Stuck at Sbl.bin - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently upgraded from MIUI to WeUI, but decided I didn't like it.
So to get a fresh new start I tried flashing back to stock with Odin3 One-Click Downloader. However it froze so I pulled out the USB and tried again. Now I've been spending the last 6 hours looking up and trying different things like roger's, GB one clicks, etc.
My phone won't even start, but I can make it go into download mode with my USB jig. Only problem is that I keep freezing at Sbl.bin when using Odin.
Am I screwed or what?

I think I already have. I mean it's not even turning on. Only time it turns on is when I stick my USB jig into it to go into download mode. But that's it. No 3-button either.

If it still turns on with a jig then your not hard bricked luckily

Try another package without bootloader. Remember to run odin as admin and use a mobo usb port.

read this thread then before you try and use odin again go get a stock package WITHOUT bootloaders, that way if it still looses connection you can't hard brick, good luck.

[Q] Odin3 stopped while installing JH3... Help?

Hey guys,
While on my way to the super root patch ( forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751934&highlight=stock ), I first am trying to install JH3. I got Odin3 v1.00, put the .tar in the PDA box, and clicked start. Here's the log:

Pull the battery, get back into download mode with the key combo and start again. Odin is finicky and sometimes takes more than one try.

Well the log says "removed" so somehow your USB connection got interrupted... which means your phone is going to be in Phone/Computer screen hell.
Close Odin, unplug your phone, pull out your battery/sim/sdcard.
Open Odin, put in your battery, attach USB, and hold both volume buttons without applying power to get back into download mode to try again
If that doesn't work:
Unplug the phone from everything, hold both buttons and power... keep holding power till the screen turns off, continue holding power- the screen will turn off a second time, at that point release power and continue holding the volume buttons and you *should* get the download screen
Thanks for the quick replies! Unfortunately, Odin doesn't seem to see that it's connected. I don't see anything in the ID:COM boxes. I changed USB ports, nothing. Should I uninstall and reinstall the drivers?

Odin won't see it unless the phone is powered up in download mode, if you've gotten it to download mode and Odin still can't see it then yeah... your drivers might be fubar
Odin tends to work best for me if I get everything set up in Odin just short of pressing the start button before connecting the phone to the computer and putting it in download mode. Maybe it's superstition, but it seems to help me avoid some of those timeout issues.

Got it! Everything installed, super root added. Thanks for all your help!
Ok I apologize if this isnt where this belongs, but i have yet to find an answer i understand. Is odin a program that i can download to a desk top computer and run? I keep seeing open odin and do this , open odin and plug in phone. its always sounds like an easy step, but for someone who doesnt know how to even get odin, it has prevented me from doing alot of things with my phone. I see "needs odin' an i move on to the next thread I know its a firmware to help flash roms, but that is about it please educate a supernoob lol
I understand what you mean, I just got my captivate yesterday and spent a six+ hours figuring that stuff out. I think I might try to write up the steps I went throigh to help other Android noobs like me. I'm coming from an iphone so this is all new for me. The good news: I figured it all out finally and so can you. I now have JH3 installed, and the super root mod, overclocked and evertything. My quadrant score went from stock of around 900 something to 2160 after all the tweaks I applied. I cant wait to see how it performs with 2.2!
Ok, so basically heres what i figured out; to use Odin, you'll need a firmware image, and Odin will be included. I recommend upgrading to JH3 and installing SuperRoot. It makes everything pretty painless. SuperRoot installs lagfix, root, and much much more all at once.
Search for the SuperRoot thread (IIRC). In there is a link to instructions on how to restore your phone to stock. Look for the thread on JH3 and get that image. Post 6 in that thread has instructions, and the restore to stock thread has more of an explanation. Then, you can do whatever else you need. HTH.
Ill get on my pc in a minute a put the links in here.

Ok, I was wrong about the title: it's SuperRooterExtreme. I apologize for not being able to post links for you.
Code:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751934
Follow the instructions on the next two links to flash to JH3. The fist link is for JH2, but the directions still work. Just download the JH3 firmware.

