On KK5 here. Excellent battery life ^_^ (can usually go a full day, ~9 hours, with heavy usage with no problem)

How to flash a kernel?

1. Download & install kies
2. close kies
3. download odin3
4. download the kernel
5. open odin
6. press: "PDA" and select the kernel.tar.gz
7. boot your phone into downloadmode (press and hold "home", "volume down" & "power on" buttons)
8. connect your phone to the pc
9. go to odin and press "start"
10. wait...

So..the best kernel is...?

There is no best kernel unless we are talking about customed ones. Basically all stock kernels perform about the same and usually it is the baseband or modem that makes the difference in draining batteries as those are tweaked for the region that you are in.

Dont use this method or u will loose warranty, refer chainfire's thread to properly flash kernel without increasing the binary counter.

Im Sorry I gave you a bad advice.this is the way I found on google and flashed my mobile yesterday.I hope I didn't ruin your and my warranty :/

Na I'm good, I'm just now reading the replies. The problem for me was that apparently there are different methods and not all devs are explaining them in their threads. Maybe its an idea to create a FAQ thread in the rom dev thread?

Do the following and after that root your phone using cf root xxjw4 kernel from Odin. Check in cf root for galaxy gti9000 thread .

Maybe its a bootloop maybe.Switch off your phone and check if download and recovery mode is available(see next paragraph)
If so follow the steps mentioned.
First of all download xxjw4 firmware for galaxy gt-I9000 from
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/150483619/708026d/I9000XXJW4_I9000OXAJW4_XEU.zip.html
1) Put your phone into Recovery mode (Vol up + Home + Power button) and perform a Wipe data/Factory reset, then a Wipe cache. When done pull the battery out for around ten seconds then re-insert.
(If recovery isn't working ignore this step)
2) Put the phone into Download mode (Vol down + Home + Power button)
3) Unzip the JW4 firmware folder you've downloaded to your Desktop.
4) Launch Odin and click on the button that says PDA and navigate to the PDA file you've just unzipped to your desktop and select it.
5) Connect your phone to your PC via USB. Odin will say Added and a box will turn yellow to indicate it has recognised your phone.
6) Click the start button in Odin and sit back and wait for Odin to flash your phone. When it's finished it will take a few minutes longer for the phone to reboot than is usual so please don't panic. The phone will reboot.
7) When the phone has rebooted, remove the USB cable and you now have the latest 2.3.6. It might be a good idea to repeat step 1 to make sure nothing of the old firmware is left behind.
And that's it, seven steps to 2.3.6 JW4 Value Pack and TouchWiz 4.

First of all I feel your pain. If your issue hasn't been solved by the above post I would recommend these two step by step guides to fixing your issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494493
I have personally used the above process without a problem, best of all it includes all the files you need to not only get back to stock but also to then get you back to ICS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139050 This process I haven't used but a cursory search pulled it up. The first link is better and I can vouch for it but variety is the spice of life..
Hope this helps.

still i tried what you said with the odin and it doesnt work
the phone wasn't root before and had a stock from the operator
If its a boot loop try this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984140
If not download the files from sammobile (2.3.6 xxjw4) put the .tar file in the PDA and 512 pit file in the pit section make sure the repartition is ticked then if it still in a boot loop search for the cfs root and flash that then get the file off the thread I gave you then flash that to the phone as instructed on the thread then your phone should work edit* you need to put your phone into download mode before plugging in and flashing

yeah i know the basics ! but stil it doesnt work ! can it be a hardware problem? and if it right how can i fix it ?
Did you try that method? And when did it start turning off, did you try mpding it or did it just start doing it? Does it he a knock when it turns off or is it at the same place everytime? If it stays turned on in download mode its probably software related also make sure the drivers are installed using kies

Does Odin recognize your phone (com12 or something like that in yellow)
If not then try different USB port or also different cable and computer.
According to my experience if you are able to go to download mode then there is always a way to fix the problem

step by step downgrading to GB 2.3.6

hi
kindly i need a step by step to downgrade from 4.0.3 rooted to gingerbread 2.3.6
i i use pc odin like i upgrade do i brick the phone?
thank you
Using PC Odin is ok, gingerbread kernels do not have the brickbug.

Why are you posting a question in the Development section? What you need to follow is Dr. Ketan's guide. If you are running ICS and downgrade to GB, you will have force closes the first time you boot. Then do the wipe, not in ICS

First of all wrong section to ask question...should post such query in general section...
Yes make back up with Titanium Backup to save your apps...do not factory reset while on unsafe kernel (ICS kernel is unsafe kernel)..
Download any safe kernel and install and do factory wipe...then install Stock GB ROM..root it and enjoy...

