Root while retaining official OTA path? - Motorola Droid Bionic

Enjoyed the XDA Noob Video, but still have a noob question. Searched and couldn't find anything directly addressing this. Would have posted in the appropriate thread: R3L3AS3DRoot and 43V3R root for the BIONIC v2.1, but "New members (those with fewer than 10 posts) are not permitted to post to development-related forums."
I am completely stock .886. This is my first android phone. After a lot of research, I decided that I want to root in order to freeze some of the Verizon pre-installed bloat with Titanium back-up and to be able to use other root required apps like PS3 Sixaxis Controller app. I don't plan on installing any custom ROMs, as I'm happy with stock moto one for now.
If I root using "option #2" of the R3L3AS3DRoot and 43V3R root, will I be able to retain the official OTA update path as long as I don't install/update anything via cheesecake or any custom ROMs?

You can install custom roms and they wont update your kernel or radio. So if your. 886 and install a .893 based rom you will still have the. 886 kernel and radio. To change that you have to go completely stock and use one of Motorola's updates. Like through cheesecake.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App

also if you freeze any apps you will have to unfreeze the in order to get the update. just keep an eye out on xda for when the update has been sent. then just unfreeze apps and install update.

Thanks for the info! I went ahead and rooted. Backing up with bionic bootstrap now and then freezing some bloat. Glad I rooted, there are some pretty cool root apps for android.

[Q] Lost root after OTA update

My wife just got a DROID 3 yesterday. I promptly used Pete's Motorola Root Tools to root the device, then used Titanium Backup to freeze a bunch of the bloatware that came on it. Today, she installed an OTA update and lost root. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to get root back. I tried re-running Pete's Motorola Root Tools, but adb shows the device as offline, so it isn't working. Anyone know how to get root back? Thanks!
Edit: I forgot to mention that after I rooted the phone, I installed the DROID 3 bootstrapper and recovery. I took a full backup before I used TB to freeze the bloat. Don't know if recovering this backup is the way to go...
You wont get root for this version till it's been found, the root process has been fixed by Moto.
Just RSD back to 5.6.890:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339816
Then follow the below link, install rootkeeper to keep root from previous version then update with Hashcodes OTA file pull:

-smc
Thanks for the info. The phone shows that its currently at 5.6.890. Is this because the OTA update wasn't completely successful?

I think you probably updated to 5.6.890 not the leaked OTA. Maybe check to see USB debugging is still on and run the 1 click again. FYI the leaked update 5.7 is not rootable at this point but 5.6 is.
Thanks alot guys!! I was able to get her phone re-rooted and everything looks good.
Since getting a D3 I've picked up a few more techniques and strategies for easily keeping my root and customizing my device. I've found that Root Keeper will ensure you keep your root even after installing a custom ROM

An app that allows you to keep root?
Chances are if your prompted to accept and OTA you'll have to revert to stock, and you'd need terminal inputs to change code to keep SU and root. Apps can be overwritten, and most OTA's contain patches to override previous root exploits.
TL-DR: Don't accept OTA's, unless it's been proven to be rootable (unless you wanna be like all those Bionic users who took the last OTA, and lost root) LOL

My friend apps do work for keeping root. The 5.7.894 leaked update patches the root exploit. I used OTA Root Keeper and it worked flawlessly.

The only way the app would be rendered useless is if you formatted the system partition to install a new ROM (OTA Root Keeper installs a copy of SU to /system)

help lost root many questions

ok very new to rooting just rooted 2 days ago on 893 now installed update to 902 lost root...but here is my concern my phone grants super user but cant gain root access and i didnt unfreeze bloat and the update was still successfull now i cant even access titatium to unfreeze cause root cant be established so i dont understand how i can partially be rooted and just to mention as far as i can tell there are no known problems with the phone anywhere else but what should i do to get root back or is it just a simple configuration problem thanks
There's an exploit available that will root the .902 update -- Motofail. It says Droid 4 but it works with the Bionic, RAZR and Droid 3 as well.
what are the risks im pretty new and dont wanna do something i dont fully understand or that i might regret later..and how did the update complete without unfreezing bloat and where is it now.lol i guess im asking does it matter i just wanna get it right
It's pretty straightforward, basically a one-click root method.
As far as the update, it depends on which specific apps you had frozen. Apparently the ones you froze were not on the list of apps the update checks for.
i can pm you instructions on step by step instructions to root from stock to 902 root if you like someone helped me today about to do it myself here in about 5 minutes
ok thanks for the input i did motofail and it worked back in root now does anyone know of an app to overclock without changing rom

Rooting question's please assist...

