I got my note 2 days ago and it is my first android so I'm a n00b
I am currently running 4.3.6 XXKKA ROM rooted with stock ROM
I want to flash this kernel but I am kind of lost
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362424
1. How to take backup of my current kernel before flashing?
I would prefer to backup using adb shell since it is much cleaner IMO
2. Will flashing a new kernel make me lose my stock rom ? (I guess the answer is no)
3. Will flashing a new kernel will disable OTA upgrades?
Thanks for the help
EDIT
I found this to backup/flash the Kernel and it works with the Note

Hello everyone,
I have some questions about my current setup for the Galaxy Note. First of all, I have the stock firmware installed with Android 2.3.6 (if I'm correct that that;'s the latest version). Together with the latest AbyssNote 3.5 as my kernel.
I have updated the kernel with the Mobile ODIN app, since I have a MacBook and no Windows installation... Anyways, my questions are this:
1) Will I be able to update to ICS as soon as it gets released by Samsung with the current custom kernel, or do I have to flash it back yo stock by then? And if so, how?
2) When updating to a custom rom, for example, RocketROM inside Mobile ODIN, will I lose all my data/apps and such? Or will it be as a upgrade so I don't have to reinstall anything?
3) When ICS would come out and I would have a custom rom + kernel, how do I proceed further? Do I need to wait for a custom ICS version to update to? Or do I have to revert everything to stock and such before I could update to the stock ICS?
$) And at last, when I would decide to flash my Note back to stock from a custom ROM/kernel, how do I do this without losing all my data/apps?
Thanks for your answers!
Regards,
berserkrico
I have a UK Galaxy Note and have a couple of questions:
a) Is 'rooting' as simple as running Easy Rooting Toolkit v1.0? (I have come from flashing a HTC HD2 which took a lot more work than simply clicking on one .exe)
b) Are the risks of 'rooting' as big as 'flashing' a new ROM in that the phone could become bricked (memory corrupted)?
c) For now, I only want to root my phone to remove the pre-installed apps. Would uninstalling any of the apps cause any problems with any part of the stock ROM?
d) Will a rooted phone with uninstalled apps prevent an official ICS update?
Hi there,
Before flashing a new rom get to know a few things first... Go through the thread of the developer who has uploaded the rom, you should know about installation procedure (which is very important) so that you don't end up with a costly paper weight and the features which are available/not working on the new rom. Then you may proceed with flashing a new rom. In your case, I suggest you go through this thread.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025....Here you will find a collection of stock roms with root so that you won't lose the original look of the rom, after which you can remove preinstalled apps with root unistaller etc etc(But be sure you don't touch the system apps which may crash the rom)... In case you want to revert back to the stock rom then you may find this thread handy....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025.....After you flash a rom with root your phone can't get any firmware upgrades and the only option is to revert back to stock rom....Hope you got answers to your questions....
Could someone else please answer my questions specifically?

A)Yeah.Rooting is simple.Just flash a pre-rooted rom(Development section) and flash cf-root kernel via mobile odin. But remember donot use pc-odin to flash any rom other than stockrom and the pre-rooted stock rom.
B)Yeah rooting is as risky as flashing because of involvement of kernel which need to be flashed.
C)Yeah Some apps might .A soft brick at the extreme. So do a nandroid backup and start experimenting with the apps.If it causes problem restore nandroid and you will return to the working state.
D)Nope.Removing system apps doesnot prevent ICS update. But it is not recommended to update whn rooted thru OTA or kies. Its safer to flash stock ICS through PC ODIN.
Finally confirm if your phone is N-7000 because I have not seen a uk-note till now...
A few questions
Hi Guys
I have a few questions to add if that's OK.
I just got my new note.. Sim free and in Ireland I had a Galaxy Nexus before and only had it two weeks, It was already rooted and flashed with another rom when I got it..
I'm not pushed on flashing a rom as i want to get used to the phone first.
I do want to root it to allow me to install apps I have downloaded on a nas drive that I have that I can access from anywhere.
My Model Number is GT-N7000
Android 2.3.6
Baseband N7000XXLA4
Kernel Version 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341
Build Number GINGERBREAD.XXLA6
I'm new to android so if anyone can point me to the easiest way to root and the full benefits that would be great..
Should I Root before I install apps? Or will a root not remove things I have installed? Apps? Pics? Messages ect..
Can I use Easy Rooting Toolkit v1.0?
Thanks In Advance

Thanks for this . Would you think that an official OTA (or kies) ICS update would get ride of some of the pre-installed samsung apps and offer a cleaner stock android? If so, I might hold out for this.

