Droid 3 is crap, worst smartphone I've had since update - Motorola Droid 3

Ive had this Droid 3 for about 9 months. Its been working slower lately and really laggy. There was an automatic update about 2 months ago now that completely screwed up my navigation. When I try to navigate anywhere, it will search for GPS forever and IF it connects it is slow and inaccurate. It used start right up and nav with no problems.
I pay 160 a month for two phones, unlimited data and insurance. If I am paying nearly 2grand a year on a smart phone it better preform at the highest level and immediately start navigating. I am on the road constantly and need that navigation.
3 keys on the keyboard require several presses to work also
Do you think if I go into Verizon they will replace my phone with a certified used phone? I dont need a brand new one and a new contract. Just need a phone that works like its supposed to do.

I had a very similar situation (I can't say if the phone was working slower, but the GPS was flaky and the keyboard was bad and getting worse). Rather than deal with the Verizon store folks, I called Verizon Customer support, they shipped me a shiny like-new certified used phone and a box to return my old one, and gave me five days to transfer everything over. It's been a couple weeks, and so far, so good; I gotta say, this is the best smartphone I ever owned!
Good luck to you!
Regards,
Chad

A few users have had the GPS crap out. Call up VZW and they'll send you a refurbished D3, or maybe even different model depending upon who you talk to. Also, I've noticed different GPS performance on different ROMs, but it sounds like you're stock.

wow thanks for the replys!
What number for verizon did you call? I will definitely give them a call.

The last time that I was in a brick and mortar VZW store, they told me that they do not stock replacements - all replacements are done by calling customer support.
You can always try a factory reset, just to rule out a software/app issue.

Motorola has a one year manufacturers warranty. Within that year, you should be able to get a refurb.
On Verizon, dial *611 (or #611 I keep forgetting which one) for customer service.
Good luck

Well maybe it's a problem with your device, because here in Brazil I have good gps performance and we don't have half the network you guys have there. I'd try a reset/reflash

I'm on T-Mobile (883 radio) and don't have GPS problems. Are you sure your GPS settings are all enabled?

I got the number off the VerizonWireless.com web site:
Customer Service
Dial *611 from your cell phone
(800) 922-0204
Monday-Sunday 6am-11pm
My understanding is that the warrenty on the original device is a year (and you don't have to buy from Verizon for them to honor the warrenty, I got mine from Costco) and that the replacement device has a warrenty either until the end of the original warrenty, or 90 days, whichever is later.
Good luck to you. I have to say, the call went pretty quickly. You may want to do a factory reset before you call them, it seems like they can tell that you've done one, and that will of course be the first thing they have you do.

Chad

Try GPS Status if you are having issues getting a signal as it will show number of satellites. It takes about a minute in airplane mode without AGPS to get a lock for me, with AGPS its only several seconds usually.

I think schmutz and gunk gets under the keyboard. I wanna try canned air but it has moisture.

Touchscreen Problem(and others)

