I am having problems trying to flash a custom recovery on 2.32.651.2
I cant get flash_image command to work with the android sdk or terminal on the phone. busybox is installed
Also can't install rom manager from the market so i can get cw recovery working. Not compatible with the hero
I have searched and read most of the older posts that where having similar problems but they all just where able to solve with either options above.
Is there any other way to get a recovery on this thing?
Thx for the help
Edit.. So i found a put flash_image on per this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902493
Now when i try and run the command i get
[1] + Stopped (signal) flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Are you rooted ??? Are you cdma or gsm ?? How did you obtain root ?? What radio/baseband are you ???

I bought this off CL on the cheep after I lost my 3d. It is a Sprint CDMA hero that had the last 2.1 firmware and radio on it. It also appears that it was a refirb unit that came from asurion.
Anyways i was able to root it quick with Htc sync drivers and Superoneclick.
It worked the first time, just it doesn't put a custom recovery on your phone for you like some of the other rooting methods out there for lower firmware versions.
Searching threw the forums and trying many different methods to get the custom recovery installed, i failed. After awhile I was able to find a old rom manager apk that i was able to install and get cw recovery working with no issues.
After that i went on my mary flashing way for s-off, newer recovery found in dastin1015 sig, and the beautiful Zero Hero rom.

I downloaded the mistakenly flashed android 1.6 recovery image while trying to flash Cyanogen 4.1.999 . And I lost my root . Now I am unable to root my G1 by 1-click rooting process. When I run recovery Flasher, both the i am not able to backup the recovery image and install the new recovery image. Is there any way to root it.
I did a similar thing. You lost your recovery image, yes? I used downgrade-firmware method... DREAIMG.NBH+g1 root in a google search should get you started...or search the forums here sucks you got to start from scratch tho...there may be a way to downgrade to doughnut and try running the 1-click root app to restore a custom recovery image?
That means i need to downgrade to android 1.5 before being able to run Recovery Flasher.
Find a tutorial on the non 1 click root method and reflash a custom recovery image via the rc29 exploit...the power of google is in ur hands or at ur fingertips.
Look through the q&a's there is a pretty straight forward tutorial that gets you back to a rooted state.
you dont need to reroot your phone. look at the last few posts i made in the cyan 4.1.999 installation support thread in this section. it should get you where you need to go. if you need help, post there or pm me

You prolly fixed this already but in case someone else has this issue. Try installing Busybox from the market.
Same issue and won't boot into clockworkmod recovery

I rooted my phone with eclair installed and used clockworkmod recovery with no issues until I one day wanted to go back to stock and attempted a restore of the backup I made right before flashing the OverStock ROM. The phone wouldn't boot, so finally got the Overstock to go back. Phone worked fine for the most part, but from then on to get into recovery mode, required shutting down and using button presses (Up/down vol/PWR button) and it would go in fine. Could never get Clockworkmod to go into recovery mode with a click. Saw that (finally) Samsung has published a Froyo update, so took back to stock eclair using ODIN3 so I could use Kies mini to update. Did a factory reset to remove all old info directories and data. Update went perfect, but want the option to use the rooted apps (Titanium backup and ClockworkMod--purchased apps) to play with my phone as I see fit. Used SuperOneClick to root phone and verified I can get superuser with using terminal emulator, successfully executing "su" command. Problem is I can't get into CWM recovery. Only get "Android system recovery <3e>". Tried uninstalling CWM and reinstalling. Re-Flashed CWM recovery and it lists version 2.5.1.2 as current and latest.
I obviously need CWM recovery to flash different ROMS, but wanted a current backup before starting. Can't get any further until I figure this out. Any help would be appreciated. I was a noob, just a month ago, but was feeling pretty confident until this happened. Guess I'm still a noob, but just a little more dangerous now. Thanks in advance.
Just noticed that I wasn't in a phone specific thread, so here's my phone details... Samsung Vibrant (T-Mobile).
CWM issues with Milestone
In the last update of the RomManager was added support for version ClockWorkMod 3.x for Milestone - but still unable to use the CWM as standard recovery.
Using another recovery as OR1.4 you can start CMW from the SD card - but that does not solve the problem of RomManager stay with completely limited functions.
The Rom Manager is having updates constantly and I think we have a working version for Milestone soon - but in part I'm upset to see that the Milestone is listed as a supported device - when in fact it is not.
I bought the full version of Rom Manager because I believe it is a great tool and I hope someday I can use all its functions.
I have the same problem. I use OpenRecovery for Sholes to do those things. I hope we can use those tools like a normal user even a day.
Hi out there,
A friend of mine has got a milestone (gsm) and problems with flashing recovery and custom rom.
he says he has got root, but when he tries to flash recovery it says "no root rights" (via root console with su). moreover, his recovery is a .zip and not a .img which i was used to (am a htc hero owner). through not having custom recovery, he cant install custom roms, seems like no root on boot.
anyone can help? as the procedure on htc hero seems to be completely different i cant help him, will give him this link so he can see
thank you,