Safe kernel for ics and gb = speedmod kernel.
1.Download pre rooted gb rom.
2. Use pc odin to flash the pre rooted rom.
3.The phone will keep fc while 1st boot. Dont panic. Switch off the phone completely and boot into recovery mode and wipe data+ cache.
4. After phone booted, install mobile odin and flash safe kernel.
5. Done, your gb rom now fully rooted.
Good luck.

If flashed GB already using PC odin, its already safe.. there is no need to change kernel. GB kernels are safe. ICS, not so much

You can directly flash gb rom using pc odin
Dont do any wipes on ics..flash gb rom and then do the wipes
No other kernel is required to be flashed
sir,

you'll find all the stock ROMs and the instructions in the link above.
STEP BY STEP instructions
[ the mobile and PC should be connected only when instructed in the process below ]
PC :
>> download the PC Odin3v1.87
>> download the ROM from the link above or from "samfirmware" [ http://samfirmware.com ]
(click on 'firmwares and files', scroll down the page, select 'smartphone' in the type list, 'android' in the OS list, 'GT-N7000 - Galaxy Note' in the model list, ' **** your country **** ' in the country list. Click on the 'send' button. All the firmwares released for your model will be listed, download the one you want to install. It will ask you to register to the site first, don't worry it is free)
>> you will download a file "N7000xxXXX_N7000xxxXXX_XXX.rar" (there will be numbers and alphabets instead of x and X). RAR is a compressed format, to unRAR the actual file/folder (which you need) you will need a program called 'WinRAR', look it up on google or download it from [ http://www.filehippo.com ]
>> you will get "N7000xxXXX_N7000xxxXXX_N7000xxXXX_HOME.tar.md5" and "SS_DL.dll" when you'll unRAR.
>> open the Odin program on your computer (if you are on windows vista or windows 7 right click on the "Odin3 v1.85.exe" and then click on "run as administrator" option, click on the "yes" option. the program will open). now click on the 'PDA' button (in the Odin program) and then point the location at/select the "N7000xxXXX_N7000xxxXXX_N7000xxXXX_HOME.tar.md5" file.
MOBILE :
>> press/hold down the volume 'down' button, don't release the volume 'down' button, press/hold down the 'home' button (in the front), and press and hold down the 'power' button until your device restarts, don't let go of the three buttons until you see the "Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000" screen. (release the three button when you see "Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000" on the screen)
>> press the volume 'up' button to continue.
>> connect the data cable to the PC[USB] and the mobile[MicroUSB]
PC :
>> you'll see a yellow box under ID:COM with "COMx" written in it. (x is a number)
>> now click the big "START" button (in the Odin program)
wait for the process to be over, and your mobile will reboot itself.
MOBILE :
>> press/hold down the volume 'up' button, don't release the volume 'up' button, press/hold down the 'home' button (in the front), and press and hold down the 'power' button until your device restarts, don't let go of the three buttons until you see the "Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000" screen. (release the three button when you see "Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000" on the screen)
>> press the volume 'down' button to get to "wipe data/factory reset" and press the 'power' button (it might be the 'home' button read the instruction on the mobile screen.. on top)
>> press the volume 'down' button to get to "wipe cache partition" and press the 'power' button (it might be the 'home' button read the instruction on the mobile screen.. on top)

Hey,
So, I'll try make this easy and simple, hahaha.
1.) Download Odin and any stock 2.3.6 rom from sammobile.com. Unzip the file, you should get a single .tar file. Also download a file called dbsdata.rfs.tar
2.) Turn the phone off and put the phone into download mode using the three button combo- Vol. Down, Home and Power.
3.) Connect the phone using USB. Odin should recognise your device- it should say in one of the little boxes up top "COM:ID" with a yellow box.
4.) Select the PDA option. Navigate to where the first .tar file is, the one you downloaded from sammobile.com. Select it. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE AFTER. Once you've got that, select Start.
5.) Now you'll end up in a bootloop. Don't panic here- its because of how the data in 4.x and 2.3.6 are set up. This is where dbsdata.rfs.tar comes in. Pull the battery and reinsert it. Go back into download mode.
6.) Again under the PDA option, select dbsdata.rfs.tar. Let it flash in.
Done! You should boot back up properly into GB 2.3.6
Hope I helped

[Q] i think i broke it :(

i have a samsung galaxy s2 mini. was trying to get a new rom on it and when i finished it the rom was cought up in a boot loop.
then i tried using odin to put a new cwm on it and maybe start a new instalation, but now all i get is the samsung welcome screen and it keeps reseting cant enter cwm anymore. i can still use download mode.
is there any way i can put any rom on it and just make the phone usable?
if you can still get into download mod run ODIN, connect phone to computer and flash CWM or a custom rom though ODIN... simple
i tried doing that. maybe i did something wrong in wich part of odin do i put the rom? (bootloader, pda, phone, csc) do i have to check some of the options like repartition?
