After some time playing with the Nexus 7 I felt compelled to write my impressions. This device was ordered for my mom to use for web browsing and email.
I read a lot of reviews from several tech sites as well as some forums before deciding the Nexus 7 was the right device for her.
The reviews around the tech sites were almost all positives regarding the quality and price on this device, on the other hand, the reviews from several forum members where not that great.
People where reporting issues ranging from screen separation, blown speakers and death pixels.
Tech sites mentioned the build quality of the device and the almost leather like feeling of the back surface as good points.
Almost all of them concluded that this was the tablet to get at this price point. Some of them even went as far as saying that they haven't used their iPads after getting the Nexus 7 (People Such as TWiT hosts).
All of those great reviews, even from Apple pundits, made me beleive this was a great tablet for its price point. So today we finally received the device. The first problem was noticed as soon as we opened the device, the screen was separated and lifted above the silver bezel from the left side, so much that you can hear it flexing when touching it.
The second problem was noticed when the screen was turned on. Right on the center a pixel stuck on red color, so annoying that no matter what backgroun you use, it still shows.
I own a Motorola Xoom 4G/LTE and the Nexus 7 compared to it feels like a toy. I know they are not in the same price range, but the screen on the Xoom has the feel of hard tick glass that the Nexus lacks. I don't see how the back of the Nexus is supposed to feel like leather as mentioned by some reviewers either.
I already did the required steps to exange the device for a new one. I just hope that the replacement comes free of issues, even after reading from so many members over at XDA that it may not be the case.

I want to give an update on my experience with this device. The RMA process was completed and the replacement tablet came without issues.
My Mom has been using it ever since receiving it and I check the device once in a while just to make sure the lift screen problem is not present.
I have to say that after using the replacement unit my opinion on this tablet has changed for good. You get great value for the price and ,being a Nexus device, the assurance to that it will receive updates on time.
My original opinion was based on a defective unit, so I felt the necessity to post this update for any person still reading this section of the forums prior to making their decision to purchase one.

Honestly, even with screen flicker, this is ten times better than my iPad 2. I'm putting my iPad up on eBay tomorrow night and I'm proud to do it. I'm using a ZAGGKeys Flex Keyboard to type this post, I LOVE my N7. If you want to check out my review it's over in the accessories section of the forum.
I really hope you give the N7 another chance. This tab kicks @$$, literally.

I totally love the device. the size makes more sense to me than my 10.1 inches Xoom. I just want an issue free device.
After reading so many posts about people receiving a flawless device makes me think the one I received was a lemon.

Hi mate, I feel sorry for you that your Nexus 7 had those problems. I received mine yesterday (16 GB version) and it is perfectly fine. Hope you'll get the replacement soon.
I'm happy with the device so far and my Transformer Prime will surely be jealous. Nexus 7 is small and light enough to carry around and to read in bed, what I can't do with the Prime because of its size and weight. 7" is my thing and definitely not the 10".
The GPS is very good. After a few seconds 11 satellites were found (note: clear sky today in London!). Overall the OS is more responsive than the Prime. So far there is for example no message "Web browser is not responding" that I sometimes get on Prime since the latest update.
The only annoying thing with Nexus 7 is that the home screen is only in portrait mode. But I'm going to root it and I can say goodbye to that annoyance.

I'll wait until the replacement comes to see. My Xoom has 64GB Total storage and 4G LTE connectivity, so for me, the N7 can't fulfill my tablet needs yet. But recognize that my mom seems to be the perfect candidate for it with its 8GB and size.
If my replacement comes without issues, I'll pull the trigger on a second one with 16GB cause my wife liked the form factor. I've been a Google supporter for a long time, heck I paid 800+ on day one for and unlocked Xoom to dive early on this android tablet adventure so I'm totally on their camp, but I expect at least a working device.

