netherlands. I read that the Droid4 will have stock JB (4.2) support. The thing is, I am dutch and the phone isn't unlocked. Now i've been trying to understand if the update is possible for me and if the update is out allready (cant find anything about it)
Little background info:
I've had the desire Z when it intially launched and it broke down last month. Been using the desire for a month and im going nuts! Really missing a physical HD and when I started googling it seemde that the droid4 is made for me, but not being sold in stores in the NL.
It depends... what are running right now? what are you looking for? performance or battery life??????????????
I have not seen any news that this phone will get 4.2, but Motorola currently has the device listed among those that will receive 4.1 at some point (no date scheduled, though). There has not yet been an official stock release of any form of Jellybean to the Droid 4 so far.
Sorry for the late reply, I got the phone now and I saw that Hashtag is one of the core dev's for 4.1/4.2 AOKP/CM10. The phone is unlocked when upgrading to ICS via WiFi, so thats not a worry. The problem is that I cant get the data to work, ive posted about it here
Fixed! Was blind and didnt see this post Ideal for GSM users

I've never had much luck with GSM/UMTS data on Hashcode's ROMs. Stick with something like Eclipse ICS for now until Hashcode's ROMs mature a bit.
if I were you, I'd also go for the eclipse rom.
I had installed the jb rom at first, but somewhen it got really slow and apps began to crash, I also lost connection with my carrier more often then with the eclipse rom that I've changed to now.

I just recently got a used Droid 4 myself, and I have to agree with ECLIPSE. It was the first rom I installed (immediately after I got the phone), and I rooted/safestrapped with the ICS Utility. It was an absolute breeze, and ECLIPSE is running wonderfully.
