OTG compatibility - Galaxy Camera Accessories

I just tried the OTG cable (that was purchased for the Samsung Galaxy S3) works perfectly on my non rooted Galaxy Camera. No additional software required, it worked straight out of the box. It saw my usb stick and files all useable

Nice info mate.. thanks.
Now all we need is just "phone enable mod" and we are complete

Can you copy files to an USB stick that's formated in NTFS? That would be ideal when you are abroad and need to empty the camera. Probably you can copy to FAT32 but if you record long movies NTFS would be the better choice. Why I ask is because if you use NTFS on for example my nexus 7 it's only read on NTFS and not write compatible.

For NTFS i use Paragon NTFS but you need root.

You mean for the nexus 7? Why I'm asking is because of I'm thinking of getting a galaxy camera and want to know what I can use on it before I buy it. Probably I will root it if I get it.

Yes I discovered it working fine today too. What I really want however is to be able to store photos from the camera straight into a memory stick hanging from the USB OTG. It's greyed out. Hmm.

No that doesn't work as you say. I am wondering why you'd want to do this anyway. Surely you can either use a larger memory card inside or just transfer over to the OTG as and when using the file manager? Also I think there would be an additional risk in accidently unplugging your OTG whilst taking pictures with the greatest possibility of corrupting your card and worse, losing your photo's.

I think
I think the OTG opens possibilities to external hardware options, like flash, light etc

For those worried about lack of storage (USB-OTG discussion thread)

They make these things called Micro USB to USB adapters. As long it has Host support (which devs can most certainly add) you are all set.
So stop worrying and buy the 8GB model
EDIT: Once you get your Nexus, please post a review of YOUR USB-OTG setup so that we can have a quick reference to know which products work and which don't.

Nah. I'll make do with the tablet I have until somebody wants to sell me the tablet I want. I'm hoping Asus will still sell their 7" tablet instead of throwing all that business to Google.
I know someone who has a massive music collection - almost 500GB in size - and, whilst he likes the looks of tablets, he cannot find one that would allow him to comfortably store even a fraction of his music on. If he were to buy a Micro-USB to USB adapter, could he then connect his hard-drive into the Nexus 7 (or any other Android device for that matter) and listen to his music off there?

An original 7" Galaxy Tab.
Being able to hook up an external HDD is great, but not the most practical thing to do on the go. Seems kind of silly to have to take out a hard drive on a short bus/train ride or something, but I suppose it's better than nothing.
Anyone else thought of some cool ways to maximize storage space?

1) There is the cloud. 20,000 songs is no laughing matter. And on a short bus ride is ample.
2) You can store a few of your favorite albums ON the tablet. For emergency, no data use.
3) Use the Storage method while at home or during long trips.
You can easily expand with micro USB sticks which you can't even notice plus they cheaper and you get more storage

Because that worked out so well for the Kindle Fire. Oh wait, it didn't, because the USB port is 3.3V and needs an external power source for host mode.
I'm going to wait and see if the Nexus 7 has proper USB OTG support before I even think about getting one.

did you really just say one should use an extern hdd for storage?!
first we would need to check the power level and then if it really would work who in the right mind would carry around a hdd all the time
the nexus 7 will fit in my jacket pocket most male people will not carry around a purse.
if i am at home me and most people will use a network drive.
i don't think i will need more than 16gb but we don't need to defend googles poor decission to not offer more space we are no apple fan boys and storage is mad cheap.
Not a huge concern for me...just a minor inconvenience. I think I'll opt for 16GB model for only $50 more.

do you have a link for a micro USB stick?
Doesn't the micro USB operating in host mode suck down the battery (assuming that it has the appropriate power coming in...many that support this don't!)
As far as a portable hdd being too big, use a flash drive. I've seen 32 gb ones for around $30, with 64 gb not being too much higher. Of course, that only works if you don't have to have a powered hub.
Why is it so hard for Google to put in an SD Card slot?

Question about this guys. So, assuming I load a few movies on a USB drive, I should be able to plug it into the tablet (via a micro USB-USB connector) and play the movies straight off the drive?
I only ask because I have been wanting this thing for a while, and loading 4-5 movies on it was going to be a huge plus, but 16GB is really cutting it close.
But if all I have to do is plug in a USB drive....I think I would be OK with that.

Not hard at all. They clearly don't want to.
Tab 2 is crap. I have a Tab 7.7 but still stuck on Honeycomb. Screen is most important to me and Tab 2 is crap. I want pure Google. Google refuse to put in sd slots because they think the cloud is so great. It's not. Right now I have 76gb of music and movies on my Tab.

