Looking at some of the issues with the HD video playback on the Tab 8.9 WiFi, should I even bother with it now or go with some else? I love the size of 8.9, but don't want to blow a chunk of money on something that is not going to perform.

Get the 8.9 LTE, it does not suffer from the crappy tegra 2 video preformance that the wifi model does.

So all tegra 2 tablets have the same issue? Wouldn't that be pretty much all of them at the moment right? I don't see myself spending even more money for something that should work or am I not seeing it right?

Basically yes, it is common knowledge that the Tegra 2 chipset does not preform very well with high bitrate video of various types.
The reason being, that NVIDIA decided not to include the "NEON" chipset instructions in the Tegra2 chip.
The NEON cpu instructions are for hardware acceleration of video decoding, the Tegra2 has to do in software, what the Qualcomm Snapdragon can do in hardware.
This not only means faster rendering of video, but also lower battery usage for the same video playback.
I regularly watch 15+ GB h.264 bluray rips on my LTE tablet, you absolutely would not be able to do that with the Tegra2 Wifi version.
So in pretty much all aspects the Snapdragon is better any downfalls for the AT&T version I should know of? Model SGH-I957 correct?

Yup it is all around a better chip.
Even the graphics chip in it is pretty damn good, and I dare say comparable (better?) to the tegra 2 in 3d acceleration.
However, having said that, there are a number of "Tegra Optimized" games that will only work / look good on tegra devices, simply because they are coded for it.
To me the only reason to get the Tegra equiped model is if there are some tegra optimized games that you just have to have, and if thats the case, I would just get an ASUS Transformer Prime, which has the new Tegra3 quad core, and does have the NEON acceleration for video as well.
BTW my roomate has the ASUS Transformer Prime, its nice, but I would take my 8.9 LTE over it any day of the week, and twice on sunday
Performance wise, they seem pretty damn equal all around, and infact my LTE sometimes seems faster believe it or not.
Plus I love the 8.9 form factor, the 10" just seems like it wastes alot of space, for almost no discernible difference in screen size.

This is my primary reason why I'm looking at the Tab 8.9, the size and lightness of it. Generally, new, the Tegra 2 version is 400USD. Compared to the AT&T LTE version, which is 630 new or 480 with a two year contract . . . and 35 dollars a month.
I'd like to pick up a Tab 8.9, likely the Tegra 2 version too. But I'm concerned that Samsung is going to refresh it soon. :/
ok stipid question alert. I presume it would be ok to purchase the lte version to use solely in the UK?

From what i understand the i957 supports just about every gsm/hspa frequency out there.
Thats the main reason they are using the qualcom chip over the tegra, it supports way more frequencies.
I dot know if its unlocked in the sense it can be connected to providers other then att or not though maybe someone else can elaborate on that.
Thanks for the reply. I guess if I want to use just wifi, that wouldnt be a problem.
my other questions are:
If I can remove all at&t branding in the software?
Can I buy the lte version without the at&t logo on the casing?
If someone could confirm if I did put a UK gsm sim card in it, would it work?

The Flyer looks to be a pretty sweet machine. It will be running Honeycomb as well. HTC seems to think that 7" is best for portability as well. I think the HTC may be a good contender for the GT...
Thoughts?
http://www.slashgear.com/htc-flyer-tablet-official-15132992/
alternatives to SGT are loosely being discussed at this thread too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953956
Some things that drove me to SGT (i got my about 6 weeks ago):
-phone!
-here and now
No mention of phone support on the flyer yet and flyer is q2 2011. By that time, Sammy (or someone else), may have new 7" SGT with dual or maybe quad cores and all sorts of stuff. Or, if/when flyer is available, the next gen TABs will be in the rumor mill.
Tech is a buy now thing. Anything you buy is already out of date or behind the bleeding edge.
I also read that the HTC device will not be Honeycomb but rather version 2.4

I'm not trying to be rude here... but how do you know the "stylus is crap" on a device that isn't even released yet? I mean, if you know... how have some sort of legitimate/logical insight to this, I want to hear it. Again, not trying to be rude... just wondering how we know it's "crap", when it's not even available.

No 3g? Why would it have all the hspda/wcdma specs? http://www.droiddog.com/android-blog/2011/02/htc-flyer-roundup/ (for europe/asia so maybe no north america). no 4g, yes appears that way. Still no mention of phone (albeit it appears to have gsm/edge radio)

Judging by the specs, I would expect it to support T-Mobile US 3G as it mentions AWS in the available bands.

