Light Bleed - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

screen edge bleed. How many of you have light bleed from around the display area when viewed at an angle? I've gone in to try 3 different phones from 3 diff deliveries and they ALL do it. Even the 3 display model do it. It's driving me nuts. Show of hands to say I'm not crazy and there is still hope to find a good one...

No, they do that, trust me. It's the way they are assembled. I noticed it as soon as I got the phone, but it doesn't bother me because I know a lot of HTCs are like this. It isn't a defect in quality; rather, a result of the design. Unless your screen is leaking and letting in dust, don't worry about it. It might be annoying at first but you get past it. My Vivid does this and so have the other three HTCs I've had in the past.

Agree completely. I'm on my second Vivid, and both had/have light bleed, especially noticeable when looking at the phone flat towards the top of the phone. I'm a first-time HTC guy so I initially thought the same...that it was an issue with my phone. However, trips to see Vivids at multiple AT&T retail stores, and my second phone, made me comfortable that it was not just "my phone".

That it is endemic to every phone you see means HTC cant build a damn phone properly. Ive never had this issue with my Tytn, Tytn II, EVO, EVO 3D, Inspire. Meaning they can do it right, it is NOT an acceptable result for this phone. The rezound doesnt do it, nor does the sensation. Im going back and if this last shipment doesnt have it fixed its bye bye. God HTC used to be such high quality, now they are turning into metal bodied samsungs...

God damn, calm down. That the light bleeds doesn't necessarily mean the design is wrong or of poor quality. That's just the design. It doesn't affect the way the phone works or how tough it is, it's JUST designed like that. Go ahead and exchange it, your new Vivid will have the same problem and you'll probably just be more bitter about it. Just because one or two phones from a company aren't designed as well as you'd want them to be, doesn't mean the whole company is junk. If you want, go exchange it for a Skyrocket and wince at the ****ty resolution, ghost lines running down the screen and cheap plastic. But none of that should matter because the screen won't bleed.
I have a car from 1991 with 221,000 miles on it. Not that much for that car in particular. I also have a car of the same make from 2000. And while there are definitely differences in build quality and material, the newer car has 322,000 miles on it. Both are running beautifully. Original engines and transmissions, starters, alternators, AC compressors, and basically everything else. But eh, the one from '00 has slightly harder dashboard material, so it's crap and that company can't build cars right.
But you know what, to each his own. *Just my opinion.

Uhm light bleeding out the edges of the display is not a 'designed that way' type issue. Its a 'we have no quality control' issue. Next youll say that the screen coming unglued from the incredible/evo a while ago was a design aspect. Come on man. To those of us who actually design and build such products, its a manufacturing issue, not design. NO ONE designs them this ****ty.

I build engines and work on cars for a living. I do know where you're coming from. So it wasn't designed with as tight tolerances as it could have been or other phones are. But that does not necessarily mean it is of poor quality. They could (and yeah they really should) have built the phone a bit differently so as to avoid that light bleed. It isn't pretty especially with devices that do it more than others.
But you know, I still have my Incredible. It drowned in a river once, fell from the roof of my house (yeah...), has been dropped numerous times, and was submerged into a toilet by a 2-year old at one point. nasty **** man.. but I still have it. I use it as a "micro" tablet around my house. And I've never had a single problem with it.
Now that may just be my luck with my device but in all honesty, I have no problems believing it to be reliable. Others may not be so lucky. But in the case of the Vivid, I agree with you one hundred percent - the light bleed is something that definitely should not be present. But I don't really think it's that big of a problem in terms of actual quality. In manufacturing or in design, it isn't the best. But the device as a whole is solid and sturdy. With my first Vivid, after I bricked it (well not really bricked but gave up on it), I knew I was to exchange it. So I tried gauging the durability of the thing by twisting it, hit it on the table a couple of times and stuff. It was still fine.
Oh and I had a Captivate since new. The GPS never worked no matter what tweaks I did to it, the loudspeaker took a dump two months in, the volume rocker is so soft you don't feel a click, and it overheats while charging, even when it's off. Otherwise it was a great phone.. but eh. Too many bad experiences with Samsung in the past.
I don't know. I do respect your opinion man and don't underestimate your knowledge. Simply expressing my own.

I noticed this on my vivid a few days after I got it but didn't post about it because it doesn't really bother me. You can only see it if you tilt the phone forward and look into the housing and how many of us are going to do that other to look at the "defect." As long as it doesn't effect me using the phone then I'm good.

I read in bed at night and in the morning, so the display is dimmed down, but the light bleed stays nearly the same brightness.... its very distracting.

Where Does All That Light Go?
If your phone bleeds light around the edges (of the screen?), where does it go? Will the vivid eventually run out of light when it all bleeds out?
Seriously, I took the case off my Vivid, took it into a dark room, and turned it on. No light coming around the edges of the screen. Of course, even if the screen was not seated properly and some light leaked out around the edge, I wouldn't see it because of the case. I guess I got a phone from a better batch.