I think we're going to wait to hear from one of the guys that actually got their hands on one...I couldn't imagine why they would run the power (I think it's 5v instead of 3.3v, but don't quote me) to the micro-usb, but stranger things have happened. If they DIDN'T for some reason, then you'd be able to, but only with a powered USB hub, so it would be a little inconvenient to lug around.
I agree though. If I can hook in a flash drive without the extra power, then I'm good to go, and will be picking one up ASAP.

you get what you pay for its that simple, you my friend have a dilemma so chose your priorities (pure google or micro sd clot) and pick your poison. Google had a price point and they did what they had to do to stick to it, so yes while It may only be a $5 addition, google has small enough profit margins as it is considering the kindle fire is sold at a loss and this has much more expensive hardware. So, I wouldn't expect google to take more than a 5% loss on this tablet, this is a business after all

Nexus 7 and a Nikon D300

I know there has been plenty said about the Nexus 7 and using a USB OTG cable for extra storage but I thought I'd mention my success of hooking up my Nikon D300. I had ordered a USB OTG cable from ebay (r.ebay.com/zf1p7D) before my Nexus arrived. Tonight I plugged the three things together and as soon as I turned the camera on the gallery appeared, all ready for the photos to be imported.
Fantastic, basic photo processing on the go, still can't match Lightroom but I can take this solution with me
Hmmm i wonder if my D3100 can do this Thanks for the heads up!

Does USB OTG work on the nexus 7 without root?
EDIT: Just read up on this, so apparently Nexus 7 does not support USB OTG, but it will support USB Host. Does this mean I won't be able to plug in SD-Cards with the USB OTG cable but I will be able to connect keyboards, mouse, or even cameras like your Nikon?

I don't think you need root to use USB HOST. All you need is the adapter cable. Only if you want to use the N7 to open up storage devices, you will need to have root.
All that I've done getting the contents of my D300 in the gallery was done on a fresh out of the box Nexus 7. No rooting.

OK this is what I was doing. My original idea of buying the USB OTG cable was for controlling the camera from the tablet. So last night I visited the play store and installed a free version of the application (search for Nikon in the store). Once I had cabled everything together and before I had started the application I turned the camera on. When I did the the Nexus sprang into life, opening the gallery. I thought it was something I knocked so I backed out from the gallery and turned the camera off to try again. I did it again and realized it wasn't me. At first a new folder for the cameras photos didn't appear but I did notice that the access light on the camera was flashing like crazy. Then after a few seconds a new folder appeared showing all my cameras photos ready to be imported. I thought it might have been something to do with the application I had installed so I uninstalled that and everything still worked.
Hope this helps.
Edit: my kids got ahold my nexus again.

Does the DSLR Controller app work on Nikons?
I know it works for my canon. And it's awesome. You get all the controls on your nexus screen, and you can see basically what the output will be before taking a picture.

Haha damn, too bad my 5D cant do any of that. Full frame fun makes up for it though >.>
Just wondering, when you plugged in your D300, what mode was it set to? Theres usually a setting on the camera for what to do with USB (act as storage device or connect to printer). Might be why your D300 worked so easily while the other guy's D3100 didnt work at all.
I'm glad you bumped this thread. I finally got my otg cable and am happy/plesently surprised that my d3100 does work with my n7 tablet. I shoot in raw format so I use a special app to view the photos. The stock gallery app does show the camera and a download icon but because of the format it is unable to do it.

More likely than not you will need an external power source. A powered HUB is something to consider.
Only powered Hard drives work.

I can confirm that the WD My Passport for Mac (500GB) was able to be powered by my Nexus 7, with a cheap chinese OTG cable, without any issue whatsoever.
Can't say if it will also work with a Nexus 10 or not, but I would assume there would be no issue.

I can confirm that Nexus Media Importer by Homeysoft worked with a generic USB OTG cable and a couple of USB drives I had sitting around. I don't know if there is a free alternative but this one seemed to work.
EDIT: Just to clarify the Nexus Media Importer worked with my Nexus 10. I had not seen a confirmation against the actual N10 so figured I would confirm.
Nexus Media Importer verified to be working with OTG USB cables.
For those who do not have root or do not want to root. Please consider getting Nexus Media Importer as an alternative. Works like a charm.