recently i have been having a lot of problems with my phones. when i bought the phone it was great until about a month ago the accelerometer got messed up and everything went into landscape for no reason, so after two weeks of dealing with that problem i called t-mo and they had me go through the usual troubleshooting steps which i had already tried. they asked if the phone was rooted and i acted like i had no idea what that meant, and they sent a replacement(refurb) about a week into using the refurb i was having really bad battery life of about 20 minutes, i called t-mo again and told them my battery was shot and what was going on. they decided that the phone was broke but they would send me another battery as well.
then i got the phone 4 days ago and it seems now that the touchscreen is going out. i went to pull my notification bar down cause i had an email and my app bar came up, when i tried to close it nothing happened. right now it seems that the entire screen thinks i am touching 3 inches below where i am and so i have been using the phone without touching the screen(not fun), so i called t-mo again. first thing they asked me was if the touchscreen not working was inhibiting my everyday use of the phone, obviously it is affecting my usage of the phone since i got it because it was a touchscreen. t-mo told me after a few minutes of looking up my info that since they have sent three phones out(even though i told them not to on one of them) that i have to take it up with HTC. HTC is telling me that i have to take it up with t-mo. if i am not mistaken all refurbs come with either a 90 day warranty or the remainder of the one year on the original phone whichever comes first. i know there are some t-mo employees here, so please tell me who i should talk to or what i should say to get my phone fixed, this is ridiculous that i got the rufurb and it doesn't even work. aren't they supposed to test each one before they send it out?
thanks in advance guys
Yes they are suppose to test it out but those big companies... ahhh. I'm convinced that T-Mobile should be the company you should talk to for a replacement. They should provide you with another one since it's within the 90 day warranty. If they tell you to talk to HTC tell them HTC told you to talk to them. Not much but I can say Hope you have better luck!
Sounds tough dude! I've been lucky enough to always have re-furbs work for me, but sounds like you're not having my luck :/.
I have an insurance plan with T-Mobile, $7 a month, and lets you replace your phone, no questions asked, anytime you want. You can try seeing if you want to sign up for that and then they take care of it through the company that does the insurance for T-Mobile, and skips HTC and T-Mobile altogether.
Best to call T-Mobile and get them to get in touch with HTC direct to try and solve the issue.
As for the screen always going to Landscape mode, this used to happen to me. I figured out a fix when I noticed the Fancy Animation setting was causing the issue in Spare Parts. I disabled it and the screen was auto-rotating fine.
After disabling the Fancy animations in the settings too and then re-enabling them back and in Spare Parts, all was well.

[Q] I need honest answer PLEASE

Is this phone and company worth switching over too ? Do to Sprints changing my plan without my approval,I have the opportunity to switch to another carrier.Out of the other big 3 Verizon,T-mobile & AT&T is the only one that is willing to put their offer in writting to me. The other reason I am even looking at this phone and company is because both of my sons want the IPhone and my wife only wants a phone offered by them as well..
So..please fellow XDA members tell me staright up..should I stay with Sprint and my Hero for 1-1/2 years more..or start fresh with this phone and AT&T..
Mac
50 views and not even 1 response..?
Is there no one on-line that has this phone wanting to step up and answer the question ?
I really would like to know the feelings of the folks here, since those that have this phone also have AT&T's service..
Mac
Not an easy one to answer really. I would say if you are completely turned of by what Sprint did to you then changing wouldn't be a bad thing. Going with AT&T will get you points with your family. And who couldn't use more points with their family, right?
That being said, you have by now undoubtedly heared about the GPS problems facing the Galaxy S phones. Some have found their phone is better with different versions, some claim all the updates and changes have made their GPS unuseable. If you are in need of a phone that has good GPS then I would say you can find better. Personally, the GPS issue isn't a deal breaker for me. I am also one of the lucky ones that find it works fine for how I use it.
The phone itself is amazing. Being on XDA also helps as there are many helpful and informative people. Also, the Captivate has been out long enough that the mods are becomming better and better every day, that is if you are into modding your phone. Heck, stock it still is a good phone.
So it all boils down to what you really want to do. I think that is why you haven't had anyone jump on giving you an answer. Good luck my friend!
There is no "right carrier". The advantage of AT&T (now) is coverage and GSM. AT&T has better coverage then T-Mobile, but about equal to VZW. GSM allows you take your phone to Europe - VZW CDMA does not;
But the future brings change - VZW has a slew of World phones coming out (they have GSM as well as CDMA) - VZW has LTE coming out - which is supposed to be a global standard - so travel issue may be a thing of the past.
AT&T has the iPhone today, but rumor says a CDMA iPhone on VZW for the holidays. But rumors are rumors.
I don't know what you are looking for in writing - all the carriers plans are on their web site. T-Mo does have the best customer service, and VZW has some great android phones. If you don't travel much, and T-Mo has good coverage where you live, they seem to have the best prices and some of the best phones.
AT&T is fine too - not trying to steer you away. I moved to AT&T for an iPhone years ago - and I travel to EU; so VZW wasn't cutting it.
Anyway If the family wants AT&T and the price for phones and service fits, then make the move. But you are stuck for 2 years.
Sounds like it's 3-1 in your house. I'd go ahead and make the switch if thats what your family wants. I don't think you'll be worse off with one carrier over the other, at the end of the day they will all screw you. Captivate is a great phone if you can deal with the sometimes difficult to deal with GPS.
I agree. Go with what makes your family happy overall. The Captivate is a fine device, and I've been much more pleased with it than I was with my iPhone. Talk it over with your family, putting them first won't do you wrong.
My first phone was from Virgin Mobile and was prepaid. I know they leased out network access from Sprint. It was awful. I never had good coverage, and then they started charging more for everything. I left them.
I've been with AT&T now since 6th grade. They've never screwed us over, they've always been helpful, and whenever we've had problems, like my sister signing up for those joke things they advertise on tv putting huge data charges on our bill, they cleared it up right away and even gave us a credit on the account.
Of course you're going to hear horror stories of bad customer service from everyone, but really it's not all that common. I've always thought AT&T had great phones, and they've all last me a long time.
My favorite phones have always been Samsung ones as all but one of my phones has been from them. My first was a Sony Ericsson S710a and it lasted me until one day I was sliding it open, and it slipped out of my hand and into a wall and the LCD shattered. After that I had a Samsung a727, then the SGH-i607 Blackjack, then the SGH-a877 Impression, and now the Captivate.
You will be happier with AT&T then with Sprint. But ultimately, you pay the bill and you decide where your money goes. I'll just add that I don't usually praise any company for no reason.
I love this phone with ji6 gps works completely fine for me it does what its supposed to every time lately gets me there no issues. Im very happy with att besides they make you pay for tethering, but theres ways around that with this phone, hehe ;-)

