Hi Guys,
Hope this is the right forum to post this in. Says requests go in 'general', so here goes:
Over the last few days I have scoured the internet as well as XDA for a root on the LTE version from AT&T, branded SGH-i957. I have come across multiple people as well across multiple threads who have also expressed interest. The purpose of this thread is to concentrate work on this in one location separately since rooting and ROM development seem nonexistent at the moment. Also, I am willing to donate to any developer who can help us out. If other people are also willing, we can start a running total to give some motivation.
I have experience rooting and flashing multiple devices, but I am lacking in developmental skills, but I am willing to try if any developer for the wifi version has ideas but no device to try it on. From my limited knowledge, I believe you need to start with a rooted device to pull the ROM Dump from the device to start development.
Root Status:
ROOTED! (Thanks Da_G)
Da_G said:
Here's an odin tar I put together to root the AT&T Galaxy Tab 8.9, along with a tar that contains the stock kernel.
You can return back to stock kernel immediately after flashing, or keep mine loaded up, works great either way.
Changes in this kernel:
ADB Insecure (gives you # root prompt at adb instead of $)
su, busybox added to ramdisk
script to install busybox and su at boot-up
init.d support for running init.d scripts at bootup
stock android bootanimation (so you can run custom boot anims)
Modded Kernel: http://ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/sgh-i957-rooted-kernel-v2.tar
Stock Kernel: http://ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/stock-kernel-odin-image-for-sgh-i957.tar
Open odin, put desired kernel .tar in PDA section, flash.
Install Superuser from market.
Done!
Don't have a device, so no overclocked kernel coming from me just yet, if I can get my hands on one expect it soon!

ROM Development:
N/A
Disclaimer: Not responsible for any bricked devices.
The 8.9 already had a weak support time. One ROM and one kernel. Then the ATT version comes out with a DIFFERENT SoC.
I agree. Please also looking to Bell Canada's version as well if possible... I am receiving it tomorrow...
Thanks for Posting this.
I will also donate 30 dollars .
I believe that 8.9 lte is the best tablet out there considering its low weight
I also am willing to assist in development although I have little if any experience this would be a good reason to get cracking on learning that stuff as I don't see anyone rushing to help us out. If there is a device willing to give it some work I also would pony up $50. 00 US greenback to the cause.
Currently Skyrocketing into Android Space!
You guys are so lucky. Canada doesn't get the free GSII-SR. I paid full price for my 8.9LTE ($650CAD!!+tax no less).
The whole reason I bought this even over the mythical 7.7 is because of the LTE chip and supposingly faster speed (I hope... 1.5GHz vs 1.2GHz). So at this point this is the fastest tablet aside from the Prime and should warrant more attention.
Sorry to get off topic a little, but does an launcher app like Go Launcher totally replaces Touchwiz?
Is it running as an APP?
What happens to Touchwiz when Go Launcher is active?
Esstenially does it slow my tablet down?
Thanks
Send a PM to XDA member toastcfh. He or someone on his team may be able to help you guys out. I have heard that root isn't possible, but I have no idea what that means. Did they lock the bootloader? AT&T is involved, so I am not surprised they locked things down...
Thanks motley. I will contact him and let you guys know what's happening.

Don't everyone send him a PM, dont want to flood his inbox.
I dont think the bootloader is locked. I think it is just an issue of this acting like a honeycomb cellphone.

Problem is, the VZW LTE 10.1 unit is still using the same Tegra SoC as the WiFi and 3G versions.
The AT&T/Bell Tab 8.9 is using a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC (same as the GS2 Skyrocket, T-Mobile GS2). And the Skyrocket/T-Mobile GS2 roots won't work because the phones using this SoC are all running Gingerbread, not Honeycomb.

This should be the firmware for the Galaxy Tablet 8.9 LTE
Link: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=SGH-I957&r=5
note: it is labeled as smartphone and not tablet, but the PDA matches mine exactly.
I'm still working on this. Sending out pm's to devs who have rooted similar devices.

What's scary is that the HTC Jetstream hasn't been rooted yet either, and it's been out for months. It uses the same SoC as the 8.9 LTE.
I'm sure the stupid high price didn't help the Jetstream though. Just not a lot of them ending up in the hands of the dev-minded.
What's encouraging, at least, is the BOGO deal on the 8.9 LTE/Skyrocket seems to be moving a fair number of Tabs in the US, which could lead to more dev support.

