CM ROMs getting too heavy? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright guys, first let me make this absolutely clear I'm not trying to bash Cyanogen I am only asking if others have similar experiences or if maybe there is something I can do to resolve my own issues with CM roms and hey, if there appears to be some recurring thread possibly help them out.
During CM7 I didn't really have many problems in regards to speed.. CM7 was at least as snappy as any other randomly picked rom. Even if I updated nightly to the newest nightly. If I had a problem, flash back and everything was good to go.
When CM9 rolled out at first it was alright especially because I was very accepting of quirks in alpha roms and up. After a while though, my phone just seemed "slower" eventually I just found a stable enough version and stuck to it since it worked "well enough" but, it never really felt complete.
Flash forward to yesterday when I tried an unofficial CM10 alpha rom with "none of the frills" and now my phone is moving faster and over all smoother than it has possibly ever moved. I've been wondering if anyone had similar experiences or heck even the opposite experience and had any idea as to why it's happening.
Even after reinstalling almost all the same apps that I'd use on a daily basis, I find that the alpha "no-frills" CM10 is still running more smoothly than any version of CM9 I tried.
A

I am finding that CM10 has currently been much more enjoyable to have than the versions of CM9 that I have been trying out. But since I've only had CM10 on my phone for only a day, I don't know if I can give much criticism on the issue. It has been, however, the first ROM that I've flashed that I have actually done clean (wiped all data), so that could have helped speed things up...

Unofficial nightlies?????????????

I dunno I seem to remember there being Nightly's and stable releases. Now we have Unofficial Nightly's. Why? This isnt going to continue is it? Eventually we will get back to just Nightly's and Stable right? Not that its a big deal just seems unnecessary.
As I look through the threads I see there are a good number of people running these Unoffical Nightlys so maybe someone can explain to me the difference between Official and Unofficial. Are they that bad that they cant be official? If they are that bad why are so many people running them? Seems to reason that the unofficial is stable enough so cant we just make them official for god sakes. I mean really whats the worst that can happen? Its not like Cyanogen is going to be sued. Its already assumed that official nightlys are not going to be stable so whats the problem?
Official is being built by the Cyanogen servers and released at their discretion. The unofficials are users creating their own builds (usually with modifications) and being released separately.
That being said, CM7 has been in development for a while so there are both nightlies and stable releases. CM9 is still in early development, and Cyanogen team hasn't been releasing nightlies yet. The ones you see are users releasing it on their own.
You're either not very smart or a terrible reader. Unofficial simply means private individuals are taking it upon themselves to regularly post private builds that they made themselves, for others to take for a test drive. Official builds would come directly from CM, which has not happened yet.
Get a clue.
Perhaps your highness would be kind and gracious enough to direct us to a place where we could read that explanation (assuming, of course, that we can read such lofty material)..
Tongue firmly in cheek.. but.. hey Dude.. lighten up.

Yep those are the only two possible reasons for me not knowing whats going on.

I'm kind of confused due to your confusion
What "Unofficial Nightly's" and "Official Nightly's" you are seeing?
Don't tell me that you are confusing the Official Nightly's of CM7 and the Unofficial Nightly's of CM9.
Two different things.
Im sorry! Im trying to keep up with the development of the Nook Color, HTC Droid Eris, and the Galaxy Nexus and I lost it. LOL Not too mention my search for the perfect router to finally rid me of that god awful Linksys WRT54GS combined with the overkill Smoothwall finally ended. My home network has been in shambles till recently. Again I apologize. Its purely my mixup and clearly nothing to do with the information provided at XDA. I just needed to search a bit more. Or I could have asked like I did here but maybe in a more positive tone. Im sorry for that as well.
So I recently purchased the GNEX and I love ICS. OMG I cant tell you how nice it is to finally have a proper smart phone with polished Android Goodness. I want the same for my Nook. From what ive read so far the "Unofficial Builds" seem to run pretty good. Users reporting it runs as good as CM7. Is this true? I mainly use my Nook for watching Netflix and Hulu. I do some light browsing as well. Would the latest build work well enough for me to hop in now?
Thanks for your help and understanding!
I don't know how far but CM9 is far from stable as CM7