I think you should have gone with an iPad unless your Mom is one of the exceptions and real tech savvy and computer oriented. I hope this doesn't read as me being negative, I understand being upset and I'm not trying to come off as rude at all.
Don't get me wrong I love my nexus 7 and I love Android especially on a quad core tablet. I also have the Asus transformer prime and its one of my favorite devices ever. But when it comes to buying for parents, if looking for something amazing out of the box and simple and easy, I don't think the first batch of first gen nexus 7 tablets is the best choice in most cases.
I know you already bought yours and everything but since you wanted to inform others I just thought I would share my experiences that I've learned along the way.

She is pretty much OS agnostic, she can find its way around on the two computer they have at home, even though one is running Slitaz Linux, she understand the basic concepts to be able to figure it out where the browser, email and games are no matter the OS.
I took it to Best Buy to see the iPads and she played with it already, but she also played with two tablets 7 inches in size from Samsung and Acer, and decided that was a better form factor.
She basically wanted something to use out of the house for some games she plays and on the house while not on the PC. The problem here is with the device being defective rather than hard for her to use.

I feel you on the screen issues but you aren't giving the device a fair shake until you've actually gotten some seat time with it.
right now, it sounds like you're judging a defective device solely on some cosmetic issues that hopefully will get resolved with the replacement.
play with it some more until the replacement comes and evaluate it based on its size/weight, form factor, JB, speed/responsiveness, functionality, etc.

I can almost guarantee there were more devices that were perfect versus those that had issues. Plus Googles time frame for start to finish was a little ridiculous.

Maybe they'll change up the way they release a new product through the Google Play store. The whole bit with people being able to get them through retail channels faster than the preorders was a disaster. I hope they stay with Asus, if they can learn from their mistakes. I'm sure it's a pretty steep learning curve for the manufacturing and QC guys for any new product line.
Yes. I think most of ASUS problems are with it's initial batch of tablets. After about a month things seem to smooth out. So I'll probably do my best to hold out a month next time. But that's so hard for me because I'm impatient too.

There's threads like yours in the galaxy nexus forums saying the exact same thing but about Samsung and how google should choose another company. All these companies will have their own problems. The nexus like is not perfect and not meant to be, its where google test its new android builds.
I'm really surprised to hear about all the quality issues with the Nexus, it's pretty disappointing . I have the OG Transformer and I LOVE it, it's been amazing.

I agree with the time frame being ridiculous, but I don't know about most devices being perfect considering how many people are going through multiple replacements with defects. It'd be different if the first replacements everyone got were perfect, but I see a lot of people settling on units with relatively minor defects because they fear that their 4th replacement will be worse than their 3rd. I love my Nexus 7, but even I'm settling on the minor defects that it has (minor screen separation and multitouch issue) because I'm afraid that a replacement would be much worse.
No matter which OEM Google uses in the future, there will always be unhappy people. My device is rock solid and defect free.

You know, I really can't say. We know of EVERY little problem the N7 has because we come to this forum. But I think Google has had and expects stuff like this, with any company.
I've had 2 Asus Android tablets, and both have problems. The N7 has very slight screen lift ( no big deal to me) and that's it. My Transformer Prime had shot GPS, crappy WiFi, and buggy software....BUT, I love what they do. The Transformer line is one of a kind beast, and the N7 is even better. First 10" Tegra 3 tablet with keyboard dock style, First 7" Tegra 3 tablet with JB...for $199 to top it off So I think I am willing to take chances to stay on the newest/ hottest gear...and Asus has that gear. So I'd say Google should give Asus another shot if they can fill their needs.
To be fair, screen Flickr is because of the tegra 3 (it is an issue with teg3 HTC ONE X's; screen color problems = defects from the screen manufacturers (LG, SHARP, SONY,not Asus)... Same issues in OneX/XL/S's with varying hue and color temp.
Screen edge coming up or slightly moving.... Because it's not glued in, making it easier to service... Pop off the backing and tighten the damn screws.
Some people have the slightest issues and return items blowing the issue excessively out of proportion... Some of these people are also the most vocal on forums.
Ultimately the returns/exchanges are less than 1% of total units sold and happens to every device. Let's remember when the Xoom first came out... Anyone? Lol

And even for those with defects, they aren't exploding, they aren't catching on fire. They just didn't use enough glue on one single side. Not a big deal.
As a rather funny note, all the ASUS preorder hate seems irrelevant in Germany where the device isn't even available yet at all.
Sometimes, Google is way too USA.

