N7 at OfficeMax - Nexus 7 General

I got my Nexus 7 at OfficeMax a couple days ago, and after hearing all the screen issues (lifting up on the left side, yellowish tints, dead pixels) I added the 2 year protection they offer for 29.99. It covers everything from spills to drops to surges you name it. I was just wondering if anyone else got theirs from OfficeMax and added the protection as well? Or if anyone added any kind of extra protection for their device.

I did not, but when I bought mine at Wal-Mart last night they offered the exact same protection for the exact same price. I passed on it since the clerk told me I can re-add it if I come back in. I'm still on the fence about it...
I do have to ask, how exactly does this 2 year protection work? Is that to say you can return it right to the store within 2 years? Or you have a 2 year manufacturer's warranty where you have to mail it in, wait for them to fix it, then get it back?

The clerk at OfficeMax told me if anything happens to it within the 2 years to call the number on the protection booklet they give you. And they will either ship you another device or mail you a gift card for the exact amount of money you spent on the device including tax. Now that's just what I was told, I still need to look into it a little more.

I bought mine from sam's club in the 1st week of release. They didn't offer me a protection plan but I got one from squaretrade.com that cost me about the same because I had a coupon and protects from normal stuff and also the accident protection (drops, water damage)

I bought mine last week at office max with 2 year warranty for $39, not $29 but after reading the paperwork it says " glass" is not covered. Also that the warranty starts when original ends, which means there is no accident coverage for first year as the nexus comes with a year warranty?
Am I wrong?
My screen already appears a little yellow.

One drop was all the nook took

A few days ago, my NC took a short fall from hand to countertop -- a drop of less than a foot. Having dropped my iphone(s) multiple times from greater heights, onto hardwood and concrete, my first thought was I might have scuffed it but surely not broken it.
I was wrong. The LCD shattered inside, with cracks emanating from the lower-right bezel. I can see the backlight peeking from the edges of the bezel and cracks, but the display is gone.
I am lucky to have signed up for the $54 extended protection plan, which covers damage. I usually don't. I also discovered one can sign up for the plan within 30 days of purchase [14 in store].
BN said I'd have an RMA and replacement unit shipping information within a day, and it's been two. One of the features of the EPP they tout is "rapid replacement" -- I hope it turns out to be true.
I think the breakage is punishment for my smugness. I rooted my NC on 12/1 and ultimately had everything working (gapps, market, live wallpapers, multitouch) and never once had to reset or re-root. I was so careful up until the moment the unit spun out of my hands to its doom.
Anyone else break theirs yet? Have experience with the replacement service?

Yes, the magilla glass is intact. The impact point was actually the bezel, although it is unmarked.

Gorilla glass isn't indestructible, its not scratch proof either. I rarely drop my devices but I always run a case and protector anyways.
30s days? They say everywhere "at time of purchase", I might have to rethink that decision. 54 seemed high at the time.
I dropped mine yesterday. It fell about three feet onto my driveway. I've got two dings on two of the corners and had to reseat part of the case but everything still works.
I do have the extended warranty but I'm not going to exchange it for the dings since you only get one replacement for accidental damage.
I was just in a store the night before looking for a case but I didn't buy one because the one I wanted was out of stock.

I went in 2 days after I had bought mine and I was told you had 14 days, I'm guessing since that is their return policy too.

At the time of purchase, when the BN nook kiosk person offered the protection plan, I said half-jokingly "only if it covers accidents" and she laughed, so I assumed it didn't.
Then I saw the plan, covering impacts and spillage, for sale online but only paired with the NC unit -- i.e. you can't check out with only the plan. So I used the 'chat online' button above the footer on the bottom right of the NC support page -- I think it only appears during business hours -- and supplied my serial # and purchase date, and a few questions & a visa card # later, the transaction was done and the plan took effect that day.
I'm glad the plan was available after the fact. And I'll be gladder when a replacement unit arrives. Suddenly $54 doesn't seem too bad when confronted with $250+tax.
For another reference, this thread at bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com says
The protection plan can be orded at time of purchase or up to 30 days after we ship NOOKcolor or NOOK. This policy was changed recently. Customers can buy the extended warranty at the store within 14 days of purchase.