Thanks Guys..
I hate spending a-lot more money so soon on moving my service (since may 2010)..but I really don't know how I could stay with them.
As to any cell company posting their policy on line..well..that can and does change (with Sprint almost daily)..and actually having a written signed contract is something the other companies won't do,AT&T will. That does a lot for me..and for my wife peace of mind.My boys have wanted the I phones for sometime..I don't want one..which is why I am asking about the Captivate. BTW...Sprint elected to change my verbal contract given to me at the time of signing..and I fought it the best I could without turning my Lawyers loose..and I most likely would have won,but the cost to do so would have been prohibitive without a written contract,or so what they told me when I spoke to them about it..
So..the phone has a GPS problem..and that isn't a deal breaker for me,but I do want to see it fixed and soon.Having a 2.2 rom is what I am running on my hero now along with one of the best looking themes going right now IMHO..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797077 and so hopefully we can get this ported over here at some point..even if I have to learn how to do it myself
FWIW..I looked closely at this phone and also the Ios4 and hands down this one blows it out of the water on anything video..I stopped by T-Mobile and watched the HD Avatar movie on their version when I was looking at what they offered...It was just awesome..simply jaw dropping..
I am looking forward to the 2.2 upgrade and what comes after with it..So..I will be on here more and more reading what I can..
Thanks Again
Mac
Mac, just a heads up. The leaked 2.2 rom we have actually fixed the GPS. There's no real problem anymore. Obviously it will become more refined when the final release comes out but it definitely works now.

stuffy is a difficult company but I can't feral with poor service so I disk with them. get used to advanced features like tethering being blocked and such. but you can fix that by looking in the dev section. att isn't all bad though mostly because they are stupid, I told them verizon had a 15% vetrans discount (they do) and asked att if they had something similar. well they didn't but the customer service rep put me on an active duty discount because she didn't know better. it needs to be approved at a higher level with pics of my id and a valid military email according to there website, well I put the papers in anyway and had 15% off my bill the next month. so they obviously don't look at it.
verizons version of bloatware is full blown add ware. if you plug an incredible into a windows pc it hijacks explorer and goes to a v cast music site. on the fascinate they replaced the google services with microsoft services.

I think it's refreshing to see all the honest answers, not a ton of chest pounding "our phone is the best" posts. Most people on XDA by nature are into tweaking so the out-of-the-box limitations aren't a showstopper.
For me, I really need a world-capable phone. My family also is on ATT so that helped as well. I think all the carriers are converging on offering similar product. ATT has less HTC stuff but has the IPhone. ATT is currently behind on Android, but the Captivate is certainly helping to address that. I like the phone and have recommended it friends. Go for it.

