Clearly, you can use the tethering within Kies to connect to the interweb which is a massive bonus over most other 2.1 versions
Has anyone investigated using a Galaxy as a Wireless Access Point?
There's a 'droid app here
h t t p : / / c o d e .g o o g l e. c o m / p / android-wifi-tether /
But the Galaxy S isn't mentioned.
Does anyone know of an app that would work the same?
Basically, I want to avoid having to swap my Sim into a MiFi type device (Google it if you've no idea what I'm talking about)
I tried today:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
"wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre7.apk"
and .. it works. Sometimes Ive got some "unknown state", but restart (app) will work.
Eh, its built into the galaxy s. RTFM.

I know how to tether using Kies
I'm talking about setting my phone up so that I can not only access the interweb from my PC using Kies, but also PSP, DS, netbook and so on.
D'OH!
Settings -> Wireless and Network -> Mobile-AP Settings -> Mobile Accesspoint
I thought all Galaxy S phones has mobile AP already built in as standard.
Steps:
Head to settings > Wireless and network > Mobile AP settings
Once in this area, if you have wifi turned on already it will pop up with the following message 'Disconnect Wi-Fi for using Mobile AP'. Click yes.
Next, click the menu key and click settings. In the options that appear,
- tick 'Mobile AP'
- untick 'Hide my device'
- tick 'Tethering' (if you wanna use)
and use the connection password in that screen to connect or use your own.
This all works for me.

Exactly THAT is built in!!!!!!
A wireless AP!
Yup, you're right cheers.
Now setup and working.
What's odd is that most plans in the UK actually ban tethering and yet the SGS is the only Android phone that has all this functionality out-of-the-box.

IIRC I think all US carriers are blocking it except for Sprint.
[Solved] Possible to use I9000 as a wireless modem using wifi NOT 3g?
I was wondering if there is some way to have the Galaxy S allow a WIFI connection when wired to a computer as it does not seem to naturally allow this.
Asking because I've just moved an old desktop pc upstairs and too cheap to by wireless usb modem.
lets try to understand you a bit more
so you want to share your SGS internet connection with another computer using WiFi
but you do not want it to use 3G for data.
Then how are you supposed to connect to the internet without a Conexion to the internet?
the USB dongle to RJ45 is not compatible with SGS
I think he wants this:
internet->dsl/cable->rj45->wifi router->galaxy S->usb cable->old PC
instead of standard tethering:
internet->mobile broadband->galaxy S->usb cable->old PC
I should have mentioned in the original post that I have a wireless router for all my internet connection needs. I was hoping to utilise the Galaxy S in connecting my old pc to my unlimited cable internet provider through wifi rather than to limited 500mb package through phone provider (3G).
So like zorxd said "internet->dsl/cable->rj45->wifi router->galaxy S->usb cable->old PC"
I take it this is deliberately restricted to force using provider, anyway around it?
that scenario is possible
look for the pdanet app
it enables the USB tethering
but why not just put in a cheap $5 10/100/1000 nic or usb wireless to the old PC ?

I agree with this. Might as well buy a usb wireless unless you're only using the internet on the old PC a few times per month or something.

The pdanet app looks to be perfect for what I need. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction Allgamer.
This is the most convenient option for infrequent use on a desktop I may be using for parts in a few weeks time.
The Mobile AP option is not available with SFR in France either.
Is there any way that this can be enabled?
I installed appbrain - and it lists mobile AP setting as an installed app. However, I'm not able to enable it. Any pointers?
Rtfm. Lmao.

On T-Mobile, their phones' built in tethering switches you to a different APN to inform the carrier that you're tethering.
I've heard rumors that Verizon uses deep packet inspection to guess whether you're tethering or not. A Verizon salesperson told me that they can guess only based on the amount of data you use.
Which brings me to my question:
Does the Droid 4 switch you to a different APN when you tether? Does Verizon use DPI? Or do they make a scientific wild-ass guess based on the amount of data you use?
Thanks, guys.

While I have no idea, I have done light tethering on my D4 and haven't had an issue. I've also used my OG Droid as my main source of internet for a week while my cable was down.
At the moment, tethering w/out a tether plan is a bit of a risk, although I've never heard of anyone on VZW getting in trouble for it. Anyone heard anything different?