Why not? Asus are a wonderful manufacturer.
My Nexus 7 is perfect and my Samsung Galaxy Nexus is, too. I was worried about my products after reading these forums and I was constantly having to check for defects just to make myself feel better and then I realised how silly that is. Headaches over nothing, because a small minority are incredibly vocal!
I am always behind Asus after using their motherboards/monitors and enjoying my previous TF101 tablet.

4 months to production is unheard of in this market. They gave us something cheap, fast, and good, so I am hoping Asus becomes the 'go to' manufacture for nexus tablet's.
Looking forward to November's nexus devices, and hope Asus is putting together a bigger tablet with a keyboard (2560x1600)

These OEMs with their disgraceful reskins, false promises of support, and either shoddy or overpriced hardware. They deserve nothing more.

Sounds like a software thing.
I have to admit the build quality is second rate, but I really love this little piece of crap. Yeah, it has that weird cross-axis multitouch problem and the screen keeps wanting to jump out of the bezel (or at least peep over the edge). And I'm told if you turn down the brightness and read the mobi version of 'War and Peace' while standing on your head and humming theme song to Star Trek on the first Wednesday after a full moon with a pomegranate in your pants at some point you'll get some kind of screen flicker, but I haven't seen that yet.
I love the GPS on this thing. I especially love that fact that I could get a device with GPS and no cell radio (which invariably involves a wireless provider and either a contract or a ridiculously high price). I've used multiple Android phones over the last couple of years, and aside from an Evo 3D that worked fairly well, GPS on functionality was horrible to useless.
I'm still debating whether to RMA it for the multitouch problem, because I can see that being an issue with some apps (mostly games). But, considering the price, even if that never gets fixed, so long as it keeps working as well as it is now, I can live with the imperfections.
Same with me I love this little POS. Asus has a long history of making good products with lower build quality. My first laptop was an asus then got the eeepc then transformer tablet and how the nexus. The laptop broke and so did the eeepc, I sold the transformer after a few months so I don't know how well it would of held up but I still think all of them were great value for the price. Out of all of those the nexus 7 is the best in terms of build quality.

Back on topic, I guess I'm lucky as my device (third...) is perfect. Gotta admit tho' , that it is one sweet piece of junk.
Gps is great btw. I get fix in seconds inside my place, while desire s barely can get signal even laying just by the window.
I have the multitouch problem too, and honestly I think most people have it but don't realize it. I've already rma'd three times for other problems so I'm not going to even consider it. Unless news starts coming in about new ones being perfect with no occurrences of multitouch issues, then I'll probably be tempted. Right now I'm seeing reports of people exchanging it for the multitouch issues only to get a replacement with the same problem. No thanks. First tablet for me. Long term Linux user but I can do most things on this and so rarely boot my laptop now. Have a sneaky feeling that Swiftkey on my phone is a little better, but not by much.

I still haven't seen any issues with multitouch, or screen flickers, or anything else people have complained about. I guess you hear about all the bad things but never about people who have no problems with it.
I really love the tablet too. I just love how fast it is and the streamlined experience I have with Google Apps syncing my mail and reminders. 90% of the things I did on my laptop are not done on my Tablet which is browsing the web, videos, music, and small games.
Since I'm having issues with this one, I think I'll get a refund and try the tablet some other time since I can't deal with these issues right now.

Owned a TF101 and Galaxy Tab 2 7" and this is by far my far my favorite. The speed is top notch and the 7" screen size is also great. The 1280 resolution kicks the crap out of the 1080 that the Tab2 has. Pretty much the perfect device in my opinion.

