With all this bootloader unlock talk... I know HTC finally allows it buuuut, what about att? Will they void my warranty if I ever send it back in (for like a replacement or something)
No way of knowing really until someone tries it. I honestly don't think they would even look to see if it was unlocked depending on your situation. Mine is unlocked and if I had to send it in to AT&T I would just get it back to stock software and hope they don't check the bootloader.

yes, it will void out your warranty. do you mean if you go back to the at&t store within your 30 day return policy to exchange, or sending it in to HTC???
If youre returning it to AT&T, don't worry they never check. Whether it be cause its broken or for an exchange. As long as it some what looks like its booting up normally you should be fine (although I exchanged my Atrix 4G with a flashed bootloader that they saw and they didn't say anything).

I'm out of the 30 day window. I meant if I get a replacement from att (because my screen is cracked)
you should be fine. if anything you can always lock it..
Unlocking the bootloader only screws you for certain software issues. Any other kind of issues like a cracked screen that have nothing to do with the bootloader are still covered under warranty.

Even if you re-lock the bootloader it will show "RELOCKED" instead of "UNLOCKED".

Hi, I bought my new Nexus one in the US when I was on holiday, now as it is in the uk, does this mean I have no warranty? I'm thinking to rooting my phone and without a warranty, I MIGHT unlock the bootloader...
you still have warranty but you probably need to go through the US division.
So if it does break i'm stuck? But I could try sending it to HTC UK and see what they say...

After thinking about it, even if I do have a warranty in the US and not here in the UK, I might as well void it as it would be too problematic for me sending it back...
Just shoot off a quick email to HTC UK. Or phone them even. You'll get your true answer then

Thats exactly what I did, what a good idea
So I tossed an e-mail to HTC, where they asked me for my serial number..
I gave them it and they got back to me saying I have warranty for 2 years, hooray?
As this now means that im gonna have to wait to unlocking the bootloader?
Maybe i'll just unlock it after one year or when I just have a "oh, *** it" moment
Im a first time andriod phone buyer and am starting to wonder if I bought the wrong one....
Is it just me or is this forum dead compared to the Skyrocket. Will there be an unlock for the boot loader?
Needless to say, I like the phone just wish we had more support...or will that come with time?
With a locked bootloader we are in habit of a jam however HTC had stated they will release the unlock, hopfuly Revolutionary and the likes are looking into exploits to get soff and boot

Can you post a link to where HTC has said they will release an unlock?
just google around the fourm, Except AT&T all HTC Vivid variations are already supporting unlocked bootloader (Through htcdev.com)
If you are AT&T , bootloader is locked at the request of AT&T and I know you can call AT&T and complain because in USA google pushed for a law that would make all device unlocked on the new 700Mhz spectrum.

HTC internal tech told me that ATT has not requested a lock nor do they have the authority to enfoce it. Then again their site says bootloader locks vary on devices based on their partners, not really sure there other then shiofting blame maybe
Drew
The only reason I can think of that an Internal Tech would say AT&T did not request the Lock is to cover their asses from a stupid lawsuit from AT&T considering how much money they have and how many different manufacturers exist. Other than that everything is pointing to it actually being AT&T who wants the phone locked considering the Rogers variation is unlocked. Also if you look at what phones are on that website that say can be unlocked None of the AT&T phones are on there even though they can be unlocked.

Its very confusing beacuse both ATT and HTC have stated that neither of them have requested a bootloader lock and that it would be released "later"
I could see ATT requesting lockes however everyother device that is currently available LG, Samsung and ZTE all have unlocked bootloaders. So its very confusing that they would request locks on only 1 of their 10 Android devices.
TBH i have no idea, both both companies are saying the bootloader will be unlocked "later"

Permanent root will likely come from boot loader unlock.

I think the forum is slow for a couple of reasons:
1. Like others have stated, there is only so much you can do without permanent root.
2. The phone just WORKS! I purchased $50 worth of apps on my old Atrix just to get it to do what Sense and HTC's implementation of Gingerbread does.
... Also, the phone is new and few accessories.