This page has all the files you need:
Code:
samsung-firmwares.com/i897.htm
You need the firmware file, the PIT file, and Odin. The links for all of that is on the above page. The PIT file and Odin are under the section called "Flash Tools."
Once you've restored, you can follow the instructions for the first link I gave (SuperRooterExtreme). Or, you can do whatever else you want. This is just what I figured out yesterday.
I know what it's like to not know what Odin is! Took me forever to figure it out, I downloaded all kinds of stupid crap before I got it right.
The odin I downloaded from the samsung firmware website is only 167kb and an unknown file that won't open what's that about

The phone is not bricked at this point. As long as you can get into download mode you can flash with odin.
Odin 3 back to stock is your best option
I had a similar error happen to my phone... I tried to flash back to stock with Odin, but after it RESET my phone, I got nowhere. Plugging it in while not in download mode just gave me two screens flashing back and forth, the little wheel (frozen), then the little wheel and an empty batter (frozen). If I turn it on, I get the att boot screen, then black, then boot screen, so on. I tried booting into recovery in a million different ways, no good. I can get the phone into download mode easily enough, but Odin keeps doing the same exact thing.... help?
EDIT:
Did it again... Here's where Odin gets to, then it shuts my cappy off, begins to boot again. Got the att screen, then the frozen battery/wheel again.

Boot into recovery and master clear with odin one click jf6, of you can't get into recovery then master clear with the phone booted as far as it will go.
Reflash jf6 in download mode after the master clear. You might need to restart odin before you flash after the master clear, it's weird like that.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I'm trying to make a Factory Odin Flash for the Samsung Galaxy S "Showcase" for Cellular South!!! Hardware wise it's the same as the Fascinate and Mesmerize, just a little LITTLE different software...
I started off trying THESE instructions (steps 5-9) using a Rooted Stock Showcase to pull the files...
but as you can see on my THREAD we haven't had much success..
Is there any more files I need to be pulling, I see that most Odin Stock Flash files have more than just the 4 files I'm including which are:
dd if=/dev/block/stl9 of=/sdcard/factoryfs.rfs bs=4096
dd if=/dev/block/stl11 of=/sdcard/cache.rfs bs=4096
dd if=/dev/block/bml7 of=/sdcard/zImage bs=4096
dd if=/dev/block/bml12 of=/sdcard/modem.bin bs=4096
If you guys could help us out, we would REALLY appreciate it!!!!

Need a fix ASAP PLEASE!

I'm pretty sure my phone isn't bricked.
Ok, this is what I've done...
I'm on official Froyo for UK, unbranded handset (i think jpo/jpp firmware).
I tried to install Voodoo Lagfix (stable, released today) by Odin.
I started Odin up, put PDA as the Voodoo file, put my phone into download mode, connected the usb, waited for odin to detect it and then clicked start.

That's what Odin said, so I presumed it failed.
The screen was black and not doing anything so I unplugged it and removed the battery. When I put in battery and tried to start up phone, I get a logo of a flip phone on the left, with a line dash to a yellow triangle with black explanation mark, and then another dashed line to a computer.
Can I have a set of instructions on how to continue please!
which ROM did you install?
make sure the TAR is not corrupted
even if it failed, you can flash it again
the only way to find out if it works is to unplug and reboot it
there is always the JIG option if you don't have the 3 button modes

It's not a ROM, I tried to put on Voodoo Lagfix 5 (stable) onto my stock firmware from Kies (JPP/JPO).
Shall I try to reflash the Lagfix? I think I need to flash a firmware, can someone please tell me, starting to get a little stressed haha.
BTW, Download Mode is working.
I would imagine you are going to have to flash stock firmware to it, you can try flashing it again or perhaps a different kernel
got it working now guys
just reflashed it and it worked

Getting a symbol of a phone and PC with a caution sign inbetween when I boot my phone

What does that mean? I'm getting it after I put my phone into download mode and tried to put my phone back to stock with Odin. Odin hung up on me and I had to disconnect.
What do I do?

Not good. There is than one odin.sounds like you are going to have to use a different method. There is an odin that people with 1010 build have to use. Let me see if I can find the thread
try this
M y phone need this done 3 or 4 times before it finninshe odin some times.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911
odin is wonky especially if you have the stock rom jf6 on there. it is always best to have odin prepared with the pit and .tar files first and to use the usb cable + 2 buttons to get download mode, i remember way back when my phone was stock and i tried to flash stock it wasn't working. i flashed a beta rom jh2 ( the only altenative at the time) and it worked. never had another issue flashing and i have been through many froyo versions and ports from other galaxy s phones and used all the 2.1 roms. odin jf6 just didn't like to flash over jf6 but it usually eventually works.

Bricked phone, can't access download mode. Please HELP!