my captivate keeps rebooting when i try to go to recovery mode then boots into the os.. Can anyone help me fix this. I got one of the updated phones and flashed it back to 2.1 using odin
We need a little more information than that to figgure out what's wrong here. By updated model you mean it came with2.2? by booting into os do you mean 2.1 or 2.2 or whatever otehr slew of custom roms there are. And by recovery do you mean the stock recovery or clockwork?

It came with 2.2 but i rolled it back to 2.1 to root it now i cant enter my boot loader..btw i meant stock recovery
How are you trying? The button combo I assume right? sometimes odin one click breaks the button combo.
Use adb on your pc
Or a terminal emulator on your phone (may require root)
If rooted use rom manager.
I've successfully rooted my phone thanks to SuperOneClick, but am not able to figure out how to flash the recovery so that I can use ROM Manager.
I have a stock KB1 image, on an I897 Captivate from AT&T. I'm trying to get the recovery image (currently 3e) set so that I can bypass the signature check, which is what I keep running into.
I installed ROM Manager (the free one, at least until pay day) and tried to use that to flash CWM recovery. Every time I boot into recovery, I run into the confounded signature check.
I have a Superuser app installed from the Market, version 3.0.6(40) and su binary ver 2.3.1-ef.
I'm not typically a dunce, since I've been able to install and run a Linux server at home more than once. But this has got me stumped.
Please let me know what additional information I might need to provide to target guidance.
Read this. Please look at stickies and/or use the search function.
On a personal note, don't waste time on Rom Manager. Its trash for SGS line.
I hadn't seen that list previously. I spent 4 hours last night and three hours today reading stickies and stumbling through search results. That guide for fixing recovery might just be the answer I was looking for.
Is there a different "ROM manager" app that you recommend, or just bare-backing it (which I'm not afraid to do, either)?
Don't bother with it. IMO if you like stock froyo, I recommend just flashing Cognition 4.x.x. Based on KB2 stock looking, but tweaked for speed. CWM is easiest achieved by flashing a kernel with it baked in it.
to skip the recovery crap and rooting and everything else....
take phone out of box. (done)
download and run odin3 flashing util 1.8x Odin3v1.85.zip
boot phone into download mode
flash ginberbread bootloaders http://www.multiupload.com/QQ3LFSRBMD
reboot into download mode
flash custom kernel with CWM built-in pick one in dev section. ANY NOT miui/cm7 kernel in dev section.
reboot into recovery (cwm now!!)
mounts / usb/ copy rom to phone (if not on sdcard already can be done any time before)
cwm flash rom.
** cwm2 kernel for eclair/froyo roms & cwm3/4/5 kernel for gingerbread up
If you goal is to flash a new rom then TRusselo is right. Easier to just flash a kernel with CWM.
Rooted via super 1click and was unable to get clockwork recovery to load said it flashed but would only boot default recovery, soft bricked it 3 times then straight busted it getting the forced upload key press thing had to use USB jig to get download then used Odin to repair firmware some how 3g got switched off. Anyone got any ideas on how to switch back on my guess is key pad access but don't know the code amorphous smart apn from market but don't have the phone yet to try it my friend is gonna bring it this weekend just wanted to find out the best way to switch it back on before I get it back because grs gonna be there this time and I don't want to make him nervous or have him think I'm gonba mess up his phone

Stop flashing and read the stickies. If you tried using rom manager or update.zip it wont work unless you fix the 3e recovery issue. Its easier to flash a kernel with CWM baked in to it. For example if you are on froyo Cognition 4.x.x (search for it) kernel should work just fine.