None here...
I have absolutely no light bleed on my phone, and even if it was there its a phone not a pace maker , I've seen the Vivids with the bleed at the store and it still wasn't that bad. Someone is being overly dramatic.

Im not talking about light coming out AROUND the glass. Im talking about where the bezel meets the actual display area.

Is this light underneath the glass and visible through it? Is it leaking from where the plastic sides of the phone meet the glass, or what. If you could show pictures or actually clarify further, it'd be easier to understand. Now I don't think we are all imagining the same kind of light bleed you are seeing.
The gap around the glass and the gap where the bezel meets the display are the same thing..
In the case of what brucegil is referring to, no light is bleeding on my Vivid. Nor did it bleed on my last one or my past HTC devices. What I and I believe everyone else thinks you're referring to is the light you can see around the edges of the screen when the phone is viewed at an angle. That light is underneath the glass.

I just returned my black vivid for a white vivid today and my black one had a lot of light leak but this white one doesn't have any

Are there still issues with the screen cracking on the Nexus One?

I'm interested in purchasing a Nexus One but I'm reading a lot of threads and posts online via Google about screens cracking for no reason or after small drops.
The majority of them are dated from a few months ago. Is this still an issue?
Thanks.
Those are isolated incidents and not "issues".
Of course the screen is going to crack if you keep dropping your phone or sitting on it! That's one big DUH. I have when stupid sh*t like that becomes a big story.
Having said that, I have dropped my N1 several times (each time it was in pouch) and I sometimes carry it the front pocket of my trousers - no problem so far.
Now go and look at the following videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1sz5c-R9h0
&
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfqwKa4bT74
Hope this answers your question
I've never really dropped a phone since moving to the big screened smart phone devices... Until... I got my Nexus One.
I've only dropped it once but it was from about 3 ft up and it landed on its top (near the power button). All that happened was the batter cover popped off with the battery and there was a little scuff from where the stone floor took some of the finish off. No biggie. Everything has worked great since and that was back in mid February.
Im typically not one to drop my phones but the one I was most excited about I did in the 1st month. Only once though!
I gotta agree with a lot of people here. I was a bit nervous about getting my N1 hearing all the complaints people were having. I have not had a single one of them. I have no dust under my screen, I have no strange purple or green hue, my screen has not cracked and it's in my pocket all of the time. Sometimes I lean again stuff, or crouch down and think 'oh crap', but it's done nothing bad. I've dropped it twice, but it had a case on so I don't know if that's as reliable as anyone else.
People are saying the touch sensitive buttons are unresponsive, but you just have to hit the top part of them and not the center... which sounds like a hassle, but by day 2 or 3, it becomes commonplace and not an issue at all.
I get a full day of battery life, usually ending up around 30-40% by the end of the night, which is about the same (if not better) than my old WinMo based FUZE... and while some people complain about this, it's a common occurance in any smartphone (or superphone)... it's the price one pays to have a phone that practically funtions as a constantly running laptop.
I say these are all isolated incidents that people are blowing out of proportion because it seems to be human nature to point out the negatives more than to point out the positives. Any electronic device is bound to have a few bad units, it's just the way technology works *shrug*
It would be my recommendation that if you are looking to get an N1, you should. I don't think you will be disappointed, I know I wasn't.
And while you didn't ask, some accessories I would recommend getting if you choose to get the N1 (as this was my next hunt when I was looking to purchase my N1)...
The Case-Mate Tough Case... it's tough, durable, doesn't block out 3G or WiFi signals, fits perfectly, but adds some bulk (not too much and for me actually made the phone a little more comfortable to hold and less awkward feeling like I'm going to drop it)
http://www.case-mate.com/Google-Cases/Case-Mate-Google-Nexus-One-Tough-Cases.asp
And for a screen protector I use the Clarivue Ultra-Clear... I forget I have it a screen protector on there most the time it's so clear, and it's static based so no liquids or adhesives. Plus it can be washed and re-used.
http://www.clarivue.com/htc-nexus-one-screen-protector.html
also people need to keep in mind that the glass on the n1 is larger than the iphone (3.7" vs 3.5") so its going to be more suceptible to damage... this applies to the uber smartphones as well (HD2 and EVO with 4"+ screens)
there have not been any random cracked screen reports in a few months now, so i think the issue is fixed on newer devices.
Thanks for the input, guys.
I'm concerned because there's a lot of more results on Google for "cracked screen nexus one" than there is for "cracked screen htc incredible", "cracked screen iphone", "cracked screen htc HD2" and so on.
I also saw complaints about getting dust on the screen and the color hues issue.
I'd like to get a HTC incredible but I'm on HSPA with Bell in Canada. I don't know if there's plans to release it like they did with the milestone. So I'm considering the Nexus One.
And thanks for the cases suggestion, lostinbeta. It is appreciated.