Is this media importer allows playback with say BS Player, whatever. In other words, to play content from the USB without moving the file to the device.
I have root access, as well as Nexus media Importer
Can't seem to mount and USB drives in afile manager for general file transfer though. NMI does import media files though.

Unfortunately it doesn't, at least right now. We're still not sure if it's a hardware limitation or a software one, but maybe in the next few months we will, with the coming of Custom ROMs on top of the unlocked bootloaders.

I'm still inline for buying it, but I guess it depends on your needs and wants
I want a replacement for my Samsung Corby that will (1) last me 3 years or more without feeling like something from the last century, (2) allow me to play some games, from basic ones to the more advanced ones and (3) something I can take everywhere without thinking about it (unlike my tablet). All of it without (completely) breaking the bank
That list got me to the 4X. It's the most affordable quad-core, and that gives me a guarantee for (1). It's a Tegra 3, which gives me a fair try at (2) at least for a year or two. And, with a 4.7" screen, it's smaller than many 4.5" devices I've seen (and unfortunately quad-core devices seem to be allergic to anything smaller than that).
Btw, it doesn't hurt that it allows for connection to a HDMI TV through a MHL adapter.
The USB-OTG feature is, unfortunately, also missing from some other competitors on its price range (like the Nexus 4), which also lack other stuff I value, like expandable memory. And, while the gaming compatibility might be better in the Nexus 4 and the S3, I don't mind missing a few games to have better graphics in the ones made for the Tegra 3
As a way to go around the USB-OTG, I intend to buy a large-enough micro SD (16 or 32GB) and take advantage of the ICS/JB USB transfer, which is much better than it was on my Froyo tablet.

That would mean it can't power the USB device. So, an interesting test (which I remember reading about here somewhere, but don't recall the result) would be trying to connect either a 3.5" portable HDD (that comes with an external power source) or an externally-powered USB-HUB.
Can anyone try or, in case they already did, share the result?

If it is a Hardware limitation then we wouldn't have OTG ever on our phones, even with custom ROMs.
Tho we would need official confirmation from LG, if anyone has it.
it isnt a hardware limitation. tegra3 supports usb otg. you can see that on kernel logs and the kernel actually has usb otg support enabled. my guess is that android doesnt handle it properly.

When we were talking about hardware limitation, we were mentioning more along the lines of the micro-usb port. For example, they might have used a port which doesn't allow for that type of communication.

A Port? Or you mean the way the port is wired to the device? Because all USB ports have data transfer.

Inside a port there's a bus or interface, a separate chip. Its this part of the story that could be the part causing external thumbdrives or card readers not receiving power from our phone, even if tegra 3 or kernel or OS supports.
If the thumbdrive doesn't even receive power then it have no abilities to even cry of its existence.

What if it's just the kernel/software limiting it to give power..?

could be a cause but logically speaking its not likely caused by it. According to USB Diagostic tool our kernel supports OTG.
meanwhile psy is having a live youtube premier of his new track http://www.youtube.com/user/officialpsy?feature=inp-lt-psy-SG

I guess we'll find out when the kernel source is released. Maybe it'll give the ability to enable OTG ourselves if something in the software/kernel is stopping it ftom functioning.
any news?
After the Kernel Source was being released, is it possible to install the otg funktion?

Nice. But real men don't back their phones up
Pffff. How 1999.
Real men use a portable WiFi harddrive.
(or is that too feminine? )

Well, at least you have enough space to backup. :good:
That's a nice setup. Personally however I use an app that will do a two-way sync with any folder I select with my google drive. I set it to do an autosync when ever it detects a difference, is on wifi, and is being charged (so basicly every night it will update the backup) I also include my TWRP backups in that...Now if I can just figure out a way to get trwp to do auto backups during a reboot the process could be fully automated.

What's the device you're using to do this? Sata/ide to micro USB?
I know (hope) this is more a joke than seriousness.
That is both sad an unnecessary. ...smhhhh
USB stick would work way better if you really need an external backup medium.
If you have to kill, might as well go overkill!
Amazing...

You have more than 128Gb of data on your phone? What the hell are you doing?
sandisk sell a usb 3 drive with a normal usb 3 on une side and a mini usb on the other side. Perfect to use with TWRP etc. ..no need for an OTG cable
nice setup

with the same price as a 128gb stick, you can buy a 1tb hard drive and a sata/usb cable, so you can use it for other backup
Real men don't back it up. We curse like sailors as soon as we realize we just lost everything again.