Yikes. Their bounty is $920 along with a free device, and still no one has done it. They do have a few devs actively looking into it though.

Keep us posted Orlando I for one would love to be able to root this and hopefully make it better than it currently is which suckyyyy!
I want to enable tethering from the 8.9. It seems att has removed this feature. I want to root to enable this functionality and I'm willing to pitch in as well. Unless someone has an app that works on honeycomb.

I am talking to DA_G who makes skyrocket kernels, as well as the guys at the jetstream rooting forum so we will see how far we get...
main issue is just finding a root exploit for honeycomb.
Hi Guys,
Status update. Have some good work going on with Da_G. Will need some brave people shortly.
The Touchpad has been great, but I am seriously considering Nexus 7. Currently, I own a galaxy nexus with Jelly Bean installed and it is faster than any iOS product I have used to date.. I have heard that Gamestop is doing trade ins for n7 with a 30% bonus. Has anyone else done this, and what'd you get for it? Touchpad seems to be getting left in the dark more recently in terms of developing. I would love to see this running CM10, but I feel like things aren't going to get too much better, once again, in terms of updates, even if CM10 does finally get ported. What's your insight? Please keep your temper/judgement under control. I know some people can be over the top judgmental/biased when it comes to these type of questions. I just want opinions not judgements on my statements. Thank you for your opinions/answers!

if you check out the development thread, JCSullens already has a teaser out showing a touchpad running JB. If you are tired of the touchpad at this point, move on. I, for one, have found the touchpad to be a great device with a huge number of folks working hard to improve it. There are a number of newer tablets out there with more features and faster hardware and if you need those features then a change should be in your future. For the cash I spent on my 2 touchpads, I do not see a downside. I have a 32 gig dual boot tablet that does everything I need for a fraction of the cost of the newer hardware out there. A 7 inch tablet would not work for me and 16 gig is not enough storage for my files but everyone has different needs.
You should evaluate your needs for a device and do what seems best for your situation but remember that there are many folks out here who would love to have your touchpad should you decide to get rid of it. Just sayin..........

the nexus 4 is a great device, and im sure the Galaxy S4 will be nice also.
I realize this is a Nexus 4 forum, but my question is this; is the s4 a worthy upgrade from the nexus 4?
please shout off below, and I will give thanks to those who deserve it.
and there is a poll up top

that device is also pretty slick (maybe) so also give opinions on that phone too maybe?

By the time S4 becomes available the N4 will be over 6months+ old; this is a long time in phone tech these days.
For me the performance improvement isn't enough considering the time gap; just wait another few months for the real next gen.
Just ask yourself one question. Can you live without timely updates? Also, cyanogenmod devs are not going to be buying the s4. If I can find the source I will post it.

I feel you may be right, the s4 specs are good BUT there not anything spectacular. if anything its a minor update (in my opinion) to the S3.

ya i read that the other day on google currents (I have android central, android police, cult of android, and a few others on my feed)
Its a shame, but these companies noot to make unlocked bootloaders and easy to root, rom and flash
I dont do rooting or anything, but i understand the frustration from all you rooters...as I was with my verizon galaxy nexus
I haven't even rooted my n4. I've never been happier with a device.

if you like buggy stock ROM´s, even more buggier custom ROM´s, missing source code, no original development ... go for the S4
I´ll stick to my N4

Agreed it's not worth it at all, I had the S3 and I am never going back to plastic. The only thing I would get is the One, and that's if it gets S-OFFed. Honestly, I am 100% happy with this phone, I'll wait for the next nexus before I even consider anything else.

Honestly I my self am not impressed with the new changes to the s4(meaning most of the "new" features could have been a software update on the s3). I've owned the entire galaxy line accept the note family and just switched to a nexus 4. Samsungs got a lot of bug issue within there phones as well as hardware issues Samsung has really began to become the iPhone of the android world honestly I would wait to see what Google has in the works in there upcoming press conference before making any decisions then you have the three to choose from being the HTC one s4 and maybe a Nexus 5. Coming from a previous Samsung user and the experience I've had with there products I would not go back and for me personally as well nothing beats stock android and always getting an update weather your phone is 2 years old or 2 months old. Well that's my 2 cents take it or leave it and have a blessed day.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Samsung needs to stop trying to re-invent the wheel. They are are adding too much crap to the phones in the form of Samsung made social media crap, media players and other proprietary software.
If they don't add clean simple features then people will lose interest. When I bought my S3 I was fumbling around trying to find out how most of the new features worked, only to find it cumbersome and counter-intuitive. What good are features if you never use them?

