First off don't shoot me. I am interested in getting Gingerbread on my Captivate or another good rom. I have been on the forum for a few years but have never done amything to my phone until now. I just rooted it and installed Rom Manager and Titanium backup. I have been reading so many threads that my head is spinning. There are alot of different roms available but I have no idea of which to use. Can someone please point me in the right direction to put Gingerbread on my phone? I have had this phone for over a year and am ready for a change without having to buy a new phone. I have never flashed a phone before but I have built my own computer, so I am not a total newbe and am not affraid to try something new.
My phone:
Firmware 2.2
I897UCKB1
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Build Froyo.UCKB1
Rooted
Rom Manager
Titanium Backup

Figures another Texan would shoot me. Good thing I am wearing my bullet proof vest today.
Thanks!
Lol, its cool man....any of the ops in each rom are very detailed in how to flash. Designgears have a great Odin oneclick to stock that's a must have in case something get borked. The Fasty GB roms are my favorite choice. Any of the KH3 roms wont disappoint. Make sure you use the correct bootloaders too. Happy flashing!!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7287634 check this out here for back-to-stock info. I would try CM7 since you already have some experience with it. They have allot of info in their thread in the Dev forum. That is what I run and I like it because I didn't have to flash bootloaders and its one of the simplest to install. Is your captivate running stock 2.2?

Not difficult at all:
*download ODIN 1.81 on your pc
*download latest KI2 stock ginger rom from the dev forum
*back up your apps etc using titanium backup to external sd card
*perform factory reset on cappy
*open ODIN and place downloaded .tar file that u downloaded earlier in "PDA" section
*turn off phone and hold vol up&down while turning on to start download mode
*plug phone in usb cable hooked to computer
*say a small prayer, lol
*once connection is established, press start on ODIN
*when flash is completed phone will reset, u may unplug usb cable when u see the ATT screen on phone
*that's it, if your successful then u can perform root, which is done differently than 2.2, so be prepared, I can PM u or respond here to tell u how if your successful with the gingerbread flash.
Good luck, and remember, bootloaders will be flashed, so there is an outside chance to screw your phone, so proceed with caution.
If I use Titanium Backup then don't I need to be rooted in order to restore my apps and contacts?

Duh! Read the OP stupid! (Schizophrenic humor) Ok. Remember CM7 might not have the best battery life but I have always seen it as the least risky way to get GB running on the Captivate because you're not flashing bootloaders that are different from what you already have with stock 2.2 . The ONLY time I ever hard bricked was when attempting to flash GB bootloaders over Froyo bootloaders. Just be careful.

You have to be rooted to restore apps using titanium, not for contacts though.

Titanium Backup requires root to backup or restore anything.

I would be using Titanium to backup my contacts unless there is a better way. I have several groups in my contacts for work and personal ring tones for different groups. It would be a major pain to have to set them up again.

What I have always done is to export my contacts to the external sd card by using "import/export" function in the contacts app, not sure if it would have a impact on all of your settings though because I have always used a simple setup, single ringtone for everyone in my contacts. Just be prepared in case something doesn't work as expected. I have no experience with using titanium to backup the contacts.

Exporting the contacts is not an option since it will take a contact with multiple numbers and turn them into an indvidual one for each number. I have used AndroidSync Wifi to backup contacts and it seems to work pretty good. I have never used Titanium before so I am not sure how well it works with contacts.
The easiest way to back up your contacts is to save them to google. Lol. +1 on the KI2 rom, Flashed it a few days ago and it's amazing... I'm no longer tempted to cash in 80 hours of PTO to get the Galaxy SII tomorrow.

Do you know which thread has the current information on KI2? There are a lot of different threads. Thanks!
Never mind. This is getting to confusing. Some say you need a kernel and some don't. Then there is the Flash clockworkmod Recovery. Is this the same thing that is in Rom Manager? Do I get the full version of Rom manager and flash with that? Do you use Odin? Do you flash to stock? I am already running 2.2 rooted.Threads are 500-1000 pages long, some have old information, ect.............where is the most current updated information????? CM7 nightly builds?? Do you flash everyday? Is there a stable build? Ect.........

download link is in there, just stick the file in the pda slot in odin, put phone into download mode, and flash away... everything you need is in that file (bootloaders, kernel, etc).. it's the stock at&t leak, so it also has bloatware, but oh well.