I don't believe there is a flawless Nexus out there

I think whether your Nexus is flawless or not depends on whether you're noticing the faults. If the faults aren't noticeable to you then that's as good as them not being there but I believe they are still there.
I'm on my 5th Nexus and it has 9 hot pixels. They're tiny, so you wouldn't notice them if you weren't keen-eyed but they're there. Most people probably would not notice them. That's 3 out of 5 so far with pixel problems.
All units I've had so far have had a problem on the left side of the device. Either the back cover doesn't sit quite right in the middle left area, or the screen is lifting. I don't think it's possible to have neither of these issues because of the way the thing is built. Have a real good look down the left side, is the rim slightly warped inwards anywhere? Is the back cover sitting with a tiny gap between it and the rim anywhere? Does the back cover stick out by a hair's width from the rim anywhere? Is the screen lifting ever so slightly anywhere? I bet at least one of these is true. Again, you may not notice minor screen lift or the back cover sitting with a slight gap but the fault is still there. It's just designed badly and if you don't have a screen lift issue, I'm sure you will eventually.
Every unit I've owned has had backlight bleed. Some obvious, some less so.
I think LCD problems such as backlight bleed and hot or dead pixels are widespread. I think the screen lift/left side design problem involves every single unit.
These are just faults that are minor and to be honest, may not bother or even be visible to most users. But they do mean the level of QC is far far lower than most other manufacturers. People make the argument that the Nexus is cheap, so "what do you expect?", but this is beside the point.
I will never buy another Asus product, ever.
Shame you're so unlucky. Honestly, I'm mind-numbingly picky about my gear but my GN7 has none of the faults you list.
The fact is, the overwhelming majority of happy users will not post one single review stating as such. People with problems complain. Only complaints get heard.
Over the years I've had loads of Asus tech; every last thing is/was top notch.
I do hope you have better luck with future purchases

Completely happy here as well, no problems.
There seems to be too many people wanting absolute perfection out of a mass produced cheap as chips device, and they do all they can to find the tiniest of flaws.
Dead pixels are obvious, so you would notice them immediately and quite entitled to take it back, however I'm wondering if what the OP is seeing are tiny tiny flaws in the filters which are only visible when viewing a black screen on maximum brightness in the dark. All LCDs will show something like this if you look hard enough. You couldn't use it like this without burning your eyes out so in everyday use, it simply isn't noticable and isn't a flaw, it is just a limitation of the technology. Same goes for back light bleed, all LCD panels have it to some extend, and looking for it in the dark at maximum brightness is sure to find it, but again would you use the tablet at such settings.
News alert: We do not have perfect display technologies yet, they all have flaws or cons, especially if you look for them. I paid £1500 for a 15" LCD panel not that long ago, that had more flaws anyone is complaining about now but had advantages over and above CRT at the time you just accepted them as part of the technology and enjoy the advantages.
I read all the same complaints about my HTC One X and almost didn't buy it, but so glad I did and zero problems. I came in here and read about all the issues with the Nexus 7 and almost didn't buy it, but remembered reading all the doom and gloom and about the One X, so bought it and absolutely love it.
Yes devices will have real faults or problems, and complain and get it exchanged by all means, I would, but around XDA they seem to go further than broken devices into complaints about microns of differences. Who cares about a hairs width if the device is working perfectly! Every forum in XDA is the same.
Regards
Phil
My first is good enough for me after numerous stress tests. Sorry for you.
Btw, I'm not that picky about it anyway.
I think that also one of the problems is just human - that we hold these devices rather than set them down - and thus our fingers are always sensing microns of differences as we shift our fingers around. 3/1000ths edge or mating error in my laptop (as I type on my actual lap) is nothing - on my tablet a constant reminder this is a cheap device!
I do think pixels could easily be checked in process, and weighted for defect before shipping. Any in constant view - like center 80% - are unacceptable. Perimeter edge pixels not so much...
It's your bad luck, I'm sorry to say.
I'm on unit 3 which has zero screen-lift, zero dead pixels, zero problematic light bleed (eg no flare that affects visible colour density), zero problems with back cover seating. Which is also my good luck.
I've said before on this forum, there are clearly WAY too many QA issues on these tablets, and I have been advising friends and family to stay clear of them until the issues are sorted, but this does not mean that ALL units are defective - as a read around the various threads here will reveal.
Ive got 2 C80 versions. They are flawless. I also know one at work who is very happy, and he owns apple devices including iCrap!
You can believe whatever you want. Doesn't make you right.....just like I don't believe you have had 5 defective units. That's my prerogative. Doesn't make me right, either.
And nobody really cares what you buy!!!!!
If you can't be happy after 5 units you need to buy something else.I would never keep buying the same thing after the second was not up to par with my expectations.
Anyone having trouble after having the first one replaced is just a glutton for punishment or looking something to whine about. They make ipads every day.
I'm now on my fourth Nexus, had two C60 or C70 that had screen lift and stuck pixels along with some backlight bleed. Picked up a C80K which had a small amount of screen lift and really bad backlight bleed along the bottom of the screen, which was really irritating when watching a video in low light. Took that back for another C80K which has a very small screen lift and a faint backlight bleed, I don't know whether I'm just being picky or not but so far I'm OK with this one.
Got one and that had a washed out screen and image retention. Ridiculous how they can have so many devices out there with flaws.
Screen lift on left side as well.Have insurance with whom I bought it at. Waiting for a few months to see if these issues get worked out before I go and exchange it. Not that big of a deal to me, but it is there none the less.
Just fix the damn thing yourself and enjoy it.
My first one was flawless until I killed it screwing with the bootloader. Second one had screen lift that I fixed using washers. The official Asus fix is leaving the screws out. I'm pretty sure I'd rather spend 30seconds doing that myself then deal with your nonsense aggregation.
Yes there is a design flaw with the screen. Most will have this. Going through 9 is retarded. You should just stop your wasting everyone's time (Your and Asus).