Awesome. Reading comprehension skills FTW.
CM9 is nice. Personally, I'd wait for solid wifi and any true resolution on HW accel.
CM7 had 'official' stable releases and 'official' nightlies built by the CyanogenMod automated build process. The last stable was 7.1 but there were nightlies after that which continued to fix some remaining problems.
Back in mid November 2011 the build process suffered from some hardware failures and the nightlies stopped appearing. At the same time ICS was being released and the devs switched their attention to that (CM9) and, although the build process got repaired, the CM7 nightlies were never restarted.
There were some outstanding issues in CM7 that had got fixed but never built by the official process into either a stable or a nightly. That is where the 'unofficial' builds stepped in and built new ROMS from the source incorporating the latest fixes and including some other improvements. The most common of these is the MiRaGe build found in the thread in development and that has been very stable, gives great performance and is often referred to as 7.2
CM9 is effectively still in an alpha form and does not have official nightlies or 'stables' yet. The developers did encourage people to learn how to build ROMS from the source and some have now made these 'unofficial' nightlies available.
Some find these unofficial CM9 nightlies good and stable enough for daily use; I am one. There are trade offs; the CM7 ROMS are generally a bit snappier in performance and there are one or two limitations in CM9 functionality (e.g. hw video acceleration) but this is balanced by a significantly nicer user interface and functionality in CM9. You just choose based on what is important to you.
Nandroid backups are always your friend and allows you try out various options at low risk and just a few minutes to fully restore to a former point.
Thanks for the summary and info.
But how well does Hulu and Netflix work? Right now thats the most important thing.
Im currently running CM7 stable with the processor clocked at 925. I see alot of people running overclock kernels so when you say CM9 isnt as snappy to which are you comparing to. Low end or high?
Either. I'm running CM9 at 1200 right now and there is still lag (haven't done any tweaks though, working on other things). Besides that, I don't think Netflix is working on CM9 yet. If you are wanting stability, smoothness, and more application compatibility, CM9 isn't quite there yet.
It's funny how the people calling the OP clueless seem blissfully unaware of the situation with nightlies the last few months, but bobtidey broke it down well. The automated system for CM7 nightlies is broken, but the updated source is still available, and some people are sharing their builds from source (MiRaGe being the most reliable atm).
If Hulu and Netflix are your priorities, CM9 is probably not for you just yet. You can try it out a number of ways,
As bobtidey said, back up your current build, flash CM9, and if you're not happy go back.
Set it up on SD--there's a link in my sig for that, just grab CM9 and a compatible gapps instead of CM7.
Repartition the NC and set up a dual boot like mine (also linked in my sig) with MiRaGe's CM7.2 and Samiam's CM9.
If you just want a fresher flavor and don't want to mess around too much, I'd say go w/ MiRaGe's build.
Blah! It is what it is. As stated things have been pretty hectic around here. Now that I think of it things are always hectic. So I overlooked something and needed correction.
I just may dual boot. Ive wanted to try MiRaGe for awhile now anyways. I hear great things. Should be a nice upgrade over CM7 stable right? Thanks for info!

Best\Most Stable Rom?

Hi i just bought a new Hp touchpad.
I want to know what is the best rom for it.
I know that there are cyanogen 7 and 9 ports.
There are things that are not working on some of them , so if cynogen 7 is working and stable i think i would install that and wait for cyanogen 9 to become stable.
Can you give some advice , what to do , which rom shoud i install.
Thank you , and sorry if this is a noob question
CM9 alpha 2, its stable and actually running better than cm7
There are also several "kang" builds in the Dev section. I've been running CherryKang lately, with good results.
Thans guys , so have you had any problems with these roms?
Except the camera are there some other quirks?
And do you know how long is the period between releases ?
Thanks again

