My phone only displays the phone!computer icon, and I've tried all the button combinations for getting into download mode. I tried using a usb jig and it does nothing at all. The computer doesn't recognize the phone when I plug it in. Is there any way to fix this?
I've been reading as many posts about this as I can, but I've been awake around 30 hours now and I just don't think I can dig around any more. This really sucks
Sorry that you hadn't come across this sooner, but you can use that phone--/!\--pc screen as download mode. Just fire up Odin/Heimdall, hook it up to your computer, and Odin/Heimdall should see it and be ready to flash.
Thanks, but I've tried both and neither of them recognize my phone.
Have you looked through the Captivate Connection Issues thread. That will cover a lot of the steps that might get your phone and pc communicating again.
Faced this recently and i was not able to flash stock from phone ! com screen as the phone was not reconized by PC, Used a jig and the phone was in DL mode.
Do you have a proper jig or a home made one ?
Yes I have tried the methods in the Connection Issues thread, couldn't get any of them to work though.
I have a jig I bought from amazon.
Use that screen as dl mode

I've tried that but odin or heimdall won't recognize my phone.

Then I bet you either have a bad cable or you messed up your drivers by using both Odin AND heimdall.

Hmmm... but I've been able to use both before I bricked my phone.
I think there is something wrong with ur cable and jig its not possible that jig will not force this screen to DL mode. Did u checked the jig with another phone ?

Heimdall's drivers breaks Odin on that usb port.

Well, my usb cable never gave me any trouble before, and I've used it many times to flash roms to my phone.
The jig has never worked though, even when I tried it while my phone was functional. Should I try to make my own jig to see if that works? Is it possible that a jig doesn't work for all phones, or is that pretty unlikely?
I use separate usb ports, one for odin and the other one for heimdall.

You could have a bad jig, worst case scenario your phones usb port could be busted. More likely that the jig has a cheap or faulty resistor. I

Okay, so I guess my best bet is to just try to build my own jig. I'm thinking I'll try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889128
Remember the correct resistance is 301k ohms. Although anything from 287k-309k should work. But considering radio Shack resistors have 5% margin I've had phones not work with 300k. Just a fyi.
Sent from my ICS powered Captivate using Tapatalk
Okay, but I know next to nothing about this stuff, so how would I make a jig that's 301k or 309k ohm as opposed to one that's just 300k ohm. I've never had to buy resisters before so...
Uh probably will need to buy enough to sum up 301k (ei 3 100k + 1 1k) unless your Radio Shack (or other electronic store) has a 300k or 301k single resistor. This is what I used to make my first one. Just don't bother buying the usb head he uses (way to expensive). You can skip the connector and just stick the resistors directly in the phones hub though thats up 2 you.
Okay uhhhhh derp! That sounds simple enough lol just making sure I get it right. Thanks a lot man. I guess I'll be making a trip to radio shack as soon as I can. Hope this works!
I got the jig built and fidgeted around for around 20 minutes, and thought maybe this wasn't going to work. Then I remembered I had an old charging cable I found in an office trash can. I cut out the micro usb part and plugged it into the phone and touched the jig on pins 4 and 5, waited a few, and the download mode screen popped up! I was so close to giving up I couldn't believe my eyes! Thank you so much for your help everyone. I mean holy crap...

I used to be able to get into download mode via the vol+- and plug into usb combo, but that doesn't work anymore.
I was flashing the latest Serendipity (from a recently flashed stock ROM), and I had gone through the voodoo stage and had been sitting at the android figurine for about 15m, after which I stupidly pulled the battery and tried booting up again; now I can't get past the AT&T loading screen.
Windows seems to reinstall the captivate drivers each time I try to plug it into the pc when attempting to do the above recovery mode; perhaps that has something to do with it?

Had actually found that thread shortly after and went right out to get some 100k resistors. Trying it out now, thanks for the link though.
Hey man, I went through this phase myself and it can be extremely frustrating. You can make a loop with 3 100k resistors and touching the 4 and 5 pin, and it takes PATIENCE...not to mention I think the actual resistance needed is 301K, but it works with 300K, just may work better with the 301K amount of resistance. Either way, a USB Jig is relatively easy to make, and IMO a handy tool to have "just in-case".
There are a few threads, and videos available on youtube...take your time, do your homework and all will be well in the end. If you have any questions, I'd be glad to help if I can.

I've tried, but all it does is turn my phone off? Been trying for the past 2 minutes.
I took an ohmmeter measurement, and it pegs it at 293k. I have a bunch of 1k resistors, will it be worth the effort to attempt to line it up @ 301k, or should 293k be high enough?
Why is your phone on? Should be off with jig. If done right it still turn on into download mode

Err, that was a typo; all it does is turn my phone ON.
I have tried a jig before. If it is turning on you are not touching the right parts in the usb. Patience. Do you have the metal on the jig exposed

No, they aren't exposed; however, the ohm meter clocks in the jig @ 293k ohms. I'm going to get it up to 301k with a few more resistors and see how it goes.
Aha, jeez, having that downloading thing pop up has never been so relieving. Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction guys.
A note for anybody doing this: It's apparently important to have your jig at or very close to 301k ohms. To check, you can pick up a multimeter for $5-10 at any decent electronics store and check it out.
Any chance that this wouldn't work for us?