How do folks feel about the BN warranty vs. a square trade warranty. Square Trade is only $38 for 2 years (and you can almost always find 20-30% off codes). I know it lacks the in store support, but it would end up being about half the price of the BN warranty.

A-yup. Dunno why I didn't spot this thread earlier.
Not to put an incentive to break your shiny new toy, but some reimbursement could be worked out if you have a busted Nook Color to sacrifice at the alter.
I would support that, not that anyone wants to part with their toys when they can be replaced by B&N.

FWIW, the thread I referenced earlier (http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOKcolor-Technical-Support/NC-Purchasing-extended-support-thoughts/m-p/750690) has some discussion of square trade.
You mean I could have swapped it at the store and avoided these nasty NC withdrawal symptoms? excuse me while I go kick myself.
Update: On day 3 I received the RMA and UPS label. Still no notification of shipping the replacement unit.

They want the broken one back, those scamps.
To clarify, you can purchase the protection plan in store within 14 days OR by calling 1-800-THE-BOOK within 30 days.
Edit: Yes, if you have the PP you can just exchange in store. They don't want you to, but they'll do it if you calmly & politely insist.
I purchase SquareTrade warranties. A 3 yr warranty with Accidental Handling coverage (i.e. you drop and break it) costs around $50. Mine was only $25 because I had a SquareTrade coupon from a previous purchase. You have longer than 14 days to purchase, although i think that if you purchase the warranty after the date of NC purchase you have to wait 30 days for the accidental coverage handling to work. SquareTrade warranties are fully transferrable if you ever sell your NC.

Wow, good thing you had the ADP plan, OP. Bummer you only ever get one replacement (albeit understandably so). I tried returning mine to the store due to five dead pixels and a cracked bezel (no drops, been in a cover since the day I bought it), and was refused an in-store replacement or manufacturer coverage--they insisted I use my ADP coverage.
All is well and good (got my replacement with a big green dead pixel even worse than the other five) and after reading the posts here and the fine print I'm really annoyed that I wasted my one replacement on something the manufacturer warranty should have covered (dead pixels are manufacturer defects, although the crack is not--I have no explanation for it). >.<
Ah, well … live and learn.

Best Buy ADH
with the Best Buy purchased ones you have 30 days to buy the ADH policy for $30 per yr, which covers pretty much anything, including in my case dropping onto a sewer grate face first. bought the plan online after purchase even in a different state and was able to walk in and walk out with a brand new NC. The plan is 'consumed' by the replacement, but $30 was way less than a new screen and the headache of shoving it in there (if even possible).

So I requested an exchange from the PS...

Anyone else in the same boat? Have you gotten the email from the escalation team yet? If so, how long did it take for them to contact you?
I am still waiting for the email the rep on the phone told me about last night. I explained that my speaker is too low compared to my GFs N7 and he mentioned a lot of people were complaining about this with the 16GB versions (go figure). He said that they'll ship me a new one and will send packaging labels to return this one. He said I should expect an email from Google some time this week and after that they'll send me the replacement with 1-day shipping. Is this accurate?
At least I can play around with the N7 for the time being. However, it's quite annoying knowing ill have to redo all my setup again. Só many apps, layout changes, settings changes, etc.
Oh well...
PS - Today at work I compared the screens between my 16GB and my coworkers 8GB and his was noticeably brighter when maxed out. Weird and sad that there is another thing I need to worry about now. I guess I expected these QC issues from Asus as an original Transformer owner.