I totally agree, I unlocked the bootloader and got the temp root but now I don't know why I would need either of that. The only thing I did was removed some bloatware from system (not that I needed to do it). Everything till now seems to be perfect just works flawlessly or is broken that rooting won't fix.
I don't think there is is any ROM with sense 3.5 and 2.3.5 which can ported etc....I would rather wait for ICS and I don't think any one would work on porting it for this device yet any ways ,,,
the only things I am looking to get out of root (other than some custom ROMs) are getting mobile hotspot working and to a lesser extent TiBu.

I had a HTC one, what my relative bought from t-mobile directly.
Somehow he didn't like it so sent it to me, but since I have a Droid DNA, I've decided to sell it as used.
The guy, who bought it told me at the time of purchase, that he didn't like how the phone is turning on with the t-mobile logo (even though the phone was unlocked by code bought), so he will flash it with european unbranded software.
After 3 days of purchase, he called me that during flashing, he saw that the phone doesn't have warranty because the software has been tampered with.
What I think is that he had to unlock the bootloader to flash a non-branded software, after that he found out he is unable to do the flashing himself or that the phone has lost warranty that way, and trying to blame it on me by returning the phone and telling me to buy it back.
Since I've never tampered with the phone's SW (never even plugged it into the usb port), and I know my relative is dumb at even using the phone, I'm almost 100% sure the guy has total responsibility for the warranty loss.
Is there any way for an end-user to check via imei or S/N when the bootloader was unlocked? Or when the warranty was lost?
You could call HTC customer service with the serial number and they will tell you when the bootloader unlock key was issued

Ok, so I bought my M8 full price from Amazon, so I guess that already means I don't qualify for any warranty options from Sprint right? Or do I?
And also, regardless of where I bought it, I still qualify for 6 months of screen repair from HTC Advantage, right?
Would I lose everything if I use the HTC Dev unlock method? Even the screen replacement? What about root/s-off methods that do not rely on HTC Dev?

If you have insurance they will handle warranty issues for you, not sure what they will do if you don't.

If they follow the law you will not lose warranty just for unlocking. Per the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act HTC would have to show that actions you took after unlocking your bootloader caused you to damage the specific item claimed under the warranty. That doesn't mean they will follow that though, plenty of reports of people calling up HTC for warranty service and being told it's not covered because they unlocked. There are also plenty of people who have had no issues getting a device fixed after unlocking. So, it's a crapshoot.

I don't have any insurance through Amazon or Sprint, so does that mean HTC Advantage is the only warranty I have?
So then would it still be best to use an unofficial unlock method so I don't basically submit a message saying "Hey, this phone has been unlocked" through htcdev if they still might complain about replacing the screen if I ever break it?

I don't see that being an issue. Unlocking your bootloader would have nothing to do with a broken screen.

Either way you technically have a warranty even without Sprint insurance, they just won't repair your device for free. I believe the fee is $75 to repair it, assuming they actually can repair it, and with this phone there probably won't be much they can fix. If they can't repair it in store if you have insurance they will replace it for free, if you don't have insurance you will have to contact HTC.
I would recommend an unofficial unlock method if one exists, chances are you will either be able to re-lock it or the phone will be so messed up they will have no way of knowing you unlocked it. I wouldn't worry so much about the screen, surely they will not claim you cracked your screen because of an unlocked bootloader. I think anyway you look at it you should be covered by HTC Advantage for 6 months.
Hey did a search and didn't find an answer, or at least didn't see it.
So if you get your N6 from a carrier (except VZW cause they don't offer) and unlock the bootloader does that void insurance or warranty?

depends on your carriers rules. most likely it does void your warranty.
Not really sure it applies to insurance I jumped into the pool with my last phone while drunk . The phone still booted was unlocked and on Verizon ...they still sent me a new one .
I am also running my N6 on Verizon currently. It stayed locked for like 12 hours until I remembered all the reasons I run a rooted phone; ad blocker, back up, customization.