And a 1.5GHz processor, which I would think, could probably be OC'd to about 2GHz. That would be pretty impressive by any tablet standards.

the gpu of the galaxy tab is much more powerful , the flyer uses same processor in the desire hd but overclocked version(8255 with adreno 205) , so to reach 2.0 ghz it will be extreme overclock , i prfere galaxy tab over flyer
Add terrible battery life according to the specs. Only four hours when watching an hd video.
Also an ounce heavier than the tab. Overall dimensions are bigger too.
Was originally holding off for the flyer but after weighing the pros and cons, the choice was pretty clear.
I got a deal for the galaxy tab (bell) (3G/Wifi) - used for 200$ including the box and every thing. I've never used android before but I've been looking to buy an android phone not the tablet. I was thinking of getting Nexus s or galaxy 2 as my first android phone but when i got this deal i was confused. I don't know if the apps on tablet are different than that on phones. Also, if i can connect this with Hdmi without using the media dock or DLNA. is it the same experience as the phone, i mean same apps and so on. And is there any honeycomb for this tablet?
Tab is my first android device, I love it. Same experience as a phone if not better. No HDMI without dock , $200 is a Bargin, if you don't buy it I will lol

To b honest the tab is pretty crap out the box, once you flash a new ron you'll be having fun, the themes don't affect the tab like it would a windows system, as the themes replace the graphics rather than run on top.
Ram isn't really an issue I usually have 200-260mb free. The prettiest of games only use around 100-150mb
And so far every app I have tried from the market has worked perfectly

Crap out of the box? That must depend on what you're using the tab for, or the carrier - CDMA vs GSM - they're different hardware and not just the radio.
I have a GSM tab, and I use mine to surf, stream video and music from me media center, read ebooks, and video chat with my daughter. I don't play any games -- maybe that's why yours needed a rom. Mine didn't. I haven't had a single issue with mine in the 2 weeks I've had it. No reboots, no issues whatsoever. Rooted, ran OCLF, installed about 100 apps. No problems. No reboots. No FC's.
i forgot to mention something
the tab comes with an extra 2 years warranty, if i do roms and kernels or any kind of hacking what will happen to the warranty?
As soon as you root....there GOES your warrenty.
However if you unroot....what they do not know will not hurt them.

I'd keep in mind that if the person selling it for $200 got it from a CDMA carrier (Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, etc) and isn't going to honor the contract, you'll essentially have a wifi only tablet, as the ESN will be blacklisted and you'll never be able to activate on any carrier. No warranty either.
It's still a steal at $200 even if it's wifi only.

It is crap out of the box however you won't know that until you try out a custom rom like overcome and see the performance improvements compared to stock. Overcome rom is a significant improvement in performance and stability. Give it a shot and you'll see. But if you're afraid about the warranty then stick to stock.
OK, probably gonna have the oppurtunity to get a 7" soon.
Was looking at the WIFI version. I did read here it does have GPS module which is good.
Can I put 3.0 on this? (Sorry been really busy and since I hadn't bought one yet, I hadn't kept up on everything going on with Android).
I know that there are some cool GSM firmwares I had been looking at, why I was gonna pick up an AT&T model. Can I use these on the WIFI only?
Anything else I should know?
The 8.9 in version is coming out early summer (any day.) You can't wait? It has the Tegra 2.

You can't put honeycomb on this as yet, but have it under very good authority from excellent dev that this will be starting soon, keep an eye in the Android Dev section and it will be released there, the tag will more than likely be wifi only or GT-p10101 honeycomb Alpha which hopefully be shortly >:¬}
Hi,
I got the P1010 "Wifi-only", and although it is a quite good tablet, I can't advise you to buy it. If you like this model, you should purchase the original 3G version. Why ? Because Samsung has lowered the technical specs on the wifi version (less powerful CPU and GPU).
The user interface feels a bit more sluggish, and some games compatible with the former 3G tablet simply won't work in the WiFi edition. In addition, the custom roms designed for 3G version are not compatible either. However you can still root your device (i've done it).

Cool. Are there any custom firmwares for the WIFI only yet? (I can start browsing tomorrow). And does the GPS fix for the other 3g tabs work for the WIFI only version?
The graphics card are not as god but i don't notice much of a difference to be honest i still prefer the wifi only and did not see the extra money worth it when i can teather rhetorically device.
And still no Rom yet. Regarding the gps fix not too sure as have not browsed the gsm threads too much.

The Wifi model uses an OMAP3 SoC vs the original 3G that uses the Hummingbird. The difference between the 2 gpus (PowerVR SGX 530 vs 540) is very apparent if you plan to use the tab for media or games. As posted earlier, there is a slight sluggishness to the base UI animation and transitions, many newer/more graphically intensive games will be very laggy or not run at all, and media will need to be encoded to be a bit lower quality for it to run smoothly. If you don't need the tab to be a media/game powerhouse then the wifi version should be good enough.
don't use it for games so did not notice anything.. downloaded a few games on the device but did not play them (they were free with the sammy). regarding the movies, encoded all on 720 automatically for the size and never had an issue in playing them

720p?
And maybe if it was my money I'd take the 3g, but it's a gift. So it was that or something else I had no interest in.
Hopefully a rom can help with some of that sluggishness.
Didn't know they used a lesser GPU in the wifi only, that blows.
Also is there an official ROM for the 2.2.1 or .2/.3? Anything? Or do I just gotta wait and hope there are dev's working on the wifi model?