I agree with the op. I've gone through several. All of which with the same screen lift. However I plan to fix it myself rather than complain about a product. Nothing beats this tablet in its price range and form factor. So I'm just gunna deal with what I got.

My first one had screen lift, did an RMA to Google, second unit perfect no problems.
I cant speak for people reporting sending 20 plus units back to google and still having issues. But I do believe the people buying from retail locations seeing a screen lift and returning it again and expecting not to see screen lift, when most likely it was being swapped from the same shipment their defective product came in on. Probably should just get the RMA process through google a shot
Well, my C90 seems pretty flawless.. hope I won't find any problems. As far as I tested it, there are none of the known issues.

Agreed... But the number of folks having issues and having raised them is now sizable. Check the XDA polls, over 700+ folks having reported various defects as documented in multiple threads, some of the defects are unbelievable if one thinks about manufacturing standards or QC, or just the design. I know in terms of percentage it still may be very less folks with issues, but just the type of issues reported is scary enough. I see similar posts in other ASUS forums and the reason I postponed on Prime as well.
I hoped that ASUS/GOOG would at least own up and make a statement that they have manufacturing defects, seeing users of these new tablets trying to fix these issues themselves or just living with it is pathetic imho...
I've got one c70 and one c80. Both are flawless, and I'm a really picky person. I grabbed them from Walmart.

How come HTC have had such a rough journey with the One?

I mean, build quality issues everywhere, and not just with the One. I get it that first batch phones are prone to act up, but somehow HTC always have phones like these and not just in first batches. Why is it like this? Don't they have any sort of quality control at all?
Don't get me wrong, I am a happy HTC One owner with a seemingly faultless phone (just a 1mm gap that I didn't even notice, but my younger brother), but this is scaring me, a lot.
With phones costing as much as they do, and only getting more expensive, you'd expect them to be of a certain quality and not just a five-second put together.

In all fairness, HTC aren't alone when it comes to bad batches. Literally every phone has had its problems, as soon as a phone hits the masses there's always going to be problems. And in all honesty the one has stood up pretty well. Besides the phone getting hot I can't say that I've has any issues myself.

But it seems that HTC have the highest amount of faulty and fault-prone phones. I mean, gaps and things not being fitted correctly. I get that for the first few batches, but now? An acquaintance of mine is on his 5th (fifth) One and the store he bought the original one from (a carrier store but the phone itself is unbranded) has now contacted HTC and he has been promised a Dev edition of the phone and that it will be thoroughly checked before being handed to him.
It shouldn't have to be like that and it's not exactly helping them up from the ground.

I have seen a lot of them coming through where i work, maybe i've been quite lucky with past phones, but yea you do have a point with HTC, I think that's why they beefed up their repair service, i've got a number for them which I sometimes give to clients and the quickest turnaround was one day (normally 3 - 5 days, as opposed to two or more weeks) which is pretty phenomenal when you consider that the likes of samsung and blackberry take two weeks to get you your phone back and you seldom have any input on what happens to your phone, kind of like your friend getting promised a dev edition.
My desire HD had a GPS problem, and this is actually my third One, the first one had a back button problem, the second i found that it got quite hot and the third was just as hot when stressed, seems that it's just the way this phone is.
Saying all that though, I apparently got quite lucky with my samsung, only had the one and it was perfect for the ten months i had it for, but again people coming in to my work place with SDS, overheating, call related problems like drops and silence, 3G drop outs, broken wifi, screen anomalies, the works, and blackberries, omfg, that company has got build quality issues, the middles optic button breaking and the software, my word i don't know where to begin, freelancing the bbm software is probably the best move RIM have done in years.
Overall i think that some people are simply unlucky with their phones, I think that HTC's aren't too bad in comparison to other handsets but they are definitely one of the companies that have issues.

The One does get hot, there's no way you can get around that and it's the metal that's to blame. I think it goes without saying that metal conducts heat and cold a lot better than plastic. Though the S4 has occasional overheating as well.