I will give my two bits. My experience has been good with att. Cs has never been bad, but at times there were moments that did not go smoothly. Always quick to address concerns of mine and they love giving credits out to keep me happy. I have been one of the lucky that never had major problems out of the box with the captivate. But coming from a storm running on atti think my standard were lower. Gps on froyo still doesn't work perfectly but has had improvement with locking and tracking. Dev support is actually really good so that is a big plus. My wife loves her captivate and she is not a techie at all. Hope my input helps.

It does,and greatly appreciated..
I understand the gps issue, and I am wondering if the delayed release of FroYo on this phone is partly because of it. Rooting and adding on customs roms has been working great for me on my Hero..and that phone is finnally acting the way it should have all along. Removing AT&T's bloatware will be my first priority after 2.2 is released..
I am curious about one thing..I know you can't load 3rd party apps unless rooted and a custom rom..but can you direct push them with the sd out of the phone and in a reader from a pc ? If we are working out of windows and a terminal..we should be able to insert any .apk or what we want.. anywhere we want..can't we ?
Thanks Again Guys

You can push them using ADB or even easier, if you google something called the "Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine" or just sideload wonder machine, someone created an app to so that you don't even have to use the command prompt or hack the phone. No need for a custom rom, and I don't believe rooting is needed.
Here, I'll link you to it.

I made the switch you are thinking of about 1.5 years ago and I have no regrets. One thing to keep in mind is the data cap ATT now has on their new subscribers. I signed up when unlimited was an offering, and honestly I don't know that I would have been comfortable using 1 smartphone, let alone 3-4 of them with limited data usage. ATT also had better coverage where I lived last year but would say Sprint is on par within the city limits now. The Evo is a really nice phone (Several people I know have them and are pleased) but I won't go back to Sprint after all the horrible customer service I had with them for 8 years. My local ATT business rep does an incredible job and is a big reason that I just renewed with them(they let me keep unlimited data). Ultimately, if I was in your shoes, I would probably do what made my family/wife happy as long as it isn't going to cause financial heartache when you exceed the data limit. I think they charge in blocks of 200mb for overage but you should definitely look into how much data your family has/will be using. My .02
Edited to add: Depending on what kind of user you are (business/personal) you might want to leave that cog. 2.2 alone until it works. I loaded it last weekend, went out to a job, and was unable to d-load an important pdf that was in my e-mail. Fortunately I had a laptop but in the past I would have been able to count on my phone for a quick blueprint reference. Sounds like it may be a fun thing to play with as long as you don't REALLY need everything on your phone to work. Also, the GPS was horrid on cog. 2.2. Needless to say I flashed it back to the original software when I got home. My GPS works just fine after the JH7 OTA update was installed. Worked yesterday on a 2 hour drive where I only had phone coverage for 20-30 miles. I haven't "tweaked" the GPS settings, just whatever they changed with JH7 is working.

Dam good advise..Thanks
They charge in 1 gig allotments for overages now..not 200 mb. I too was worried about doing just this..and this is per line..not per plan. I went back through all of my bills and no-one has even come close to 1gig..let alone 2 gigs..but I understand that can change too.
The main thing for me and my family is getting a phone that is going to work..every time. I've run into some issues with mine on my job where I needed it and something crashed it. Also it's so tiresome for me to hear all the complaints and moaning when something crashes or FC's on their phones..I can deal with it happening on mine cause I am used to tinkering with it..but I have to say I am very tempted some by the I 4's simplicity...it would be nice just to not have to worry about updating mine almost daily, and just use the durn thing. I just don't know if I could deal with it or not as a day to day phone. I am at a loss in that regards..I know you can jailbreak them and do similar things we do with our Androids..but..I don't know enough about that to even consider doing it right now. I most likely would just so I could download apps and movies on it to watch from my pc..I got a week to figure this all out..and you all here are helping a-lot..
Thanks

I honestly liked the iphone4, and had one for a week. It was fun and all, but it had the same problem as my 3G, the ability to make and MAINTAIN a phone call. Obviously that isn't much of an issue for younger kids since you can still text with spotty coverage(my 13 yo uses about 60 min. a month and 1,000,000,000,000 text messages) I don't know if the iphone is somehow on a different signal than the other phones, but I have been very pleased with the PHONE CALL ability of the captivate. My wife loves the iphone (though she keeps eyeballing the captivate now) and like you, I do not enjoy fixing problems, so I have tried my best to keep her interest in my phone at a minimum. I can honestly say I do not miss the iphone for anything. I also enjoy the *cough cough* wireless tethering of my captivate(free app) that iphone never did get right(and when it did work, there was the whole loss of signal issue). The iphone is good at running apps and texting, outstanding even. I just really need to make phone calls and MAINTAIN a call when I make it. But like I said in my previous post, if your use is personal, iphone might work. If you make important calls, it fails.

