Hey everybody,
Ok so I got this captivate....rooted using super-one-click...used a file explorer to replace 3e with 2e recovery....and even used odin for a thing or two...successfully flashed cognition...thought I was hot stuff...flashed fasty rom...phone never made it past first boot. Stuck at ATT Boot screen...can't get into download mode or recovery mode no matter what combo of buttons I use or when I take out and put in the battery...kies won't recognize my device because it technically hasnt booted...same thing with odin...no download mode. The phone isn't even bricked....does anyone know of anything that might help that I havent tried?
you have tried taking the battery out, putting it back in, holding both volume buttons while the phone is still off, and plugging the phone into the pc with the volume buttons still held right?
Captivate Stuck After Flashing Fasty
yes but I just downloaded the sdk....was messing around with the ADB...I don't know exactly what I did....got the phone to download mode 1 time... odin wasn't up so I've been trying to do it again with no luck...adb reboot-bootloader? adb usb? Does anyone know what they are doing on the SDK?

i recently flashed my samsung captivate with i9000 froyo jp3 firmware, with the i9000 pda and csc with odin..everything was working fine except obviously sound bug and no home button, but i restarted it today and it wont get past the galaxy s screen and then goes black and randomly vibrates. was unable to enter download mode, im holding volume up and down together and then plug in usb but it wont go to download mode and just brings up battery charging screen, since this is only way to get to download mode to flash back since i cant boot up the device completely to run usb mass storage to run adb....any ideas or anything im doing wrong to get into download mode? or is my captivate now bricked? i was gonna try deleting user data but i dont want to enter recovery mode cause its running i9000 firmware so i wouldnt be able to select anything or is there another way that im not thinking of?
okay got it into download mode, since its i9000 firmware i had to hold down power+volume down to enter download mode.
also im running on jf6 rom and market doesnt seem to working all the time, and sometimes in the notification bar it pops up with random downloads from the market but they say download unsuccessful, but i never clicked any of them to start downloading, anyone have that happen to them before....this phone has been great but lately ive noticed alot of software problems with it especially from the android market, is this typical of the captivate or should i think about a warranty replacement?
okay so heres whats happened in total
i have a rogers captivate...flashed it to cognition rom
LOVED IT
3 button worked, everything worked i was loving life...
then i decided hey lets go to cognition 2.2 so i used odin to get back to JF6 or stock whatever...and i accidentally removed the usb so it soft bricked
i fixed it using the resistor jig and got it back into download to flash with odin
now heres the weird part...im about to root it and put on clockwork, but my 3 button combo ain't working!!! it used to perfectly now its not!!?!?
so its not that my phone doesn't do it...its just that it wont..
i try it and the att logo just keeps flashing no matter how long i hold down all 3 buttons, or let go of power after the 2nd flash or anyhting NOTHING WORKS...then i read to plug it into the computer, wait till you see that battery symbol, and try...NOPE doens't work...then i thought oaky ill just reflash it with odin...
I CAN"T GET IT INTO DOWNLOAD MODE ANYMORE by holding both volumes and plugging it into the pc...the drivers are all there, everything...
this phone is starting to piss me off now...
anyone got an idea before i throw it out the window?
use z4root for rooting your phone

odin jf6 with 3 button fix
So, I went to install gingerbread on my captivate, ripped from the nexus s, but I accidentally flashed the wrong thing. now my phone turns on to the att logo, then it goes away, then about 20 seconds later it comes back. I have been looking for hours on how to get to download mode, and I think that somehow I crippled my chances of using the 3 button combo. I know how to use abd to get to download mode, and my computer shows that my phone is connected when I plug it in at the att logo, but, my PC thinks its a nexus s and it can't find drivers for it. I updated my SDK but it still wont find drivers. is there anyway to install nexus s drivers or to get my phone into download mode without a jig?
Just take the battery out and plug in usb cable while holding volume up and down. (I had the same problem until someone suggested this)
that didn't do anything. if it matters, my phone wont even get to the battery charging screen with the usb cable plugged in, the spinning circle thing comes up for about 2 seconds, goes away, then comes back but its frozen the whole time, nothing else happens. My PC still sees that its plugged in, but, like I said, it thinks its a nexus s, and wont install drivers :/
PS: as to exactly what happened, I forgot to do the voodoo lagfix before trying to install the gingerbread dump from the nexus s, so I got into download mode and went back to 2.1. it was right after that when I realized that my three button combo wasnt working, so I was going to fix that by updating the bootloader, but accidentally loaded nsongs.tar instead of the tar that would fix my download mode combo, so in Odin, I had phone bootloader update checked when I flashed that

i had a successful install.....but my problem came when trying to revert to stock.
PC wouldn't recognize device and for the first time ever i couldn't get into download mode using method above or a 3 button method that worked for me (a slight variation to method stated above).
Finally the following worked:
1. open odin 1-click JF6
2. remove battery (and any external sd) from phone
3. plug phone into pc via USB (without battery in phone)
4. Hold Vol + / - toggle down simultaneously.
5. While holding the buttons down insert the battery. When i did this my phone entered DL mode almost immediately and i was able to use odin to get back to stock.
build 1007
I'd try the above method to get into DL mode.. if that doesn't work you can try the JIG and see if that works.
But a requirement before flashing was to verify that your buttons worked on your phone.
the buttons were working, but I didn't have a lagfix installed. I flashed back to stock and noticed that my buttons weren't working after that. I went to fix them but flashed nsongs.tar by accident, and I had the "phone bootloader update" box checked, so I'm thinking thats why my buttons aren't working now. I've tried that method above a couple times and nothings happened...
Hmm.. you can try and update using the Nexus S USB drivers.. if they are different from ours that is .. go to that forum and poke around to look for them.
At this point.. can't hurt trying anything.
Where would I find the nexus s drivers? I installed the samsung mobile phone drivers, but my computer still says "found new hardware - nexus s" anytime I plug in, and it shows up in device manager with a big yellow question mark.