Been looking into this phone and it seems like it has some pretty impressive specs for the price. Also comes with ICS with a possible Jelly Bean update on the way. Have any of you looked into buying one? It doesn't have the most impressive development right now but with ICS and a dual core processor you might not need a custom rom if you just use stock apps such as Nova launcher. I have heard it is also really fast. Thoughts?

I would say no, you can get root but boot loader is locked and it looks like that it will never be unlocked, plus few/any kernel sources. Never trust they will bring jb. So wait for moto x phone I hear that's gonna be 200 and that much better of a deal. If you choose to get the l9 go in expecting to run the same software for the next 2 years. Not appetizing IMO

Yeah, I agree. X phone is supposed to similar to the Nexus 4 in terms of bang for buck and is also supposedly able to be customized to your liking similar to computers.
No development support on XDA means I won't buy the phone, period. I did some checking a month ago and there are no custom ROMs here or anything else. Guess I've been spoiled by the devs we have for this phone.
Yeah think I decided to wait until the X phone or until I find a cheap GS2 I can pick up or something.
I considered this one, but decided against it. The lack of custom development and having to cut down or activate a new SIM were the main reasons. I think my next one will be a Nexus phone of some type.

If you look in the original android development forum they have a almost fully working cm10.1 and cm9 for the U.S. T-Mobile version. Only bug is that 1080p video recording doesn't work.

Only CM10.1 (and it is a mostly functional, with active development) ROM. That CM9 post is a fake. Anyway, the point is, there is some development with that phone.
Also I brought an L9 a couple months back, before TMO goes contract-less as a PREPAID, which is cheaper than it is now. :highfive:

No problem. It is still difficult to unlock the bootloader for L9, as it is a lengthy process. But it is possible, and people have been (after unlock the bootloader) make CM10.1 working on that phone. So in conclusion, I think we can say L9 is not XDA friendly, but still can be made to use custom ROMs. And things looks good as more people are coming to this phone and find new ways to customize it.
I remember when this phone came out a year ago, there really wasnt much development for the phone. Mostly just modded stock roms thanks to jocala. When I bought this phone as a backup/mp3 player I was utterly surprised at how much it has grown. The exhibit has almost just as much roms as the gs3/N2 minus the 4.1 touchwiz roms the exhibit has it all...
Point is that who knows the fact that this phone is cheap it may pick up

I just wish I could spend $360 on a phone and not miss it! Anyway as hard as it is to believe the Exhibit is running so good right now thanks to Exit_Only and Team Insomnia that a new phone won't be necessary for a while. Least for me. Ironic that it survived this long as I nearly got ready to smash it so many times in frustration over the last year. We've come a LONG way from the days of the Xquizit and CM9 ROMs.

How's the camera and screen dpi? I like taking photos with my phone but have heard the camera isn't the best on the L9. I am considering either purchasing an L9, picking up a used Blaze 4G, or waiting till they clear inventory of the 8gb N4. The blaze is nice but I like the screen size of the L9.

Hey guys I am currently looking into buying another device to use on my service. Does any one have any good suggestions on alternate devices? If so which ones and why? I am only starting this discussion to get advice from an experienced group of like minded people. I am currently bouncing back and forth on looking for a good used device to root and play with as well or get a newer one and leave stock for personal use. What are your guys thoughts on that? Also curious on smart watches or something with a stylus for work, I take a lot of notes and draw a lot of rough schematics for work and I think that would be handy to have. I have had and used HTC since the HD and I have always liked them. I had a samsung Mega for awhile and loved the screen on that but samsung sucks for software so I don't think I will ever have a stock samsung again. Again just trying to start a discussion on this.
The Nexus 6 is great, it has a huge screen and good front speakers like the m8... It's also pure Android