So I've had my d4 since the release date. I have only rooted two phones no roms nothing special. I read the posts on this form just about every day been through just about all of them. I just want a simple root to remove all the junk. If I use the d4 utility to root will safe strap be installed? After root can I still get the OTA updates with out doing anything special, or something simple like a mere unroot that is in the utility? In the event that I need to send it in will the steps listed in another post suffice? Please assist I really want to root, but I love this phone and have never paid so much for any phone...
Sent from my DROID4 using XDA
nah, you dont have to do anything special
i used the motofail to root, and froze all the bloatware with root uninstaller
when the time came i unfroze everything, unrooted, installed the 219 patch
and re-rooted
Definitely freeze apps instead of deleting them. Otherwise an OTA update will fail. Also, use Voodoo OTA Root Keeper to preserve root access after an update. While I believe current exploits work on the latest update, there's no guarantee they will continue to work with future updates.

[Q] ICS vs JB, should I OTA? root post OTA

Hi all,
Just got the A.HD. still stock ICS.
I've been reading many threads and Google searches since, and have a couple of questions....
I would like to get answers from people who have had this phone for a while and rooted and/or done the OTA update.
I've read several conflicting user reports about the JB OTA update.
Is there any real performance gain? I've read articles showing JB boots faster than IcS and has a better overall feel.
The only solid thing I've read to make me want to do it is the ability to resize widgets in JB.
I've used JB ROMs on my captivate glide and Acer a500 and didn't care for them; but idk if they were just buggy ROMs or what (never used stock JB)
1) so who would recommend the JB OTA update and why?
2) does the motofail2go root method work after the JB OTA update? If not, what does work to root the official JB?
Again, I've read conflicting reports and would like to hear from folks that have done it.
Thanks!
-Eric
Motofail will not work on JB.
Root ICS, then you have to do some things to backup root with voodoo root keeper and what not, then install jb then restore root.
Do it carefully I am now without root on JB because I didnt know what I was doing.
To answer your other question, I think JB is worth it but meh up to you.
i kept mine on ics because the webtop feature.....
i modify a cheap atrix 1 lapdok 100 and when im away i use and love it...
of course root it to get ride of the att junk and installed safestrap recovery to install other roms....
i will start shacking about update to JB when custom kernel can be flashed to the phone but who knows when is going to happen
Backup your root on ICS and update to jb. I love having the latest and greatest and jellybean is definitely another and has some nice features that I couldn't go without now. Just my opinion

I reccomend updating to JB. I have JB and root and I couldnt imagine going back to ICS.
If you do decide to update, just be sure that you:
1) Root ICS first using motofail.
2) Open Superuser, scroll left to the info tab, select su binary, select update, exit when it finishes.
3) Next, install OTA Rootkeeper from the Play Store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
4) Open OTA Rootkeeper and select backup su.
5) When it's finished select temp un-root, restore root, temp un-root, restore root. (I reccomend doing it twice as stated just to be safe.)
[IMPORTANT: Don't forget to update su binaries and don't forget to temp un-root and restore root. Do NOT update while temp un-rooted. Can't stress enough.]
6) Go into settings and download/install the JB update.
7) Once booted up and running JB, open OTA Rootkeeper (if it isn't still installed just re-install it) and select the first option. Something along the lines of restore su backup.
8) Once it is finished restoring root, if anything still shows up unchecked, exit the app and re-open it. Now it should all be checked. (At least that's how mine worked out.)
9) Download Root Checker or open an app that requires su to make sure you're rooted.
10) Enjoy rooted JB.

Thanx for the responses
one more q:
does anyone notice battery probs on JB.
on other two devices, JB custom rom was awful on battery... (again, dont know if they were buggy ROMs/kernels or what)
thanx again
I stayed on ICS. It seems a few things got removed on JB. I had started a list.
Do the battery mod man. Then you won't have to worry about bad battery life.