same as the poster
when i did my install my buttons were working as well....i have the 1007 build and never had any problem getting to recovery or dl using 2-button and 3-button combo's.
After the gingerbread flash was a different story though. Luckily for me the method i posted almost like jumpstarted me into DL mode....when i did that it went into DL faster than it ever had with the normal methods....the DL screen popped up almost the instant the battery connectors hit.
yea, none of the methods I've found have gotten me into download mode. Is there anyway to get the nexus s drivers so I can do this through adb? I don't have a car so getting to radioshack to buy resistors is kinda hard :/
ok, so I updated my sdk again and it now I have the drivers installed, I can use adb now, but whenever I do, adb reboot download, it reboots, but not to download mode, i goes right back to the boot loop. I was wondering if there was anyway to push a new bootloader onto my cappy using adb. that would be awesome
So, the phone worked well with CM9 for a while. Then the guy that owned the device attempted to update it, I'm not sure what went wrong but the fact of the matter is that it kept bootlooping on the CM9 splash screen. Entering into recovery was unresponsive and doing the three button combo to enter into Download Mode was unresponsive.
I followed a guide on here on how to make on my own jig. I successfully made the jig and I am able to enter into Download mode now. However, I am unsure what to do from here. I attempted to use Odin and flash a Corn kernel for the captivate, thinking I'd be able to boot into recovery and then flash a rom from that point. Unfortunately, I am unable to do this. Nothing boots up except the ATT screen now. Maybe there is a failsafe way in getting the phone back to working order?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Have you tried pulling the battery, holding down both volume buttons, and plugging the USB cable in to enter download mode? Once there, try flashing it back to the original state with Odin One-Click or similar. I have bricked and unbricked my phone at least twice, and each time was able to get it to recover by using this method. Hope it works for you. Good luck!
Thanks, it worked. I think I'm on Froyo now, but at least its working. I originally downloaded Odin-one Click but didn't recognize the interface. Thanks!
Ok, so I hard bricked my Captivate, used the Radioshack homemade jig to force it into download mode, and flashed Gingerbread 2.3.6 XXJVU. After further research, I realized I wanted to downgrade to 2.3 for a more effective custom ROM flash, so I flashed a stock Eclair 2.1 ROM using Odin one click (with bootloaders, I'm assuming). The flash was successful as far as Odin was concerned, but now the phone gets stuck in a boot loop for quite some time. If I let the loop run its course, it will eventually load the 2.1 ROM, but the phone will power off after about 5 seconds after I plug either a USB cable OR a charger (the charger is recognized as a USB cord by the phone). I cannot get the phone into recovery or download mode; the 10 plus button combinations do not work, and the jig sends it into the boot loop. I even tried holding the volume down key through the entire boot loop sequence, but it never stops (as opposed to not holding the volume down key, where it boots eventually). I tried reformatting the internal SD card, and I looked into putting it into download mode through ADB, but I do not have it installed and even if I did, I can't get the phone to stay on while connected via USB. The computer even recognizes it through USB until the phone shuts off. Through much research, I've come to the conclusion that I must re-brick my phone somehow from within the stock ROM I have installed. I have no idea if this is even possible or if it's the right solution, but I'm at the end of the line at this point. Any suggestions to help with this?

No such thing as "more effective custom ROM flash". All you need is stock GB with GB bootloaders.
You need to get to Download mode and flash stock GB. Tons of information in this forum, please read it.
I've been browsing these forums for days for information on this subject, and none of the solutions I've found fix my problem.
And where exactly did you read you need to downgrade 2.3.x to 2.1 in order to flash a custom ROM?
Calm down, turn the phone off and leave it on a charger for few hours in order to recharge the battery. Disconnect the charger, remove the battery, remove SIM and SD. Reinstall battery only, hold both volume keys and plug the phone to the PC. See Download mode now?
I didn't read that I needed to downgrade, but the guides I was reading were one click solutions for root and flash for 2.3, and I guess should've ignored them and done it manually. I did a one click on a #1110 phone, which is why it's now acting lame, I assume.
Ha, I am pretty calm. I have a Verizon Galaxy S that I've been using to charge the battery, since my AT&T Captivate won't even charge the battery via USB or straight charger when it's off, so it's pretty full. I've tried every method, including the one you just mentioned, and none of them work to bring me to download mode.

I've had that thread open in my browser for the past 2 days, and have tried everything it suggests multiple times.

Have ya tried to make a Jig ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9238587&postcount=1
The jig I used to get it from fully bricked state into download mode would put it back into the boot loop. I solved my problem with the adb reboot download command. I managed to activate the command before the phone randomly shut off, as it does when I insert the USB cable. Thanks everyone!