Nice! Wish they would fulfill my order before sending you a second one though... no offense.
I don't really mind the wait for my replacement. I just want some confirmation that they'll indeed be doing it. Don't want to run out of my grace period without getting to test out the second unit.
I'm sure you'll be getting yours soon.
6pm tonight will be 48 hrs since I contacted them, I don't have high hopes of getting a proper 2nd email.
I called them on Tues about the lifted screen and I got an email from them earlier today about getting a replacement. It seems that I will have to order a new unit (my card will be AUTH but not charged) and then the replacement in. They need to get the device within 21 days so that my card doesn't get charged. I've already placed the order through a special URL and now just waiting to see when they will ship.

I contacted them on Tuesday sadly only a few hours after getting my N7. My speaker is defective as well, and like you said when I brought it up they mentioned its been coming up lately. Same deal, told me they would ship out a new one for me within 24hrs however they didn't mention anything about 1 day shipping. That would be great.
Just under 24hrs later last night I received two emails back including the return shipping label info and another with a link to a custom play store checkout with my 16gb replacement. I put in my order via the link they gave me but I was greeted with an error on the next page, however I promptly received an email confirming my order so I guess it went through anyways.
All that's left now is waiting to see when it ships..
I hope it's soon.

I just received the email from google. They sent me a RMA and a prepaid shipping label. There's also a link to have them send me a replacement unit.
The link takes me to my google wallet account, with a new 16 GB in the cart. They don't charge shipping or tax, but put a hold for $249 on your credit card. I have 21 days to return the defective Nexus 7.
I'm a little worried that I am basically buying a new Nexus 7, and not getting priority over someone who ordered today. If I have to wait 3-4 weeks, I will feel like google mislead me about this Nexus 7 replacement process.

Same thing through office Depot. They do next day shipping though but they do that ludicrous credit card hold. Probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard of and makes me not want to order online anymore. Walking into a store you don't pay shipping nor get a hold on your card. Very very inconvenient.

My issue is that there are many other online vendors that handle things fine... mainly Amazon.com. How google is handling this issue is terrible. "oh man, phones are getting flooded, TAKE DOWN THE SUPPORT NUMBER FROM OUR WEBSITE"
I have said this in other threads.... This is the last time I ever buy a device straight from google. Hardware issues can't be their fault 100%, stuff happens... It's how they are handling the problems that is frustrating.

This is what they told me that would happen. I'm still waiting for the RMA email but at least they are sending them out.
Bad news if you're technically buying a new one at zero price. Here in the UK, they've said that pre orders from June 30th are shipping next week, so I'm looking at a week Monday shipment at the earliest. Over a month since the initial order!
On a related note, just how low is this "low speaker volume" problem? I'd say mine isn't the loudest tablet ever, and now I'm wondering if it's possible to get one with louder volume. I have a tiny bit of screen separation and was going to keep mine (everything else is fine, and my screen's just the tiniest bit higher on the left than the right). However, if the volume is lower than it should be...
Also, anybody notice headphone volume also isn't very loud? Just loud enough to be acceptable, but not loud enough to be too loud. I'm used to devices starting to get too loud at about 75%.

I got the squaretrade warranty when it was discounted to $39. While I don't work for McDonald's (actually I did when I was a kid at $1.90hr way back when), it is still $250 and paying $39 to replace it regardless of what the reason is, it worth it to me.
Note that it is also transferable...if I see the device in a year to move up to something new, I can pass the warranty on to the new owner... adds value to the device for the new owner to ensure that if it craps out, they aren't out their money for a used device.
Personally, I think those warranties are not worth it. Then again, I've never dropped a tablet, laptop or even a phone before. (Knock on wood..err...Asus plastic)
Perhaps I'll change my mind now that I have a toddler running around, but 16-25% of the cost of the product isn't worth it to me, especially when all but accidental should be covered under manufacturer warranty anyway... and I get coverage through my credit card that doubles the manufacturer warranty.

