After reading this article I think I will submit a complaint to the FCC. Worse case scenario I waste a little time. If enough people do this who knows.....
Interesting read. Sounds like they might not be able to stop you from tethering, too. Or wiping the bloat from your device. Am I reading too much into it?
I know the Bionic is 1st and last Moto device if HTC is unlocked and Moto remains locked.
good luck. i already submitted a complaint to the FCC about it a few months back(a long with a bunch of other people). all that ever happened was received a call from Verizon with some b.s. 'we'll be looking into the matter" and nothing ever happened. apparently, something to do with their "zoning" allows them to get away with it.
There was an article a while back which explained why Verizon could do it. The locked boot loader has NOTHING to do with "unlocked"(they are talking about the sum locking) in definition. Also the Boot loader falls under security which Verizon CAN prove an unlocked boot loader CAN cause a security concern towards their network would be allowed to block it.
I forget where I saw it. I believe I read it on Droid Life when they broke down the BLOCK C rules.

How can you justify it is for security concerns when you ship other phones with unlocked boot loaders? HTC releases the unlock tools for their phones because they have become less dangerous all of a sudden?

As I said If Verizon can prove it can have an adverse effect to the network they can block whatever they want. An unlocked boot loader for example could allow software beyond the means to hurt the network. If Verizon proves that then they can block it...

I know HTC just announced that they will unlock the thunderbolt too (http://www.droid-life.com/2011/12/3...-bootloader-unlock-treatment-from-htcdev-com/) if they can do it on an already released phone and a 4g phone for that matter then what is moto's problem
Related
Motorola has listened to the voice of it's consumers!
They stated they were going to implement lockable/unlockable bootloaders into their phones. Basically the same technology that's in the Xoom.
That could be one of the reasons the Bionic has been delayed til this Summer. If that's what it is, then the Bionic will be the "IT" phone for Verizon. That's going to set the benchmark pretty high. Motorola won't be on my **** list anymore lol

Honestly I couldn't care less if its locked or not. I agree, lock the thing it makes carriers feel good about themselves. Just don't encrypt it or make it so it can't be unlocked.

I know Sprint doesn't care because I turned my EVO 4G for a 150 dollar credit towards the EVO 3D and my phone was rooted, custom ROM installed and custom kernel and they said nothing.. I rooted and installed a custom ROM on a Droid X for a friend and they returned it because they didn't like it and Verizon would not take it. Sprint is cool with their customers doing what they want with their phones, I have no idea how t-mobile feels...

Locked up
If the D3 is any indicator, it will be locked just as the D3 is.
they always lock the phone
yeap it is locked... at least it is rooted..
Meeehh... I just traded in my Charge rooted, and everything. Custom ROM, custom kernel. Not even a peep. Hell, the dude who took the phone had his Charge in his hand when he took it.
Verizon took my first Incredible with a cracked screen, and bricked with no insurance. Only thing they asked was "Do you have a phone you can switch to in the process? No? We'll overnight your new one. Have a good day."
It just depends on who takes it, and their mood.
Im a first time andriod phone buyer and am starting to wonder if I bought the wrong one....
Is it just me or is this forum dead compared to the Skyrocket. Will there be an unlock for the boot loader?
Needless to say, I like the phone just wish we had more support...or will that come with time?

Can you post a link to where HTC has said they will release an unlock?
just google around the fourm, Except AT&T all HTC Vivid variations are already supporting unlocked bootloader (Through htcdev.com)
If you are AT&T , bootloader is locked at the request of AT&T and I know you can call AT&T and complain because in USA google pushed for a law that would make all device unlocked on the new 700Mhz spectrum.

HTC internal tech told me that ATT has not requested a lock nor do they have the authority to enfoce it. Then again their site says bootloader locks vary on devices based on their partners, not really sure there other then shiofting blame maybe
Drew
The only reason I can think of that an Internal Tech would say AT&T did not request the Lock is to cover their asses from a stupid lawsuit from AT&T considering how much money they have and how many different manufacturers exist. Other than that everything is pointing to it actually being AT&T who wants the phone locked considering the Rogers variation is unlocked. Also if you look at what phones are on that website that say can be unlocked None of the AT&T phones are on there even though they can be unlocked.

Its very confusing beacuse both ATT and HTC have stated that neither of them have requested a bootloader lock and that it would be released "later"
I could see ATT requesting lockes however everyother device that is currently available LG, Samsung and ZTE all have unlocked bootloaders. So its very confusing that they would request locks on only 1 of their 10 Android devices.
TBH i have no idea, both both companies are saying the bootloader will be unlocked "later"

I think the forum is slow for a couple of reasons:
1. Like others have stated, there is only so much you can do without permanent root.
2. The phone just WORKS! I purchased $50 worth of apps on my old Atrix just to get it to do what Sense and HTC's implementation of Gingerbread does.
... Also, the phone is new and few accessories.