I have currently the HTC desire (in a draw somewhere), galaxy s2-exynos4210 (for alarm clock/ gaming), galaxy s3-exynos4412 (main phone), archos 70it (7inch 1ghz single core tab that I got in 2010 and is in my wardrobe somewhere and haven't seen it in like 6months ) and Samsung galaxy tab 10.1(alarm clock/ pdf viewer).
I also know my s3's cpu is more powerful, the GPU is considerably more powerful, yet I prefer using this less powerful nexus 7. I couldn't think of a better phrase to describe how I feel about this tab, the op by saying "I love this piece of junk" has just got it bang on. Out of all my devices, the n7 is defiantly my favorite at the moment. Although, I have just put a leaked Jelly Been rom (LH7) on my s3 and it is smoother than the n7 but stock android just looks sooooooo! much better looking than touchwiz, so when the s3 gets a stableish CM10 (as in all the elements which make "project butter" work are working properly as it isn't that smooth at the moment and the memory leak is fixed) , my n7 my have some competition. But at the moment, the n7 is just fantastic.
I had the Multitouch issue and screen lifting. I RMAed it and still have those issues. The multitouch isn't causing me any problems for now so I decided to ignore it. I'm watching closely on the screen lift problem (stable, for now). I also decided to enjoy my N7 and accept the fact that Asus can't do better than this at the moment....

Lol, that is bad. My niece got a cheap Android tablet last Christmas. I think it was selling for about $150 at the time. It was slow, had a horrible resistive screen and it lasted about a week.
The quality of junk is steadily improving. I always try to keep 20-years-ago me in mind when I'm feeling cheated because the glass on my $250 high-powered hand-held computer (with 24-bit accelerated HD video, super-accurate GPS, compass, accelerometer, gyroscope, wireless broadband internet, touch interface, loads of cheap or free apps and games; which holds every song I've ever owned plus HD movies) barely perceptibly pokes out on one side. 20-years-ago me would be envious as hell and would slap me for being such a spoiled baby.
I love this. Thind and its in my opinion better than the iPad.

Fair enough, but considering you have to not be touching the tablet in any way other than the screen, not have it charging, not have it on your lap, and not have headphones plugged in, not have it sitting on any conductive surface, and use a multitouch app or such to see the problem, I'm sure there are plenty of people who have it who don't notice. I have hundreds of hours of usage too and had no idea till I saw the thread and recreated the conditions.
People in the thread are asking those that don't have it to post a video so they can be sure it's not standard. One guy didn't have it with two fingers, but was able to recreate it with four. But as soon as I'm sure that new ones are defect free, I'll probably try to get it exchanged,.

Again, before you say that, please read the thread, it's not a problem most would see under regular use. Not saying you don't have it, but I don't want people to think it's a huge obvious problem when it really isn't (like I said, you have to be not touching the tablet in any way other than your fingers, etc. Mine is in a case and even holding it in the case makes it work fine, but there may be some case materials that could make it so the multitouch issues show up as if you weren't there touching the tablet)
Honestly I wish I hadn't read some of these threads., I wouldn't even know these problems existed : )

I honestly have to say I feel the same. I posted in another thread about "Project Butter" being a bunch of P.R. crap and I still feel it has a long way to go but this little thing really is a great device overall.

Nope. I have a screen lift but I love it to death. There is no other 7" tablet in its class. In its price range with such hardware. Its a shame its got so many issues but I don't care I can always fix it.

I have a problem which is pissing me off A LOT - but it's not a hardware one, although I can't find a solution.
I can't get true multitasking. Chrome (and every other browser) keep reloading my tabs, for instance, wasting time and bandwidth, and apps keep losing my progress. It's really lame.
Tried all those RAM managers, V6 Supercharger, etc. Nothing helped.
Sounds silly, but it's really ruining the experience for me.

I knew full well that some models developed screen problems creaking, lifting, bleeding, speaker problems etc... HOWEVER all devices can faults of some sort, I got my nexus today (c90) currently choosing a rom and im loving it. I have checked for screen problems and speaker problems, if I came across any problem I would have returned it and got another one.
At the end of the day its a great device, if you regret buying it, second hand nexus 7's are holding their value well and are selling just a little under RRP sell yours and buy an iPad ... Oh wait some ipads suffer from wifi , screen and overheating problems.