OK So,
I recieved a Galaxy S today, and having some experience with a HTC Desire HD I knew how rooting/flashing roms work. But this is different.
I have flashed twice so far. Once trying to get to CM7 MIUI but that failed, leaving me in a recovery loop. So I panicked. I then used someones one click odin restore on these forums, however being the idiot I am didn't read that that was vibrant firmware and not i9000 firmware. Download mode was working 100% before I did this, and now I can't get it to work for the life of me. Can someone please help? I am stuck at the AT&T boot logo and I can't do anything. I have the correct firmware from my carrier, I know how to flash it back to stock, but I can't get into the freaking download mode. Why is this? Is it disabled for good?
Please don't tell me my phone is a brick now....
Try the jig method. You can make your own or plenty on eBay. But I think you are in the 'not good ' realm. But usually you don't get to the boot screen either so there is some hope.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA Premium App
I've bought a jib off ebay so I will see if that works. What I am trying to understand is why would doing what I did somehow disable download mode? That makes no sense to me. And the phone isn't fully bricked since the boot screen comes up.
Download mode is software based and you flashed new software on the wrong hardware. It's on the bootloader I believe. The jig tries to get it forced as I think there is a backup bootloader but not at all sure on the details.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA Premium App
I see. Well I will try the jig and see what happens. If that doesn't work I will send back to Samsung and blame Kies for the problem. Which will be a bit sus since I have an at&t bootlogo and I live in Australia but oh well
One other question I have is if I do get into download mode, I have all the stock firmware files from SAMfirmware, however the files are only a pda file and a 512 pit file. I was under the impression I needed a csc file and something else? Or is it all included in the .tar PDA file?
Thank you for all your help I really appreciate it!
Usually what you need is in the tar for the pda spot. The others are more for mix and match. Just be aware that some firmware does not have all the files as they aren't meant to be flashed with pit. You will want to flash a pit so you'll need a complete one. My stock has no dbdata.rfs for example and if you use a pit then you get a mounting error as no partition is created.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA Premium App
I had a look inside the .tar file which is for I9000DTJP5 (exact firmware that I had on stock) and there is no dbdata.rfs like you said. So you are saying this firmware that I got from samfirmware.com is incomplete? And if I flash with the PDA + 512.pit I will get mounting errors? So do I just flash the PDA firmware by itself and tick re-partition?
Thanks.
PS I used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
So I'm guessing this changed my kernal and modem? I beleive the kernel does not come included in the pda .tar... or does it?
The pda will have the zImage in it (which is the kernel).
But try to find one with the dbdata.rfs file. For some reason I think jpy is one people use (anyone else following this thread). There are some roms that people describe as 'working everytime' and I think that its because they are complete roms. I'd also look at ezboot thread as you will want to make sure that any capivate bootloader gets removed and updated with an i9000 one but stock roms usually have the bootloader I believe.
Have you (out of curiousity) tried the captivate download sequence (vol down and power - I think - maybe while battery is inserted)?
Also might try the ADB method of prompting download for captivate.
Yeah none of samfirmware comes with the dbdata.rfs file. Other option would be to flash to something like Darky's rom. I must have screwed the boot loader since I came from froyo > CM7 bootloader and that's when things went wrong. What file removes & affects the bootloader from Odin?
Yes I've tried the captivate download mode which is Volume Down + Power like you said. ADB is impossible since the phone isn't operational.
So that easy one click odin that I used flashed the modem, the bootloader, and the rom. This is going to be hard to fix.
I need to use firmwares from my country... and JPU isn't listed under australia on samfirmware website
Well the bootloader for froyo and cm7 are the same but the problem was the file system was not (cm7 uses yaffs or something - not a linux person...) so you had to do a full flash with pit (and of course not with captivate rom in retrospect) which did screw up the bootloader and more.
You can also get a service (professional shops) called JTAG that opens up the phone and reflashes just the bootloader from point on the motherboard. Some information here on XDA. Its a specialized deep hardware fix but it solves even hard bricks that won't turn on (unless there is physical damage of course). Might cost $100 or so though.... Might be worth a search for local shops that do that.
found this post (and it references another thread).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749641
But its not good news... These are from last year but it looks like people were hooped in similar situations though i think the JTAG method has been formalized since then.
OK! The Jig works!!!!!!!!!! SO happy. However I am facing the problem of flashing now. Odin gets stuck at cache.rfs for about 20 minutes until I disconnect the phone and try again.
The files I am using with a 512.pit with re-partition checked are...
Phone:MODEM_I9000DTJP3.tar.md5
PDA:CODE_I9000DTJP5.tar.md5
CSC:CSC_I9000XSAJP4.tar (my countries correct csc file)