I spent about a week with it and was about to exchange it for the S4 and return all my bits, but it really grew on me, not to mention the build quality is probably the best i have ever seen on a phone (bar a few bad eggs of course) coupled with the fact that they're both generally the same hardware bar the overclock on the S4 i decided to opt for the One and since then i'm constantly reaffirmed that i did the right thing, I'd missed sense since the EVO 3D and i'm glad i stuck it out, the S4 for me was a bit floaty, if you know what i mean, everything is really bright and in your face, I knew i would have just put apex and a theme on there and had done with touchwiz, I can still do that on the One but i actually like sense this time round.
Plus there are a lot of experimental features like the air gestures which i knew were just extra factors for possible failings, many of which have already been reported (phone calls in pockets, volume going up and down on it's own, screen clicking things without you doing anything, etc)
I've heard about a few things you can do about the heat on the One, apparently theres a cooling feature in some of the kernels but i'm not holding much hope for it's actual real life performance, i guess time will tell.

The S4 can take a hike. I could have accepted that it's plastic, but it has a lot of things I don't like:
Glossy/slippery polycarbonate
Physical home button
Ugly design
Samsung
I have been a samsung fan since the S2, but have to say, the build quality of the ONE, even with the so called gaps, is a lot better than the S3 and S4.
The galaxy s2 was amazing for build quality, no squeeking back cover, and withstood drops onto concrete without breaking. The S3 and S4 and squeeking, badly built, dainty devices that break with only minor 1 foot drops.
I've dropped my HTC One, twice, from over a meter, onto stone tiles, with only scuffs to the corners of the housing. Two friends have broken their SGS3's, one twice, with only 1 foot drops onto the floor.
As for overheating, my One gets what could only be described as warm, not hot. Sgs4 overheats like mad.
I think HTC are getting a rough deal, because they aren't Samsung or Apple. As soon as you tell someone your phone is HTC, they instantly lose interest and wonder off lol.

In all fairness, HTC aren't alone when it comes to bad batches. Literally every phone has had its problems, as soon as a phone hits the masses there's always going to be problems. And in all honesty the one has stood up pretty well. Besides the phone getting hot I can't say that I've has any issues myself.

Agreed. OP, head on over to the Apple forums, search for iPhone 5 threads from October last year and you'll see that there were tons of issues with the iPhone 5 on launch from the cosmetic (the electroplating on the chamfered edges was poor and you get screen sensitivity issues when you use the phone while it's plugged in).
I think we're just more sensitive with HTC issues because they've had a really rough time of it the past 24 months -- whether it's in the financial press or among tech sites and everything gets blown out of proportion.

I know about the issues the iPhone 5 had. Anyways, I think everyone are praising Samsung because Samsung has a lot of money and easily enough money to pay off reviewers. I mean, why else would anyone with a fully functioning brain even remotely like something made out of glossy polycarbonate and have an ugly design at that?
It's to me something extremely hard to understand, but maybe it's because I think logically, who knows.

What rubbish. The S3 or 4 for that matter might feel less strong, but if anything they are stronger and the fit and finish is better. My One (im on my third after rejecting the other 2 for faults) is lumpy on the sides, it has variable gaps all around and seems easily damaged. Its already more marked than my S3 was at the end of its life despite being in a case.
I eventually cracked the back of my S3, I replaced it with a new original part for £8 and sold it on for £300 after a year. I have already seen marked HTC Ones sell for less.
Its a beautiful phone but flawed like no other.

Lol!
I would accept that the phone is made out of polycarbonate or other types of plastic, but why the hell did they go with the glossy/slippery finish?
The S3 and S4 both feel budget, there's no denying that and one doesn't want to put a case on his or her One solely because it feels so great but I will have to put a case on it because it's more prone to serious injuries than any other phone I've ever had. Plastic seems to withstand damage the most. I think I've dropped my S3 in a lot of various ways. Screen down, screen up, each of the sides and then I remember I dropped it and it literally bounced off on a solid concrete floor and how does it look today? Almost mint. It's got minor scratches on a the back only visible if you look like really close. It's got some color loss in one of the upper corners and that's about it, the screen has no scratches whatsoever.
That's what I liked with the S3. I don't dare drop the One.

Then maybe you needed to word your comment better rather than sound so self righteous. There is no right and wrong in design.
Its cultural, design is very much a cultural thing. Take cars for example, Americans like their cars massive, bloated, over the top, loud, garish. The Chinese like them bland, slab sided with tiny wheels, ill proportioned to my eyes.
Some like the glossy finish, it doesnt take Samsung to pay them off. after all the designers and whoever signed off the design must like it, and it has sold 10 million in a month..

I don't know why you're flaming the other poster: he's only expressing his opinion. Also, what you meant to write was "you're too self-important..."
Seriously, though -- the main critique against the GS4 is that it's ugly -- the reviewers are just afraid of not getting any inside information on upcoming Samsung releases which is why they're circumventing the fact that the S4 is a poorly-designed device.