My personal opinion is that some people are just being overly picky. They expect their 200$ tablet to have the same image quality as a 500$ Transformer Infinity. Asus might have taken a few tradeoffs to get this tablet at such a good price, but it's still a much better tablet than all the other products that used to sell within that same price range. The screen quality for instance (which some people are unhappy with) is miles ahead of my Xoom's screen.
Also keep in mind that happy users don't often post on forums. There is more apparent people having issues with their N7 because that device sold like hot cakes. Bottom line, I suspect the ratio of issue/fine tablets isn't that much worse than other products in the same price range.
Loving mine (c80). Knew about all the problems before I got it, but took the risk anyway. I got lucky. No problems here :thumbup:

are you using a custom launcher and an over abundance of widgets? im using the android browser(aosp, not chrome) with the stock launcher, and o havent had one browser reload on my n7 ever. it sounds like you have something seriously draining your ram. do you use any fkasable mods/themes? a bloated custom rom maybe?
It's the best 7" tablet you can buy... other devices have their own problems

Regret it? Hell no and I already read about all the issues. Took the chance and mine is fine. What I regret is buying that $500 under performing, lagging in portrait mode, barely supported Galaxy Tab 10.1 that is sitting on my shelf. I don't regret a $250 tablet that runs circles around that one all day long.. And it's actually supported

I dont regret buying the tablet cause it is awesome, but i do regret it because i dont use it as much as i thought i would.
Only had mine a day and love it to death!
I haven't had any issues....yet. Hoping If I do its with in 15 days so I can return and exchange for another one.

I think if you read the forums for every device you want to buy (that's been out for a while) you will have a hard time finding one to buy. Forums like this are a magnet for people with problems and people here seem especially picky. It may seem like doom and gloom around here because the people without problems don't post or don't come here.
I'm not saying the nexus 7 is without flaws, but you're not getting an accurate picture here.

This thread is identical in every salient respect to travelling to a distant country, walking into a hospital, and asking "what the hell is wrong with this country? Everyone here is wounded or sick or dying". A little perspective would reveal that the patients in a hospital are not a representative sample of the larger community, and therefore not indicative of how well others are doing outside the hospital walls.
The XDA forums cover dozens of devices and development platforms. Each of those has various forums, and it is usually the _(device)_ General forum that houses the complaints. Nexus 7 General - the forum you are reading now - isn't even one of the most active 'General' forums, and the majority of posts here aren't about problems that would affect a purchasing decision. But when someone has a problem with their Nexus 7, they do a Google search and XDA is almost always the top hit (much like 'AAA Taxi' was often the busiest taxi company in big cities back in the Yellow Pages days) so the number of people with problems is much higher here than it is elsewhere. Let's look at some numbers:
Nexus 7's sold: ~3-5 million
Total number of threads in Nexus 7 General: 1335
Total number of posts in Nexus 7 General: 57242
So let's assume the worst-case scenario: only 3 million N7's have been sold, and every single post here was made by unique owners of faulty devices. That would represent a ~2% failure rate.
But the actual sales numbers are between 3 and 5 million... let's call it 4 million. And looking over the first 10 pages of threads, I'll be generous and say that 20% of the threads are about actual problems in the N7 (and not, say,someone who simply didn't bother reading the manual, or who just wants to complain that their $200 N7 doesn't do everything their $700 iPad does... the actual number is closer to 10%, but I don't want to bias this in favor of my point so I'll call it 20%). Also looking over the first ten pages of threads, it is apparent that some members join in on any thread dissing the N7, so the number of posts doesn't actually represent the same number of unique people having problems... again being generous I will say 20% of the people who post here - the real number is nowhere near that high, probably in the single digits - have critical purchase-decision-level problems. That would represent a ~0.2% failure rate.
But, as mentioned before, the majority of people who are perfectly happy with their N7s, who don't have problems and don't want to change their ROMs, don't end up here at all. It's the people who google 'Nexus 7 problems' that end up here, so the population has a pretty strong bias. Even just taking into account the biases I pointed out above, the N7 has no more (and possibly no less) problems than any other device.
But it sure has its share of drama-queens *****ing about it.
I recently purchased an N7 but at the MWC I saw ASUS announce the Fonepad.
I would love if I could use my N7 as my every day phone.
The snag is I'm in Canada so it might be hard to obtain one, and I'm not sure how the atom benchmarks against the processor in the current N7.
I've also been considering returning it because I've heard a new version of the n7 is coming out with 1080p and 2GB of ram.
If you always think about what products that will be released in the future, you'll never buy and enjoy anything. The N7 is great. You bought it, now enjoy it.
Well, obviously newer tabs....except cheapo ones, are gonna be better.
If you wanna spend 300....you made a great decision. If you can spend much more, then no you didn't.