I would recommend u to buy the original tab.
The hardware is better and it has 3g.
Also its not a lot more expenisve than the wifi only model.
I got mine for 300€ from eBay
Also its the only tablet with phone functionality.
I don't know what the point of the wifi only tab is. if it had better hardware or at least the same as the original version just without 3g it would be okay for a significantly lower price..
But it doesn't.

What u can try is what my friend did. He bought a 3G version from ATT for $250. Then he called them after he received it and got transferred to customer relations. He told them the tablet plan is no commitment and wanted to cancel because wifi is enough right now and he's no longer traveling for work. They canceled his plan and now he has a brand new $250 3G version. He only did this maybe 2-3 weeks ago.

Well my deadline is the end of Sept. to get one or the other. Only reason I was debating SGS2 would be the Super Amoled Plus, the Extra 512mb Ram and 200mhz cpu bump and it's being developed, granted the att version is slightly different because the screen size will be 4.3 inches from what I hear. Also the Sprint Version is already up for Pre-Order on amazon, ran across it accidentally. So my guess is the AT&T version is right around the corner than. Oh yea and battery life, although that is yet to be seen so I can't judge too much there and also Gingerbread instead of Froyo.
I'm keeping my thrill over galaxy s2 and here's why. Froyo vs gingerbread I can care less but for other people it matters with that said. All the reviews and comparison test you see on the net is a galaxy s2 on gingerbread vs a lg thrill/optimus 3D on froyo. The S2 in results never runs away with it, in some parts the LG does. So do the math if I have a phone running an outdated software but is keeping up with the latest and greatest software what will happen when I get the latest software? Besides the dual channel support is very important. I posted this video somewhere else in the forum but I'll post it here again. Watch the video it just makes sense > >

No. But how often will you use 3D?

or LTE....
keeping either of the phones is silly...within months of the SGS2 the Celox will be out...
If I can get something going custom on the LG I might actually keep it...we have another upgrade to use soon anyway and I plan on using that on the Celox

The thrill doesnt have LTE either, the Thrill has a 14.4meg HSDPA radio, where as the S2 has a 21meg HSDPA radio(the euro version atleast, unsure of the ATT version). Which where I live, matters. My S2 is faster then my thrill on speed tests when sitting side by side.
Both phones have pro's and con's. Nothing is perfect. As being an owner of BOTH devices I can say both are great. Browsing, surfing, gaming, all are about equal. Benchmarking, the S2 excells.
The only draw back is dev support, which the S2 excells 10 fold over the thrill, yes its just released, and it will take time.
Oh and also the Thrill is ATT branded. That alone just boils my blood. My S2 is unbranded.
If I had to pick again, I'd still pick the S2, simply because of design, weight, and the display. That alone is a HUGE selling point.
So everyone stop measurebating and be happy with your device.
Won't the S2 for att be branded as well?

Yes, unless you fork out 600$ and buy the legit S2 from amazon, the one with the home button, not the US version.

And those would be? Also, I doubt Gingerbread will bring much performance boost over Froyo, though I do hope LG updates the drivers for better performance (which Samsung has down with recent updates).
I agree, main reason to have SGII is the support it will get from here. Other than that the differences are not that different.
Thrill still holds its ground very well compared to its updated competitor.
This phone is fast and once updated with a custom rom to take more advantage of this phones hardware, I dont see the debate to really continue.
Yes it has 512mb more of RAM and 200Mhz of CPU speed, but the Thrill is using dual channel which has been proven to already be faster than the SGII.
So people can debate all they want and it wont matter. Whatever people own will be the device they defend to the teeth.
Main things I can say most people(non-techies) will use as a deciding factor would be SGII for the 2MP front facing camera, thin, sleek and extremely hyped, so people will want it to simply say they have it.
disclaimer: this is all IMO if you rage and panic, look in the mirror and realize this is the interwebs.....then slap yourself.
If I can't get the damn GPS on this thing fixed before the SGII is released, I will be trading.
I was hoping either of those phones would replace my iPhone 4. I have the LG Thrill but I hate the battery life on it and there's no way it could be my primary phone with a battery that poor.