No data again...

This is getting old, I thought when I traded in my POS thunderbolt I was done with these problems. Hard reset, pulled SIM, pulled battery, & still nothing. Someone please remind me why I'm paying $110+ a month for service that seems to always have problems. I'm not rooted, was told to get new SIM from VZW..too bad they are closed at 11 pm

recently i took a road trip from FL to MI. Not even an hour into the trip i lost all data connectivity. when i called VZ i was xferred to tier 2 support. when they couldn't help me they xferred me to the 4G support team. they couldn't help me either so the guy figured my radio was toast and sent me a new phone but also left my ticket open for additional research. once i hit the Atlanta area my 4G lit up and all was well. but the moment i left a 4G area i was dead in the water. the next day I was called back on the open ticket. the tech told me they were pushing a hybrid PRL to my phone b/c the region i was traveling in (and where i live) had a lot of old alltel towers. well low and behold my data connection has been flawless since. no more handoff issues either whereas before i was dropping the data connection almost daily.
not sure if this would resolve your issue but perhaps its worth a shot. call tech support and ask to speak to the 4G group - maybe say they were helping you before and you need to follow up just in case there are any restrictions to who they transfer to that dept.

I have had days where my data goes in and out all day long and other days where my data is solid all day. The other day, a day when I left my GPS in my wife's car and was traveling out of town, I lost data for the entire day. I called VZW tech support and of course they didn't know as much about the phone as I did and couldn't help. I am rooted, running the latest update pulled from the Motorola servers. I am afraid to take it in to Verizon because I don't want them to see that the phone is rooted and refuse to help me. Right now, if I unroot, the only way they would be able to tell that the phone had been rooted is because I can't revert to the old baseband, so I figure I'll wait for the official update to roll out, try that if it is different that what I already have, and if that doesn't fix it, I can bring it in to Verizon because my baseband will then match stock, updated phones. I agree, this a really frustrating situation that we shouldn't be paying for.

Yes. Some days everything is fine, some days, not so much. Since it's so erratic, it's hard to say if the new radio improved anything.
I find I only drop 3g never 4g even then an airplane toggle usually brings it right back.

Retitled. How to hose your phone in 35 easy steps. :)