I bought the N7 last week and ended up returning it. I'm trying to transition from an iPad to an Android tablet and found the screen quality on the N7 to be lacking. It's an excellent low-end tablet, but the screen quality is nowhere near the iPad.
Right now I'm going to either
a) Get a Nexus 10, OR
b) Wait until Mid-May to see how the refreshed Nexus 7 will turn out.
I love the size of the N7, and I already have a tablet for the moment, so I'm thinking I may choose option b. I also fear that if I end up purchasing a N10, it'll have some amazing hardware refresh in the next 4-5 months and I'll end up getting ticked off.
Since I already have a tablet of some sort, it's easier for me to wait a bit. If someone needs a tablet NOW, I'd suggest the N10 to them.

Low end? Its specs still stand up or beat most newer 7" tablets.
For 7"....not much that's better...the low price is a bonus.
If you're gonna talk 10"....its apples and oranges. They can pack more tech into their bigger size...obviously. Also...some people don't consider 10" cause its too big.
If someone is afraid that something better will come out....that WILL always happen. So better not buy anything....or maybe just rent...so you can upgrade at will!

Probably a poor choice of phrasing on my part (I'm battling a head cold and can't think straight).
The internals are excellent, but the screen isn't great. The screen is on-par or better-than tablets in that size range, but it's not as good as a larger sized tablet. Since the size isn't a major issue with me, I have the luxury of being able to compare the larger screens to the smaller ones. I don't expect them to cram the resolution of an N10 into an N7 though.
My particular N7 also had very washed-out colors and very bad backlight bleeding at two corners. Hopefully any refresh that is done will fix quality issues like this.
I think the screen is fantastic - no issues here.

You could always use Google Voice and GrooveIP together. I use mine as a house phone with that combination while I'm at home. A Google Voice account is free and GrooveIP Lite is free on the play store. There is also a paid version but the free Lite version has everything you need. Use the Google Voice app for texting. All free on a Wi-Fi connection.

The N7 forum is probably the last place you'd ask if you made a good decision. I'd venture a guess that most people would confirm that you made a wonderful decision in purchasing one, regardless of what for.

A bit of good old fashioned research would have answered all questions you have asked here. .
You have bought a quad core, tegra 3 running device which is still quite powerful. It will do whatever you ask it too generally, and it will do it well. I bought mine for £169.99 if i remember correctly, for the 32gig version. If you take all this into account, then go ahead and use it, you`ll find yourself amazed at how good it is, versus value for money, there is nothing better.

Sales figures also confirm why it is such a good device...if your expecting snapdragon 4/ 2 gig ram type hardware then obviously stay of the crack. Respectively, nobody can deny that it is fantastic value for money.

You made a good decision with the information that was available at the time. Don't beat yourself up about it.
I like the direction things are going and I think we will see more 7" tabs with small bezels and voice integration. People get pi$$ed at teh idea of using it as a phone, but like I keep saying you don't have to use it as a phone, its just nice to have additional options.

I find the Nexus 7 to be a blast. It's so much fun getting to experiment with other developer's ROMs on the latest form of Android. Of course there are always updates to be released, nothing's perfect. The Nexus 7 is definitely a good choice considering what other Android tablets are floating around in the market.

I don't see why people would be angry about using a 7" tablet as a phone. We already have a 6"1 phone out now. Heck, we'll see 7“ phones pretty soon.

Eh low resolution screen is kinda a deal breaker, anything lower than 720p is a pain to use.

Honestly disappointing screen kills it right there. The cam is better, but really I don't think 3.5mp means anything compared to a 1.2 both were good10 years ago.

