[WOEZ] ICS Radio Problems - Motorola Droid Bionic

Just wanted to toss this out and see what other people are experiencing.
I just updated my wifes bionic to 905 --> 2233
then from 905 --> 230
Everything worked pretty well on 2233 with AOKP for about a week then things started getting really iffy with all the radios.
The device itself would never connect to 3g, 4g or even voice and would always say no service.
I spent some time working with it and trying to get 905 with AOKP to work but for some reason the phone app kept force closing.
With the 230 update all radios would behave erratically and not hold a connection for very long.
Has anyone else experienced problems similar to this?
If you have, did you find a workaround?
Can't wait for ICS but if it means I have a really expensive paperweight I would rather not.
What are your experiences?

Radio on 230
The only thing funny was it took 2 boots for my radio to work with 230 after flashing. That tells me a caching issue but who knows.

No issues at all for me on .230 rock solid here in southern alabama.

Same for me here in western ohio.

I'm on 229. It took a few minutes to connect to Verizon on first boot but I haven't had any radio problems once it did and good signal/download speeds.
The biggest problem is occasional UI freezes and stuttering in browsers when scrolling for me, seems like it may be graphics buffer related. I'm actually amazed at how fast and fluid everything is for the most part otherwise.

no radio issues here other than the heartattack on the first couple boots where it said no service the first time coming from .905 to .229 yesterday. Ran good just used Samuri's script to go to .230 without pulling my hair out this is the best my Bionic has ever been honestly

Huh, well I am glad the community out there is having such good luck.
While it was working it was great, when it wasn't it made me want to jump from the top of a place very high.
How long have you all been running the leak builds? With my test it was mostly 2233 for about a week and a half before things started to act really odd.

Is Galaxy S that bad?

Hi,
I own my galaxy for like 3 weeks now.
The first 2 weeks I was running stock 2.2.1, and had sudden reboots (it even entered into safe mod once I was sleeping and woke up from the sound the phone was doing), force closes.
So I decided and installed deodexed stock rom with speedmod kernel (+lagfix and recommended tweaks), and I feel that my phone is still bad. Angry birds keeps freezing the phone, wifi errors, and I can't run my phone more than 50hrs of uptime, it either will randomly reboot or as it happens today simply turns it self off and wont let me to turn in on (or getting into recovery/download mode).
When this phone was out everybody said its awesome (fast, stable etc) and I waited for prices to get down, now when I finally got it I think that I made a mistake.
Is anybody else frustrated with their phone? Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I should I hope that samsungs gingerbread will fix this? Or
maybe I should try custom rom like Darky or CM7?
Maybe all smartphones sucks and I dont know it because I never had a smartphone before?
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!
is it a new or used one mate ??????
i had it for 1 year now its the best
Its a new one of course.
Are you running any custom rom/kernel?
the beauty of SGS and Android is the continuous evolution of the ROMs you install...
I tried many different ROMs , and I am sure you would finally find something that will make you happy with the machine...
for a start, if you are on 2.2.1, get Darky 9.5 and you wont be disappointed.
Your phone is faulty. I had the device on stock froyo for 4 months after buying it and I never had random reboots or wifi issues.
Definitely take it back. I've modded mine so many times and still looks new to me. Had mine since January of this year.

@kauh1970 Thanks for the support!
@Furry Atom, very supportive, however I do start to think that something might be wrong with my phone. On other hand, that might be some application that causes the problems.
@alluliwi, Sorry my English is not that good, what do you mean by "take it back"?
Thanks!