Steve
I still have not flashed. Have been reading threads for hours and hours. So much information and so many Roms Here is what I would like, swipe, get all my contacts back in groups (important for work)and a good stable rom. Seems like each rom has its issues, GPS, download ability, speed of download, some media files not working, poor call quality, not getting text messages, ect......... I know that the developers don't like to recommend roms but with all the different roms and some threads being close to 1000 pages long, it is hard to tell what is considered stable and what is an alpha or beta and what is current. The information on my phone is below. Any help or suggestions to a few good roms with complete instructions would be appreciated. Is rom manager even an option for flashing?
I would understand if the mods close this thread but I am sure that I am not the only one overwhelmed by all this information. It is pretty amazing how many people contribute to the development of all the different Roms.
Thanks again for any help or guidance!
Okay first of all, I would like to apologize if this is being posted in the wrong forum, or if I am upsetting anybody by posting this. I have searched all over for a couple days trying to figure this out. This is my last resort, and I'm hoping you guys can help. All of your time and understanding is much appreciated!
So a little background. About a week ago, I rooted my AT&T Captivate 2.2(build number 1012 if that helps) using Superoneclick, and then flashed CM7.1 using clockworkmod. I was not satisfied with CM7.1(terrible battery for me, other various reasons). I then downloaded MIUI (not sure which version, the one available on the premium version of clockworkmod) and flashed it using clockworkmod. This started with the cm bootscreen, and then went to an MIUI bootscreen that played a little tune. The miui screen looped, and it would not go past this.
After rebooting and running into the same thing, I went to f\attempt to find a solution. I thought I backed up my rom, but it had been erased (issue with the external sd I think). I used an odin one click I found on here, but this odin one click brought me back to eclair 2.1, instead of 2.2. Up until now, I could get into both download and recovery mode using the three button method, and now I can't. I am not sure what to do exactly. I have read about getting it into download mode using adb, but I'm not sure if that would work in my situation, and I'm not too educated on adb or android sdk. I stayed up almost all night last night, and now have researched most of today, not making much progress.
Thanks again for your time!
Just to clarify have you used all button methods in order to try to get into download mode. Seems as though flashing bootloaders may have f'ed up you combos. I have a couple suggestions. I'll edit my post as I find the urls to post for you
Stock GB ROM you should be using -- http://www.mediafire.com/?05nemq5yyn5fuqf, this one has bootloaders, but preferably you should use stock odin roms that don't mess with the BL's (after this of course, since yours are messed up right now).
Now of course this depends upon you getting into download mode. If you can use ROMmanager (btw, I don't recommend you download your roms from rommanager, as that will not always be the most up to date and may not be the one for you) to get into recovery mode, then from there go to advanced then reboot download. However some kernels do not support this. Try the cable methods before trying this method.
First of all, I appreciate your help Mikel.canovas. I have used all the button methods. I can no longer get into recovery or download. (Romtoolbox enables me to get into recovery(2E), but not download). I now have root access, but am not able to sideload apps, and apparently rommanager free isn't available on the market. I did buy rommanager premium, but unfortunately now that I basically reset my phone, it doesn't show up as bought (known issue, apparently not resolved?), and even after I bought it again, it says I need the free version to even use the premium version.
Should I go through the process to be able to sideload apps? Or will romtoolbox do the trick? Rom toolbox gives me the option to install a rom from my sd card. Should I use that, and select the GB ROM you provided? I'm not sure I understood exactly how you want me to get that GB ROM onto my phone.
What I want to eventually have is either MIUI or rom fasty on my phone. If possible, could you give me some steps on how to reach that goal?
Thanks again for your time. Eclair on the captivate is not pleasant, especially since I had a taste of CM.
Well first off I highly recommend Mosaic over CM or Fasty, solely because of performance and battery life. However that is all subjective.
Ah since you're rom is sending to 2E recovery, you're not rooted with cwm. You need to flash another kernel that supports this. Afterwards, If you can get into CWM, I recommend putting CM onto your sdcard and flashing from there. After booting into CM hold down the power button, press reboot, choose reboot download. See if that works. If not, does adb reboot download work for you? If not again, I recommend trying another USB port, reinstalling drivers, trying different button combos. I've had issues getting into download mode in the past and, trust me, it is VERY frustrating.
Well first of all, before you back into flashing stuff, don't flash to stock unless you have done everything possible with the tools on your phone. I'm assuming you gave it at least 5 minutes to boot up, as the first boot can variably take longer. You could go into recovery and wipe stuff, or you could have gone back to CM7. A flash to stock is probably never necessary in the situation you reported.
Anyway, if you can get into recovery, maybe try getting a kernel that allows you to reboot into download from recovery. Although that will depends on what kernel you are on right now, as I know speedmod kernel has that option, but you would need to get to download to flash that.
And as another poster wrote, have you tried all button combinations?