I totally agree, I unlocked the bootloader and got the temp root but now I don't know why I would need either of that. The only thing I did was removed some bloatware from system (not that I needed to do it). Everything till now seems to be perfect just works flawlessly or is broken that rooting won't fix.
I don't think there is is any ROM with sense 3.5 and 2.3.5 which can ported etc....I would rather wait for ICS and I don't think any one would work on porting it for this device yet any ways ,,,
the only things I am looking to get out of root (other than some custom ROMs) are getting mobile hotspot working and to a lesser extent TiBu.

i'm a little confused it seems tons of Devs have united and are trying to crack the bootloader for the GS3 for verizon but im a little lost as i am new to motorola phones.
Why has this not happen to any of the newer motorola droid phones? it seems there getting this thing cracked fast but the Droid 4 and razr still have locked boot loaders and these were more of a flag ship phone over the GS3. has no one made this big of a deal over a motorola phone?
Probably because Motorola bootloaders have been locked for quite some time, and nobody (that I am aware of) has managed to crack them.
The original Milestone's bootloader hasn't been cracked even.
Luckily, we can still get around the bootloader issue via safestrap, and I'm hoping the kexec exploit.
Was there this big of a uproar when the milestone came out? Or any other motorola phone with a locked boot loader? It just seems motorola is not that big of a deal compared to samsung

Quite the opposite, which is why we have SafeStrap. Remember, the locked bootloader is not exactly Moto's "fault", it's just that it is what the carrier asks of them. This may be for various reasons, including that the MPAA requires locked bootloaders on any device with Netflix preloaded. (Hence, the locked boot loader on the Nook Tablet)
Motorola, however, is one of the few companies to "properly" lock their device. When they say "locked" they mean it. No one has yet figured out a way around it, but instead we're investigating kexec and options like Safestrap that give us sometimes more options than other manufacturers, and without even having to hack the bootloader itself.

but i see alot of stuff saying moto was gonna make a program like HTC has that unlocked it for you is that true?
They had the program to unlock it, but verizon prevented them from releasing it. Also one reason I think that theres such an uproar about the gs3 is because there ARE other models of the gs3 with unlocked bootloaders and samsung promised to have unlocked phones, while moto has never had an unlocked phone since the OG droid.

Hi,
Now that there is a real possibility that motorola unlock the droid 3 bootloader, will it be possible to flash a modified radio that will bypass Verizon's subsidy lock? this would solve the simlock problem for all of us stuck with locked phones not responding to normal unlock codes available online.
If I'm correct this has already been done on the atrix?
What do you think? if it's possible we could gather up a task force to do the job.
A true bootloader unlock from Motorola? Where did you hear about this?

Its been all over the web. (although the only phone on the list is Sprint's Photon Q which was already announced as unlockable)
BUT
1. If you think Moto will unlock the bootloader so you can run ICS or JB on your D3 rather than buy a new phone......
or
2. If you think VZW would allow Moto to unlock the bootloader (if you're in the US) so you can run ICS or JB on your D3 rather than buy a new phone.....

Actually I'm a bit , nonetheless I'm really hoping that it will be possible to unlock my Droid3.
I live outside the US and none of the subsidy codes I bought over the web worked. *
running ICS/JB on this phone is only a matter of tie, whether the BL gets unlocked or not, thanks to Hashcode's et al. efforts.
What I hope will happen if/when the BL gets unlocked is the possibilty to run custom/patched radio that will bypass Verizon's *%$£d subsidy lock.

Yes motodev has released a bootloader unlock tool. The only devices supported are photon q, razr dev edition (which was always unlockable) and the xoom. We are likely to see more devices going forward but i doubt any older devices will get support. As mentioned by someone else, why open up more options for us, when they can get us to buy a new device.
Honestly I don't know why they bother. Seems in the end many devices get their bootloader bypassed or cracked. Kecex is going to support a number of devices. The verizon sgs3 got cracked in a couple weeks. All they do is drive innovation in hacking.
Sent from my XT860 using xda premium
First, the bootloader has to be unlockable which the Droid 3's is not. Motorola would have to release an updated bootloader which they will not do.
The site also states that August 2012 and future devices will be able to access this feature/function. Nothing for current devices.

Hi
I recently dropped my Droid 3 that had been unlocked by my ex boyfriend in water and was unable to save it. I do not believe I can do the process myself. I am wondering if there is any one close to the Springfield, IL area that can like meet me and help me or do it for me and I can pay them. I really loved that phone. I don't think I would be happy with a different one. Thanks
We’re happy to announce that the MOTOROLA ATRIX™ HD will be available in a Developer Edition and also be a supported device in the Bootloader Unlock program. It has the same features and specs as the regular MOTOROLA ATRIX HD, but allows the infinite customization possibilities offered by an unlockable bootloader. Unlocking a bootloader isn’t for everyone, but for some, it’s a must-have.
http://www.motorola.com/blog/2012/11/06/announcing-the-motorola-atrix-hd-developer-edition/
Now that's some bull****.
I don't understand why they won't do it like HTC and let anyone opt in to unlocking their bootloader. I doubt there's any real changes. Just certain IMEIs or serial numbers are able to use the unlock.
When Moto shafted the Atrix users and reneged on updating the Atrix I should've stayed away. I don't understand how they sit down in a room and come up with these ideas and think the customer will not mind.

I dont expect an unlocked bootloader. I just don't like having the option for an unlocked bootloader coming out a month and a half after I got the phone. Also I spoke with moto and asked about the retail version being unlocked and they said "I can not answer that question, as I do not have permission discussing that" so I have never heard motorola say that the Atrix hd will NEVER be unlocked. They may have but I have not heard it. Either way I like this phone, but they should have said MUCH earlier that they plan a dev edition so everyone that wanted the dev edition could wait. Not get stuck with the retail version.

I remember reading that several places. It's a shame the Moto can't do right by their customers and support us, rather than bowing to ATT. I understand they need ATT to carry their phones, but there needs to be an option for us. That is what is suppose to be what is great about android, the unlimited possibilities. A dev edition phone is helpful to those that don't already have the phone. I for one will not sell this phone then spend 250-350 more for the dev edition, I'll buy a sammy phone. I believe that since we are the customers that spend OUR money on their product, we should get more support. I for one will not buy another moto device if I don't see a huge improvement in the way the support their customers.