In the first place, those sales figures are meaningless absent context: you have to ask things like: did Samsung subsidize the sales? Was there a discount incentive to order in bulk? How many units were available to ship? Also, you have to take into account the fact that there were production issues with the HTC One.
Besides, HTC have come and said that they've sold 5 of the One. That isn't too bad considering that Samsung can outspend everyone outside of Apple to market their devices -- and that includes giving retailers sales incentives and their more aggressive advertising.
All I can say is this.
I had an s2 for about 2yrs and the main problems I had with it was, the charger port going out. Overheating, it would get almost burning hot in my pocket, and with the jelly bean update the battery die way to fast. Would lose 3-5% just by unplugging.
The s3 didn't add much I wanted so I didn't get one
My friend did and had the s2 before. Said it wasn't much of a change and that the s3 was cheap. He broke the battery back, chip the sides and then finally broke the screen.
Had the phone not about 6months. He said his old s2 was build better and last longer then that and he went back to it once the s3 was done.
To me the HTC one feels nice and I don't have a problem with anything. No overheating, crazy battery, I haven't drop it but I'm willing to beat it won't fall apart like a s3 or s4.
But to each his own. There is people who look iPhones but imo they are cheap parts of crap. Have replaced way to many screens for people that drop them from small Heights.

Why? Well this is what he said..
'It's to me something extremely hard to understand, but maybe it's because I think logically, who knows. '
So anyone who likes the S4 is not thinking logically? There is no logic to taste anyway..
I have said this before in previous threads but the S4 is a quality device. Its made of good quality plastic, and crucially, its made well. The HTC is also made of good quality materials, but its made badly. Whether you like how the material are used is not a build quality issue, its an issue of taste.
I'll try to word my sentences better next time. Sometimes, they sound better in my head and in my native language then come out sounding completely wrong in English. ^^

[Q] Diagonal lines across the entire screen

My HTC One screen seems to have some kind of mesh of faint diagonal lines running across the entire screen. It's kinda hard to explain, but basically when I look at the screen up close, it looks like the background of the Steam Android icon (see attachment). The lines are especially noticeable against light, single-coloured backgrounds; for example if I go to phone settings, look at the screen up close and slowly slide up and down, the lines become apparent since they do not move along with the rest of the graphics. The lines appear to be above the actual screen but below the glass surface. It almost seems like there's some kind of crappy screen protector on the screen or that the screen was somewhat dirty with fingerprints. I should also mention that the lines do not rotate with the screen; in portrait mode, they run from the top right of the screen to the bottom left, and in landscape mode from the top left to the bottom right.
Anyone encounter something like this before? I would probably think this was normal, that I'm just seeing the pixel array when I look at the screen up close, except that I never noticed lines like these on my previous One (which I returned due to several stuck pixels) even though I scoured the screen very closely.
I want to return the phone and get a new one, but I'm worried that they won't believe or see the issue at the store...
Mr. Me Too
I am typing this on a day old HTC One with this very issue. I've been surprised not to see any other mention of it, evidently it's either a rare fault or simply inherent to this digitiser and somehow nobody is noticing or bothered by it.
I've been agonising over the choice between this phone and the S4, I eventually settled for this and haven't had such buyers remorse in memory.
The screen is not only washed, more than I was expecting upon my return to LCD, but as you say it looks as though it is wet, covered in condensation or fingerprints. The overall effect resembles almost exactly the distortion you get from condensation caused by breath or sweat on the glass.
When looking closely it reveals itself as the diagonal lines of the digitiser as you describe.
It seems to cause the 'wet' or noisy colour distortion by being half darker stripes, and half naked. Almost like a micro version of reinforced safety glass.
If this is the nature of the HTC One, I would find it both surprising and in fact laughable.
However it is too precise in nature to be a fault or defect.
At this stage I'm planning on a swap for an S4 (albeit not for this reason alone, but that's another thread).
I did have some difficulty explaining and demonstrating the effect to the salesperson, and felt silly even talking about something so minute.
However - fat ugly bezel, washed colours and grey blacks aside - this is a flaw that completely ruins the display and therefore the phone itself for me.
I imagine this thread is DOA, if not let me know how you got on. It's an incredible relief to at least find one person who also noticed this and found it to be a problem.

Yes - it is.
These companies are charging iPhone prices for phones they claim compete with them. Only Samsung have so far proven themselves in this regard.
I'm not about to pay flagship prices for what feels like an 8 year old phone pasted onto the front of a slab of aluminum.
Almost every review has touted this display as gorgeous, 'the best they've ever seen on a smartphone!' - that's bull***t, it's trash.
Seemingly there's a reason HTC is on it's way out - putting a Nokia candy-bar phone on a piece of shiny metal isn't going to change that.

