Using a Captivate as a pre paid phone - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to set up a phone for a foreign exchange student. I just purchased the S3 for myself. I have an ATT captivate, rooted, not sure what ROM is on it now. I just ordered a T-Mobile sim card ($1.05). Can I put this sim into my captivate and buy the $30 pay as you go plan from T-Mobile (100min, unlimited text, unlimited data). Is there anything in particular I may have to change?
Thanks,
Mike

I don't see why it wouldn't work.
But I believe u will need to unlock the phone first. Use this Galaxy_S Unlock by Helroz.
And secondly, the Captivate on T-mobile frequencies will only be able to get the Edge network.

Yuck lol edge network drives me nuts.
You could go with Straight Talk if they have good service on your area (they would off the att network). The sim is 14.99 and the plan is 50/month "unlimited" everything.

H20 is based off of at&t its 40

Straighttalk better deal. But you have to order some card online. H20 sins sold for 10$ at retailors and for 2 gb data 60$ not 40$,

[Q]How to get a T-Mobile Pre-paid SIM Card?

I recently bought a Dell Streak 7 4G T-mobile on eBay, how do I get a SIM card for it? I have never used a SIM-based telephony service and have no idea how they work. (I have always been a Sprint customer).
Any help will be appreciated. Basically, I would like an affordable pay as you go service. No contract.
I'm not 100% but prepaid might not work for mobile broadband

Buy a prepaid tmo phone and take the card out of it, weither or not it will allow data is an entirely seperate thing.
You CANT make normal cell type calls with the s7, it doesnt have the hardware for it. You CAN use voip calls fine though

They offer the same prices without contract, just go to store or call them. I'm on the $29/ month with no contract. This is for data only.
EDIT: The 4G model should have come with a SIM card. Did you check the slot?

Thanks. I bought the tablet on eBay. The seller didn't leave the SIM Card with it. I have checked the slot. Your plan will not work for me. Although it is not on contract, I doubt if my monthly usage will justify paying $29. I would rather pay for just what I use and load up as I go.

I have a rooted HTC EVO 4G and I use it as a Wifi hotspot on rare occasions. I have already done that with this tablet and it works like a charm. Considering EVO's poor battery life when used as a Wifi hotspot, I would rather want an affordable SIM solution.

So far as know T-Mobile does not offer prepaid plans by the minute; only by the data usage per month. Those pre paid cards are for voice phones.
EDIT: I mean they don't offer those by the minute plans for the S7.

I recently went on vacation and used my S7 on the freeway to look up stuff while driving. That is not possible with WiFi, and it is this convenience that really makes it useful. I use it with WiFi at home. The T-Mobile plan come with unlimited hotspot connections, although I have not used that yet. My plan is limited in MB, so I don't use it as a hotspot.

[Q] Unlocking xt860 for USA

So i'm travelling to the states for 5 days and someone suggested to me instead of paying for a bunch of roaming add-ons from Bell, i may be better off to unlock my phone and get a sim card on a pay as you go plan. Is this possible and more importantly is it worth it?
Any advice is appreciated
I would personally bite the bullet. It'll probably cost you about $20 to unlock the phone and then you will have to get an AT&T SIM card or pay as you go, probably won't have data on it, etc etc... Last time I went down to the US I spent about $50 on roaming. You're only down there for 5 days, how much time do u want to spend screwing with your phone?
Another thing you could do is turn on airplane mode but keep the wifi turn on, and get a google voice number. Pair that with GrooVe IP, and you have a $5 wi-fi only solution.
The data is what I'm more interested in. My phone will double as my GPS unit, and Google search to find stuff to do. Bell charges 30 bucks for 10 MB.
I'm probably gonna e doing 4-5 trips a year to the states, on a pay as you go I could probably just reload everytime I go down, once I have the sim
Sent from my rooted xt860
Just go to Crackberry, go to the SIM unlocking section, find a site that allows you to unlock for free, then yeah T-Mobile has prepaid service, or maybe AT&T I don't know. Anyway, you get the idea.

would this work with tmobile's 4g/3g network?
Stanley,
AFIAK the 3G frequencies used by T-Mobile is AWS, which the XT860 is not compatible with.
Hey guys sorry just a quick question...
Would the Bell XT860 work on Rogers/Fido once it was unlocked? Has anyone actually tried it?
The reason I ask is because I've read that apparently the Verizon Droid 3 was not compatible with Fido/Rogers even after being unlocked.
Thanks
Bell XT860 definitely works on Rogers when unlocked. I'm using one right now on Rogers. (Just running the Chinese ME863 ROM on it right now). When i was on the stock Bell ROM it also worked fine.