Or download SGS Kernel Flasher from the market. You can then flash kernels with the app. without having to go into download mode. Very handy.
Once again guys, thank you for your time. A little more information:
Kernel:
2.6.29

Baseband:

Let me know if you need any other information.
I am able to get into download mode using the terminal emulator in rom tool box. (The free version of rom manager is no longer on the market)
I was hoping one of you could give me a step by step of what I need to do, with links to downloads.
And yes, I have tried all off the three button methods. Also, I probably should have researched more before I flashed back to stock.

Oh, and miui won't really give you better battery life than CM7. It basically is CM7 with a different UI. I loved CM7 a ton, so if you are having issues with it, let me know! With the right kernel and other settings, battery life is pretty decent, as long as you charge nightly.

What is the build number of your phone? It's located under your battery, looks something like 10.06,10.07, 10.08 and so on
Alright, thank you, I will be checking back tomorrow.
Eventually what I want is to have the working 3 button combos again for both download and recovery mode, and either the miui, mosaic or rom fasty on my phone.
Easy flash GB BL's and you won't have to worry about 3 button problems!
If you didnt do a Master Clear, now would be the time. Make sure you back up anything you want to keep. MC will erase EVERYTHING on your internal SD
Remove your Micro SD, and your SIM
Download:
OneClick Root
SideLoadWonderMachine This also has CWM, 3ButtonFix and ROM Manager in the zip
Make sure you have Debugging enabled
Connect to your PC
Run One Click Root, and follow the instructions, reboot
Run Sideload Wonder Machine and direct it to install ROM Manager
Copy the update.zip(CWM) and 3Button Fix to your phone
Open ROM manager and "reboot to recovery"
You'll go thru the boot twice to get to CWM
In CWM install the 3 Button Fix
I usually pop out the battery and check it before I put the ROM in.
VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! DO NOT TRY TO USE THE 3ButtonFix while you have a GB ROM installed you WILL brick your phone. It only works on 2.1, and 2.2 ROM's
using this one click package I now am able to manually enter download and recovery :

However, The recovery is still 2e..

1012, do you think any of my problems would have to do with the build number? WHen I got it, it had froyo with the working button combinations.
Sorry, I didn't see that until now.

So can I delete this thread? And if so, should I? I've found plenty of threads that seem outdated, and fill up the search engine.

The only reason I asked about the build # is because the 10.08's were pretty commonly known to have 3 button issues. Also, anything above 1012 and using Odin1 Click could soft brick. I was just checking as I was offering info