If you ever want to return a phone to tmobile, just tell them it's stuck in a reboot cycle and sometimes it's not. If you have an issue like the screen and they might not see the problem you see and therefore not take it back. It's better to tell them you have an issue that can't always be displayed. Like your phone just keeps rebooting, keeps turning off. I have done this many times just to return my phone.

Yeah I have the time and inclination to bash a phone I just bought for myself.
XDA is almost entirely made up of boards segmented into fanboy groups who serve as nothing but a broom to sweep any perceived criticisms of their devices under the proverbial rug.
I have a low post count because I've just bought the phone and am disappointed enough to discuss it.
HOLD UP GUIS LET ME SIGN TWO-YEAR SO THAT I CAN GO STRAIGHT HOME TO XDA AND BASH IT UNNECESSARILY!
F***ing lol.
The screen is awful by 2013 flagship standards.
No I don't think reviewers are paid off directly because I'm clearly not as simple minded as the pubescent pizza faces on this board.
Reviewers are wined and dined one way or another by the industry as a whole and wouldn't dare be overall negative about a brand or phone lest they stop receiving review units or invitations to press events.
The way genuine concern and criticism is shouted down and borderline stigmatised on this board is juvenile and pathetic. The irony of you considering us trolls when seemingly you're the ones with far too much free time, imagination, and lack of time spent outside of the womb.
The lines on the screen are normal. It's on mines and a friend's.
I only see it when holding the screen at an angle after turning the display off. It's just a funny little thing that's there. When the screen is being used it looks amazing!

You're all thinking of the horizontal bars visible behind the glass when the screen is off etc.
This is different. It's fine diagonal lines at a 45 degree angle that are constantly visible and affect the look of the screen at all times.

Like I mentioned in the OP, this was my second HTC One since I returned my first One due to several stuck pixels on the screen. The first one did not have these diagonal lines, as a result of which the screen looked much better than on the second One. Before returning my second One, I also went to the store and compared my One to a demo unit side by side, and the demo unit did not have this issue.

This is a different issue. The lines I'm describing are only visible when the screen is on.
Shortly after creating this thread, I returned my second HTC One to the store I bought it from and they sent it to HTC for servicing. It came back two weeks later with a service report saying that they had replaced one of the speakers and the SIM tray, despite the fact that I never experienced nor reported any issues with either. When I turned the phone on, I immediately noticed that the screen was exactly the same, the diagonal lines were still present. I commented about this to the salesperson and he also noticed the lines right away. He then suggested that the phone be sent back to HTC again with a more detailed explanation of the issue and apologised that the issue had not been resolved. That was a week ago, and I'm still waiting to hear back.
I'm not mad at HTC, phones can be defective and it seems that this is a rare issue. I am, however, somewhat annoyed by the fact that they replaced a speaker and the sim tray but did nothing to the screen, but hopefully they'll have a closer look at the screen this time around.
OK, now I am getting a bit mad. My phone just got back from its second two-week trip to HTC's service centre in Poland and the screen issue still hasn't been fixed. Instead, the service report says that two speaker components were swapped. This is the second time I sent my phone to them for servicing because the SCREEN is defective and the second time they mess around with SPEAKERS even though I have at no point indicated that there are any problems with the speakers. The guy at the store proved useless, his only suggestion being that they send the phone back to HTC a third time. He did, however, see the problem with the screen after I explained it to him. So I guess I have no choice but to send the phone back again and wait another two weeks for HTC to mess around with the speakers instead of actually fixing the damn screen.
So yeah, the HTC One is a great phone if you happen to get your hands on a unit that works as intended. So far I've been unable to do that.

Screen lifting on Rog 2

Greeting all! I've had my Asus Rog 2 for a little over a month I'd say. I have the proper Republic of Gamers version. I've noticed on the left side, where the attachment port is. An amount of flex in the screen along the seal. It's probably only a millimetre or so. But it flexes up and down when pressed, seeable from a side on view. The other side where the volume and power buttons are does not that this flex. There is also a light difference to sound when tapping that side of the phone while typing. Which I can only put down to the slight screen compressing on the left. I'm not sure how I can to notice it. Some people have said it might be an intentional aspect of the phone to give a small amount of flex/shock absorption but I can't find anything online mentioning it. I'm more leaning towards it being a fault in my phone. It's not once been dropped always been in a case. So yeah. Anyone able to shed light on this?

Finally. Someone with class and crazy sharp senses. I myself have severe OCD. I used to be very verbal about this kind of stuff on the AC forums xD. But on XDA i toned myself down.
First of all. Asus has crap for Quality Control. I had 2 ROGPHONE 2s with different power button height. And in between the lcd and bezel i could see glue. But okay nevermind.
As for the screen lifting near the accessory port, i do not seem to have it. Did you happen to sit on it? Or put the phone in the back pocket? Remembering that this is a tall phone.

Nope! I don't even take the phone to work with me. I swap to my previous phone.
I'm pretty sure it's a fault. It hasn't caused any issues apart from some annoyance to my OCD. As long as it doesn't worsen it's not something I can't live with.