The cherryrom still doesn't have Netflix working but has HD YouTube working (it states that in his top post). The nightlies have everything working from alpha2 with only a couple changes that will be merged into the next official release anyways. The cornerstone ROM is really slow and bricked ROM hasn't seen public releases after alpha2. And there's protekk's AOKP and classnerd, neither have Netflix working either.
I say go for the nightly. And I guess development has slowed because everyone is waiting on dalingrin for new stuff. I'm guessing the kernel is going to be updated to 3.0 and or they're working on audio.
Samsung Captivate CM9 - Glitch Kernel | HP TouchPad CM9 - Bricked Kernel
I honestly haven't tried Netflix (I guess it's not working), and only a few games. There are a few notable ones that don't work, but for normal stuff it's all good. The main problem that I've had with CM (I've only used CM9 and skipped CM7), is that the TP will essentially lock up, often times when charging on the touchstone charger. That said, ever since upgrading to the latest CherryKang (0.9), I haven't had a single issue (knock on wood). I have tried Bricked and the official CM9 alpha and both did the same thing, so I think it's just a Cm issue (there are a few similar issues going around, it seems).
Go for AOKP.
M4 has working netflix and youtube.
I personally haven't found a rock solid rom , but there are a few that are really close to it. I'd say try the new cherry-kang v9.2 with o/c , HD youtube' + netkflix etc. Syn(3.10.2012). Its fast and reliable. I have to reset my Wi-Fi the least with this one.
I'm running aokp and nextflix and YouTube work no problem for me

I'd have to agree with the above post, the latest CherryKang (standard cm9 version, not the bricked rom) has proven the most stable for me. Unless you expect to be using the camera/microphone a great deal on the TouchPad, I would definitely suggest taking the jump to CM9.
I did just flash the Cornerstone 1.1 rom w/ 120 DPI patch, and although there have been a couple of very minor glitches, it's performing fairly well so far. (I was forced to reboot my TP-audio distortion- and my wifi reconnected without me having to use the forget the network/reboot rescue method. I haven't personally tried the AOKP Milestone 4 rom, so you might want to check out that thread and decide for yourself.
As for your question on release dates, other than the nightlies, they come out whenever the developer has something new to put out. Since I've been following these forums, it's generally taboo to openly ask a developer for the next release date. Doing so may make you susceptible to verbal reprimand from other members. Personally I'm not blasting you, but I don't want to see someone else fire back at you in a more harsh manner in the future.
Good luck with whichever rom you decide to flash!
HTC Thunderbolt - Shifts3ns3 3.1; HP Touchpad CherryKang v9.2;
I've recently been running AOKP M4 with great results, I like it
CyanogenMod 9 Alpha 2 is also fantastic
I wouldn't really suggest any others though.
I have cm9 on mine and Wifi doesn't reconnect a lot after waking from sleep. Ill check out this cherry one I guess.

I'd vote for AOKP. Its running really well on my touchpad.

[Q] CM9 ALPHA3/Beta

Just wondered how things were moving forward in terms of an Alpha3/beta release for CM9 Touchpad. I haven't yet rooted my TP as I've been waiting for a bit more progress. However news seems to have slowed since Alpha2 went nightly and from what I've read, it seem they can be a bit hit or miss form night to night.
Look at the roms mentionned here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438158
in my case the nightlies have always worked great, with no issues except for the mic/camera of course.
you just have to remember, the people who have touchpad issues are the ones who post, and there are thousands more cm9 users who don't.
I guess I'm just trying to say, go ahead and try it. its pretty stable and alpha3/nightly is just a name.
dalingrin said somewhere on his twitter hes considering the nightlys as beta.
I am running the May 17 OaT's ROM and it is very stable with WIFI working. That was a problem other ROMs. still comparing it to my Acer A500, and while stable, I think I prefer the Acer in many ways.
i can confirm this. the nightlys are very stable

I second that for awhile I was using one of the april nightly builds (can't remember exactly which one) and I found it to be more stable and responsive than Alpha 2. At least on my TP with Alpha 2, if I tried to shut it down it would reboot even though I touched the shut down button but that hasn't occured since moving to the nightly. Recently, I flashed AOKP build 36 and I have to say I am enjoying it and am planning on sticking with it unless one of the nightlys fixes the camera or microphone. I like the extra customizations AOKP ROM control adds and it so far has been just as stable as the CM9 nighty I was using. It's definitely worth checking out.
I've been using the nigthlies since they were released, and now they are hugely stable.