To be fair to HTC/Sprint I retitled this. As the phone is not representative of a normal M8 (either by hardware or corrupted/miss programming).
Long story.
If you want the short version, "This phone sucks" (and by the way so does the S5).
Here is the long version.
Bought the phone first day.
HTC Unlocked and Rooted it as soon at it was available. Applied S-OFF as soon as it was available.
I had not much time to play with it and stayed on Stock and have WIFI on full time which is used at work and home.
Couple days ago I decided to try some ROMs (being very patient for things to mature a bit). I tried Barebones, pretty good ROM. Note I had "dirty flashed it".
Then I took my first long trip since I got the phone. 100 miles into the boonies.
It popped up "Roaming Guard every 2 minutes", every call. But it was still running ok.
I had forgot to shut the roaming guard off (or it was locked out by the time I though of it).
This is a known issue and happened on M7as well. Most reliable way to deal with it, is to full wipe in order to disable it. (I tried all the tricks).
Well at this time OMJ released his "Harman" ROM and Firmware.
Well I guess it's a good time to start clean, wipe and switch to OMJ's Harmon ROM (and firmware) (whom I've been a loyal customer of)
So this stupid Roaming Guard thing keeps coming and going as I sort out which ROM I want, restoring things with TB etc.
But now, my phone is "stuck is 1X". WTF. And if it does occasionally show 3G as soon as I use it, it drops out completely or reverts to 1X.
So now I think I hosed something really bad. Can't get 3G at home or work. My wifes HTC One M7 is fine (running OMJ's BadBoys ROM)
Updated Profiles, played with PRL's.
So I put it all back to factory (except S-ON) and used the HBOOT that hides that's it's S-OFF.
And flashed the closest Stock ROM I could find (which so happened to get no Data or Voice at all). Perfect !!
Then took it to sprint store, and it was a sharp kid and he said it was rooted and nicely handed it back. He suggested I add T.E.P. and "try again".
Well I figured I'll have to S-ON it. And stopped in another store to added T.E.P. just in case. I had like 2 days left.
So I was gonna go home S-ON it and go to another Sprint "repair" Store but decided I really needed to get to some other commitments.
So I restored a backup and on the road and the phone was back to "Normal" except for the stupid Roaming Guard thing. WTF.
Then it hit me. The new ROM from OMJ was telling me what my REAL network was doing and the stock ROM was lying through it's teeth.
I'm well aware of Developer ROM's displaying "1x" when it sees 1x but after being on the stock ROM (with WIFI on), I kind of forgot about it.
And I was never clear what the "New" Spark Icons were really saying anyway (with WIFI ON or OFF).
So the truth is this thing has been running like crap since day 1. And I believe even worse since the first OTA firmware update.
I started researching options to get the Galaxy S5. Turns out the reviews are worse on the S5 than the M8.
Then I kept finding threads like this one.
https://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/155517
Maybe I have a bad phone. Maybe I'll just smash the thing and try another one.
I miss my M7. Luckily my wife has it.
I had to get my first M8 replaced because it was roaming all the time. My second one is much better . Sounds like you have a bad one like my first one. I returned mine within the first 14 days to get a no-questions-asked replacement for full refund.
Uhh.. No problems here. Sounds like a defective device to me. They won't swap it where you rooted it, TEP will cost you a deductible and they'll send you a refurbished model. Shouldn't of rooted so quickly.

I don't understand if u don't want the roaming guard to sound just uncheck it on the settings. If you have trouble with your settings dial *#*#4636#*#* and select phone information scroll down and select the option cdma+evdo/lte then reboot and check if that help. Then again u should be aware of this

Not so easy to shut Roaming Guard off. I'll bet if most people look right now, You'd find it greyed out.
I just completely wiped my phone again. Ran RUU on it. Immediately Disabled the Guard. And a half hour later it's all locked out again (but it's locked out disabled).
I don't know what causes it to lock.
But you do have to do it immediately after a wipe.
I'll check out the Options #*# option you suggested. Thanks. I remember that being mentioned before.

I tend to root as soon as it's available. In case an OTA comes out and lose the ability to ever do it. I also like to see if I can root it with in the 14 days, because if something does go wrong I can swap it. I can make it factory looking again. I just didn't want to bother in case they could fix it, because it felt like just a programming issue. I knew I was taking a chance when I brought it in like that. I've brought in MUCH more hacked phones and walked out with a brand new one, with no T.E.P.
I'm still not sure if this is a "Broken" phone. It definitely won't pull in weak 3G like my M7 did.

It probably is.
Fwiw, I've never seen my roaming guard settings greyed out.
As a sprint tech I can tell you 100% of the M8's that have come in to my store that I've replaced have been better the second time around. Seems like there were some lemons in the first batch. You'd better take it in to get exchanged or break it to get a replacement soon(lol) because as of today we were ordering new replacements, soon it'll be refurbs once there is stock in the warehouse.
I also noticed the serial number on my original M8 started with FA, while my current one starts with HT. Could be that ones from a specific location were bad.
There is problem in this phone. I don't think why you face this type of problem?

Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully I won't have to "break it". I never have, but I would if it came down to it.
I was thinking that they are not refurbished yet as well.
I'm not convinced 100% it's broken yet.
I did notice in a breakdown of the phone, that they do have little spring loaded contacts to the Antenna's, which have been a problem on past phones. And that might be all it is.
I have $18.00 glass screen installed on it as well. And it's installed PERFECTLY. Chances of that happening again are slim
I really would like to get this phone to work.
That thread I posted, folks got second phones and still had issues.
I think it has to do with this whole Spark thing.
You know I wouldn't be rooting and wanting the option of Roam only etc. if the Sprint Network wasn't so bad in the first place.
The only thing that keeps me is the SERO plan. But that is wearing thin. Everyone of my co-workers gets 10-40x faster data rates than I do.
AT&T or Verizon.
Sprint better get their act together.
Oh and the store I did go to. They just fired all their Techs 3 weeks ago. It used to be a good store to go to.

