I know there has been plenty said about the Nexus 7 and using a USB OTG cable for extra storage but I thought I'd mention my success of hooking up my Nikon D300. I had ordered a USB OTG cable from ebay (r.ebay.com/zf1p7D) before my Nexus arrived. Tonight I plugged the three things together and as soon as I turned the camera on the gallery appeared, all ready for the photos to be imported.
Fantastic, basic photo processing on the go, still can't match Lightroom but I can take this solution with me
Hmmm i wonder if my D3100 can do this Thanks for the heads up!

I don't see why not, I did nothing to get my D300 to work apart from plugging everything together and turning it on. Your D3100 is newer than mine too.

Does USB OTG work on the nexus 7 without root?
EDIT: Just read up on this, so apparently Nexus 7 does not support USB OTG, but it will support USB Host. Does this mean I won't be able to plug in SD-Cards with the USB OTG cable but I will be able to connect keyboards, mouse, or even cameras like your Nikon?

Would you need root to use it as USB HOST? I am planning on plugging in my camera using the cable to see if it would show up on my N7(haven't received N7 yet).
I ordered the following cable:

I don't think you need root to use USB HOST. All you need is the adapter cable. Only if you want to use the N7 to open up storage devices, you will need to have root.
All that I've done getting the contents of my D300 in the gallery was done on a fresh out of the box Nexus 7. No rooting.

OK this is what I was doing. My original idea of buying the USB OTG cable was for controlling the camera from the tablet. So last night I visited the play store and installed a free version of the application (search for Nikon in the store). Once I had cabled everything together and before I had started the application I turned the camera on. When I did the the Nexus sprang into life, opening the gallery. I thought it was something I knocked so I backed out from the gallery and turned the camera off to try again. I did it again and realized it wasn't me. At first a new folder for the cameras photos didn't appear but I did notice that the access light on the camera was flashing like crazy. Then after a few seconds a new folder appeared showing all my cameras photos ready to be imported. I thought it might have been something to do with the application I had installed so I uninstalled that and everything still worked.
Hope this helps.
Edit: my kids got ahold my nexus again.

How'd that work? I have a Nexus 7 and a T2i i'd love to tether.
Does the DSLR Controller app work on Nikons?
I know it works for my canon. And it's awesome. You get all the controls on your nexus screen, and you can see basically what the output will be before taking a picture.

Haha damn, too bad my 5D cant do any of that. Full frame fun makes up for it though >.>
Just wondering, when you plugged in your D300, what mode was it set to? Theres usually a setting on the camera for what to do with USB (act as storage device or connect to printer). Might be why your D300 worked so easily while the other guy's D3100 didnt work at all.
I'm glad you bumped this thread. I finally got my otg cable and am happy/plesently surprised that my d3100 does work with my n7 tablet. I shoot in raw format so I use a special app to view the photos. The stock gallery app does show the camera and a download icon but because of the format it is unable to do it.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate the time you put in to show off all these cool features. I'm still waiting on Verizon to release the Note 2 unfortunetly. When using the Allshare dongle does the multi-screen feature work. For example could you watch Netflix and browse the web, and if so is it smooth. Thanks again for the video.
Oh, not tried it to be honest! Can't believe that slipped my mind, I will test it later and let you know.

OK, tried it, but whenever you watch video it full-screens the video to the external display (it is still split screen on the device and you can interact with the other window, but I don't think that is what you were after?).

is it possible to connect MHL adapter to USB hub (using a converter from 11pin microUSB to USB, if such thing does exists) so we can use HDTV mirroring and USB OTG simultaneously?

Oh that actually sounds pretty nice being able to stream video(hopefully Netflix) to the TV, and still browse on the phone. Is there a specific otg usb cable for the Note 2, more specifically t889 ? I had been searching every scenario , 5 pin, t889, etc. and can't find any that specifically mention for the Note 2. Meanwhile, I read posts and comments about people connecting the wrong usb otg and bricking their phone. What are you using? Thanks~

More likely than not you will need an external power source. A powered HUB is something to consider.
Only powered Hard drives work.

I can confirm that the WD My Passport for Mac (500GB) was able to be powered by my Nexus 7, with a cheap chinese OTG cable, without any issue whatsoever.
Can't say if it will also work with a Nexus 10 or not, but I would assume there would be no issue.

used an ordinary 2€-ebay-OTG cable... didnt try media importer yet, want to save 2,30€ and wait till root.
I can confirm that Nexus Media Importer by Homeysoft worked with a generic USB OTG cable and a couple of USB drives I had sitting around. I don't know if there is a free alternative but this one seemed to work.
EDIT: Just to clarify the Nexus Media Importer worked with my Nexus 10. I had not seen a confirmation against the actual N10 so figured I would confirm.
Nexus Media Importer verified to be working with OTG USB cables.
For those who do not have root or do not want to root. Please consider getting Nexus Media Importer as an alternative. Works like a charm.
Hope this helps!
Is this media importer allows playback with say BS Player, whatever. In other words, to play content from the USB without moving the file to the device.
I have root access, as well as Nexus media Importer
Can't seem to mount and USB drives in afile manager for general file transfer though. NMI does import media files though.
so is the idea here that you could use the n10 to power a hard drive and I could put some movies on it and play em? mp4's for example?

Hopefully simultaneous charging + OTG w/ external HD will be a possibility.

Can you copy files to an USB stick that's formated in NTFS? That would be ideal when you are abroad and need to empty the camera. Probably you can copy to FAT32 but if you record long movies NTFS would be the better choice. Why I ask is because if you use NTFS on for example my nexus 7 it's only read on NTFS and not write compatible.

For NTFS i use Paragon NTFS but you need root.

Yes I discovered it working fine today too. What I really want however is to be able to store photos from the camera straight into a memory stick hanging from the USB OTG. It's greyed out. Hmm.

No that doesn't work as you say. I am wondering why you'd want to do this anyway. Surely you can either use a larger memory card inside or just transfer over to the OTG as and when using the file manager? Also I think there would be an additional risk in accidently unplugging your OTG whilst taking pictures with the greatest possibility of corrupting your card and worse, losing your photo's.
I think
I think the OTG opens possibilities to external hardware options, like flash, light etc

That's a nice setup. Personally however I use an app that will do a two-way sync with any folder I select with my google drive. I set it to do an autosync when ever it detects a difference, is on wifi, and is being charged (so basicly every night it will update the backup) I also include my TWRP backups in that...Now if I can just figure out a way to get trwp to do auto backups during a reboot the process could be fully automated.