I'm running the nightly from 07-07-2012 and it has the microphone fixed, but still no camera. And I third the nightly's ... they are very stable. I had ClassicNerd and AOKP before and my Touchpad would constantly reboot and the touchscreen would become unresponsive. Ever since I flashed the nightly the Touchpad has been running like a dream. I haven't even overclocked it considering how well it's running.

[Q] Nook HD+ best rom for me, help!

I'm new to this but I understand the root & flash process.
I just need some help selecting & locating a rom for my nook hd.
I don't like the Barnes & noble os as it seems a little laggy.
Therefore I'd like to replace if with a proper android rom but I get confused with what the difference between stock & cm10 is.
I just want a stable android rom that's fast for browsing & will play netflix well.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Stock ROM is the default Barnes & Noble operating system, the one you're using now. The term "stock" is used to describe this ROM, as it's the default ROM that comes installed with the Nook.
There are other ROMs available, so that you can customise your Nook. The one I would recommend, so that you can comfortably just use Android on a daily basis without worrying about anything else is CyanogenMod 10.1.3 (stable). This is a stable ROM, and ready for daily use without worrying about anything else. That's CyanogenMod (CM) 10.1.3. Do NOT install CyanogenMod 10.2, as this is a nightly version and not ready for daily use. You can install CM10.2 if you desire, but don't expect it to be perfect; there may be few issues and problems here and there.
Installing CyanogenMod 10.1.3 runs Android version 4.2.2, so that's Jelly Bean. CM10.2 runs Android 4.3 (however, this isn't stable yet). Here's a beginners guide to installing CyanogenMod for your Nook: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317500
All the best, if you require any assistance, feel free to reply back.
For what it's worth, performance on my Nook HD+ with CyanogenMod 10.1.3 is absolute garbage. 10x worse than stock B&N ROM, everything lags to hell and back. Even scrolling the damn app menu lags, and I'm constantly seeing "<Insert App Name Here> isn't responding. Do you want to close it?" Everything, even the system idle process. I don't know what to advise as there seems to be no general consensus as to what's the best ROM, everything's under development, the only ROM listed under Original Android Development (which I'm hoping is as close as possible to stock) doesn't work.

My experience wasn't like that at all. While I wouldn't say it was blistering, it did seem on par or better than the Stock ROM. swiping was just a smidge laggy using Nova Prime.
I went on to Carbon and while it has a very nice feature set, it seems a good bit LAGGIER than the previous ROMs. I've been told that SlimBean runs nicely though, so I'm going to play with Carbon a little more but likely go on to that one when I decide to flash again.
I should expand a bit on my experience.
Performance was great the first half day, very speedy, better than stock ROM. By the end of the day it got a little slower than stock, a day or two later it was already pretty bad, noticeably slower, a week later absolutely terrible. It's as if performance degrades with time. I've tried reflashing it and now it sucks from the very beginning. If you find yourself trying CyanogenMod 10.1.3 stable and it still works great a week later, let me know--maybe I need to send mine in for a warranty swap.

Hi, I have been running 10.2 nightly for awhile now and have my tablet running several hours a day surfing Web, watching movies, reading, etc. and I have not had any of the lag or slowdown that you mention. I have had no random reboots or any trouble, I think it performs better than stock rom.
I am very happy with this setup.
So I hope this helps you some.