Me neither.
Should definitely look into getting it replaced, though.

My M8's serial number starts with FA and so far, the only real issues I've had are sending/receiving texts at home. Sometimes, they come in delayed but I attribute that to the network moreso than the phone. Though, updating the profile/prl seems to fix it. Forcing the phone to re-provision while on CDMA rather than LTE seems to also keep it from happening sooner.

I'm curious now if my phone is bad or its network related. I seem to drop/miss calls quite often. I just checked my serial number and it starts with FA as well.
I'm wondering if these phones were all built in different locations. I have a gold one from best buy and this thing works like a champ. I get similar cell signal compared to my s3. Even at my in laws house which just got lte a few months back and my brother in laws house where I get no signal on my s3, it acted the same with no signal. He lives in a secluded area. I'm reading a lot of negative things about phones bought thru Sprint being problematic. Haven't read anything about the gold best buy phones acting up. What do you all think could these phones be built in totally different locations?
Sent from my 831C using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Maybe not different locations, but definitely different batches. Some could have subpar antennas.
I believe the serial number indicates the distribution center from which the device was produced. I saw mention of it in the Firewater thread when people were trying to figure out why it worked on some devices and not on others.
Serial number for my phone started with FA. Ordered it after watching the unveiling, got it two days later.
Haven't had a single problem with the phone as far as software, and no hardware issues like defects.
Guess I'm just lucky.
Knock in wood taking the firmware update on H/K ROM doesn't change things down the line.

I have a gold one as well and also see none of these issues. It also seems to be comparable to my S3's reception.