I don't see why not. I've used micro USB cables from other phones and devices for my DInc and it has yet to fail me.
host mode
If you just need an adapter then get an adapter.
The item you linked to is for using the phone as the HOST when mounting flash drives or other usb devices from the phone. Our phone does not have the driver stack needed to mount external usb. I am not even sure we have a usb controller chip for host mode.
Here are a few links I found the last time I went looking for a way to mount my point-n-shoot in order to get pictures from the camera straight to the phone without having to use a PC as a middleman.
http://hackaday.com/2010/02/10/usb-host-mode-for-droid/
http://community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/android/f/91/t/2122.aspx
There maybe a way to do it but I am not a coder at all and have no clue how to add the needed drivers and what not.
Good luck and please let us know if you figure out a way to do this.
Thanks for clearing up that host thing.
Well, damn.
:/
This would have been useful to hook up external hard drives or flash drives.
But you're sure about that? Cuz the female end would be sticking out of the phone, so something could be plugged into it. So maybe it will work? I dunno.
Sure the physical conection will work. but I don't think the phone will known what to do with it.
A cat's male conector will fit in a dog's female port, but that does not mean it will properlly mount so to say... and both may be damaged from the attempt..
Lol.... Freaky analogy.

So my otherwise adorable 1 year old somehow got his hands on my Captivate this weekend. When we finally caught him, he was chewing and slobbering on it pretty much right where the USB port is. After getting the phone back out of his grubby little hands, my wife and I took it completely apart and have had the whole works soaking in rice for a day or so.
When I put it back together, it booted just fine, and everything seems to be in working order. Except...when I plug a cable into the USB port, it doesn't charge, and it doesn't connect to my computer for storage mounting/flashing. This would be a bit of a problem.
I've checked for obstructions in the port itself and there don't seem to be any. I can get by for now without charging because my wife and I have the same phone (so we can periodically swap batteries...), but she's leaving town for two weeks at the end of this week. I really don't want to have to buy a new phone...so any ideas on fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

Once the USB port is gone its gone, you would need to get an external wall charger for it and a wifi file browser.
there might be some moister in it yet, but generally the captivates had issues with the USB port just flaking out like that. Its a common problem for this phone, and also has happened to mine.
Or you can just pay ~35$ to get it fixed, look in my sig. They are good!

Hmm...I didn't even realize that was an option. I'll be looking into that. Thanks!
They fixed mine and it works great. I would also order a new cable from them for like 7 bucks. It is all well worth it!
interesting, didnt know about that one either
Update:
It's apparently not *quite* as dead as I thought. It's still not recognizing my computer or telling me that it's charging...but apparently it is actually charging my battery. I plugged it into my computer just to see and left it. It never said that the phone is charging, but when I came back a few minutes later the battery meter had gone up, and it's still doing that fairly consistently.
That's at least good news for now. Even if the USB transfer is dead, I'm still OK as long as I can charge. As long as I don't have to use download mode...
That sounds like a bad cable, just buy one of those first, cheaper and easier to check!

It's nothing to do with the cable. We have four USB cables and two different car chargers. It's the same thing with all of them, and they all work perfectly on my wife's phone.

My first Captivate had a USB port go bad.. I tried 10 different cables and decided for some reason it was a ROM issue and got into download mode.. well let's just say I was buying another Captivate the next day.. lol
I did resurrect it by buying a Captivate with a broken screen on Ebay cheap. Combined the two and it's actually a later production and the GPS works good compared to hardly at all before. M yold screen and new guts.. Now I have a spare phone to try new Roms on without messing up my daily driver.. (Dark Knight 4 atm)
I see broke screen Captivates for $40-80 on Ebay regularly..
My wife also has a captivate with a dead USB port. So I went on amazon and searched for captivate batteries and external charger and found a package that came with 2 extended life batteries and the wall charger that charges one separatly from the phone while you use the other in the phine . Its made by Laza wireless and both batteries and charger was 15.99 and shipped free. Got it in two days and works great and was a whole lot cheaper than a phone.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but, I have had the same problem for months also caused by a toddler sucking on the phone and cables. I swap batteries daily. stock/1800/2430 mah. I am curious if anyone knows of a wireless charging option. I know my wii batteries are inductive and it is just the new battery and charger on a stock remote. is there an inductive charger and battery available for cappy? is wireless charging dangerous to the phone if it wasnt designed with it in mind? for that matter is anything available for anyother phones besides the lumia 920 and maybe nexus I think?
cheapest, best option is to get the USB port repaired by mobiletechvideos.com, imho.
I know of no induction solution for captivate that works without a good usb port.
I figured and also thought the Cappy wouldn't be a device supported by a new battery developer when there is so many newer ones out.
Thx

When I last used the phone the battery was nearly full.
Although the phone's been unresponsive, it's been on charge for the past few days.
EDIT:
Gonna have the battery checked and see if it's dead or not.
You accidently flashed a SGS2 ROM on your SGS1, right? Did you update the bootloader while flashing? It COULD (!) be that the phone is really bricked, though there is a very little chance to do that. Don't want to frighten you, sorry for that... What happens if you plug the jig and press the three button combo?

Yeah that's right.
I have no idea, I flashed one file through ODIN, so I assume it included a bootloader :/
Nothing happens with the jig and 3 button combo either.
I took the phone back into phones4u and they've sent it off.
If the is bricked, then I doubt they would be able to repair it and there's a chance that they'll send out a new phone. We'll see!

yeah, i would try connecting it to a port in the back of your PC as those are from the motherboard directly and have the best connection.
You can also try getting a factory programming cable.

DIY Programming cable:

I also found a link on ebay for the same cable posted above if you would rather buy one..

Also make sure your battery is fully charged. It might not be fully charged. If you have a different battery that will hap, but the cable above will force charge it , thats what is sais.
even though your battery status says okay I bet its below 50%
in that case it would not allow programming
try to charge it with a friends d3 or get one of the cables posted above

nice..
now you just gotta find that perfect rom to flash lol may I suggest team haters v4 or mavrom 4.0
both are top o the line...
nice catch with the battery charged thing. guess i will need to get a standalone charger.
