I bought an LG9400 from Craigslist and it was simple. I made sure to meet the guy at the Verizon store and I didnt pay him till the phone was activated on my line. It was simple and he understood. If the buyer has an issue with that then its probably stolen.
Ive also sold a few things on there and bought two cars from there, and found my sister one as well.

The Photon was a tough phone for sure. I beat the crap out of it, then passed it on to my son who did the same...... Its still alive today, just not activated. Poor photon never got much buzz but was a great device.

Cause we traded iPhone 5 in cause they are horrible on black Friday gave us a lg g2 through the mail let us keep number and even upgrade date they sent a 32 gig instead of 16 whoops on them then 2 weeks later sent us another in the mail. Anyone returning an extra phone from vzw is a damn fool. Any multi-billion dollar company that mistakenly send a product to my house I'll gladly accept it as a gift. And the FTC will gladly back me up on that action http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0181-unordered-merchandise.
So all these white knight good citizen advising you to return the phone are buffoons. No one is losing their job from these common errors. We're not talking about a poor old lady losing a bag of money on her way home and not returning it back to her. LOL, we're talking about Verizon! The biggest wireless rapist corporation on earth! That's like returning chump change to uncle Scrooge.