It is not CM10.1.3, it is your device being hit with the need for trim. Your stock would act the same way. Read in the CM10.2 thread.
Sent from my BN NookHD+ using xda premium
Oh my god, you're right! I have to admit I noticed the TRIM issue when I first installed CyanogenMod (hard to miss, it's at the top in big red letters ). I realized it's a perfect match for the performance degradation I'd been seeing, but I dismissed it as a possible cause out of a naive belief that there's no way a manufacturer could ship something that crippled. I thought surely it would have been caught during testing. I also didn't want to read a 100+ page thread to figure out exactly what the issue is when the search was broken. I've taken a few hours and caught up on the thread now... I guess if it looks like cheese, and smells like cheese... it's gotta be cheese.
I've got MAG2GA & 0x000015 memory chips, looks like my only option is to brick it and do a warranty swap I'm curious as to how the other people above reported good experiences; are you guys purposely installing builds with TRIM enabled because you know have good memory chips? Seems to me almost every ROM around here has it purposely disabled. Either that or you've barely used the internal flash memory.
I guess the first recommendation for Kido44 would be to figure out what kind of memory you have, so you know if you can install a kernel with TRIM enabled. The degradation in performance without it is so bad, I want to fling it at the wall. I guess it might not be noticeable right away for you if all you're planning on doing is some light web browsing and Netflix viewing, but you'll run into it at some point and weep. I suspect you're already getting there if the stock ROM is starting to lag a little bit.
As always, thanks to leapinlar for pointing me in the right direction
I've been happy with CM 10.1 for a while, ran really stable without any major hiccups, but the lag got so bad due to the lack of trim that I decided to take the plunge and risk installing 10.2 Milestone 1 with a trim-enabled kernel. I also have a bad emmc chip but I'm willing to risk it.
It's not what I'd recommend for everyone, but that's my experience.

Not sure I understand. Won't it get slow eventually because of the lack of trim?
Sure, but it was still usable after several weeks.
I like Slimrom for the most part and observedly better than CM 10.1.3 on my nook hd+. Seems faster and more responsive, and if you use Puffin browser, it seems like it's 2x faster compared to stock browser (that's just my imo, ymmv). Anyway, I've tested only 3 roms so far, slim, cm, and carbon, so my question is, are there any roms that you guys recommended on the hd+ that can maybe compare with slim? Slim doesn't seem to be officially supported.

[Q] Nub seeking advise (cm10 or cm11)

Hey everyone, awesome site! Yep, first post. :cyclops:
I'm completely new to Android though I have hacked a few things and understand the importance of making absolutely sure you know the procedures and make backups in case things get fubar. I've been digging through the posts quite a bit and of course see that opinions on use, stability, etc seem to vary a bit. What I'd like some kind feedback on is (as a nub) am I better off starting out using CM10 and then when I'm ready I can move on to CM11 or has CM11 been developed well enough to just start there. Also wondering how stable is "stable" on both. I'm much more interested in having a good and stable experience than a few extra bells and whistles until the kinks are worked out. I'm running a stock Nook HD+ now so it's all an upgrade in any case. Thanks in advance for all constructive feedback.
I went straight from rooted stock on my HD to CM 11 so I don't know how CM 10 ROMs are. But the CM 11 builds I've used from verygreen's thread since early January have been rock solid on my HD. Just 1 spontaneous reboot in the entire 2 months -- when granting superuser access to an app. That's it. Wi-fi, bluetooth, web browsing, music and video playback are all working fine. Swiping between screens is smooth. I did a clean install before I put CM 11 on, and I think that makes a difference vs. those who did dirty installs.
If you have an HD, CM 11 will let you use full screen mode which is very valuable for a 7" screen. I don't think you will get that with a CM 10 build which is based on JB. If you have an HD+, the gain in screen space that Kit Kat gives you is not as critical.
If you go to CM 10 first, you might have to reinstall everything for a clean install before jumping to CM 11. So you would ultimately save a lot of time by going straight to CM 11.
roms
hey Jodo901 :good:
my experience was that i purchased a HD+ and did loads of reading both prior to and after purchase. I chose the nook for a number of reasons (price vs performance) but also the awesome input from the guys here on XDA around custom roms.
For years I've always looked to get my devices updated with custom roms but always like to have a proper noob guide lol. The best place to start for me on the HD+ is this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317500
It explains the process step by step and is idiot proof (i did it!!) I have read numerous threads about which rom to put on the HD+ but settled on the stable 10.1.3 rom. i considered the 10.2 rom but the 10.2 had mixed reviews on the HD+ and the consensus was that 10.1.3 was a stable, mature and smooth rom. I am watching the CM 11 releases closely but it remains a work in progress, although from posters on the thread it seems that it is running almost perfectly. I will switch to CM 11 once verygreen posts a "stable" release - plus you can flash the roms as you wish, so can start with the stable 10.1.3 and then reflash when you're more confident or feel that the CM11 rom is more mature.
My advice would be go for 10.1.3 and follow the guide above. I didn't think the stock rom was that bad, but the 10.1.3 is night and day imho, its smooth, repsonsive and allows lots of funky tweaks. I've had this rom on my HD+ for a few days and am very pleased :fingers-crossed:
all the best with your choice fella
fish
Thanks for the quick responses guys! You've given me a bit more to consider and look into. That was one of the threads I bookmarked yesterday so thanks for pointing out it's validity. A further question that now comes to mind from what you both have said is how much of a hardware difference is there and is that something that can make a performance difference? Guess I'm still gonna be info diving for a bit tonight after work.
KitKat does improve on performance over Jelly Bean, but it's not something that will affect your daily use. I'm currently using CM 10.1.3 (stable) on a Nook HD+ and HD. I'm considering upgrading the HD to CM 10.2.1, as there is a stable build out. I will definitely upgrade to KitKat/CM11 when a stable build is released.
Personally, I only install stable builds. I don't want the hassle of encountering issues with nightlies. I find that CM10.1.3 is extremely stable, and I have not had any problems with it; although battery life is reduced from the original stock ROM, but that's nothing to be worried about. In conclusion, no issues with the CM10.1.3 stable build.
As a note, I also believe the TRIM issue has been fixed with the CM10.2.1 stable too on the Nook HD+; so CM10.2.1 should be fine too, but I haven't tried it yet.
All the best.