I think the slate looks good and is more of an alternative or maybe a compromise between some of the very cheap tablets and the nexus 7.
For me the smaller battery would be the killer. HP quote 2AH where as the N7 has a 4.3AH battery with 3 hours more use available. A four hour flight to Lanzarote would be marginal with the Slate by the time you take time at the airport into account, it will be used to keep my 2 year old entertained.
The expandable storage isn't an issue for me as I have the 32GB version. Not interested in holding a tablet up to take picture, I have a phone and a camera for that. HDMI; had that on my Nokia N8 and used it once to try it, I have used dlna to stream to the telly though.
To me it looks like someone at HP has bought a N7, looks at the pros (cheap, light,size) and cons (fixed storage, no back camera) and used it as a starting point and tried to beat it. Good luck to them but I think it will suit a slightly different market to the N7.

It looks good... but I think you're probably right about it being too late to the game. If HP can market/advertise this as aggressively as Google has with the N7, then it might stand a chance. Google are repostioning themselves as 'content providers' - music, books, magazines - and the 'cheap-as-chips' N7 is a loss leading gateway, somewhat similar to Amazons Kindle.
Hewlett Packard are a tech company first and foremost, and don't have a similar repository of IP content that they can push to make this 'slate' a compelling purchase. In this digital age, people buy their tech based on what they can watch, read or listen to.

Still, having said all that... it's an intriguing device... I like the microSD card slot (something sorely lacking on the N7).
If it has an easily unlockable bootloader (I don't know what HP's track record is on that), then I might consider getting one.

Screen aucks no GPS thick and ugly silver plus HP logo on there automatically kills it. The HP brand is no longer a symbol of cutting edge got to have technology. It is a symbol of a relic technology company that is holding on to its last strong hold which is server technology and enterprise.
I think it's a good timing. with N7 2.0 coming soon, ppl will consider this one as a cheap alternative to the N7 2.0 instead of the old N7.
rather be a Guinea pig and get more regular updates than to be stuck with something that will 99% of the time will never see the latest is update. plus don't have to worry about all the bloat that other companies seem to love to fill phones/tablets up with. Google has also shown even with older nexus devices they have been kept updated to atleast ICS where as other devices you could forget about it. I am sure when keylime pie comes out the nexus 7/10 will see it. how many tablets the same age or newer will see that?

Uhhh.. The Slate 7 is a stinker.
This is a quick unboxing and review of HP's latest attempt at an Android tablet.
I can't say a whole lot of good things about this tablet. I was sorely disappointed in the overall build quality. The screen was almost rubbery to the touch and it appeared to be warped and separated on the edges. The screen was odd and had almost a glazed look to it. The back camera is decent, but the front camera is not even adequate for video conferencing, let alone the occasional "selfie". The specs are sub par for the price, in my opinion. I wouldn't spend more than $99 US for a tablet like this. I have seen off brand, generic tablets that are build better. I suppose the one saving grace is the stock Jelly Bean 4.1.1. For what you would spend on this tablet ($170 US), you should jump on a Nexus 7 or a Kindle Fire HD.
This thing is starting to make the HP Touchpad look like a great success.
These are my opinions, of course.
not a bad tablet but hp customer support is pretty crap. That and the fact that there laptops are gone really bad lately.
I think if they priced it at $99 you'd have a real alternative for people don't wanna spend $200 for a quality tab. But its only $30 less than the nexus 7, with considerably weaker specs. Who wouldn't just cough up the extra cash?

Look at the wild benchmark differences on exact same devices!! Depends on a lot what you score. So benchmarks are basically meaningless. Anyone can sacrifice battery and smoothness to put up a good score!

Got one today. It appears it does have a GPS. It pinned me right down to my house in Google Maps.
I will say this, it doesn't seem laggy at alll. The problem is that some apps (Instagram, SiriusXM, Foursquare, UPS Mobile, Jetblue, and others) are marked incompatible in the Play Store. Apps like Twitter, Facebook, Angry Birds Friends, etc. work fine.
I'm not sure what the delimiting factor is, but it may have something to do with the resolution and how the apps were built.