Under absolutely no circumstances does a low budget tablet justify a significant drop in quality control. Period. Done. Over. Fact.
To all Nexus 7 owners: I love my Nexus 7 like you cannot imagine. I would still recommend it to users. But I would absolutely have insurance on it. In fact I'm not sure I could recommend it without immediately recommending insurance for it in the same sentence... which really doesn't give credibility to how I feel about its build quality, but it is what it is. I was offered insurance and denied it. Two weeks later the screen cracked at some point when I was walking to my car, yet I never dropped it.

Looks like I'm getting the coverage for $60.
I'm curious if you guys can clue me in on a little something about SquareTrade. I thought I read SOMEWHERE on the SquareTrade web site that this is only good for devices you've purchased within the last 30 days. Luckily I'm on day 28 (imagine that?) but I'm grabbing one right now. I do have to +1 ASUS, they claimed to have repaired my cracked screen and it's on a Fedex truck coming back to me now, but even still I want to grab a warranty to have handy in the event something does happen down the line.
That being said, I cannot find the 30 day thing any longer on the SquareTrade web site, but I did see a screenshot of a July deal where the warranties were on sale for like 15 bucks off the regular price, and right below I saw "only applicable to items bought in the last 30 days." Is the 30 day thing just applicable when you're buying an on-sale warranty?
Also, I put in 249 for the warranty and it came out to 50 bucks. But then I got to thinking, should I be rounding up? I re-did the quote for 250 and it jacked the price up 10 bucks. Does it matter? Should I be using 249 since that's the appropriate shelf price of the N7?
i bought mine with amex platinum and i think they double the warranty and offer replacenent, not sure how it works
i got reimbursed for dropping my macbook pro in the hot tub last time so i know they dont mess around

I just called SquareTrade. Their system works like this. With ebay purchased items, you have 30 days to get a warranty through SquareTrade. With retail purchased items (Best Buy, WalMart, Costco, any cellular store like Sprint, etc) you have 90 days.
So with me on day 28 having bought it at WalMart, I'm clear within the 90 day window to purchase the warranty. The only problem is with retail warranties I need to provide the receipt. I KNEW I had the receipt in the box, but the problem is I sent my N7 to ASUS for RMA. Even though it's getting fixed, I'd much rather not go through this fiasco again in the event it happens again, hence my interest in SquareTrade. I know I have the receipt somewhere, but I'm not sure where...
I wonder if WalMart will reprint me a receipt based on previous records??
Did anyone buy the Staples insurance?

$50 insurance for a $200 or even $250 tablet seems a bit excessive to me. Plus, there's a chance that, by the time it does break, the price would have been discounted or there'd be a newer tablet out anyway.
Everyone is different. For most people the warranty is excessive. I got it anyway. Fact is I can afford to buy a 40 warranty, but I can't afford another 250 bucks. If you can afford another 250 bucks, and your usually good with your electronics and don't have them around small children, it probably isn't worth it. But for me, the peace of mind is worth it.
Another big reason for buying it was the problems with the Nexus. I exchanged mine 3 times. The one I have now is good, but it's nice to know if something goes wrong I don't have to necessarily deal with Asus if I don't have to.
By the way, is it true that if you bought through the google store you can replace it through them for a year for warranty exchange, instead of Asus? Or was that just a rumor?

By the way, those of you who do plan on getting square trade, if you have 90 days take your time and try to find a coupon code or sale. I mistakenly thought it was only 30 days and rushed and bought mine with only 5 dollars off, whereas if I had waited a week they started that sale again for 10 dollars off the Nexus warranty. Which I was told I missed out on. Pisses me off, I should have called them and demanded the adjusted price....