Yep. Because these are Odin or Heimdall One Clicks.
You can't just flash to a GB firmware/rom from Eclair/Froyo without using Odin or Heimdall to at least get the Gb Bootloaders. You cannot just go through CWM recovery unless u already have the GB Bootloaders.
Of course u can get it all through mini Kies, the official GB 2.3.5 KK4 update that is.
hello
im on 2.3.6 now and fancy a change because when i click phone or messages it keeps closing and its starting to do my head in.
which rom should i go for?
could you guys point me in the direction of a good guide were i can flash with odin.
iv flashed both my phones a few times but im still a noob
thanks guys/girls
CyanogenMod (7) was fairly simple to flash and it was my first rom on the phone. I'm currently on Team ICSSGS' rom -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398223
The latest release was pulled pending wifi fixes, but I'm using it and it's working great for me.
Just need to be rooted and running CWM to flash it.
was looking at that before
ill wait till they fix it and put it back up
how do i flash it.
i dont have a clue i only know how to use odin. and to be honest i think my 3 year old son could work it lol
does anyone know a good rom that i can flash with odin no messingvaround that looks something like this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460786&highlight=2+3+6
just looking for something a little different but stalble as well
I think for the majority of the roms now you need to be rooted and have CWM installed. CM7 is a very nice rom, and not hard to install. It runs 2.3.7 iirc, and worked great for me.
Wiki for installing:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide
i flashed my phone with another rom but didnt like it so i flashed it back to the value pack 2.3.6 jvu and then rooted it with this http://www.androidauthority.com/root-galaxy-s-gt-i9000-android-2-3-6-xxjvu-48441/
but i cant uninstall all the stock apps with super manager app. last time i flashed it i could do it. but didnt use that guild and cant find it now.
so as its not rooted i cant flash with the one you have mentioned
is jvz better?
I never ran 2.3.6, I went right from a stock update at 2.3.1 (iirc) to the 2.3.7 in CM7. You should just install CWM using Odin, do a full backup using Titanium Backup and a Nandroid backup in CWM. Then flash anything you want to try.
Also, for backing up contacts, I've read not to use Titanium, use an SMS/Contacts Backup... Titanium has worked for me though.
Not bothered about backing my stuff up. only need my contacts there on kies
might try a flash with clocks recovery when i get home.
i like the rom im on but i doont have full root access as i cant delete atock apps like i could before. i need to delete them to change file format to exr4. says i dont have room if i don't delete them
I all ready have cwm so do.i.just download the cm7 zip file and extract it on my internal memory card then reboot into cwm and flash
Oops double post
Flashed it but it runs really really skow looks good tho.
search continues ha ha
Kies still connects to your phone with custom roms and such? I was lucky if it worked with the stock firmwares.
Did you do a full data wipe? CM7 ran pretty quick on my phone. Maybe try SetCPU to speed things up a little.
Titanium with root access can remove stock apps too.
ye i did a full wipe.
i tried clocking it to 1200 and still ran slow.
ICS ran a little slow as well.
flashed a few now with cwm getting quite addictive.
would like to try a few more but mega uploads comes up with some security thing saying its been removed blah blah blah
MegaUpload was shut down a little while ago now. Should be lots of Roms listed in the forums here, with active downloads I would hope.
Thought I wasnt such a noob but appearantly I am.
Went from stock 2.1 on Captivate to Serendipity 5.x then later to 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4 No hickups, havn't messed with it since. Finally decided to upgrade to slim ICS.
after a ton of hickups, finally got CM7 on the phone just to get stuck in a bootloop. Tried wipes (Dalvik, system, cache) as recommended on forums and got stuck on splashscreen. After trying tons of stuff ended up with stock 2.3.4. , which is now rooted. and after scouring the forums have no idea where to go from here.
I tried Rom Manager & RM Premium (I selected i9000 as I am guessing that is the corrrect one for captivate) to get CWM but the CWM flash install failed, so I just refunded it
Where am I now?

Depending on how you ended up at 2.3.4, you may need different drivers in order for Odin to see your phone.
I used Heimdall after an unsuccessful update from Slim 2.7 to 2.8 and had to use Heimdall to get out of a similar bootloop. It left me without CWM and a computer that cannot detect my phone.
Since Heimdall worked but I knew I needed CWM, I found a Heimdall package from Apex that contained CWM (post #3, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843).
Not sure this address your needs but hopefully it will help

I used Heimdall after an unsuccessful update from Slim 2.7 to 2.8 and had to use Heimdall to get out of a similar bootloop. It left me without CWM and a computer that cannot detect my phone.
Since Heimdall worked but I knew I needed CWM, I found a Heimdall package from Apex that contained CWM (post #3, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843).
Not sure this address your needs but hopefully it will help