Guess I'm still gonna be info diving for a bit tonight after work.

hey jodo
i'm not sure what you mean by hardware difference? if you mean the effectiveness of each rom on the HD+ i suppose its a matter of preference and through trial and error in trying the roms available. It seems that CM11 is considered the faster of the roms available but as said previously this is an on-going rom development and not considered stable.
I considered what i was going to use my HD+ for, which in my case was surfing and reading books/comics and getting the best return on the stupidly low price vs decent spec and awesome screen. I didn't buy it to game as 1. its hardly a powerhouse for gaming and 2. i dislike mobile gaming and prefer PS and XBOX for that sorta thing. My priorities were smoothness, stability, customisation and battery life which i feel 10.1.3 provides, but others may disagree lol.

Thanks again for the input guys. :good:
I finally have a some time to dig in on the forums a little and maybe get to the rooting later. I'm running very light on the apps at this point. Just some online stuff, ebooks, comics, etc. Mostly looking for more control and customization.
@fishman09 - I thought perhaps there were hardware differences depending on the manufacture date of the Nook HD+ unit but I haven't seen anything like that so I assume it's a non issue. I know this can be something that makes a difference when hacking older game systems (Xbox, PSP, etc)
**********EDIT**********
Thanks again to everyone who gave me their 2 cents on my way into all this fun custom Android stuff on my Nook HD+!!
I have now successfully installed 10.2.1 and so far its working well and looks great.
Another data point: I was in same position as you. Decided to go for a cm11 nightly build (this was back in _Jan). It ran reasonably well, but I wondered if 10.2 would be more stable or better with battery life. It felt about the same, with couple missing things, notably no hiding of soft buttons. So I've now gone back to cm11, a march nightly build. I think it is as good as a $120 tablet is going to get . So I'm pretty happy and staying. I even enabled ART runtime and so far everything has run except asphalt 8.
Just make sure you format and wipe everything after doing a backup during your install process.
My Conclusion...or the time being.
Well after about 3 or 4 days of normal usage with CM 10.2.1 I have decided to go back to the stock version of the Nook. The difference in battery drain did not outweigh the bonuses of the upgraded OS for me at all. I would say the battery life was only about 2/3 as long. This is a big drawback in my opinion considering I really wasn't running anything differently. Yeah, it was a bit prettier and more customizable and I was very impressed with the stability, but it's kind of pointless to have a wireless device that you have to keep plugging in all the time.

I got my new Nook+ last week and pondered whether to root and which ROM to use. After one week of use, I have no real issues keeping it stock for now but will follow the kitkat development for possible future rooting.