By take it back, he meant to send the phone back for repairs or replacement under warranty to Samsung.
I have no problem with my phone, the only thing i dont like is the free ram available... seem low to me
@timelessfahad Thanks for clearing that up.
@vanvn297 You are running a stock 2.2.1 ROM?
Hi,
I recently updated via kies from stock 2.1 to stock 2.2 HVJP4.
So far I'm not impressed with the stock froyo rom. It's often sluggish and apps, especially email from exchange, crash reguarly.
I have not experienced any problems with wifi or 3g reception however.
I'm still trawling the forum, trying to find all the info and confidence to backup the current rom and try something different, but there's a good chance a stock gingerbread rom will appear before that happens. Hopefully it will address some of these problems. Fingers crossed

Gingerbread works fine
The issue with wifi is pretty known from what I looked (strange thing it never happened on the stock samsung rom only started to happen on deodexed stock with speedmod kernel).
The other thing my original rom was XXJPY and I flashed a deodexed XXJPY so maybe the rom it self is not that good. Gonna try XXJVH/XXJVB deodexed with Demian kernel probably, or will try Darky ROM (also considering CM7).
More replies about your satisfaction with galaxy s will be happily accepted!
Thanks.

in my opinion cm7 has gotten to the point that there is no reason not to install it... its litterally just a single zip now after you have rooted and put cwm on you're phone. the battery is fine, the photo/video is fine (although the samsung camera is way better... panoramic pics ftw) wifi/data is fine/ no need for lagfix/ and its constantly being updated..
edit: actually I think the battery might be better than what I was getting on darky 9.5...
i have been frustrated about my sgs for the first month until i discovered the rom world
usally the stock rom comes bloated with **** and uneeded stuff wich makes the phone slower and many other useless things...(i think)
i am still kind of new to all this and there is so much info do some reading and see how your sgs can be a beast
I too am not feeling the awesomeness of the Galaxy S. My friend got his one when it came out and its hard to believe this is the same phone I thought of as awesome all that time.
I got it new last week, and experiencing quirky behavior that really makes me feel like I'm using a low-mid class phone, and made me completely unenthusiastic/ not inclined with moving to the new phone which is how it should be. I even used my old Motorlla V8 for days after I got the SGS cos I was so unimpressed.
Poor camera, reception, crashes, dropouts, low wi fi signal, stutters, not responding to taps etc, really clunky loose volume button that makes it feel cheap, cheap sounding speaker. And I haven't installed anything on it except quadrant standard, and that crashes sometimes too.
To elborate a little. As far as comparable qualities go, compared to my Motorolla V8, The reception and voice quality is poor. Same network same simcard, I get half the signal, during a call it will sometimes dropout or make that guitar like noise, whereas my V8 never did any of that.
Even when I am next to a wi fi router. It doesn't show full wi-fi signal. Not even at my friends house. It reaches nowhere near as much as any laptop I have had.
I gotta compare these attributes to my friends sgs.
What I have compared so far is the camera, which is much worse on mine, You can see the thread here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081453
The AMOLED screen is also a lot dimmer, and cant display white as pure white but a grey/blue tint. Same settings max brightness.
For example quadrant standard, the spinning DNA like helix test. His background is pure snow white, mine is an off blue/grey dim white.
We also compared speakers, same song. His one has stronger clearer sounds, its quite noticable. All in all I'm wondering If I should replace my phone within the 14 day period.
I already took it back one about the camera issue to where I got it and the guy said its fine, so I would really have to go to Vodaphone or samsung directly to get a new one, which I did, and they said go to a repair centre. Even if they even have stock, it could be the same problems. And I would have to prove all these grey area problems.
Anyway check out my other thread as well and apply the Spectrum or Waveform Wallpaper. I wonder if its glitching here, but I think its most likely normal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086257
I will try upload a vid soon.
I am using my sgs now for 2 month, and i have to say its a great phone.
But its only great if you flash it.
In my opinion stock roms by Samsung are not fast enough,
full with useless apps and many tweaks like voodoo sound and gps fixes are missing.
(Tested 2 SGS from different providers, both roms not usable)
Try Darkys rom as also mentioned on page one.
There are many roms, and not all of them are bugfree and stable.
You have to remember the programmers arent payed for their work.
If you still have wifi problems uing darkys rom, your phone is damaged.
You probably need to start afresh.
Reflash a stock rom (ie. JPU which is a fill rom), then update to stock gingerbread. There shouldn't be many bugs at all.

I finally plucked up the courage to do exactly that.
I'm now running JVH with a CF rooted kernel and the phone is now performing close to what I hoped for.
Secondary boot loaders have also been fixed and I'll admit I held my breath during that flash.
Thanks to everyone here for providing the info I needed and making great roms.