endless disappointment and exasperation with T-Mo. *

Once a fine service before it became the un-carrier, T-Mo tech support is utterly useless.
We've had t-Mo since 2011 1st with HTC Sens, then I added an M7.*
For the last year plus the Sens has been having issues with WiFi Calling. *I've tried everything that T-Mo suggests while still paying for inconsistent service at home because T-Mo has no coverage here.
I've changed ISPs and routers and now have a CellSpot that only the M7 ever worked well with.
I've restarted, changed SIMs and have just bought 2 new LG G4s for $900. *Still no WiFi Calling and endlessly trying the same fixes with T-Mo tech. *
They don't seem to save notes or read them from one tech to the next and expunge them at random, so no one can follow the trail.
The Sens had W006.5 errors and the LGs have REG99 errors.
"We need you to be on 4G signal to get the SIM OTA" *Never comes.
"We need you to be next to the cellspot when the OTA is sent".
Uh ....... what for if the WiFi Calling doesn't work consistently anyway?
"Provisioning can take up to 2 hours then you should see a text update "Welcome to T-Mobile".
And every tech person I speak with has a different method, none of which have worked so far
I think T-Mo is where ATT was when they first got the iPhone. Utterly overwhelmed and able to deal with the technology at cost only to the customer.
Long story short, if you aren't in T-Mos 4G service area, WiFi Calling, once quite reliable, no longer is.
Disappointed.
I hate the thought of going back to the overpriced service of VzW, but at least I'd have service ......even at home, without WiFi.
I just started getting REG99: Unable to Connect errors after updating my G4 to version 10n... got a new SIM card, got an "update" sent to the SIM card twice (never got the "Welcome to T-Mobile" text so I have no idea if it even worked), factory-reset twice, and now T-Force told me to wait for Samsung to release an update at the end of the month. Yes, T-Force told me to wait for Samsung to update my LG phone. Sigh.
EDIT: NOT T-MOBILE'S FAULT! Installing Xposed broke WiFi Calling. Uninstalling it fixed WiFi Calling instantly.
disappointing it is. I had a dozen calls with tier 3 reps. Helpful, but exasperating.
I finally did a factory reset the other day. So far, all issues are fixed. Knock glass and plastic bits.
Your story sounds so much like mine that I had to comment. I purchased my LG G4 07/22/2015 from Swappa.Com and it was a brand new, LG G4 in a sealed box. I have spoken to at least 5 TMO service techs about the high battery usage, slow charging, phone heating up, calls ending abruptly, and garbled conversations after about 15 minutes of being on the phone. Their last suggestion was to send it in to LG. I have done that 3 times now! The first time LG said they replaced the camera! (Really?) for problems with the phone/modem? The second time LG couldn't find anything wrong, and "cleaned" it. But I agree with you 100% on how the asswipes at TMO all have different answers to the same questions/problems. Worse, LG has no answers and they are the manufacturer.
To make matters worse, TMO have adopted an attitude of "It's an LG Problem. Send it to them." Especially since I am Pre-paid month to month and purchased the phone outright from a 3rd party. They REALLY don't give a s**t!
1. Told I would need to have service for 40 days before they could unlock.
2. Told they could activate and unlock and that they would (but it didn't happen.)
3. Told by CSR that I had to have $100 either spent or in a TMO account before they
could unlock, and that this policy was in effect for 4 months.
4. Told my Tiffany Clover - Office of the President - that she would get my phone unlocked (never happened.)
factory reset
yea, the new un-carrier is becoming (surprise) another carrier.
try a factory reset from the settings menu.
I wiped everything, including the SD. Cleaned my mess up ....... so far.
Batt drains way slower, charges way faster, even from my Mac. And is in general pretty stable. Calls have been fine even in NYC where T-Mo def doesn't have enough bandwidth.
T-Mobile is a little bit wild west.
There is still some dumb stuff, but I think that may be LGs implementation of Lolli 5.1.
So far, I'm not using their Launcher (Apex) or lock screen (Next) and even that has caused no issues.
It's still a beast in my pocket. I really wanted to get the M9, but the deal was too good and HTC is having fiscal issues.
Where is the City of Beer? Milwaukee, Asheville, Boston, Paris?
I couldn't do a wipe because the system failed during a re-flash and left me with a 10n bootloader and a 10h system file. I had previously moved up to Micromod777's xtreme 2.0 which is h81110n. I had some problems with ads and extraneous apps on my phone. I did not think it through far enough when I reflashed with stock h81110h.
The phone was hard bricked and I had to send it back to LG. Here's hoping they just reflash it and send it on it's way back...
From my point of view: the City of Beer is Milwaukee, and it's not just because I live here.
A number of years ago, I went to Hooligan's and joined the "Around the World in 80 Beers" Club. There are a number of clubs like this in Milwaukee.
Finished drinking up the 80 beers in about a month. Got a t-shirt and my name on the wall. Plus, I actually learned about beers from other countries. For me, German Weiss Beer is the grand finale.
I'm a Belgian fan. Use to drink german in my ut. And many American crafts. Asheville has lots of craft brewing going on, if you ever get there.
Hope LG flash and return.

09/12/2015 : I had an email from LG that says my phone was fixed and is on it's way back to me.
Estimated Delivery via Fedex is Tuesday, 09/15/2015 and NO CHARGE!
I am about this.
However, there is a BIG DISCONNECT between what I know was done to the phone and what
the RA ticket shows: "Defect: Power-Completely off", <--- not what I said or what was wrong AND
"Repair Results: Power Management IC(PMIC)" <---this I believe, they probably shorted the proper leads
and that restored the IC(PMIC) and then reflashed the factory ROM. Fact is the unit was ON with no screen
functions available.
sounds good. Hope it's vastly better
I also had the REG99 error, so I called TMO and they re-submitted my issue to engineers twice. My phone stopped getting REG99 as much, but now I see an ER81 error. Granted, I got nothing but wifi calling errors when I was on the GoGo inflight text with Alaska Air just last week.

Just checking...xposed breaks wifi calling on 10n and we have posted the issue to rovo89 github in hopes he can fix it...good luck
Just so you guys know, it's not an LG issue. My Note 4 has similar issues. For me the REG99 error is only when I'm connected to unprotected WiFi networks that are slow. Also VoLTE is causing me major issues with Comcast Xfinity. Whenever it's on, I get super slow internet speeds for anything Google related. Once I turn VoLTE off, WiFi calling works, and no more slow Google related apps or web browsing.
To the OP what is your current internet provider?