Personally I think the warranty is worth it. It'd be one thing if the warranty was 50% of the cost of the tablet, but no matter how you slice it, 50 bucks is significantly easier to eat than 250. Period. If I had gobs of money sitting around where I know I'll always be in a situation where I can drop 250 on a new tablet without flinching, yeah I'd pass on it. But I'm not in that scenario, so 50 bucks to help future proof myself for another 2 years is a huge :good: to me personally.
A tablet is a device that you'll likely be carrying a lot. It's a mobile device. It's not something that will frequently be in a backpack like my laptop, or in my pocket like a cell phone. To be quite honest, I think warranties on a tablet make more sense than anything else... with cell phones close behind, of course. Just my 2 cents though. I didn't purchase a SquareTrade warranty yet as I don't have my receipt since I bought other things that day at Wal-Mart and had to send in the receipt for a rebate on another item. Wal-Mart informed me they looked in their records and can pull up my old receipt for a re-print so I should be okay.
I don't really think the build quality of the Nexus 7 is something that scares me to the point of needing the warranty. If you Google search for iPad screen cracks and sift through the users who say they did nothing to cause the crack, you'll see just as many complaints with similar scenarios. I think it's important to acknowledge that tablets as a whole just might be more suseptible to accidental drops and whatnot. Based on that premise alone is why I'm getting the warranty.

Seriously, that's an insane amount. My homeowners insurance is only $600 for the year, and that covers a $250K home. What a racket. Spend money on a one year insurance policy, for an item that already has a one year manufacture warranty is just insane.

Nexus 7 (Asus fail RMA)

Finally i got my Nexus 7 back after 3 weeks. You don't even know how happy i was to get it back. That is until i found it that they didn't repaired it. Well they did repaired my nexus 7 dc jack but they didn't repaired my screen. I was having major screen bleeding and i specifically told them to fix my screen and dc jack. They only fixed dc jacked but I just got off the phone with Asus and now i got to RMA it again... This is very very annoying but i hope that they actually fix it this time. There go 3 more weeks. I really love this tablet but it sucks that i can't use it for a total of 6 weeks since Asus fail on their repair.

If I were you, I'd just sell it and buy a new one. It's so much easier than dealing with the turn over time and customer service.

I think they can not fix the screen, if not send you a new one and they don't want that.
Will see with mine. I have yellow spots and kaput speaker.
Will send it back next week.
I can't believe a big tech company like Asus doesn't have an advance shipping option!

Im surprised too but their quality control on devices sucks.
Well to be fair, it sucks, but about all mobile device manufacturers have crappy warranty service. Google does advance shipping on nexus devices that's why I bought my tablet straight from them. Wasn't crazy about the extra $14 to ship it but figured if I ever had a problem it would be less hassle then dealing with Asus.

Yea Google needs to setup some kind of advanced replacement for this stuff. Never have I ever had to send a device out for repair. Just send me a refurb, I'll send you mine, fix mine, and return it to someone else. Seems it would be better that way. Customers shouldn't be bothered with whatever happens behind the curtains...
I can understand laptop and PCs as those are a little more personal because of data and parts.

This is one of the things people forget about when they say Apple charges too much money. When you have a problem, you goto the Apple store, they'll hand you a 'new' device on the spot. Its usually a refurb, but if they don't have any refurbs, you get a new one. And if they don't have any new ones, you get an upgrade. My wife's iPhone 4 had an issue with the charging port. They had zero iPhone 4's in stock at the Apple store so they gave her a brand new 4S. Not a refurb, they opened a brand new box and handed it to her.
I'm surprised Samsung hasn't started doing this even if its a 'mini store' inside of places like Best Buy or the like.

That's why I got mine from Google too. I've gotten two replacements. Hardly any wait. They but a hold on my card, but I can understand why.

Yeah that's typically how advance shipping works. You typically require a credit card to use it, exception being a carriers warrant service, which is because they can just bill your account if they find the warranty to be void

mine was fixed by Asus at no cost...
really happy. will buy nexus again if they take care of me like they did...
they changed screen and speakers. that was in Switzerland...