Ive had mine since day 1 and its been amazing. No latency issues, wifi/data works perfectly, stable, no fc's(force closes), and the display is perfect. It seems they've gotten fairly "cheap" with the manufacturing of the newer, more recent models being shipped.
Love this phone... BUT, im still going to trade it in for an SGS2

6.7.242 ics

A new build has leaked. Same security as 235/238 so no ability to fxz to 905 if you install it. Confirmed that it's still rootable. I've added a support file to my house of Bionic for it but don't recommend installing it if you're 232 or lower. I'm hoping this means soak within 3 weeks. We shall see.

GRRR... These new leaks come out and I can't enjoy them. Its like watching all the other kids get ice cream except me. Haha.. no pun intended. I hope the soak test has started cause I'm tired of waiting and sitting on .232. Oh well, still better then being on .905
It's wise to wait. And no, soak should be 2-3 weeks. We hope.....
I am just curious if there is any noticeable difference from any of the earlier builds in 242. Hopefully this will be the official OTA and we can start looking forward to Jelly Bean leaks.....
That literally made me LOL. I didn't have any issues myself with any of the 235/238 leaks but I do know of at least one bug in smart actions that they hopefully fixed. I haven't had a chance to test it myself. Supposedly the big reason this build was done was for flash but someone was reporting issues with that already. I just pray it's OTA so we can get a new FXZ.
Personally I am still on 232 and will be here till the official update hits. Overall it works very well but every now and then it slows to almost a grinding halt for a few seconds. I've also had other random bugs such as media audio failing to work and Chrome hanging when its first opened if I try to scroll down a site too early.
I've had the media audio bug as well and it is quite annoying....
Would there not be some notice if a soak test had started?
Yes. It won't start over Labor Day weekend. I'm hearing rumors that they may fast track this thing though and soak as early as next weekend. I have my doubts. I'm figuring 2-3 weeks out at the earliest. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong on that....in the positive not negative side of that equation.
Just darn happy to see anything new trickle out. Has been darn quiet lately.
Any sign that a soak might be close is welcome!
Agreed!

That is the main thread for HoB. The current links are always in the OP of that thread. Right now you get the 5.4 installer, 1.0 COMPONENTS, and whatever update/s you want support for (232, 235, 238, and 242 currently available).

I am sticking with 232 as well & see those exact same symptoms -- and even with them, it's the best the phone has been since launch.
Those that stuck with 232 are pretty smart to do so. Best of both worlds. You get to play with ics while waiting for the ota. And when that comes out you have more choices. Either fxz back to 905 and start clean with the ota or those that don't want to lose data and apps can come see me in the house of Bionic and will be able to move forward from 232 without data loss. Gotta love options!

not knowing the changelog, what is really fixed or updated or added, of new leak roms is the only thing bothers me
242 fixes all the known bugs from 238 that we've seen. I don't remember them all but there's a smart action bug if creating a rule using location that was fixed. Supposedly flash will work better now. And there was one more that I can't think of off the top of my head. So far I don't believe any new bugs have been found.
Sorry if this is a newb question but im reading about this leak everywhere and can't find it anywhere. Please help. I'm on .235 and would like 242

Please read fully. Links are in the post.
Some 242 testing:
Flash is much improved, with one caveat. If you used HoB and kept data, uninstall and reinstall flash. It is still available to download from the market, if you go via adobe's site on the web. Also, go into the Flash Settings and clear local content.
If we get word that this is the official ota, I will probably wipe data and start fresh any way.
Motocast says this device is unsupported (had the same issue on 238).