Not sure of using ota or kies because Both are just crap and have never used for ages!!!!ODIN the best way to flash any stock rom.So through odin,Your old samsung apps are replaced with new ones but not user apps as far as this new ICS goes. But it is all good to do a factory reset after flashing any rom to avoid any problems later. But by doing this, you lose all your user apps
Hi Guys,
sorry for this noobie question but I'm quite new to android.
I've passed hours reading the forum about roms, kernels etc...but there are so much information for my little brain that now I don't know what to do...
So I'm on a GB 2.3.6 XXLC1 stock rom, with Franco's kernel 3.x version and I'd like to install Crisleko's ICS V7 ROM on my device but i'm not able to know how really to install it on the phone...the phone is full rooted. I wouldn't like to brick my note, so here's the reason of my question :
In my case, which is the most efficient way to install this rom ?
Sorry if this question has already been posted, but within all answer, I don't know what to do....
Thanks a lot for yout support.
You can flash the rom also directly from CWM. The reboot into recovery and select : _install zip from sd card _chose zip from sd card _select the criskeloRom zip _click yes ...... Flash it from Cwm i raccomend the Cwm app.from chainfire : _copy the rom to internal sd _start Cwm manager _ chose flash update _select criskelo Rom _click on yes...
I'm also afraid to hardbrick my device, and dude, i bought it 5 days ago lol
I had a Galaxy Nexus and flashed, installed new kernels, rooted, did everything.
I asked few ppl here and they said we should wait till the official ICS comes, it will take 1 or 2 weeks, better than hardbrick my note <3
Not quite because most bricks actually happen because of the stock ICS ROM.
Flash whatever you want, just remember to go from GB and not stock ICS, and remember - never do a factory reset while on stock ICS kernel.
If you need to do a factory reset, just flash a GB kernel, or flash GB stock with Odin, then wipe and flash ICS back.
Also, CM9 highly recommended
Ok guys, thanks a lot for answers. I've tryed to flash this rom and everything worked fine except the fact I'm a noobie and restore with TB Apps and user datas ^^. Now i'll know that user data don't have to be restored !
So I'm came back to my GB rom...
Maybe one more question :
I'll installed a new rom, I think i've understood what to do and what not to do with wipe from ICS roms but after wipe data / factory resest ans dalvik cache, is there a way to have a connection wizard software so a to set everything up because I had no data connection anymore ?
Thank a lot for your support
Hello Pascal-T,
I think I'm in the exact same position as you (except that I'm not rooted yet), but i'm also on GB LC1 and I want to go to Crisleko's ICS V7 ROM !
As I understood, you have directly install Crisleko's ICS V7 ROM on your rooted GB LC1 ? So it's not needed to install an other lower ICS ROM before going to the LQ3 of Criskelo ?
If yes this is great, then I just have to root my GB LC1, do a backup up with TB, and then I can follow Crisleko's ICS V7 ROM topic ? (At the begining I though I should first flash a stock ICM ROM but It seems to be THE THING TO AVOID).
If someone can just confirm these informations, that would be perfect
Thank you !
Well this seems like a perfect place for me to post Ive asked around, And searched a lot, But still cant figure this out. I dont wanna sound like a noob ( I am to the Note )
Ive been flashing and modding for years, Samsungs, HTC's, Sony Ericssons so I know what to do.
The thing is, All the threads I read about the bricking, and how to avoid it, Just keep forever linking me to different threads, and i end up back at the start. I dont have the Note yet (should be arriving any time) Im thinking of Only rooting for now as im not confident enough to flash without errors. But when i do, what i need to do is, Use ODIN to revert to GB (Unless it comes with GB) then:
1, Flash CF-ROOT kernel
2, Flash abyss safe kernel in cwm
3, reboot back into cwm
4, Do a full wipe
5, Install a ROM
Is that right ? I like the look of PA but would like to try a modded stock ROM to start with, So any recommendations ?
TIA