I know nothing about this stuff, but google search tells me that t-mobile uses 1900 MHz GSM and 2100MHz UMTS which are both supported by the xt860. They also support HSPA+
does this not mean the xt860 should work on t-mobile?
The phone would need the phone to support the 1700mhz band as well.

Any success with unlocked XT860 working in the USA and getting 3G?
I read elsewhere, it will work on AT&T 3G?
Anyone, please?
All you should have to do is unlock the SIM slot.

Hey fireeater,
I just ordered an XT883 that will be unlocked and will be used with my T-mobile sim. T-Mobile uses 1700 & 2100 for their 3g while AT&T uses 850/1900. Do you know if the agreement between AT&T and T-mobile will allow the XT883 to get 3g with t-mobile?
Tmobile is refarming their 3g. So you will get 3g by the end of the year.

Prepaid SIM for TMobile Tab?

I cancelled my contract with TMobile for my Tab. I'm currently running Alroger's CM10.1. I mainly use wifi, but was wondering if there are any prepaid or pay-as-you-go options for data I might consider for those rare occasions I might need mobile data?

What carrier are you using your N5 with? -Discussion-

Lots of threads about shipping among other things. But what carrier are you using your PHONE on? I am personally using T-Mobile with Unlimited everything on a family plan.
Since this device is being sold around the world, i think an actual poll would be too lengthy and have too many options. So please just post as a comment!

Depending on your current bill, could potentially be worth it to cancel early. I have a friend that is going to cancel their verizon, because they will save more money than the cancellation fee.
As for me, T-mobile, been with them since 2001. (GO VOICESTREAM)
Um, you forgot to add the poll to your poll thread.
I will be using AIO pro plan.
Sprint is my carrier.
Will be Three UK. 2000 minutes, 5000 texts, 5000 three to three minutes, unlimited data with free upgrade to 4G in December including unlimited tethering all for £15 a month on a 12 month sim only contract.

Same Situation, however I am in the midst of fighting with them over this nonsensical 61 Cent "Administrative Fee" they added per line to my Family Plan. They never notified anyone and in breach of contract. I am going to try to be released for their breach of contract.
T-Mobile!
I ordered the free micro sim kit from T-Mobile today. Plan on buying their 1000 minute $100/yr prepaid plan. Wifi for 90% of it's use. Sad to hear about Google stopping 3rd party VOIP apps next year, no more GrooveIP, Talkatone and others... still not sure if I'd use 1000 minutes per year.

Straight talk At&t. I really wish Tmo would get the LTE in my area already because that seems to be the best choice. Just can't deal with edge/2g speeds and att has great LTE coverage for me. Even better than vzw in a lot of places.

Only bad thing with Cricket is that the data speeds are throttled.
If you can live with slower data, it's great.

I have four lines on my account with ATT we get 15gb per month with rollover for any unused data - and it runs roughly 55 per phone per month
works for us pretty well...

Yes, price wise. The max speeds you can get on Cricket is 8mbs down. They had a promo a few months back, their best plan which comes with 10gb of data for $60, they doubled it to 20gb data for the same price, with auto pay on you could get 20gb of LTE data for $55 a month, then throttled to 2g for remainder of the month. Hell, even I was tempted to jump on that offer.

No you need a Cricket Wireless sim, you can order one from their website or get them at most any Wal-Mart's.
They were bought out by ATT and operate on ATT towers, so same coverage as ATT.

I-Wireless runs on the Sprint network, not sure why you would want to goto Sprint, instead of ATT, but those price suck compared what you can get directly through Sprint.
For $60, you can get unlimited everything, including unlimited LTE Data.