Same. I haven't heard of anyone on VZW getting in trouble for tethering without a tethering plan.
Okay. Thanks for the input. Light tethering is all I want.

When you tether does the Verizon screen pop up? On my D2G stock tethering was impossible without Verizon knowing. I'm looking at a D4 and no tethering is a dealbreaker. It's for occasional data (light usage) while on long trips.

USB tethering works without any hassle. Wifi tethering does an entitlement check, but if you're rooted you can disable the check.
If you use the wifi tethering app, there's no check either.

I got it working on Rogers, on the leak. Had to add my tethering APN though SQLite, please read more details here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27099169&postcount=2
I had to change my MTU to get USB tethering to work reliably. After that, I had no issues.
I haven't changed the MTU, and USB tethering seems to work fine. Verizon didn't even try to upsell me when I launched my laptop's web browser.

How do you actually do USB tethering? Do you select PC mode?
I rooted my D4 and installed the 'Wifi Tether" app and it works great. Used it to connect an iPad2 and a win7 laptop. Using this lets you have more than one device connect through it. Using USB would only have that one computer connected.

To use USB Tethering you obviously need a USB cable connected to your computer, then go to Tethering & Mobile Hotspot, and click on USB tethering.
Also note you also need to have WiFi disabled to use USB tethering. If WiFi is on the USB Tethering option will be disabled.
well not with a Droid 4 but with my Samsung stratosphere which is a 4G phone for verizon, i would use PDAnet and connect it by USB. i use about 15-25gigs a month and i have never had any problems. i don't torrent with my phone but i use it to download my PSN games that i buy from the store and also use it for online games like Swtor and WoW as my home internet is very very slow compared to my 4G speeds i get.
but also i do all my heavy tether use during late night (12AM-6AM) i never got throttled or anything before.
i used Fox Fi for my wireless tether app but lately i been having problems with it and it kicks me off 4G and i have to restart my phone but that is only for wireless tether
Hello,
Anyone know if FoxFi or other techniques work to tether the phone with a laptop to get internet from the phone onto the laptop? I know I can pay Sprint to subscribe for the hotspot feature, but I feel it's unjust because I'm paying for data already (not unlimited plan) so I feel it would be unjust double-billing to make me pay for the data twice essentially.
USB cable methods would be fine, in addition to bluetooth or wifi. Anything?
I tried a few of them and couldn't get anything to work. Root can't get here fast enough.

Foxfi doesn't work. Confirmed yesterday.
I am attempting to gain my MSL so I can change some APN settings and setup hotspot using foxfi and trick the authentication through the APN like on the S6.
This phone has been a real pain the rear trying to get access to things.
how can you get your msl, call Sprint?

you do not have to call Sprint to get your MSL/SPC - method described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2521276 worked for my LG G4 Sprint
Can you please provide instructions for enabling hotspot via foxfi without root? I can get to APN settings screen via ##3282# but there is no field "APN Type" on this phone
PDAnet+
If you haven't looked at it I would suggest PDAnet+. I can't directly link to it but the web address is pdanet.co. I personally use it with the USB Tether and it works flawlessly, for the most part. What I mean by that is if you don't have a koalality USB cable you WILL run into some issues. I was using my old G2 cable not realizing it was shot and would drop the connection and corrupt big downloads. The Free version has a few restrictions, but for light or general use I don't think that would be a major issue. I bought the app as I use my G4 as my internet on my PC . I game with it and download things with no issues. I downloaded all of GTA 5 (60gb) with no major issues either.
Could you elaborate on what is a koalality USB cable? I searched google for "koalality USB" and nothing came up.

LOL, he probably meant quality
USB cables are not born the same. Personaly I use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gombosdev.ampere to test the USB cable. You will see a huge difference in Amps between good and bad USB cables using the same charger.
hah thanks, didn't catch that. OK will try out both the PDAnet+ app and the Ampere app and see how they work.
So Much for pdanet+ says it's not supported by our carrier.

USB and bluetooth both work fine with foxfi (paid) on the phone and pdanet on the laptop. I suspect but haven't tried that pdanet on the phone in conjunction with pdanet on the laptop will work as well.
Foxfi, Tether It, and WiFi Tether Router are all working.
Just confirmed that pdanet on the phone with pdanet on laptop worked.
PDANet on laptop and FoxFi work beautifully for USB. WiFi tether doesn't work for me.

it used to be possible to enable stock tethering by changing APN Type to default, mms, dun , but I no longer see "APN Type" in the APN menu

I also used Klink, which is a paid USB tether with nice configuration features. I used PDAnet before Klink for USB tether, but could never get its Wifi tether to work when the native hotspot was still disabled.