Hi there,
I recently bought a new GNOTE and i want to flash it for paranoid ROM (or another ROM ICS based). It was on GB XXLA6 and i found it was impossible to root / unlock so i used this method :
- Flash N7000OXAKJ4_DBT with ODIN
- Zerglin rush CF-ROOT
- Flash N7000OXELA1_SER NO WIPE with ODIN mobile (EVEROOT, SU, MOBILE ODIN, CWM MANAGER)
- Flash Abyssnote 4.2 Kernel
Otherwise i needed to unlock my SIM so I used Galaxy_S unlock.
Everything is ok now but i'm on gingerbread... And I want a new ICS ROM ! I had a HTC Sensation and I flashed it lot of time easily...
I've read every FAQ I found but I've head a lot about brick so I'm a little bit afraid...
"DON'T flash FROM ANY SAMSUNG ICS OR ROMS BASED ON SAMSUNG KERNELS (my CM9, AOSP, etc)"
Humm I'm confused, does it means that I must not flash a ROM with samsung stock KERNEL or FROM a samsung stock kernel ??
Does it increase the binary counter / cause yellow triangle ?
I someone can help myself... Can I safely flash this ROM with my phone spec ?
Sorry for the noob question, and for my bad english and thanks for reading/answering.
you are already on GB and on abyssnote42, so it's ok to data wipe and flash (that's the safest you can be).
of course, there is ALWAYS a risk. the choice is yours.
and no, it does not cause increase in binary counter or yellow triangle since you will be doing it from CWM.

Since you are on a rooted GB rom you can follow the instruction on the Paranoid website
Install Rom: http://d-h.st/lU1
Install HYBRID Gapps: http://4ndr01d.com/drcmda/common/
Wipe caches, factory reset is a must if you're coming from another rom than CM9
If your statusbar is gone after the first reboot: longpress Powerbutton > Toggle Statusbar
Reboot and edit your Apps Dpi under Settings/Paranoid Settings/P.A.D. Hold the powerbutton to see the new fullscreen-togglebutton
I flashed this rom from a rooted GB rom without problem.
Thanks for your help I will keep you update when I flash my phone
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
Hey,
Flashing done and work perfectly ! Thanks for your answers.
Can I flash other ICS custom ROM from paranoid or I need to downgrade to GB ?
Don't know if i understood but the only way to flash safely is not to use samsung non rooted stock rom with samsung stock kernel on ICS ?
Hey guys,
So a friend of mine asked me to upgrade the ROM on his note which is running stock sammy ICS 4.0.3 and also running or crawling like ****e to 4.2.2 so first thing that comes to my mind.... easy. Root it flash CWM, backup ROM, flash slim bean build 6.
But after reading about in the note section for an hour the notion of easy went out of the window, this note is running kernel version 3.0.15-N7000DDLPA-CL711285 BasebandN7000DDLP4 Build NoIML74k.DDLPA checked out Phil3759's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191 but could not find my kernel on the list.
Guys kindly guide me as how I should go about flashing CWM so I can install custom ROM's without placing the phone in a situation that might lead to it getting bricked
Thanks in advance

I am in the same situation bro(same Kernel). did you get a solution. My phone circuit board conked off and hence I installed a new PBA however I liked kk4 and want to install on this. couldnt get the kernel
4.0.3 is the most susceptible to brick bug. So either move to a safe kernel or upgrade to a newer version like 4.0.4 or JB. Check in Philz thread for your build number kernel. If you can't find the same, any 4.0.3 kernel should do. Else upgrade the rom to a newer stock.
Or if you just want to install a custom rom, then flash any kernel and get into cwm recovery and go about the rom flashing instructions.
