[Q]What to test when buying a used device? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone. I'm thinking about buying a used SGS and I want to know should I check on the device before I buy it? Is there an app or codes that does some sort of testing on the phone?

What do you mean with "test"? Just see if the screen has no scratches, cracks or anything else. Also check the body if its not scratched or broken. And,check if it goes "smooth"

play some music to test the speaker, check the screen for dead pixels, make a few test calls and try connecting to the internet. Also, check the imei to find out if it's a stolen phone. You don't want to be caught using stolen goods. You might be able to prove your innocence, but you won't get your money back.

I mean to test it's functions like GPS,Sensors,Music, etc. I know that *#*#0*#*# can do that but i ask if is there any application that might help me to test it without LCD Screen Test(*#*#0*#*#). Thanks!

Broken Xperia uses?

Hey there.
My Xperias screen is broken, the bottom half is dead but the touch is still working. The phone is fully functional except for this and that the slider is bent in the lower left corner a few millimetres. I am using my old K810i and I'm buying a new phone soon, but just leaving a functional Xperia to rot in a drawer seems a bit... uneconomical?
NOTE: I will NOT be repairing the screen. No, there is no insurance that covers a broken screen. No, I won't buy a replacement screen for 90 bucks. Don't suggest it, please.
What I am looking for are uses for this device now that I've decided not to repair it and rather get a new phone, so don't give me comments like "Why not fix it?", if you'd be kind. I want to utilize the phone as it is, maybe the keyboard can be connected to my PS3, maybe I can sell the phone, maybe I can use it as something else. All suggestions are welcome!
Thanks
/Felix
Anything else than selling it will require huge effort and good tech skills.
if you're not gonna fix it, sell it; it's basically useless. Give someone else the chance to resurrect it.

I agree with this. Possible use could be as a wireless router for your notebook, either for WLAN or for HSPA...

nueUSBKeyboard?
Also there's probably software that lets you use it as a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard.

Hm.. since there are devices with a 480x480 resolution on WM6.1, I am thinking it might be possible to cook a ROM that uses 480x480 instead of 480x800 and therefore the part of the screen that's still working would be quite usable.
I don't know if this would really work or if anyone has ever even tried it, it's just an idea.
YE, lets cook a rom for one device oO
[x]sell it
maybe a tech freak will love the opportunity!

I know what you can do, start your own phone store and use that X1 as a display model.
Haha, "Askew Xperia with random cracks and scratched battery cover"
Thank you all for your tips. I'll try to sell it for 80 bucks or so, if I don't find using it for my PS3 EXTREMELY useful ^^

Think I should put it up on the marketplace? Appropriate pricing...?

Battery cover?

I broke my battery cover when trying to take it off. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement for it? I called Samsung and they do not sell the part individually.

It would be helpful to know which Nexus S you have. There are several model #'s and they are a little different.
Check global parts direct. You have to buy a minimum amount though and I don't think they come with the nfs chip.

I don't whether you are in the UK or not but I just picked up a genuine battery cover (with NFC antenna) from ebay from a trader called dew_trading. £16+p&p.
edit: it was for a I9020 and he's showing as having 5 left.
If you're in the US, make sure to try again and tell them that you want a warranty replacement for a broken back cover-- not that you just want to buy a regular replacement.
I know it sounds stupid, but I got the same line a bunch of times when I called. I had to ask to be transferred to the Warranty department and be sort of insistent that my cover was broken, and I needed it replaced under warranty etc etc. It should only cost you like $16 through that avenue.

Galaxy S amoled screen broken but not the gorilla glass

Hey guys, my old and trusty galaxy S amoled screen shattered somehow, and I do not want to repair the phone as who knows the internal parts might die anytime?
Does anyone know of other uses for such a phone? Or is replacing the screen the only way out to make full use out of it?
It's interesting to see a phone model 2 years old still has so much development going on

If you're handy with things like this, a replacement screen is about $80, which isn't too bad. Pretty big pain to do it though. On the other end of things, if you're half decent with a linux terminal (or willing to learn a bit), ADB will be your best friend here.
EDIT: Also unless you mess something up internally or do something really wrong flashing it, it won't just die on you.

and when replaced ...turn on the device en you'll see that NOTHING of data, pics, music etc. is lost...

Hi, I had the same issue few months ago. At that time, I found that you can buy a replacement display on e-bay, but most users claimed it was not an AMOLED display.
Also, in my case, I was not able to connect to the phone by ADB.
For those reasons I then decided to send the phone to the Samsung repair center. The only problem was that they wiped the phone (they did a factory reset). However, I didn't loose any picture I have saved on the phone. The phone is happily working and running CM10 nightlies
regards,
marco
I have a broken touchscreen (still works but is badly scatert)
So can i only replace touchscreen?
So not can i just put a new lcd with touchscreen on it. (I have amoled one is it posible to put lcd on it?) Because i know amoled is a pain to.findd parts.

When a phone has/had 1 bug/malfunction people will do anything to bring that negative point up. You really shouldn't worry about it AT ALL.
Since 434 came out I haven't heard anyone about it. And even @ 350 I barely saw people that faced the problem. Imo it's exaggerated.
It's your choice if you are not sure go try it in a shop first or ask anything you would want to now forehand and we will try to answer it. I haven't heard anyone complaining about sod, only before .350 and some of them.
I think it's a great device. But take into consideration that the screen time is between 4-5h, if you want more you might want to look an Amoled screen. Also it's worth saying that standby battery is Great.

Never had a SOD or a freze or something like that. Everything is fine with my C6603. I am running Stock Rom and use to have root on the previous FW-version. never had any problems.
SOD issue is solved long ago, the happen also minimum for this device. Nothing to worried on this, it is not massive issue like happen in Samsung Galaxy S III.
SOD issue had occur in Samsung Galaxy S II, S III, NOTE II, ASUS PadFone 2 also.
As for screen crack, that is user behavior cause, any phone can happen this.

first, be sure to have a pocket large enough for the Z to fit in
second, make sure your movement is not compromised by the Z in the pocket
third, either get a bumper protector(whatever you call it) or leave it as it is(this is what I did)

[Q] Is it possible to...

hey guys, I have a really quick Q for u. Is it possible to only replace the Digitizer/Glas on the One? They sell em for really cheap and because my screen still works fine after droping it (hell even the Digitizer still works!) I hoped that i can just replace it. The search doesn't show any result when I type in things like Display Digitizer etc. Did anyone attempted this? I saw some people replacing just the Glass on a Galaxy S4 on YouTube but there are only a few really poor videos on YouTube about the HTC One.

No, don't bother trying. The digitiser/glass is fused/bonded to the LCD and is very, very difficult to separate, so you'd just be wasting your time. Buy the whole LCD/digitiser assembly, and you'll be good

Dude just send it in for repair ... if you try and repair it it's going to cost you a fortune every time you attempt to repair a part you'll destroy 3 others.

it's not a matter of Faith it's just facts .. have you ever separated a digitizer from glass or an lcd ? it's an 11 on a scale of 10 in difficulty
if you tried it 100 times you would get maybe one working one.
and you have one chance to get it right .. good luck
I went to a cellphone repair center yesterday to get an iPhone's digitizer replaced, and I asked one of the guys who worked there if they fixed HTC One's too, and he said "no those phones are on our blacklist, you try to fix one thing you'll end up breaking something else." I think it's best to no try to open up this device. I know how you feel though, you really want to try to fix it on your own, but I can tell you from experience, some devices aren't meant to come apart, let alone put back together properly.