Lagging since JB update

So anyone else lagging since the JB upgrade. My phone is running like its got the molasses ROM installed. Everything is running sloooow. From opening apps, typing etc. I've tried all of the other JB ROMS but need Car dock running so can't really use them. Guess I could factory reset, but worried about my tenacious grip on root. I'v been thinking about jumping the Motorola ship and getting myself an S4. Then I have to start from scratch on all my docks Plus who knows when they will be fully in stock.
So really just need to streartch out the Bionic for a few more weeks.
I haven't experienced anything of the sort :3

Ditto here. With stock ICS my Bionic was very tolerable. Once I took the JB update, which I assumed would mean it would be even better, it was RIDICULOUSLY laggy. Everything you said, opening apps, typing, freeze ups. Went on a search for how to root and install a rom. Got rooted, tried blurry, was almost as bad as the stock JB with the lag, tried flyingjelly briefly. It looked decent, but I didnt give it a very long trial as I then found liquidsmooth. And the name does live up to its billing. My rooted bionic on liquidsmooth has been running very, very good. But my next upgrade, which Im due right now, will be an S4

Do a factory data reset. You won't lose root (root lives in system partition). It will clear up your lag. Then like voodoo said, slap liquidsmooth on it and be on your merry way. No need for this silly S4 talk...

Phones slow after JB Update

My phone is frustratingly slow after the update. I've tried some of the ROMS that were built for it but those are bad as well. Is it just me or is everyone's phone this slow? Sometimes it'll take like 5 seconds to open an app or go from the lock screen to an app. Im super bummed because I really like'd how well the phone ran with ICS.

I had the exact same experience. With ICS it was pretty smooth, after the OTA to JB it sucked, bad. I tried a handful of roms, none that seemed that great. Until I came across the liquidsmooth one here. Thats what Im running now, no complaints at all. Fast, responsive, super customizable. Give it a look if you havent already.
Agree with voodoodaddy I had the same issue and liquid smooth 2.4 is so far the fastest, most stable, full functioning ROM out there. Just remember to install it on ROM slot 3
Is the phone running at 1.2 by default? If so you might want to drop it down to 1.0 and try it for a while

Are you talking about the clock speed? It's completely stock (w/root) I haven't screwed with any hardware settings at all.
Even LTE is slow. Im on YouTube right now and it's buffering ever 20 second or so.
My bionic is also frustratingly slow. The stock ROM does an incredibly terrible job of managing background tasks and memory usage. I would switch roms but I have all these motorola accessories that typically don't work on anything but a stock rom. It's really awful. Unless some real changes are made this will be my last Motorola device. Samsung has really stepped up their game and I see no reason to go with someone else.

The reason I asked was because in certain phones when the ota ICS they bumped up the click speed to 1.2. I found on mine the phone couldn't handle that bump and it suffered similar to what your describing until I took it back down to 1.0

Y'all can also try doing a FDR (factory data reset). Been known to help with some after an upgrade. You won't lose root.
Before I updated to JB I FXZ'd to stock ICS. So I would imagine that would kick me back down to 1.0 no?
As I typed my response I realized I should just check rather then ask...so I DL'd no frills and sure enough it was at 1.2. So I bumped it back to 1.0. We'll see what happens.
Thanks
Let us know, since ICS I've been running under clocked and using CPU Sleeper. Been getting great battery life and no problems
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
I am having the same problems, apps slow to load, serious lag when typing, etc... I just checked and I am running at 1 GHz too. Battery life went from 10 hours on ICS to 7 on JB. I recently rooted but I was having these issues when everything was all stock.
How long have you had your Bionic? This is about the time the batteries starts dying and that can cause problems too

So after making the change to 1.0 for a few days that appears to have been my problem. Phone is running much better.

I've had it - going back to ICS

Well I'm fed up with this Jelly bean garbage! For you that say certain ones (Liquid smooth seems common) are 'fast', you're only kidding yourself.
JB on the bionic is terrible. It lags and is buggy (on after market's at least). I give props to the developers who have spent time making it usable for the most part.
I'm going back to ICS roms.
I had the same problem for a while. It wasn't until after I flashed Blurry JB after the third time did it work lag free. I had no idea what was going on but I just followed the advice of the developers and deleted the slot 1, wiped everything and reinstalled it.

You seem to think all bionic users share your experience. Not true. My bionic running JB stock rom & kernel, rooted gives great performance and a better user experience than ICS. Mine is fast and stable with no lag. Your blanket criticisms miss the mark for most.