Hey there. Just a couple of questions. Do you have Sprint, unlimited data, the latest OTA, and was it on LTE?
I tried today, September 22 for the first time and almost immediately got the pop up. I have Sprint unlimited with latest OTA but was on 3G with the pop up.
I followed these directions which I think is the same, http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-enable-wifi-tethering-on-sprint-lg-g4-without-root/ but wasn't sure what they meant when they said, "f it works good but if you get a popup saying “Due to network issues, tethering has been disabled”, you need to follow the same steps again but instead of selecting Internet in the APN settings select ‘cinet.spcs’."
Thanks.
Brad
Hey guys,
Is it possible to enable tethering without root? When I use the native tethering it just pops up a message that says to go to att.com/mywireless (but there are no options to turn it on there)?
Thanks guys, I need this functionality for work.
I'm on the 15 gig shared data plan and my tethering in available with out root I used to need root but when I changed to this plan it was no longer needed not sure if that was what made it available on my phone or something else. I will check the other phones on the plan and see if they also have tether available and let you know.

Hey, I have the unlimited data plan that comes bundled with direct tv, which I called and does not support tethering. they said I'd have to change to a non-unlimited plan that supports tethering, or get another device that has a data plan that has tethering, but the cheapest plan is 40 dollars a month for 2 gb of data. Does anyone know a way to root the phone (can send me a link) so that I can keep my unlimited plan and still tether? Or know some other option that allows me to keep my unlimited plan and still tether? Thanks!
Not sure of the status of them, but try out PdaNet and FoxFi ... The latter has been removed from the play store by sprint and at&t, but you can find the url in the FoxFi Addon description.
[edit]
Confirmed, pdanet is still a thing. One of the few apps I truly found worth what I paid for it.

Tethering is part of the mobile share data plan.

Hi
I am new and I have a question and a answer which probably is not the one you are looking for but you have to start some where to learn like you and me. My question is what is tethering without root. As for tethering I go to settings- connections- mobile hot spot and tethering and turn it on. Hope you don't mind a first day rookie bothering you and hope we can become friends here. Take care.
Someone correct me if I am wrong but rooting your phone will enable full tethering on this new unlimited data deal but it can be detected by att and in some cases att will automatically add a tethering fee to your bill if detected. However it's extremely hard to detect Android phones (and more expensive) so generally att pursues this more on Apple platforms. Just wanted to confirm my own understanding before I switch plans. If true, it's a win win for this community.

no root yet for the s6 active. but anyone interested in tethering i found a work around. dowload klink tether from playstore to run your laptop no root required. the app has simple intructions to get you going. once you have that all done now you can download a hotspot program on your laptop. i use connectify turns it into a hotsot so you will actualy be connecting to the laptop wich is running from your phone works fine. now you have free wireless tether. if anyone noes a easier tether option i would like to no foxfi didnt work for me as it did on other devices im currently running marshmellow on the s6 active
Is there any app or "fix" to enable wifi tethering on a G870A running 5.1.1 using Straight Talk? Tried FoxF, PdaNet+ and a host of playstore junk. Nothing.
I don't think if there is a native wifi tethering fix anymore. However USB tethering seems to work (tested on G900A). Have you tried ClockworkMod Tether? You will need to install the a client on the PC as well as the APK on the phone.

What application is it? EasyTether can handle some complex setups.
I need Wi-Fi for the car radio. No USB option there.
Assuming the phone is not rooted, you might be out of luck at the moment. I'm guessing that you want to share your unlimited data plan. Have you looked at how much data you have used in the past few months? Just wondering if a different service provider might be a better choice in your case.
Really don't use that much data even though its unlimited. I have an aftermarket radio that I would like to use the phone's data. Works great with my "retired S4" but have since started using the S5.

You may want to consider looking into ProjectFi and getting a Nexus phone for the service, that is my plan for my next phone which includes tethering by design. When I did the math, it turned out that my bill will go down and the savings would pay for the Nexus phone. $20 for the line + a penny for each megabyte.