I say get either or and you will be happy. With updates and ROMs coming in the future it usually drastically changes the battery life.
I also ordered a larger battery for mine and should recieve this week

There isnt a gps issue on the thrill that I am aware of....do you have a defective unit?
i think the point of my previous post was missed. if i am going to keep one of the 2 devices....the thrill vs sgs2... It will be the thrill @ $50.. (multiple lines so contract price is not issue here) The Celox should be out in q4 with faster processor and LTE....along with the rumored HTC lte phone.
Att and samsung pushed the release too far. within 45 days of its release (which still has not been confirmed) better phones will be out from HTC And possibly Samsung

I enjoy all of the GS2 touting in this Thrill forum.
Personally, the performance of the GS2 is nominally better than the Thrill. It's your choice if the extra $100 (or more) is worth it.

GS2 is running gingerbread...thrill ruining froyo. Wait til the update comes then well see who is nominally.
Custom Rom will really show who is top. Considering I have seen what bench marks for an SGS2 is when OC to 1.5ghz in one of those apps and really this one isn't too far behind from what I recall. Either way I might end up with both and probably wind up giving the thrill to my wife.

Gingerbread will not help it THAT much. It will all depend on how LG optimizes the drivers. On my nexus one, 2.3 actually hurt the performance.

I have both an couldnt be happier. Both phones are equally impressive. The S2 wins in my book because of the design, weight and pure sleekness. But for 50$ from radioshack for the thrill, you CANT go wrong.
And as for rom's head on over to the s2 forum and see everything . Besides I dont think anyone notable form the S2 will migrate to the Thrill. Possibly DesignGears, only because he is in the US.
DG is already here . He is the one who figured out how to.flash CWM for us.
Silly question but I'm still interested in how you guys think the note fairs over the padphone.
post opinions here.
You know of course that there is a small phone unit in our Notes!.
Seriously though,I am the kind of guy who likes to keep his handset in touch and not sort of abuse it by constantly snaping in and out,or box it away in another device or a tab for that matter, since mmy Note does both jobs excellently the Padphone is not for me, actualy not even considered it.
The padfone idea is pretty cool but the specs suck. Would love an accessory to the note with a large highres OLED screen though.

Second that. Looks cool. Kinda lame specs. Couldn't see my self using one. I have a phablet and a tablet so I'm content

If the PadFone were a Tegra 3 or TI OMAP 5 or something badass like that, then I would be more tempted.
The Padphone has wins in everything except screen resolution which is negated via tablet.
Snapdragon S4 > Tegra 3 and Exynos 4210.
Very interested... am looking forward to hit actually hitting the market.
(or even announcing pricing would be nice)
if someone creates a 4" phone with a 7"screen then I would say a true combination of portability and big screen functionality.
For Note, the size is still a little too big for portability, while it's a little too small as a tablet.
For padphone, it's not very portable (need to carry a pad and a phone).
I love the idea. If the specs are not up to it, then a waste of effort.
I can see it working really well for the Note, imagine the 10" Note as a dumb terminal for the Note? That would be cool. I imagine Samsung would have to pay Asus quite a bit for the inevitable patent, however.

dunno what the heck everyone else in here is talking about but you seem to know what youre talking about.
its not a last gen snapdragon, its a next gen snapdragon. it may not be the S4 pro, but the S4 is already pretty darn fast. for those who havent seen it, the snapdragon S4 dual core outperforms the tegra3 quad core chipset in almost all CPU tasks - thats a dual core beating a quad core.
so NO, the padfone specs do not suck. it has much more processing power than we have, and even though it doesnt have the next gen qualcomm GPUs, it doesnt need it when its in phone mode since it runs at a lower res in phone mode.
the only question is how well will it perform in tablet mode.

I actually just skimmed it from my phone and saw dual core snapdragon and assumed. If its s4 then ya screen res is really its only draw back

Unless Asus plans on upgrading the phone each year and keeping it the same dimensions so people can keep the tablet and still upgrade their phones....then I think Padphone idea would be smart. Problem is, every Android company changes their device design which is why they never can keep up with Apple. If Motorola made the lapdock so the it wouldn't need a tethering plan, I think the Atrix may have sold better AND they could have made a docking tablet and cornered the market. The Atrix (for me) was a great phone but At&t and Motorola hosed it up.

i don't think it's a problem since you upgrade the phone and the tablet at the same time for like 20% price more than just a phone

if it wasn't PenTile screen the res wouldn't be a drawback
your thinking is exactly the reason why have to sufer the pain of PenTile screens
The padphone looks handsome tho

padfone is nice if you are into "3-in-1" thingy. why own an ultrabook, a tablet and a phone; when you can have all of it in one price/package?
but for me, GNote is good enough.
phone - checked.
tablet - changed dpi to tablet mode. and walla, it's a tablet. phablet? the same.
ultrabook - get some wireless keyboard, and hook GNote to big ass LCD screen...
GNote wins hands down...