It will worsen. You should get it replaced. Im sure it will eventually become wider from the flexing. Btw do you use the accessory port often? And do you have a tempered glass applied?

I wouldn't have a clue how. I'm in Australia and I purchased the phone via eBay.
I've used the accessory port once, just to check it out. Used the fan for maybe 15 minutes. Other than that I've never removed the piece of rubber there.
And yes, I have a tempered glass protector applied.

Yeah, it's 100% the screen. You can see the black edge of the screen move up and down from the dark drownish side of the phone. I'll just have to keep an eye on it I suppose. Bit annoying though. Pay almost $1,700 for one of the best phones on the market thinking you're going to get something issue free. Ha.

In Indonesia. Samsung has the best QC. I only had 1 issue with Samsung. Which was dust under the S7 Edge screen. But other than that they're very good. But Asus Indonesia is a joke. Its like we get a refurbished phone. I bought 2 rogphone 2s and each had their own defect. First had glue in between the screen and bezel, and my current unit has different volume/power button height.

Which is why I didn't want to buy the Tencent version. Plus it wouldn't work here correctly without getting into the firmware. I just figured I'd spend the money. Get the good one that'll have no issues. I asked the seller if they had warranty which the answer was no. They referred me to a few companies that do insurance on phones.
I've never bought a real expensive phone before, and my previous phone was 4 or 5 years old. It was an S5.
So it is annoying. But other than that I don't have any complaints about it.

Or you could use it until it shows signs of damage defect. Or bring it to an authorized repair shop. Im guessing lack of glue.

Lack of glue probably is the issue. I might see if there are any places around that can do it. Doubtful there would be around me. Best luck is probably Sydney. Which is a few hours away.

If you like DIY stuff. Try using LOCO glue. They helped me seal my Note 8 when it had cracks.

You seriously dont know how comfortable your comment has made me after reading it. I have always had this habit of checking my belongings (from my phone to my own body and muscles) to make absolutely sure there isnt a single even slighgest problem with it and guess what, there always is something to notice for me!
One of the reasons why I had never opted for an oled phone knowing I will notice the burn-ins one day when there isnt any other person who notices them.
Now I finally decided to go for this phone with the assumption that asus knows how to make gaming stuff, but now I can see several issues already, from the obvious red tint to the screen having lots of bandings and horizontal lines on lower brightness on gray color.
Now I can also feel the volume buttons not needing the same pressure and of of them being softer and also the rgb light on the back being poorly so when the light turns on there are some dots around it that also light up(i know that its only a white paper behind the back glass so if there are any print issues they will also light up)
Althought I dont have any serious issues(yet), im definitely not buying another phone from asus or any other not that famous brands for that matter. My last device was a sony x compact which I had for 3 years from when it came out and I still regret selling it, it was so damn perfect.
Btw, thanks for lettin me know that there is a disorder named OCD, I dont know why I hadnt searched about it already.

Hi, well thats quite a positive feedback. I had quite a backlash at AC forums. I've had people say that I'm making AC look like a Mental Issue Forum and some user even boasted how happy his credit card is if he buys a new phone when the old 1 is damaged.(credit card lol) Btw, i wouldn't say its a disorder. Different people have different standards. For me the Mercedes Benz S Klasse might be perfect, but for you it might not be.
And my OCD is definitely worse than yours. My phone can only be touched by me, and me myself dont touch the physical buttons(I'm afraid that it will be damaged).
And never feel alone about something. There will always be somebody out there having the same issue but not posting on the forums xD.

Not a fan of DIY.
So I stopped by a phone repair should this Arvo. The guy said to him it looks as though the battery is swelling. He said thats the side the battery is on so that is the most likely reason for it. He asked if the battery life was alright still.
Hard for me to really notice. I only use the phone on weekends and in the afternoons while home. I generally only charge it every second day, and I unplug the charger once it's at 100%. He said it isn't serious at the moment but if I notice battery charge fading fast, or if it swells a lot more to bring it back and he'll be able to put a new one in.
Just my ****ing luck to get shoddy battery, if that's the issue.

No they didn't. But it's their job so I'd say they can make a pretty fair guess.
I might go back there Monday, as I need my phone this weekend. On Monday I'll go back and tell them to do what needs to be done to fix it.
The battery is on the opposit side from the vent that would be on the left side of the vent, didnt you say that the problem was on the left side of your screen meaning its on the right side of the back??!

Is it? I haven't even checked that. I'll look that up. But yes, it is opposite to the vent.
You're right it is. Interesting. Awesome. Now I'm back to annoyed and confused. Haha.

Yeah trust me the customer services' first guess is battery swell which basicly doesnt happen soon unless you are always charging your phone while playing and overnight and draining it to the last percentage. But is can happen as a result of physical impact or damage, and when it happens you will most probably notice the shortened battery life so I would say it's not a battery problem unless of course proven otherwise.