This is where I found it:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3
Once you open the package, it flashes the ROM the first time through and then gives you the option of flashing gingerbread bootloaders on a second flash. I did not flash bootloaders since I was already on gb. The ROM itself, Apex 12.4, is actually pretty good.
Based on my experiences recently, ending the bootloop, solving a softbrick, and upgrading to CWM (thanks AdamOutler!, I actually am less nervous about using Heimdall than I am Odin but it just does not seem to be as popular as Odin. The major drawback of Heimdall is the different drivers.
Good luck.
OMG i got the biggest scare, after attempting to flash the kernel it got stuck in the 'establishing connection' stage. After 30 mins I pulled the plug to make another attempt. I got a screen I have never seen before:
had a computer and a phone pic with big yellow letters:
"Upgrade attempt Failed. Try recovery mode"
no problem. Hold volume buttons, power on.... same screen. 3 times same thing. OK no problem lets try download mode, same thing. After some googling I finally found a similar poster that basically said the screen actually serves AS a download mode, and that he tried 6 times before the flash took. I got mine after 3 more attempts.
Tried to flash slimICS from there, failed and aborted..
So, from here I guess it is mandatory to flash CM7? or do i have to go to 2.3.5 first?

I cannot answer that question about needing CM7 or 2.3.5.
I know that I went to Slim ICS from Fusion ICS without any problems. The procedure for Fusion seemed tailored to their ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233979). I remember being a little nervous about "pull battery at android and triangle screen..." but it worked out fine.
I have to decide whether or not to go the Fusion route or this way (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22335637&postcount=10).
OK, I finally got it installed, OMG it's amazing ^^
To answer my own questions for anyone else it may help.
No, you don't need to go to 2.3.5. I just went to CM7 (build 16) and that gave me the rest of the updates I needed to jump to slim ICS 2.8
Thank you for all your help !
..now to spend the next week going through settings lol

Just wait until you discover the addiction of trying a new ROM. Because it "might"be better, or faster, or have cool options or themes... ...... ..... aaaaahhhhh I needed help!!

If you had read my instructions, would hav e been simpler. It said, coming from GB rom, flash TeamHacksung build 16, then mine. done.
About a week or more ago I downloaded 1987UCKK$ and Corn kernel v705. I flashed them both on my phone (AT&T samsung captivate) and my husbands phone (same). All went well and we love it.
My question is on our sdcard (internal) two files were placed:
ICS 4.0.0 captivate Full zip and ICS captivate update.zip
I have been looking to upgrade to ICS for the captivate and would like to know if I can use these files to do so through CWM??? If so, which one do I use or do I use them both. Any instructions on the order of use would be appreciated...
Thanks
gramme
right now I am runing AT&T Captaivate GB 2.3.5
1897UCKK4
corn kernel 705

My suggestion would be that, if a file was placed on your SDcard that you're not aware of, and aren't sure where you go them from.. and ESPECIALLY if you don't have instructions when you download them, DONT USE THEM. I'm biased, so I'll point you toward my rom. Take a look here, it's ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1813917
However, if you take a look around the Android Development forums, there's quite a few roms on there. :]
Agreed...delete those zips...just because of not knowing what they are. And just go with the ICS Rom of your choice and it's specific install instructions in it's OP.

Gosh, this looks like an awesome rom...I found the rooting thing. Titanium wasn't opening and while I was looking around the new interface I found PERMISSIONS>manage ROOT permissions...and all is working fine now....got a lot to learn but I love to do that.
Thank you for suggestion this rom....
Have a great day
I need some help...after putting on my titanium backup of apps&data I restarted..
Now all kinds of errors messages...
exchange service stopped
android.process.media stopped
and others
email will NOT work
what should I do?
I am thinking about installing a cloud rom to see if that will work
My about phone is saying I9000 UGKCI
and I think it should say 1897UCKBI
I used the link that was given to me in the post above installed MIUI 2.8.3...
Please can someone advise me at this point?
Thanks
Start from scratch and re install. When you restore from titanium backup restore apps only. Not system apps. System app or system data will break your phone.
Also, the i9000 is the baseband. Essentially telling you what modem the phone is from. It is cosmetic. If you have any further questions ask in my thread so I can assisy