Wow! Good to see people's nexus 7's get repaired. I sent mine back a few months ago. *I had screen lift* . They returned me a new nexus 7 as they said, and when i opened the box there was a nexus 7 with screen lift , and scratched screen + someone tried to open it so i have real bad scratches from the sides all sides. How nice. Paid 260 euros for a nexus 7 16 gb. For that money i could've had a 32GB 3G Nexus 7 . Well that is how my luck is .

Call and complain. The N7 also doesn't have any type of serial numbers hard coded on the back once the removable sticker is gone.
I'm not trying to be a **** but I would just buy a new one and make a switch/return as damaged.

A few weeks ago after light use, and most of that reading, I noticed an entire band of pixels lighter than the rest of the screen. Mind you, my Nexus was 3 weeks old and that was 3 weeks ago. Notified ASUS and quickly got an RMA. Sent it in, got it back, read the repair note *BATTERY BAD, REPLACED BATTERY*. Nope didn't even fix the screen, let alone touch it. It still has the same band of light pixels. I promptly emailed them back and am still waiting for a reply. I read so many mixed reviews about ASUS customer support that I dreaded sending it in. After my incident I understand why.
just received my nexus 7 after three weeks
let me tell you how happy I am to have it back, though they didn't fix one thing on my c9o. not the screen flicker nor the charging issues..nothing.
on the paper had said found nothing wrong. also they stole my charger...it was written in the report that I was going to send that in as well and wrote on the paper inside the box.
this was Texas facility
I called then where's my charger..they opened a case for me, said were going to put me on hold to speak to manager, stayed on for 15mins then they hung up on me.
yo. **** you Asus I swear

Helps to be near an Apple store for that. I had the awful luck to be at school (with no means to the nearest Apple store before my warranty ran out) when my trackpad went nuts two days before warranty's end. Now I live next to one but I'm past warranty. And as the student manager for our college helpdesk, Apple makes mail-ins absolutely awful unless you're willing to argue.
That said, done and done on their in-store support. But Apple's got the on-the-ground presence to do that sort of thing. If Google made their own retail shops, I would be a happy person indeed.
...but what would you call them? I think it's Microsoft's Experts, Apple's Geniouses, and Google's...I dunno, kNow-ers?

[Q] cracked screen

So yeah... Im pretty pissed but ive cracked the glass. 2 obvious questions. Where can i get a replacement and are there instructions anywhere. Web searches didnt yield much.
Where did you get it? Maybe Google will replace the phone if you got it from them.
ATT unfortunately....
ifixit's teardown shows how to take the phone apart. It does note "Even though it was easy to get here, the display is still fused to the digitizer glass—it won't be a cheap replacement part if you crack your screen."
I haven't seen much as far as replacement parts for this device just yet. I have seen replacement backs, but not a whole lot else just yet.
Ok thanks guys. Ill just live with it until i can get my hands on a screen\digitizer combo.

You could calling Motorola and see what they will charge to fix it. I don't think that it will cost more than $200, but I could be wrong. It never hurts to ask and see what they say. I'm glad that I bought Moto care for my phone because I'm clumsy.
cracked screen
so i broke my screen after 2 days it was in my front pocket. NEVER DROPPED IT. pulled it out to use it and the screen was cracked a crossed the screen. I have owned over 50 phone and I think this is the cheapest phone I have ever used. So motorola will fix it for $175 installed but I used my insurance from ATT and paid $200 and they overnighted me a phone.
I had to pay Tmobile 175, they overnighted me a brand new one, still sealed in the nexus box

I bought mine directly from Motorola. Cracked on day 3 (a hard drop onto cement after a long night of drinking). Motorola also charges $175 for the repair and they place a $500 hold on your credit card (if you want to get the new phone before you send the old one back. They were supposed to overnight a brand new one on Monday. Here it is Thursday. I finally called after receiving no updates and they have no phones to ship me.
SOL cutting my fingers until production kicks up I guess! Teaches me for being an early adopter...