Have you even looked at the threads in the development section? It's pretty clear the lag issue is common and I am not alone. There are always a few exceptions to a blanket statement, thanks for pointing it out though.

I certainly agree that some percentage of users experience lag or other problems and I don't doubt that you are one of them. Not sure what that percentage is though. I did an FDR after the JB update and clear cache once in a while. I sync manually and turned off Google Now, but use Voice Search extensively. Various settings, sync options, location services and some apps can cause problems that have little to do with the rom.

I'll try and update it to JB then I suppose. Thanks for the tip.
I get 2-10 second lags when doing a lot of tasks.
I have been reluctant to go from my extremely functional ICS based bionic running Icarus HD Remix to JB. I have not seen any post that convinces me to make the jump.
I have JB on my tablet, my wife has it on her Samsung S3, and my phone as it is kicks butt.
Why should I upgrade from stable to JB??
Thanks anyone with constructive responses.

I deleted all my partitions (slots), uninstalled safestrap, did a Full data reset/cache wipe. Downloaded and installed JB stock (OTA). Then installed safestrap and Liquid Smooth and it is still super laggy.
It'll be fine for a few swipes/screens then all of the sudden you go to open an app or go to the homescreen and it takes forever (5+ seconds). I've also had it reboot once randomly tonight as well as freeze with nothing on the screen but the 4 lights on the bottom lit up.
I dunno what else to do. Maybe it's time to start looking at new phone.
Well good news. One of the guys at work broke his phone last night and wants to upgrade to an S4. Since we have insurance on it, all I have to do is pay $100 and I get brand new S3...should be in tomorrow. :good:
I reformatted my phone twice, and i got heavy lag after a long while. Something was definitely up with JB. GB was fine, ICS got a bit worse, JB is just completely unusable with lag.
A emergency phone call will lag for 60 seconds (absolutely unacceptable), as well as sending messages. Keyboard pops up after 10 seconds, typing a simple sentence takes over a minute, and sending just barely responds. Although chrome is known to be pretty slow compared to browsers, it was also completely unusable for 90 seconds of lag from opening the app to retrieving search results.
I killed off a lot of apps, as well as clear out images/messages, and other cache/data things. But still, it crawled like a slug.
I gave up yesterday, and just installed CM10.1 . Already, I feel relieved that I don't feel restricted by anything. Bionic is in the RC stage for cm10.1. It does all of the necessary things flawlessly so far. I suggest everyone hwo's having slowdown issues with this stock bloatware to move over to CM or some custom rom. Keep FAR FAR away from it.
For now, i feel like I have a completely new phone since GB, and it is keeping up with the responsiveness of my Nexus 7.
But, if you are very inclined on staying on stock: I'm not sure what will help you speed it up again, other than completely wiping it again and reformatting.
Mine was still laggy even on aftermarket roms (JB).
I have it listed on craigslist now since I'm rocking an S3 since last Friday.
No lag on this bad boy.:victory:
I've been using FlyingJelly and it's great! My wife is stock JB and she has no complaints either.
Lag caused by the Overclocking?
In another thread, someone suggested that the lag many bionic users experienced could be fixed by clocking the CPU back down from 1.2 to 1 GHz. I tried this using the CPU Control under ROM Toolbox and I have found this worked for my phone, although I haven't found a way to make it permanent (it seems to change back to the 1.2 GHz setting, most of the time when trying to download something over a bad wifi or 4G connection). But it has helped with the frustration to know that when it lags, I will find the setting just needs to be changed back.
I am on ICS, running Icarus remixed or whatever it is called, and everything works.
My phone is tweaked and customized and runs great.
I have not seen any posts that answer my prior question: what is the benefit of switching to Jellybean when my phone works great right now?

thanks. I've always been on the edge with this phone, loading leaked upgrades, roms, etc. but now that it works nicely, I'm sticking with ICS & Icarus remixed. overclocked...
I wish I could go back to ICS. JB hasn't been able to keep my underclock at 600 and keeps resetting it back to 300.
